Bachmann and Matthews tangle on anti-Americanism

posted at 7:41 am on October 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews last night and tangled over the recent emphasis on Barack Obama’s relationship with unrepentant domestic terrorist William Ayers. Matthews trapped Bachmann with a couple of reductio ad absurdum arguments, and somehow wound up asserting that an investigation to find anti-American Congressmen would be a good idea:

Michele’s a friend and I know her passion for her country, but she let herself get trapped by Matthews here. She did well until the last two minutes, but she let Matthews get away with characterizing her statements as equating liberal policy with anti-Americanism. That leads to the conclusion that half of Congress hates America, which is ridiculous, and led to the silly notion that someone should “look into” it.

We don’t need another House Un-American Activities Committee. Voters make those decisions. Mainstream liberal policy may be wrong-headed and ineffective, but it’s not anti-American. That’s not the point with William Ayers, unless Matthews suggests that Ayers represents mainstream liberal views — a suggestion that would rightly offend mainstream liberals. That’s how Rep. Bachmann should have answered Matthews.

Ayers is a pretty good example of anti-Americanism; he bombed the Pentagon and other places, and his group wound up killing people to score political points. He wants to destroy the private-property system and replace it with essentially a Soviet state. Jeremiah Wright preached “God Damn America,” about as anti-American a statement a preacher can make from the pulpit, and accused the government of creating AIDS as a genocidal tool against people of color. I’d call both anti-American, and not coincidentally, Barack Obama spent years of his life in politics with both people.

If Matthews objects to this coming out now, he can blame himself and his colleagues. Had they spent one-tenth the effort investigating Obama as they have in investigating Joe the Plumber, Obama’s evasions on Ayers would have been widely known months ago. Matthews was too busy feeling tingles up his leg, which is all anyone needs to know about Matthews’ credibility on anything connected with Obama.

Half of congress DOES hate America of they wouldn’t support the terrorists foreign and domestic, nor would they continually attempt to turn the US into France.

This kind of thinking is exactly why the GOP is losing; people are sick and tired of the us-and-them BS.

Nor do I dedalus. I’m talking from my own experience with general elections, having worked with grassroots organizations (GOP) for the past 30 years. Democrats must meet the percentages on all three groups I’ve listed, or they lose. The Liberal Media is working overtime in an effort to “shape the news” to discourage the Republican base, hoping that they can peel off some voters who will say “what the heck, this things over, I’m staying home.” The polling firms are all Liberal minded, and if you look at the chemistry of these polls, they are tainted big time. It also doesn’t help when sites such as Hot Air, decide to give a CBS/NYT poll space as if it’s not tainted heavily towards Obama and the Democrat Party.

One things for sure, Obama and the DNC are very aware this election is not only up for grabs, they know they are in trouble.

Chris Matthews has that tingle in his legs again. He is disgusting. A true pin head.

You are right about CA. We live on the Central Coast. Our home value is down like mad. We got a great deal when we bought it. Now looks like we have to sell it at a insulting price. We are fixing it up and going to sell it. We are through with Ca. To many Liberal’s that are among us. It is getting pathetic. CA has gone down since Arnold took office.

Lived there for my entire adult life sheebe. I moved my family to Montana a few years ago. I couldn’t allow my boys (young men now) to get stuck in California. Don’t look at Arnold only sheebe; Pelosi and Boxer are both radical Liberals, and have built a coalition of radicals that have run that state since Reagan left to become President.

I owned a business in Ca. for 25 years. I watched first hand, as Liberals turned Ca. from a business friendly state, to a state that viewed business owners as “bad guys” that rip-off the employee at every turn and must be punished. Huge industries once thrived in Ca., including the defense industry, silicon valley, insurance giants, ship builders….

Look at the picture now; they are all gone! Happened before Arnold took over. DC is broke and needs fixin… Sacramento is broke and needs fixin…

Keemo on October 18, 2008 at 2:17 PM

BTW: I’m not saying Arnold isn’t a puke phony POS dumb ass; he is!

Why is it being “pushed out” with two weeks to go, Chrissy?

Are You Serious?

Well, the hanging curve ball, fecal joke that you’ve thrown for us to hit into the cheap seats notwithstanding, here are a couple of reasons why it’s important.

It’s important because you soulless bastards in the MSM have had two years to do your “Goddamn America” job, and you haven’t! Yet you know every detail of Joe The Plumber’s life backwards and forwards, in less than a week.

And it’s important because you get a thrill up your leg when you hear “The One” deliver a speech, and Keith Olbermann, Of All People!, is the one that needs to calm you with, “Steady”.

THAT’S Why It’s Important, you ****job hack!

Bachman’s not too bright and she stumbled badly when off the talking points provided to her. She really stepped in it, and you’re being pretty intellectually lazy and dishonest in your post Ed.

Ed, are you sure you don’t mean “and Bachmann somehow wound up asserting that an investigation to find anti-American Congressmen”? Currently, the sentence parses as Matthews making the assertion.

Apparently this appearance has raised over $100k for her opponent in the past 24 hours.

She was only up 4 in the last poll. And this should be a reliably Republican district.

Next year she might have a little more free time to go chase down all those un-American congressmen.

She was very careful not to say there were un American congressmen. She tried to stick to the topic of Obama and Ayers (the subject of the RNC call) and other questionable Obama associations. It was Matthews who did the implying.

Stephanie Turdcutter is an Obama “senior advisor.” How much more poor judgement do we need to see?

Western_Civ on October 18, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Rep. Bachman did lose control of the dialog toward the end, but she raises some solid points throughout.

Does “half the Congress” hate America? No. Do a substantial portion of them? I would argue Yes, and their voting records back it up. Rep. “Baghdad Jim” McDermott is a flaming anti-American idiot. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is dedicated to “saving the planet” and considers her country – the one for which she’s third in line for the presidency – the chief obstacle to saving it. Every congressman and Senator who violates the law, and then hides behind his/her privilege as a member of the ruling class, shows contempt for the Rule of Law without which this nation cannot survive. “Default Laura” Richardson probably contributed to a major bank failure all on her own. Frank, Dodd, Obama sold out the US economy for a few perks. Harry Reid the majority leader is nothing like Brother Harry Reid the Nevada “pro-life Mormon Democrat” he portrays himself to be, and his efforts to lose us the war in Iraq (and by extension the larger war against terror and Islamic extremism) by word AND deed is arguably treasonous.

I’m not saying we should throw them against the wall and offer them one last cigarette. But those whose agendas are at flagrant odds with the Constitution, and frequently their constituents, should be outed.

If the voters care about such things, they’ll be tossed out in their next reelection effort. If enough of them don’t, then this country is on the fast track to ruin.

Your comment on the spectrum has validity, especially as it describes the irreconcilable differences between the deep blues and the deep reds.

I see the differences as between those who value the collective (blues) above all and the individual (reds). Valuing the collective over the individual by definition means that there must be a loss of liberties.

Oh well, if people are smart enough, and the PRCalif falls into the ocean, maybe they will be voted out. But, as long as so many are on the dole or looking forward to it, fat chance.

Ed, what kind of alternate universe are you dwelling in?

Michelle never stated that there should be a Congressional investigation on the “Americanism” of members of Congress. NEVER

She did suggest that this MIGHT be an interesting thing for the media to investigate. BIG DIFFERENCE

So, your conjuring up “need another House Un-American Activities Committee” is completely BOGUS

Captain America on October 18, 2008 at 11:19 PM

Ed, what kind of alternate universe are you dwelling in?

It’s the universe of defeatism.

Understand the real agenda behind Hotair. Basically, they are schizophrenic. On the one hand, they really do want Hussein defeated. But on the other hand, they hate McCain. So they bounce back and forth between supporting him and undercutting him. They also hate the GOP right now, and so want to see it lose as well.

The funny part is how they are cutting their own throat. If they accomplish the aim, the resultant legal steps by Obamessiah will shut this site down.

This press “secretary”, Chrissy “The Thrill” Matthews is so far in the Obama tank, he can’t see anything but his hind end…..

She should have told this messiah hack that any regular American looking for a Federal job could not get the clearance if there was an association with a suspected terrorist, let alone a known killer and terrorist. And the messiah wants to be President?

And I really, really hate that smug condesending look on the Obama press secretaries face….I am not a violent man, but there are some faces that you just want to whack. And the leg thriller is one of them……
