The Colombian free-trade revelation

posted at 1:43 pm on October 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal took exception to Barack Obama’s answer in the last debate on the Colombian free-trade agreement. In its editorial, they pointed out that the accusations made against Alvaro Uribe’s government are mostly distortions made by protectionist unions who oppose any kind of free trade at all. Unsurprisingly, few in the Tanning Bed Media bothered to point this out, but McCain’s attack on Obama’s position points out the fundamental weakness of Obama on foreign policy:

In Wednesday night’s debate with John McCain, Barack Obama defended his opposition to the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement this way: “The history in Colombia right now is that labor leaders have been targeted for assassination, on a fairly consistent basis, and there have not been any prosecutions.” Among the many falsehoods in this Presidential campaign, this is one of the worst.

It is true that Colombia has a history of violence. But since President Álvaro Uribe took office in 2002, that violence has been substantially reduced. The homicide rate through the end of 2007 was down by 40.4% and the rate among union members was down almost 87%. There is nothing “consistent” about a drop to 26 union member murders in 2007 from 155 in 2000.

As for prosecutions: In union-member killings, there were zero convictions from 1991-2000 and one in 2001. But from 2002-2007, there were 80. According to the Colombian attorney general’s office, 29% of those murders were “found to have been results of theft, petty crime and random violence unrelated to union activity.” Mr. Uribe has nonetheless created a special investigative unit for crimes against union members, and he expanded a special government protection program for unions.

In other words, Obama is operating under old information — almost a decade old. Despite Colombia and Uribe being under attack from the Marxist terrorist group FARC (and its Venezuelan ally, Hugo Chavez), Uribe has greatly improved the country’s record in fighting violence against union leaders. While doing so, Colombia has provided us with an invaluable alliance against drug cartels as well as a counterweight to Chavez’ ambitions in the region.

But more importantly, Obama apparently hasn’t learned anything about trade with Colombia. The pact would lift tariffs on American goods entering the Colombian market, not the other way around. Why? The US doesn’t impose tariffs on Colombian goods, and hasn’t for years, thanks to agreements that date back to the Clinton administration for Colombian efforts to fight drug trafficking. The pact would create jobs in America by opening the Colombian market to make trade more fair than it currently is.

That’s why John McCain calls this a “no brainer” in his response. The Colombians already have an open market in the US, and the agreement would balance it for American companies looking to enter the Colombian market. It would also strengthen our alliance with the Uribe government, a much-needed boost for an ally with two enemies on its borders. It costs us nothing and expands our ability to export. And note that Obama never explains how denying this pact will do anything to improve the position of labor unions in terms of justice in Colombia.

Obama does nothing but regurgitate the tired, old protectionist rhetoric and excuses from organized labor. It gives a different meaning to the term “no brainer”.

I noticed this during the debate but it got lost amongst all the other noise. Obama basically parroted the disinformation spread by various campus radical orgs who oppose free trade, or even just trade, with anyone. Google “Killer Coke” campaigns to see the heart of it.

Hugo Chavez was interviewed on tv yesterday playing nice-nice with the the US. He said what a great country we are.

Chavez is, of course, a mortal enemy of Columbia, and of ours. Chavez is banking on an Obama victory, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him welcomed in an Obama WH.

Columbia is one of the very best allies we have in Latin America. It is an absolute no-brainer that our Socialist candidate Obama would be against anything that benefits Columbia. Without US backing and assistance of many kinds, Columbia will succumb to the forces of evil in S. America.

I only pray that he will be returning to finish his one and only term in the Senate and not be heading to the Oval Office to inflict pain on this country for the next four years.

In other words, Obama is operating under old information — almost a decade old.

D’OH … which I write sharing in that anger and disgust described by “winemkr”.

The isssue of Columbia may SEEM like slow-news-fare, but it’s an extremely important one and should give EVERY responsible American pause as to why Obama is quite so resolute in remaining misleading, whether it be by intentional uninformation or by misleadment, Obama’s avoidance and obfuscations in this specific issue are extremely troubling.

BECAUSE Columbia is our “gateway” nation in South America, one in which Capitalism has actually progressed well in the face of extreme Communist obstacles.

Obama’s entire ideology is aligned with the Communist obstacles that have made progress in Columbia such a hard-won, hard-accomplished thing, as Obama’s ideology is also similarly blended with that of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro (and with Gadhalfi, from what I just read, and Farakhan, and…).

And Obama has been extremely slick in remaining distant from discussing South America (overall) and trade agreements in any specificity. I doubt this is by accident — he’s left these significant issues in “aloof land” I’d venture to guess, intentionally, while trying to coast on entertainment fodder to hysterical audiences like talking about “pie” and repeating “blowing” something like seven times today in a speech (guess what THAT was in reference to…”blowing” Obama crowed, “blowing…blowing…blowing…” and the crowd screamed and Obama was smilin’).

ANOTHER THING that Obama has said in the first two Debates — sortof “glancing” statements he’s made peculiarly without reference to any specific question but which he’s repeated in the context of other issues (thus, they’re odd and oddly inserted, indicating something larger that Obama’s not coming forward about while campaigning but which reveal intents for afterward):

he’s said, “we have to send more money to other nations…” then he’ll go on about the issue he’s been asked to comment on, yet he’s inserted that very peculiar phrase in his debate remarks, like it’s a debt-payment or private language to those he understands will understand, while assuming most of the public will ignore or not notice.

He doesn’t specify WHICH “nations” or WHAT “money” he’s referring to or has in mind.

So, like his vagueries about Columbia, I doubt these remarks are intentionally “uninformed” but are indications of plans that — if he were to be specific now would ensure he’d be anathema to many U.S. voters — are anathema to many U.S. voters.

Obama doesn’t want Americans to do the jobs that Columbians refuse to do. Or maybe NancyPeelousyHarryReidBarackObama here the word Colombia, then visualize Christopher Columbus, the genocidal maniac who brought into existence the possibility of the United States of America. Then after a bout of wretching and dry heaves, they come to their senses and oppose anything that could benefit a country with that same name. Then in order to add insult to injury, the Speaker utilizes a FARC supported South American Senator to try to undermine Columbia and to reinforce Chavez and other commies in the region. To think that Nancy would be given a free hand by Obama is one more reason to vote against the Obamanation.

To me the most important issue in this election is character. I chose John McCain because of what he has sacrificed for our country and his brothers in arms in the Hanoi Hilton. Any man that can endure that kind of torture and come out with noting but love for his country and his brothers in arms is a REAL MAN. A man who refused special treatment to go home early because others had been there longer and it is not protocol. A man who had his arms purposefully broken so he could not be a pilot again as punishment. That man knows what it truly means to be in service to his fellow man. I will follow him anywhere because he has lived all his life the ideals that Senator Obama only can speak of. John McCain is the true measure of what it means to be a Patriot, to be an American, to be just a man. A humble servant of his fellow man. The Viet Cong broke him in prison, but they never broke his spirit. I trust John McCain. Anyone who has ever served or known someone who has served knows what I am talking about. My father served in the Army in Vietnam; his brother and my uncle was a Marine in Vietnam and also a tunnel rat; two of my friends from high school were Navy Seals, One died in a training accident, and the other lead his SEAL Team; one of my best friends served two tours in Iraq and his brother briefs the Generals that brief the President; three of my high school friends were Marines who served in the 2nd Marine Division during the first gulf war. My Dad’s father and my grandfather was in the Navy during WWII fighting the Japanese. My other Grandfather, my Mom’s father fought the Nazi’s in WWII and saw what the Nazi’s did to the Jews. Never Again, fascism! One of my other best friends was a Green Beret with other Green Beret’s that fought in Vietnam.

America keeps its word. We are an honorable country. We promised the Iraqi’s we would leave their country better than we found it. Our troopers confirmed this to them personally, we must honor our word. We will leave in honor and victory. We promised the Afghan people the same.

No smug, Ivy League educated, elitist liberal is going to BS me into believing he is the embodiment of all that is good, just, honorable, righteous, and correct in this world. Only a man that has walked the talk and lived those ideals is worthy. We see thru the morally bankrupt and corrupt media and politicians. This is the greatest country in the world, and I am not ashamed, I do not feel guilty, and I am not embarrassed to be an American! I would follow John McCain to the gates of hell and back. He is the only one in this election who has been there and returned. We need a leader in this election and not a poser. We need a real masculine man; a real alpha male. The only one is John McCain.

I have had the Honor to be surrounded by the true Patriots who built and continue to uphold the ideals we all hold so dear as Americans; the ideals that make America the last greatest hope of all that is good in this world.

MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John McCain for President!

Thanks for bringing this up, Ed.

The bottom line is that if Columbia’s president was a Marxist, the Dems would be supporting him 100%.

And it’s just too darn bad that Columbia isn’t more like the Democratic Marxist paradise of Chicago.

Buy Danish on October 18, 2008 at 3:10 PM

The Colombian unions have long been infiltrated by FARC operatives and have undermined the political process in Columbia. The Democrats point out the labor unions because they sound like a nice populist talking point, but in truth they often act more like subversive groups than labor unions.

IN fact FARC is deeply involved in the drug trade because that is how they get the cash for operations, similar to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Now FARC has a political alliance with the Patriotic Union party in Columbia in order to press their agenda through the leftist political party. While this is an attempt by FARC to use become more acceptable in the political process, it does not change their hardline socialist agenda.

I wonder of Obama knows he is supporting socialists when he supports the Colombian labor unions. I suspect he does, but he can get away with it because Americans will envision them like the unions here rather than the much more violent and socialist entities that they are in Colombia.

Obama did NOT vote on the Peru NAFTA Expansion as he said he did in debate. According to this record, Obama did not vote. That means, he didn’t even vote “Present” on something he supported in Latin America.

The breakdown of this vote vividly demonstrates two phenomena: the distance between most senators and the American public on trade issues, and the depth of the American public’s negative opinion about NAFTA-style trade deals. All but two of nine Democratic freshmen senators who recently campaigned extensively in their states opposed the Peru NAFTA expansion today. Most of the Democratic presidential candidates oppose it, including Sens. Joseph Biden of Delaware and Chris Dodd of Connecticut.

In contrast to most of the Democratic presidential candidates who oppose the Peru NAFTA expansion, Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois support it. Clinton and Obama’s support for the Peru FTA – after both opposed the 2005 Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which contained identical provisions and now campaign against NAFTA in Iowa, should make voters wonder just what sort of trade policy Clinton and Obama really support. None of the senators running for president voted today, although all four have issued public statements taking positions on the Peru pact.

McCain must succinctly elaborate on the key features of this trade agreement and tell why they are to the benefit of both countries. McCain must refute the disinformation that the Democrats have repeated in their talking points.

The average voter has no understanding of this agreement and fail to see how it affects them econonically. The lazy and incurious media don’t provide the facts. Unfortunately, the media and union “fact sheets” are the only sources for these average voters, keeping them ill-informed.

One of the things that killed any recovery from the 1929 crash and turned it into the Great Depression was the choking of international trade by measure such as the Smoot-Hawley tariffs. (And I’m embarrassed to say a Republican Administration passed that idiocy.) Obama’s answer, as well as being a lie about the Uribe Administration, shows he’s cut from the same cloth as Smoot, Hawley, and Herbert Hoover. And it is WHY the Democrats have conducted their ShowBoatCampaign with Obama this election: it’s big stage presentation and messaging (complete with fainting audiences at the Big Celebrity) and that Obama has not strayed too far from the script into any revelations about his plans (or the Democrats’ politics): keep it close to the vest, don’t reveal reality to anyone, attack (or sue) anyone who even LOOKs like they’re prying and just do the ROUTINE ON STAGE BEFORE THE CAMERAS until the curtain comes down.

THEN go about doing what’s been set in motion off-stage and behind the curtain. Which is Communism and making nice with Communist/Socialist nations, particularly the ones with cartels.

I was just rereading some posts I wrote from the last election, as to Kerry’s “associations”: the Sandinista, North Vietnamese/China Communists, Iran (investments he has there).

And Kerry’s been selling Obama to hapless American Leftist voters because, so he keeps saying, “we need Obama to talk to these people” (our enemies, his friends).

WHY OBAMA’S COMMUNIST CONNECTIONS ARE NOT HEADLINES from American Thinker.

Pretty well explains Obama’s coast to the top on the backs of the gullible, willing, non-examining Left.

I have read on the internet so many times from Obama campaigners the words, “what’s WRONG with Communism” or, “so WHAT if it’s Communism, what’s wrong with that”?

They’re obviously the indoctrinated, misled generations that American Thinker is describing in that article, and the Bill Ayers and Obama’s of the world are to blame for that.

S on October 18, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Another thing: most who participate on this site are familiar with the story of Communism and Hollywood, at least the Hollywood that has existed since the Conservative moguls left the scene (Goldman, DeMille, etc.).

Years ago, I read several articles about Spielberg visiting Cuba and he returned and enthused that his “eight hours with Castro were the most important hours of (his) life” (I paraphrase).

Not the birth of his children, not his wedding, not meeting his wife for the first time, not their first kiss, but his powwow with Castro.

I think that sums-up what’s wrong with our U.S. entertainment industry: they perceive truly evil individuals as heroic.

The Colombian unions have long been infiltrated by FARC operatives and have undermined the political process in Columbia.
Hawthorne on October 18, 2008 at 3:16 PM

Not just the Colombian unions. FARC have infiltrated US labor unions as well. Google this guy and you’ll see what I mean. He goes around the country demonizing Uribe and lauding Chavez, depending on the venue. He also associates with pro-FARC groups and individuals.

Golden Boy on October 18, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Um, aren’t the unions down there communist and associated with FARC? So killing a union leader is killing a communist agitator affiliated with bloodthirsty terrorists.

One way or the other, the mask will come off of B.O. after November. The American people, including many if the idiots who are chanting his name right now will be disturbed by all we find out.
I only pray that he will be returning to finish his one and only term in the Senate and not be heading to the Oval Office to inflict pain on this country for the next four years.

I thought like that a long time ago, but when they are in the W.H. the only way we will know there is turmoil in the world is when are hair is falling out from radiation.

Just how much does this reporter make? The country needs to know! And what is his middle name?

csdeven on October 18, 2008 at 7:57 PM

Obama’s ignorance will become our expense. BHO is going to hurt America in a way that no foreign power could.

Yeah, and a lot of Communist and Venezuela/Chavez/Castro/China/Guevera flags, banners, images and such were displayed in most of those larger “immigrant” (so-called) “rallies” nationwide in the last years. And the whole Hispanic/Latino ethnic supremacy movement is aligned with same.

The problems we have as a nation here in the U.S. with unbridled immigration and illegal immigration included, really IS a national security concern. It’s no more “racist” to oppose illegal immigration than it is “racist” to not vote for Obama. BUT the same nasty accusations about both arise from exactly the same politic.

If Hussein Obama takes Ohio by less than 200K votes and Ohio tips the election to Obama, then we will be faced will a completely illegitimate POTUS.

Interesting times ahead.

iconoclast on October 18, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Obama does nothing but regurgitate the tired, old protectionist rhetoric and excuses from organized labor. It gives a different meaning to the term “no brainer”.

For Obama supporters, like those in the media who are suddenly emboldened to ask aloud “why does Ayers matter to anyone?”, I can only ask why they don’t see clearly. But obviously, they have their eyes closed.

The answer is easy: Obama’s entire philosophy is informed by leftists like Ayers. When he goes to his “300 foreign policy advisors” – and it will be often, since he doesn’t know shit – he’ll need to decide whom to believe, and it’s obvious that the ones who’ll get his ear are the radical leftists.

Every issue on which he has been forced into commenting on exposes a man woefully uninformed about just about everything, who’s first response is dictated by a knee-jerk.

Jaibones on October 18, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Let’s see now, Iran spends billions building its military and the bomb, tries to destabilize Iraq, kills Americans, funds anti America terrorists and their leader is a lunatic that spews anti America and anti Israel hate and the Democrats including Obama have no compunction with hey! Let’s be budds, have a no precondition chat, normalize relations, let’s validate the murderous bastards!

Columbia, on the other hand rescues Americans, kills terrorists and drug lords has a beneficial trade relationship with us, they are our allies in every sense of the word and they also just happen to be fighting the Dictator next door (that the Dems also adore), but the unions in Columbia are crying about trade, so, the Democrats say, screw them! We’d rather play footsie with Iran, because you know, their civil rights record is so much better.

That’s whats so nice about liberals, they peg the hypocrisy meter, every time.

I won’t usually watch Gretta for any reason, but I’ve got to say that she and David Asman are kicking major ass on FNC right now.

They’re actually telling the truth and making the connections that should’ve been made 2 years ago.

Excellent, so far.

techno_barbarian on October 18, 2008 at 9:30 PM

This is not surprising, the Dems have been shaking hands with the wrong people for decades!

Kerry/Ortega

Carter/Arafat

Pelosi/Asaad

Albright/NORKs

Carter/Chavez

Biden/Lugar/Soviets

Need we know more?

AND THIS!!!

jawbone on October 18, 2008 at 9:53 PM

For the younger crew that’s Daniel Ortega, Nicaraguan Communist and Soviet stooge shaking hands with Waffles and Tom Harkin (with wife).

Here again

These will be Obama staff members…no doubt!

jawbone on October 18, 2008 at 10:01 PM

Now I know just how intelligent Obama is. He laughs like an idiot when the old guy thinks he’s making good arguments. He must be smarter since he’s young and highly amused.

snaggletoothie on October 18, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Rather than smiling out of arrogance, I think that the smirk is one of BO’s “tells”. I think he’s been carefully trained (programmed) to smile if something is angering him, rather than risk showing that anger (which might scare those precious middle-of-the-roaders).

I haven’t gone back and reviewed the debate, but the impression I had at the time was that the biggest grins came in response to the hardest whacks from McCain. A better-performing candidate than McCain might have been able to see that and could have adjusted his oration on-the-fly to maximize the grins.

bofh on October 18, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Obama can be called a no-brainer, as in, he has no brains.

benrand on October 19, 2008 at 1:32 AM

Those smirks and smiles should have been much worse than
George H. W. Bush’s looking at his watch!
