Will they keep it light, or will Lorne and co. gratify the wettest wet dreams of HuffPo and dKos by sandbagging her with some sort of “Don’t vote for this woman!” ambush? Either way, the long-awaited confrontation between the ‘Cuda and the woman who claims she’ll have to leave Earth if Palin wins makes it worth watching. Weigh in below. While we wait, food for thought from Fred Barnes:
In the weeks after the convention, she was limited to two major TV interviews. When she did poorly in one–the Katie Couric interview–Democrats and hostile columnists unloaded, calling her unqualified to be vice president. There was little contrary evidence in the press by which to judge her or defend her.
I asked Palin whether she’d do things differently if she could repeat those weeks. She answered by silently mouthing “yes.” When two aides–we were on a McCain-Palin bus with staff and security–said “yes” aloud, she chimed in, “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”…
Now, despite her political talent, Palin’s future is unclear.

But almost intentionally so.
I still gotta say…not based on tonight’s SNL, but through it all…Palin isn’t going to pay off for McCain. Pure and simple.
JetBoy on October 18, 2008 at 11:50 PM
I’m on the west coast so I can’t watch it yet, but I think she gets points just for going on. Everybody pretty much knows the show sucks. Glad to hear she got a big cheer from the audience – I thought she would. Even if they aren’t going to vote for her, they’ll respect her for facing down those who’ve ridiculed her so mercilessly.

Palin said Steve was her favorite Baldwin brother, and said to to what’s his name’s face.
Right_of_Attila on October 18, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Yeah I have to say that the lack of laughter when Brolin was trying to rip Bush was pretty surprising to me actually — I thought it would get howls of laughter and applause… and there was just dead air and crickets…
Republican on October 18, 2008 at 11:51 PM
That is so unnecessary.
Guardian on October 18, 2008 at 11:51 PM
The reason SNL is still “relevant and funny” is because Tina Fey looks like someone famous.
econavenger on October 18, 2008 at 11:51 PM
lol. All data must be shoved into predetermined conclusion.
Spirit of 1776 on October 18, 2008 at 11:52 PM
That’s always been the case.
Palin hit a home run. Easily a home run.
Yet people are moaning about Baldwin complaining “to her face” without mentioning that she (well, her characterization of her) got the better of him (well, his characterization of him) in the sketch. I can’t believe that I’m having to point that out.
She won the sketch.
Baldwin’s character lost.
Fey’s impersonation lost.
Home.
Run.
Enjoy, guys. She’s the bona-fide star of politics at this moment.
And, might I say, the hottest freaking thing on television in quite a while. I mean, Fey is cute, but when she followed Fey on the screen, it REALLY underscored her hotness.
rjwest21 on October 18, 2008 at 11:52 PM
The basic take away from this is Sarah Palin is a totally class act.
wordsson on October 18, 2008 at 11:52 PM
I don’t know. I’m watching the rest of the show and it’s not funny either. So perhaps the writers just stick!

Didn’t Alec Baldwin recently actually call Democrats on the carpet for the bailout mess? I mean, I know exactly who he is and what his history is (with the Henry Hyde thing, all that) – but I think he just did something pretty amazing on some television program.
Or maybe I dreamed that.
capitalist piglet on October 18, 2008 at 11:52 PM
But what was supposed to be funny about the first sketch?

PREDICTION: Drudge headline tomorrow… highest SNL ratings since 2003…

Sarah made Tina look ugly. Mission accomplished, in spite of anyone else’s plans.

I’m just watching now for the weekend review. If she makes another cameo, that’d be the time.
Micheal on October 18, 2008 at 11:53 PM
He’s probably the only one who would appear with her. Note no other cast members interacted with her.
Ronnie on October 18, 2008 at 11:53 PM
And it was a delayed cheer for the Bush bashing. To me it meant that they were not amused, but the Obamabots took over so some seem to just clap as to not be called a racist.
WoosterOh on October 18, 2008 at 11:53 PM
You know what would have REALLY been great? If they’d asked the Sarah the exact same questions they’d just asked Tina and Sarah could have blown them away with actual responses.
JustTruth101 on October 18, 2008 at 11:53 PM
I do think that this is highlighting the fact that SNL has nothing.

Th millions who have rallied to Mac because of Palin will prove you otherwise when we vote them into office.
Bishop on October 18, 2008 at 11:54 PM
I thought it was funny. Sarah did great — and as much as I detest Alec Baldwin’s politics, I think he is hilarious, especially when he hosts SNL. And in case some of you missed it, Alec earned a few kudos from conservatives within the last couple of weeks when he appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher and skewered Barney Frank and other Democrats for the Fannie/Freddie/Credit Crisis debacle.
Well BC won (AWESOME) and the Sox are 2 outs away from tying the ALCS… between the Eagles, the Sox and Sarah, I’m practically on the ceiling.
D2Boston on October 18, 2008 at 11:55 PM
They’re trying to be funny about financial hardship. It’s not funny. Even the Macgruber stuff wears out fast.
wordsson on October 18, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Oh PO, If McCain wanted there VP to be a factor then they should have made sure they made some policy pivots to actually fit her narrative… Team McCain have nobody to blame for themselves, Palin deserves very little of it if McCain loses…

Smooth, baby, smooth!
CP on October 18, 2008 at 11:55 PM
I was hoping for more, but she looked really beautiful…
Yesterday, Rush was quoting some story having to do with research about people connecting with a candidate’s attractiveness, and how even if viewed for a second, there is an impact and it influences their vote. AND further, even if their views differ from that candidate, they will change their views to conform to the candidates view. Now, when he was telling it, I felt a little depressed, because Obama is considered to be an attractive man, but after seeing Sarah, I realized there is no way he’s as pretty as our girl Sarah – and when the camera pulled in tight to her face, she sparkled!
It will be interesting to know how the ratings were for this show.
Queen0fCups on October 18, 2008 at 11:55 PM
MacGruber was funny once. ONCE.
Ugly on October 18, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Kensington on October 18, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Why doesn’t Palin just do a press conference already so everyone will shut the hell up about it?
Speedwagon82 on October 18, 2008 at 11:56 PM
This show only has it’s “moments” here and there. Although in Baldwin’s defense, the “Schwette Balls” sketch is one of the funniest…
JetBoy on October 18, 2008 at 11:56 PM
If Sarah doesn’t make another cameo (I agree the news segment would be best), I’m going to be pissed that I’m even staying up for anything after she did the intro. Wow this is bad.

KentAllard on October 18, 2008 at 11:58 PM
The rest of the show so far has been extremely lame. What does it say about liberals that need a conservative, someone they hate ideologically, to get them ratings? Just having Sarah show up was the highlight of their show.
Guardian on October 18, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Palin deserves little of it…but the GOPers who were demanding a “Palin” pick will take the blame from me if McCain loses.

I’ve changed the channel. Boy, SNL really stinks without Fey looking like Palin.
If Palin shows up again, it will be on YouTube. Good night.

Bishop on October 19, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Exactly right. It wasn’t funny, but it made Palin look good. Baldwin’s about-face when he “learned” it was Palin and not Fey basically said that the lefty hatred toward her is pure politics — signaling that there really isn’t anything wrong with her at all. That’s a big win for Palin. She had Fey slinking off stage, signifying that Palin is the “real deal,” the big star, the boss. And Lorne appearing with her gave her another little nod of being the more substantial person there among those un-funny lefties. AND, she got a huge applause, while Barbra Streisand’s stepson got polite, cringe-worthy applause. It’s all good.

abinitioadinfinitum on October 19, 2008 at 12:00 AM
McCain and his advisers made the ultimate pick. Many, many people (possibly more than those pulling for Palin) were pushing for Jindal, Romney, or Crist. He picked Palin.
amerpundit on October 19, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Well – it was pretty even. Baldwin got to be the stereotypical liberal jerk, THEN had to play the embarrassed and recanting liberal. Then Sarah got to say that “Steven” was her favorite “Baldwin”. Then, Baldwin took her on his arm and escorted her to Tina Fey, which actually came across as somewhat classy on his part. Sort of like he was the only one besides Loren that would treat the “enemy” with respect.
Oh – and Sarah got to get a little dig in at Tina when Marky Mark came by and Loren said “he didn’t like our characterization of him” and she said “Tell me about it.”
I thought it went well.
grtflmark on October 19, 2008 at 12:01 AM
According to Drudge, Obama’s starting to put together his Cabinet… combine that with 100K people rallying in St. Louis, Pelosi/Reid’s manifesto of crap being developed for an interim session of Congress… I hope the American people wake up before they walk off the cliffs like lemmings…
Republican on October 19, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Actually, he blamed Democrats for the subprime crisis on Bill Maher (I think that was the show).
amerpundit on October 19, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Feh.
Bush is in the 20s.
A GOPer had virtually zero chance this year. Heck, we’re going to lose plenty of seats in the senate & congress. If the veep were Mitt or Huck or…..well, anyone else, McCain would be in the high 30s. The only thing that has kept Obama from running away with this thing is Sarah Palin. It’s just not our year, guys, yet…..Sarah is keeping this thing close.
How any sane person could deny that is beyond me.
rjwest21 on October 19, 2008 at 12:02 AM
The only important thing, is how she looked. And next to Tina Fey at the end of the skit, she looked stunningly gorgeous. Even liberal men are going to realize that, and hopefully, will lighten up on her a bit. As for liberal women? Well, you can guess their reaction…

Oy, I thought I was the only one pulling for Crist. McCain, IMHO, was forced into picking Palin by the supposed “base”, who are still so enamored with Palin that most forget who is actually running for President.
What might cause McCain to lose this election is that “base” who gave McCain so much CR*P during the primaries over such misunderstood topics like the so-called “amnesty”.

darkegop on October 19, 2008 at 12:09 AM
Obama’s going to be President. I’m voting for McCain, just to try to decrease his “mandate”, but I can only cancel one fraudulent ACORN vote out. (I now live in Ohio, by the way.) As for his select cabinet though, it reminds me of what Buckley said: that he’d rather be governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston phonebook than by the faculty of Harvard (where my wife’s doing her doctorate, by the way).
Tzetzes on October 19, 2008 at 12:10 AM
I was shocked to hear Alec Baldwin on Maher’s show be honest enough to call out the Democrates for their involvement. But he was venemous in his attack on Sarah Palin. So tonight might have an interesting affect on him. He’s going to have to handle the fact that she’s an engaging, classy person he disagrees with, not the “diseased” creature he caricatured her as on “Real Time.”
