Open thread: Palinmania on SNL

Will they keep it light, or will Lorne and co. gratify the wettest wet dreams of HuffPo and dKos by sandbagging her with some sort of “Don’t vote for this woman!” ambush? Either way, the long-awaited confrontation between the ‘Cuda and the woman who claims she’ll have to leave Earth if Palin wins makes it worth watching. Weigh in below. While we wait, food for thought from Fred Barnes:

In the weeks after the convention, she was limited to two major TV interviews. When she did poorly in one–the Katie Couric interview–Democrats and hostile columnists unloaded, calling her unqualified to be vice president. There was little contrary evidence in the press by which to judge her or defend her.

I asked Palin whether she’d do things differently if she could repeat those weeks. She answered by silently mouthing “yes.” When two aides–we were on a McCain-Palin bus with staff and security–said “yes” aloud, she chimed in, “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”…

Now, despite her political talent, Palin’s future is unclear.

think casey wilson just killed her acting career?

darkegop on October 19, 2008 at 1:11 AM

Casey Wilson? I’m sorry, there was no Casey Wilson on the cast of SNL. That was an extra, and unfortunately they had a tragic car accident tomorrow… er yesterday.

Enoxo on October 19, 2008 at 1:13 AM

Check out CNN is featuring Sarah now. There actually doing a nice job so far!

Is Sarah in Tall Boots??? And a chip clip in her hair???? MY HERO!!!!!!!

pullingmyhairout on October 19, 2008 at 1:01 AM

A chip clip! LOL (I always called them butterfly clips, but I’m stealing that!)

I don’t think so. Lorne is a Republican and with Amy Poehler leaving in a couple of weeks, they need all the female talent they can get.

I don’t think so. Lorne is a Republican

SnarkVader on October 19, 2008 at 1:14 AM

When did Lorne become a Republican? In all his campaign contributions, he’s given to one Republican candidate (McCain during the primaries).

Ronnie on October 19, 2008 at 1:16 AM

My funny story was low enough on the last page I don’t think people saw it.

The funniest thing that happened during this show:

In Michigan we have a proposal (Prop. 2) to allow stem cell research. There is the typical types of commercials one would except, up to and including a young paraplegic cheerleader. Anyway during one of the last commercial breaks the local station misjudged a hand off….

It was a Heroes commercial and there was the typical dramatic music…

Peter Patrelli: Can’t you see you’re going to destroy the world?
Peter’s dad: I don’t see it that way, Peter.
Ominous voice as the words appear on the screen: You can’t choose your family.
:screen cuts to a cute blond paraplegic in a wheelchair:
blond: I was paralyzed in an accident.

Most tragically timed mistake EVER! I wish I had TiVo, because you’d have to see it to believe how flawless the transition to the stem cell commercial was.

Micheal on October 19, 2008 at 1:16 AM

I think not.

ManlyRash on October 19, 2008 at 1:12 AM

Really? Other than the fact that we haven’t been attacked in 7 years, are you REALLY happy with the man? I’m not. He’s not conservative. he didn’t curtail spending and he passed the biggest entitlement program (prescription drug benefit) since the New Deal. Sorry, not happy with the guy these days.

Ingleside? GP? or Rockport?

pullingmyhairout on October 19, 2008 at 1:19 AM

I have to say Palin did hold her own well, but I find myself wishing I had only watched the first and last four minutes. SNL has degenerated into the biggest pile of garbage I have ever seen; this episode could have been summarized as “cops are idiots, CEO’s are spoiled brats, and Republicans are freaks.”

It was a LOT better back when they had the skit with the driving cat.

Even the commercials (at least, in my area, I don’t know how or if they air them by state) made it sound like the whole thing was being aired for elitist girly-men who have never stood up using the john in their lives.

And yeah, as long as that’s been brought up, I would be surprised if the cast member that hugged Gov. Palin lasts another episode.

Ryan Gandy on October 19, 2008 at 1:19 AM

BTW – how come NO ONE has had anything to say about the world’s most famous handyman’s appearance on the Huckster’s show? I’m referring, of course, to Joe the Un-Licensed Plumber. Could it be that his fifteen minutes were through before they went on air? Or did the interview not happen?

I pretty much tuned the entire episode out until I saw or heard Palin. What I did see, though, was a horrible condemnation of Josh Brolin’s acting skills.

His once and only great achievement is Goonies, which I enjoy. But that’s all.

The ladies there were very helpful, and suggested that I talk to the elections officer in Sinton. Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 19, 2008 at 1:31 AM

Speedwagon, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who, in retrospect, thinks that the Gibson-Couric strategy was right.

My guess is that even the McCainiacs, even at this late date, were surprised at just how aggressive and hostile Gibson and Couric were, especially when you compare how the two handled BO and others in earlier interviews. I think they were also trying to capitalize on the Convention smash hit as quickly as possible to as large as possible an audience, probably were a little too busy congratulating themselves over snubbing NBC, and were hoping at the time to improve Palin’s profile among the mass of voters – swing voters – rather than identify her as a base conservative. I’m sure the strategy looked good on paper, anyway, and I’m even more sure that they’re all aware they hurt her and themselves.

Nobody’s perfect – but consider how well they handled the initial rollout – long thought to be the most crucial part of introducing a virtual unknown like her. Otherwise, I think they’ve gotten their acts together on her. I wouldn’t be surprised if she takes another crack at a mainstreamer, soon, and kills.

CK MacLeod on October 19, 2008 at 1:33 AM

JtP on Huck is going to be re-broadcast in about 20 mins.

I missed the first showing, too – was out walking the dogs. Other grown men were watching Missouri getting destroyed by Texas. By the time I got back, both JtP and Missouri were done, but, like I said 20 mins from now.

CK MacLeod on October 19, 2008 at 1:34 AM

My guess is that even the McCainiacs, even at this late date, were surprised at just how aggressive and hostile Gibson and Couric were, especially when you compare how the two handled BO and others in earlier interviews.

Not only that, but they allowed them to follow Palin around for days. The Couric interview was rolled out over 2 weeks.

Hey–I just watched the Palin clips… SNL was on downstairs but I found the clips… She was great. I don’t know what the belly aching was about! She was the smoothest politician I’ve seen on late night. She was a natural. Tina Fey better worry about Sarah taking her gig on 30 rock! And I’m not overly excited by Palin… I mean think she was a good pick because of how she consolidated the base but I have my doubts. If I thought she was bad I’d be saying it.

…There have been particularly intensive efforts to make sure Mr Obama has his national security team in place, not just because he is widely expected to win the election on November 4, but because intelligence analysts believe America’s enemies are more likely to try to take advantage of Mr Obama’s international inexperience than they would of Mr McCain…
.
BRACE YOURSELF:
Mr Kerry, an Army veteran, is also a contender to take control of the Pentagon, but many expect that post to go to a Republican, perhaps the maverick senator Chuck Hagel. Colin Powell, a former secretary of state and chairman of the joint chiefs could return to government if he endorses Obama, as many expect. Unfortunately one NY hot shot has chosen to do his best impersonation of walking around with his head inserted straight up Micheal Moore’s a$$:

This is on the front of many Middle East papers and news sights:

Trump expected Bush impeachment over Iraq
Diehard Republican Donald Trump says US President should have been impeached for Iraq War.

Washington, 17 October 2008 (Middle East Online)

Property mogul and diehard Republican Donald Trump told CNN on Wednesday that President George W. Bush misled the US into the Iraq War and should have been impeached when the Democrats took control of Congress in 2006.

“I was surprised that she didn’t do more in terms of Bush and going after Bush,” Trump said in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, referring to Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“It … just seemed like she was going to really look to impeach Bush and get him out of office, which personally I think would have been a wonderful thing.”

Trump, 62, said Bush misled the United States into waging war on Iraq, a much worse offense than a dalliance with a White House intern his predecessor Bill Clinton was impeached for in 1999.

“He lied. He got us into the war with lies,” Trump said about Bush. “And I mean — look at the trouble Bill Clinton got into with something that was totally unimportant. And they tried to impeach him, which was nonsense.

“And yet Bush got us into this horrible war with lies, by lying, by saying they had weapons of mass destruction, by saying all sorts of things that turned out not to be true,” he added.

I guess dumba$$ here was on Jupiter during the 90’s and up until we went to war when all the democrats,CIA,Defense Dept.,British Intelligence,French Intelligence,German Intelligence,Cnn,NBC,ABC,CBS,Fox,and the UN were telling everybody about Saddam’s WMD’s/Nuclear program and ties to al-qaeda,genocide,failure to comply with 17 UN resolutions…etc….etc…etc..

Maybe he should read these to (all stated Bush did not lie about pre-war Intel :

9/11 commission report
2003 senate intelligence report
Butler report
2008 senate intelligence report(even this liberal partisan report stated Bush did not lie).

Thanks dumba$$ for adding to the propaganda machine in the Middle East that helps recruit enemies of Freedom around the world.

Frankly I think Palin may won a lot of votes tonight.
And destroyed the Tina Fey cartoon figure by showing
up on the show. Palin won a major victory tonight.

The rap skit was pretty funny. And Sarah’s definitely more beautiful and telegenic than Tina Fey.

I’m guessing the show got huge ratings and this can only help her image.

Just watched the Moose Rap skit on internet video, and thought it was actually pretty durn funny. And Sarah! was jes fine – very fine. Including the Tina Fey sign-off.

And, though I’m still kind of hot for Tina (sue me, I just like the type), I agree with the others who’ve noted that next to Sarah! she looks kind of scrawny.

check the Zogby Poll analysis cited above (previous page I believe) about where the indies get their politics – this was a major win for M-P.

And JtP wasn’t bad on Huck either – though the show was basically a Republican informercial.

Oh yeah – one last observation – for those of you upset about her appearing on the same show as Josh Brolin – it may not have occurred to anyone immediately, and a lot of people here may not like it much, but it symbolically distances M-P even further from Bush – shows them getting along with/sharing the stage with Bush-opponents – which is another thing M-P wants.

DU Inmates are huyuking about Josh Brolin wiping his hand on his pants after touching Palin.
If he did, he is the biggest class-less tool evah. I didn’t catch that.

Pasalubong on October 19, 2008 at 1:31 AM

Oh, he’s just gay that’s all.

Sapwolf on October 19, 2008 at 3:00 AM

I just watched the skits of Gov. Palin’s over again, and I thought she did brilliant. She was smooth and was a great sport.

I’m trying to find an ending shot of the goodbyes, to see if Brolin did wipe his hand off, and to smile and laugh when the one cast member embraced Gov. Palin in a HUGE, warm hug right in the middle of the camera shot.

Well, I finally got to see it, and I hate to disagree with so many here, but I thought she was GREAT. I thought the opening sketch was pretty good, and she did herself and John McCain a TON of good.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect, seeing the reactions here and from liberals, but I am VERY glad she did this. I was one of those who thought it would be a good idea, and I am more convinced than ever it was.

I agree, also, with those who remarked how much more beautiful she is than Tina Fey. That was evident the second her face was on the screen.

Way to go, McCain/Palin!

I find this DU thread incredible.

They are thanking NBC for making a fool of Palin, and they don’t think Palin is in on the joke.

I seriously can’t believe how stupid these people are. Palin was GREAT.

We’ll see when the next round of polls comes out who’ll have the last laugh. Based on the early indications, it’s not gonna be the DUmmies.

Purple Fury on October 19, 2008 at 3:32 AM

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I liked it. Alec Baldwin was a pretty good sport, I thought. I like him as an actor and I think he can be really funny when he’s not talking about politics. And Palin’s “Live from New York” wasn’t weak. Non-performers butcher that line all the time and it’s cringe-inducing.

OMG, I just watched the Weekend Update segment, and she was even better in that! She’s extremely natural, beautiful, and funny…I am THRILLED with her performance!

The DUmmies are living up to their name tonight. Wow.

capitalist piglet on October 19, 2008 at 3:34 AM

She was AWESOME on weekend update. That was hilarious.

nickj116 on October 19, 2008 at 3:35 AM

Um – when was the last time that DU was more right than wrong about anything (don’t they usually come out around 50-50 on whether the sky is blue or water is wet?)

CK MacLeod on October 19, 2008 at 3:36 AM

This was a wonderful thing, because she was able to contrast reality with the parody the audience has become so familiar with. Tina Fey’s characterization of her is clearly amplified, like all parodies are – and this gave Governor Palin a chance to show that she’s actually an articulate, attractive woman, who isn’t the fluffy airhead Fey portrays…but she also demonstrates that she can laugh at herself, and has a great personality.

This was a terrific thing. It honestly was.
