Gray Lady trolls Facebook for trash on Cindy McCain

Jodi Kantor apparently got so desperate for dirt on Cindy McCain for the tiresome rehash the New York Times published today that she tried suckering teenagers on Facebook into cooperating with her.  The McCain campaign released the contents of an e-mail Kantor sent to one of Bridget McCain’s 16-year-old classmates through the social-networking site.  Is this what “political correspondents” do?:

I saw on facebook that you went to Xavier, and if you don’t mind, I’d love to ask you some advice about a story. I’m a reporter at the New York Times, writing a profile of Cindy McCain, and we are trying to get a sense of what she is like as a mother. So I’m reaching out to fellow parents at her kids’ schools. My understanding is that some of her older kids went to Brophy/Xavier, but I’m trying to figure out what school her 16 year old daughter Bridget attends– and a few people said it was PCDS. Do you know if that’s right? Again, we’re not really reporting on the kids, just seeking some fellow parents who can talk about what Mrs. McCain is like.

Also, if you know anyone else who I should talk to– basically anyone who has encountered Mrs. McCain and might be able to share impressions– that would be great.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Jodi Kantor

This isn’t a message from a political correspondent.  It’s an attempt by a gossip-rag muckraker to get teenagers to dish dirt on a celebrity.  What does this have to do with politics? Quite frankly, the idea that the parents of Bridget’s classmates having anything pertinent to say about Mrs. McCain strikes me as prima facie evidence that the New York Times is desperate to derail John McCain in any manner possible.

Kantor’s piece is more evidence of that.  She makes reference to Cindy McCain supporting her husband when the NYT reported that McCain had to be separated from Vicki Iseman because of allegations of an affair.  That story was trash when the Times wrote it, and it’s particularly reprehensible for the Times to resurrect it now, without any reference to the avalanche of criticism they received for running that hit piece on the word of two disgruntled former staffers that wouldn’t identify themselves.

The New York Times long ago transformed itself into an advocacy organization for Barack Obama.  Trolling for dirt on Facebook among teenagers for hit pieces on a candidate’s spouse hits a new low.  Does the National Enquirer even do that?

Whoa…. Jodi Kantor has not been the media darling..

Kantor Watch

When she was the young editor of the ’Arts & Leisure’ section of The New York Times, riding the coat tails of disgraced editor Howell Raines, Jodi Kantor came to be the willful embodiment of downmarket journalism. Since her ’reassignment’ after Raines’s departure, Kantor has practiced her hackwork in long form, chasing the Zeitgeist, writing thought pieces for the Times on pressing subjects such as the changing size of television sets.

Time to “vet” the “reporter”!

My apologies. No sleight intended. I guess I tried too hard to sell my point. I read that in either 2000 or 2004 (or both), the GOP raised more money in 45243 (something like $240M) than anywhere in the country. I merely wanted to make clear that the writer of the letter is probably about as close to every American’s neighbor as you can get.

OT: Obama NH Event Scraps National Anthem

No Obama rally is complete without a few celebrity sightings.

Actor Justin Long, co-star of “Live Free or Die Hard” and the popular “I’m a Mac/I’m a PC” commercials was spotted by the middle schoolers and posed for photos. Actor John de Lance, better known as “Q” from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” was also present.

Not present, or at least not singing the National Anthem at the rally was Londonderry senior Zach Bencal.

Bencal, who sings the anthem for a number of school events and is actively involved in local community theatre, had been contacted by the Obama campaign to sing the anthem. He agreed to do so, then was told later in the evening the anthem had been scratched from the program. Bencal said he was told by the campaign the decision was a simple programming change to make room for another speaker.

“I guess it just wasn’t meant to be,” Bencal said.

Sandra Abrevaya, communications director for the Obama campaign’s Manchester office, confirmed the choice had simply been a last-minute scratch from the rally’s program, which included the Pledge of Allegiance.

“We regret the miscommunication with Zach about today’s event but we are pleased that several other New Hampshire residents were able to speak at today’s event, where thousands of voters in both parties gathered to hear Sen. Obama discuss his plan to bring the change we need to Washington.”

First: Scratching the National Anthem for a speaker? When did the National Anthem get changed into an opera? They couldn’t spare the minute and a half?

Second: I can’t believe the Q Continuum is in the tank. Oy.

Third: So did they scratch both the Pledge and the National Anthem? I guess that’s what we get for a “citizen of the world.”

I don’t know if anyone has noticed lately, but there is no journalistic integrity left in this country. There are now only mouthpieces for the liberal left, like the NYT, that are spending less time covering the news honestly and instead are using their resources to create hit pieces on anyone who does not agree with their point of view.

No kidding, we know more about a plumber from Ohio than we do about the guy running for President.

It was a tactical decision to scratch the anthem from the event. Obuza figured it might not reflect well on his campaign if they played the Russian national anthem.

Wouldn’t you think that even the leftist media would finally have to acknowlege to their inner selves that Obama and the Obama campaign is heaped so high and thick with bad people, crooked groups, lies, mis-representations and secrecy that even they, assuming they have any brains, have to say so?

jeanie on October 18, 2008 at 11:55 AM

I was talking to a DC lawyer friend of mne yesterday. He made a chilling prediction that made a lot of sense to me.

One of the first things we will see out of NYT and the other Obama cheerleaders in the media once he is inaugurated is a coordinated call for John Roberts to resign as Chief Justice. They will say that Roberts is a key legacy of George Bush that must be wiped out, and that as long as he remains Chief Justice the people will “lack confidence” in the Supreme Court. We can expect a ’sense of the Congress’ resolution to be passed if the Democrats have a 60-vote majority.

The other call will be for abolition of the Electoral College.

I see some conservatives on the blogs wondering why Obama is advertising in the Blue states and campaigning in places like Philadelphia. I think they are trying to drive a popular vote landslide for Obama, so that the media can declare a mandate for things like Roberts’ resignation.

rockmom on October 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM

rockmom on October 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM

They can “call” for his resignation all they want, but they cannot make him resign, and they can’t remove him.

A change in the electoral college will require a constitutional amendment. Not likely to pass the various state legislations.

I heard similar comments also from a SF lawyer recently. His take on this was simply that our founders put in place firewalls exactly for this purpose. Liberals could never (at least not in this era) get enough states to go along with this crappy attempt at Socialism. Our government is designed so wonderfully, one might think God helped our founders out just a bit. Liberals are exposing themselves for all to see. The mask is off and their raw agenda is exposed. The people might stumble and fumble a bit, but the people will get it right in the end.

Keemo on October 18, 2008 at 12:22 PM

If at this stage in the campaign the MSM is trying to hurt John McCain, that says something. Yesterday in New Hampshire, Obama reminded his followers not to get cocky (funny advice coming from him). That says something, too.

They’re worried.

First Sarah Palin and now Joe the Plumber: Two White people, plainspoken, who cut through Obama’s BS and expose him for the liar he is. The polls are tightening. Joe Biden can’t spell. Michelle Obama.

They’re very worried.

But why? I thought this election was over. Isn’t Obama planning some garish party in Chicago? Isn’t Queen Pelosi planning an interim session of Congress?

They should be worried.

But they can undermine every decision his Court makes that they do not like, and trash every opinion he writes, and publish “leaks” from within the Court suggesting that he is running the court ideologically, etc. etc. and hammer aaway that HE is the one “undermining the people’s faith in our judicial system.” Roberts is way too classy to respond in kind, and his silence will be cited as further “evidence” that “the people cannot trust him to find Justice for them.”

There is a TON that the New York Times and its pals can do after this election is over. Do not kid yourself. The election is just the first phase of the campaign to undermine all of the institutions of democracy in America.

Well, at least if Obama wins, we won’t have to listen to him blaming things on the previous administration for very long, because the Democrats are firmly on record that by 233 days of your first term, you are on your own, and no matter what happens it cannot be blamed on anyone but the current President!

That’s why if Obama is the President on September 11, 2009, I think we should have a nationwide “You’re a big boy now!” party for him. We’ll probably all need a good laugh by then.

Jaibones on October 18, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Once again, the once-great New York Times has shown its ideological bias as well as its ability to disguise editorial opinion as straight news reporting with yesterday’s hit piece on Cindy McCain.

The article, written by Jodi Kantor and David Halbfinger, may be found at the below web site:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/18/us/politics/18cindy.html?bl&ex=1224475200&en=12299783805b8c72&ei=5087

The general gist of the article is that Mrs McCain is a dishonest, politically ambitious woman, who would do anything to advance her husband’s political aspirations.

For example,

“From the start, Mrs. McCain’s marriage has been defined by her husband’s ambitions, and despite her sometimes punishing ride in political life, she does whatever she must to help fulfill them.”

Fact or opinion?

“Those close to Mrs. McCain say she aspires to be like another blonde, glamorous figure married to an older man: Diana, the Princess of Wales.”

Who says that? Unnamed sources, that’s who.

“Mrs. McCain expanded her childhood home, turning it into a 10,000-square-foot mansion that struck more than one visitor as a shrine to her husband.”

And who are those visitors?

In addition, the article also contains implications that the McCain marriage is less than ideal citing their extended periods away from each other.

In researching the article, co-author, Jodi Kantor, even dug up a schoolmate of McCain’s daughter through Facebook and wrote her this note:

Nice, huh? If only the Times had shown that kind of investigative imagination in the John Edwards story-or the myriad of stories about Barack Obama’s lifetime associations that the Times has poo-poohed.

Speaking of Obama, you might want to compare the Cindy McCain story with the Times’ May 18, 2008 adoring profile of Michelle Obama, written by Ms Kantor and Jeff Zeleny:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/18/us/politics/18michelle.html

The article on Mrs McCain, compared to their previous piece on Michelle Obama, merely underlines the obvious bias of the New York Times and their mixing of opinion into the main news pages. It should be stated that the NYT is not the only paper guilty of this. You see it in newspaper, after newspaper, after newspaper. It is up to us, the readers, to read between the lines and ask ourselves this simple question:

“Is this fact or opinion?” If it is opinion, why isn’t it in the editorial section?

It really makes one wonder if this is what is being taught in journalism schools.

I have my opinion.

I can’t see any justifiable ethic even remotely available to Kantor (or her publisher) to even begin to support Kantor using teenagers to worm information out of them.

Did Kantor’s publisher ask her when she submitted her first draft, whether or not she’d actually asked for the PARENTS of the teen/s she contacted? And speak to the PARENTS, to any ADULTS? If not, why didn’t she (ask for an adult).

The NYTimes has become nothing more than putrid mush. Kantor should be making sweetpotato pie somewhere instead of pretending to be “a journalist.”

No, wait, save the pie and all sweetpotatoes everywhere and keep Kantor away from both.

Will Saturday Night Live harass Kantor with a routine featuring Jack Black in a wig and doing the devil dance in the newsroom? I doubt it.

S on October 18, 2008 at 9:17 PM

I look forward to seeing Jodi greeting customers at Walmart in the not to distant future.

Dreadnought223 on October 18, 2008 at 9:37 AM

No, no, no, she’d scare attempting customers away. I’d turn around and run out of the store if I ever saw Kantor insulting people at what ought to be the “greeter” place.

Save Wal-Mart, keep Kantor awaaaay.

You know I reckon Ace has the right idea on how to deal with left wing media scum like Jodi Kantor.

http://minx.cc/?post=275889

Wellll, I’ve got some embarrassing stories for certain big chiefs and underlings in media that I could tell.

The PROBLEM with reporting on the lowest standards imaginable that few decent consumers might expect really do exist in the media, the PROBLEM with telling any of those stories is that the Left isn’t HARMED by any of them.

You could report, say, Publisher Dingus naked in his office entertaining a flock of flamingos with Elton John and no one (in the media, that means, among the Leftwing) would care.

You could report, say, any one of the scenarios Ace alludes to and the Leftwing would laugh: and they’d laugh because it wouldn’t be “bad” enough, or awful to them.

Which is WHY the Leftwing can harass other people, because other people have standards.

They can “call” for his resignation all they want, but they cannot make him resign, and they can’t remove him.

A change in the electoral college will require a constitutional amendment. Not likely to pass the various state legislations.

BacaDog on October 18, 2008 at 12:08 PM

Well, Hugo Chavez said last week (or so) that the U.S. needs a new Constitution. Perhaps that’s what Obama and the Progressive Communist Wing of the DNC have in mind.

NYT has sunk so low, it really is quite pathetic.

Terrye on October 19, 2008 at 10:37 AM

When is the Times going to find out how Obama got into Columbia?

Who paid for it?

What about Obama’s medical records?

What about Michelle’s hanging out with the Farrakhan’s?

How often is the Times going to pound on Cindy McCain?

drjohn on October 19, 2008 at 11:21 AM

NO – it’s “Jodi Kantor, HATEMONGER and BIGOT“!!!

WHY can’t you people get ANYTHING right?

grtflmark on October 19, 2008 at 1:13 PM

So when liberals attack conservatives, we can say it (for now), when Christians attack Jews or Muslims or Buddists, we shout it from the treetops, but when Jews attack Christians, we have to pretend not to notice. Kinda like how the FBI doesn’t notice when Muslims attack anyone? Is that where we are going?

Spartacus on October 19, 2008 at 3:30 PM

How about we find out where Jodi’s kids go to school and talk to the kids and their moms about Jodi. Why don’t go to the court house and look at her real estate records for liens, and peruse the civil records for any judgements. Hell, let’s talk to her neighbors, her old classmates, old boyfriends….

We could, but that would just be creepy.

BacaDog on October 19, 2008 at 3:50 PM

The NYT reduced to trolling for teens.

I’m sure the gambit went on in the same vein:

“… and does anybody have any, like, y’know, funny or embarrassing WTF cellphone clips of Cindy McCain, kinda AFV-ish with her face in a dumb expression …or kicking a small, annoying dog, or sumpin’? Keep it clean! (If you can!) Thanks, all~~~ ;)…”

No national security secrets to undermine, lately?

profitsbeard on October 19, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Trolling for dirt on Facebook among teenagers for hit pieces on a candidate’s spouse hits a new low. Does the National Enquirer even do that?

Probably not…until now. I’m sure they’re going to think it’s a good idea, though.

But a legitimate question on weather Michelle OBama has ever felt proud of her country before her ‘first time’ is still off limits right?

CrazyFool on October 19, 2008 at 11:34 PM

For those interested, here’s a piece from April 2007 by Kantor about Obama, Wright and Obama’s search for faith.

Is it me or does this unfortunate look like a rodent?

I don’t like her glasses.

That’s relevant, right?

saint kansas on October 20, 2008 at 9:36 AM

Remember when newspapers had news on the front page, and editorials in their own section in the back? Those were the days.

Vashta.Nerada on October 20, 2008 at 10:01 AM

…looking at the graphic attached to the thread, I’m grateful for one thing: when young Jodi was made a weasel, she was given a weasel’s face.

…it makes avoiding her easier, trusting her harder, and denouncing her more popular….

Puritan1648 on October 20, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Please, I beg you, remove her picture. Everytime I see it, I have an incredible urge to load up a mousetrap with a bit of cheese.

bloggless on October 20, 2008 at 12:09 PM

Point is, looks have nothing to do with it. Focus.

The Race Card on October 18, 2008 at 8:00 PM

How can you focus, when you are staring at a face like that? That poor women, she should have been aborted…
