WSJ: Fear the coming liberal revolution

What will a Barack Obama presidency mean?  It will almost certainly give Democrats an undivided government, their first since 1993.  In that period, Democrats tried nationalizing the health-care industry — and that was under the direction of a DLC-sponsored moderate President.  Under Barack Obama, the Wall Street Journal predicts a return to 1965 … or 1933:

If the current polls hold, Barack Obama will win the White House on November 4 and Democrats will consolidate their Congressional majorities, probably with a filibuster-proof Senate or very close to it. Without the ability to filibuster, the Senate would become like the House, able to pass whatever the majority wants.

Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven’t since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s. If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on.

Some will say that the Democrats deserve a shot at undivided government again, since the Republicans had four years of control over both chambers of Congress and the White House in the Bush years.  (Democrats controlled the Senate from 2001-2, thanks to Jumping Jim Jeffords.)  Many Republicans, myself included, would gladly agree that the GOP didn’t use its opportunity to change the governing philosophy in Washington, but merely adopted its worst power-hoarding practices.  That lost opportunity doesn’t mean the Democrats would make the same mistake.

Read the entire WSJ editorial.  They note that in 1933 and 1965, liberal Democrats fundamentally abused the nature of government and its relationship to the economy in ways we still have not corrected.  What changes can we expect in an Obama administration?

  • Nationalized health care
  • Union supremacy and a boost of cash to the Democratic Party
  • Massive tax increases and redistributionism
  • Curtailed free-speech protections

It’s not a pretty picture.

uh Persia (Iran) let the jews return to the land…they didn’t attack them…try reading the bible for once.

right4life on October 17, 2008 at 4:13 PM

A Camaro? I’d be a Viper. Those are fun. For my husband’s 25th I rented him one. We drove in it so long with the top down that I got a seat belt sunburn line.

Esthier on October 17, 2008 at 4:06 PM

That’s like the time when I burned the back of my hands driving a topless Jeep.

I won’t speak for the Iranians, right4life, because I haven’t studied their culture nearly as much (nor mingled with them), but overall the Russians are very good people. They are not my enemies, and while I know Putin is a dangerous man, he’s no Stalin.

And there I go, not listening to my own advice. Must be the meds. : ) And more on topic, I just asked my husband for a gun for my upcoming birthday. Call it a visceral nagging, but I’m honestly worried about what may come to pass if Obama does win. I hate to sound like a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but I’ve studied enough history to think something is off here. I only wonder how many others back then felt paranoid too, only to shrug it off and then pay later.

Democrats will do what all Democrat politicians do and what all Democrat politicians have done historically.

Lie, cheat, murder and steal.

Democrat politicians are all worthless scum and anyone who votes for them willingly is a complete idiot.

So, you are welcome to your faith, but do not disparage works.

unclesmrgol on October 17, 2008 at 4:13 PM

its simple if your salvation is by works, then God owes you salvation, its not a gift, and Jesus didn’t have to die.

Romans 4:4
Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation.

good works are fine, but don’t think you can earn forgivenss of your sins by anything you do.

but salvation is a free gift of God, through Christ.

I don’t think we should worry. If every republican would stand together and speak out against their “fairness”, we could clog the courtrooms so no other business gets done. Doesn’t sound so bad to me. Let anarchy reign if they so want it. (my God, am I now a Libertarian?)

Ah… no wonder you’re being so generous.

I had some good ones after I had a root canal (all my fault, I admit). I kept taking them for a little while even when the pain was fading, because I was waitress at the time and it really helped me not yell at them and ruin my tips.

I wasn’t as good at my job when on them, but I found that it didn’t matter. I actually got worse tips when I was perfect, because then I was nearly invisible to them.

Esthier on October 17, 2008 at 4:45 PM

right4life-

Really interesting discussion you’ve spawned.

My first, snarky response is: It’s “Ezekiel” not “Ezekial” — this should be easy to remember because “El” is one of the words for “God,” so all the Biblical names referring to God like Immanuel (God is With Us) and Ezekiel (Strength of God) end in “-el.”

Next, I had to go back and remind myself that Iran did not take part, at all, in the 1967 and 1973 wars in Israel. That was surprising, and saddening. Hard to remember that pre-Carter, Iran was relatively secular, well on the way to modernization, and an American ally. It’s a sad, sad omen of what might happen under Obama — could Iraq go that way?

Finally, the prophecy is eerily similar to the current state of the Middle East. I have no doubt that Iran could convince Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and several other countries to join with it in attacking Israel. And I have no doubt that if a nuclear-armed Iran did attack Israel, there would be a nuclear war — and the imagery of the end of Ezekiel 38 does capture quite a bit of that.

One total wild card in the mix — Iraq. No way Iraq lets Iran march its army through. No idea how that plays out. Maybe Iran doesn’t send troops at all, but just nukes and its proxy-soldiers like Hezbollah and Hamas…

ClintACK on October 17, 2008 at 4:45 PM

My (Marine) instructer in C school said I was pretty decent with the 9mil Berreta – I need something small (I have small hands), but not a cap pistol either. I was actually surprised that my husband took me seriously – we have young kids. But I do agree with getting an instructor, and with all the military around me, it shouldn’t be that hard.

Why wouldn’t Iraq cooperate? Its the only other state in the region that is a Shiite theocracy with a sharia Constitution. As soon as the US pulls out Iraq will probably ally with Iran. Their US-trained army will be the second best in the region and able to take on the Israelis.

Let’s not look at this statically. I expect a major repudiation of everything Obama in the 2010 election.

thuja on October 17, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Good luck with that. Like in many other states, here in NC, the democrats have been in power for a century. They promise to fix the same things every election cycle, obviously they don’t or they would not have to promise it again. And they keep getting re-elected.
The democrats will be able to blame the disaster they create on Bush, the evil corporations, etc. Of course the media will try to convince us that we are living in the best times in our history thank you to the messiah.

neuquenguy on October 17, 2008 at 5:09 PM

I’ve been trying to point this out to Libs for months now, and the sad truth is, they could care less. They are either too stupid or too lazy to connect the dots past “electing a cool black guy that will make the rest of the world love us again” Snort. Makes me always want to ask them how much time they’ve ever spent in foreign countries, because they are NEVER going to like us- ever. They like our money, but thats about it, and since none of us will have any extra money- it’s a wash.

I don’t like to sound creepy, but the raw anger that will swell against Pelosi and Reid in an all Dem Gov’t. would make me a little nervous if I were them…

anniekc on October 17, 2008 at 5:09 PM

A President Obama doesn’t need two years to do damage. With a stroke of a pen, he could issue a number of Executive Orders (perhaps enforcing his vision of a “fair” economy), nationalize industries or banks in the guise of creating economic stability, or impose martial law, should a government-induced meltdown lead to food or fuel shortages.

Obama has recruited his supporters as brown-shirted henchmen or Stasi, as another poster dubbed them, and his honeymoon with the media allows him to be Chief Propagandizer.

The Great Society began the trend toward a never-ending period of reparations. An Obama redistribution of the “pie” will destroy jobs, incentive, and investment. The “reparations” in the name of economic justice will escalate until all are trapped into government dependence. The system will collapse under the weight of the demands of too many takers.

George Soros is shorting the dollar. Under Obama, the dollar will become even more valueless.

We’re doomed. The moronic electorate has cast us unto the abyss. Get your passports . . . within a year anything will be better than this place.

rplat on October 17, 2008 at 5:16 PM

What will a Barack Obama presidency mean? Well, when the strongest nation in the world cannot win a war against the 3rd world Banana Republic like Iraq. When the richest nation in the world cannot control and manage it’s own budget and spending policies. When the most technologically advanced nation in history cannot invent a way to cure our addiction to oil — our destructive, suicidal, addiction to oil. When the greatest nation in the world and most moral nation in the world now spreads immorality and evil through movies and music and Hollywood all over the world. When the nation that once represented HOPE now represents despair, moral despair, and moral decadence everywhere in the world, and setting up a white-flag of surrender to all the evil people of the world — to the muslims and all the evil people of the world. When that has happened, that means it’s time for completey new leadership for America. Completely new leadership! Because the current leadership we have in both political parties has failed us. I love the American people, I mean really really love them, but a Barack Obama presidency will mean further destruction of this country, that’s what it’ll mean.

apacalyps on October 17, 2008 at 5:19 PM

I don’t know why this is not the theme of every congressional and senate campaign. We have arguably the most unpopular congress in history and now we are going to give them unfettered power with a democrat in the White House.
This fact along with the mag shots of the gang of 3 has to scare the diaper filling out of most Americans.

Domestically, we are lead to believe that there is strong sentiment for change, but little substance or even context for what that means. If Roubini is correct and we are facing a major recession, there will be a great deal of pain to come.
Roubini predicts worst recession in 40 Years.

Moreover, in recent days among EU newspapers and the WSJ, there is increasing talk among Gordon Brown, Sarkozy and others to create more global oversight over financial institutions.

This should give one pause. With a left agenda and super majority we are likely to see a hard turn to the left in support of more international oversight and regulation over our markets, including finance, and carbon cap and trade (tax).

For 8 years we have heard that we need to cooperate more with the world so we can be liked again and regain much sought after respect (code for ceding our money, sovereignty and interest to others).

This political climate is ripe for radical transformations of our society and for the first time in a generation, the left will have the political muscle to impose their will.

It is enough to cause one to shudder.

2nd lawsuit challenges Obama’s citizenship
Man demands state verify birth records or remove senator from ballots

Note: It is incumbent on ALL Secretaries of State in all of the United States to BOTH accurately verify Voters AND candidates. Barack Hussein Obama has sealed his “Hawaiian” birth records and also records in Kenya.

Failure to verify and certify qualification for ALL candidates in a general election by any Secretary of State may be a cause of action (dereliction of duty) and criminal charges may be filed.

Uh, I rely on my seminary education to interpret the Bible within the tradition handed down by the Fathers, not by the Scofield reference notes. Call it whatever dispy cuss words you want to. What’s new ain’t true, and what’s true ain’t new. Dispensationalism is new.

Akzed on October 17, 2008 at 3:32 PM

While I have never studied at a seminary, I do have some questions about the verses cited in Ezekiel 38:

If Ezekiel 38 refers to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD…

1) What other armies were there other than Roman? (see Eze 38:15)
2) During the siege of Jerusalem, were there “mountains overturned, the cliffs … crumble”? (Eze 38:20)
3) Did the Lord punish the Romans by “executing judgment upon [Rome] with plague and bloodshed…pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur” on their troops? (Eze 38:22)
4) In the end, did they know that they faced the wrath and might of the living God? (Eze 38:23)

…while I believe some prophesies (such as Jesus proclamation in Luke 21) were about the events in 70AD, I don’t think the prophesies in Ezekiel 38 fit that event.

Also, since you claim to have studied at a seminary (which I must assume to be truthful), I find the tone of your writings distressing as a Christian. Jesus Christ had many words for those who thought themselves theologically above others… and they were not kind.

It is scary. I’ve never heard a Treasury Secretary warn about being “500 trades form Armageddon” before, to then turn and demand more than 5% of our GDP to do something that he hadn’t even figured out – proof is seen in the reason for pushing that legislation has been since thrown aside by Treasury (the outright purchase of MBS toxic cr#p).

People don’t understand what monetary collapse means and the implications on society. It is not anything that we have really seen before, certainly not for the reserve currency of the world. Other monetary collapses had strong currencies left to lean on. When the backbone currency of the world falls …

I’m not saying that this will happen, though I believe BHO’s anti-growth and confiscatory policies will assure it, but that it is a real possibility in any event.

Meanwhile, all the legislation that caused this problem, and all the people that backed it and pushed it, are still in place. … to be pushed even further with the Gang of 3 in charge.

Agreed! And let’s not forget Obama’s Global Poverty Initiative that promises a huge portion of the GNP to alleviate wealth iniquities of distribution and provide education (I’ll bet, just along the lines of the CAC).

Much of this funding is intended for Africa, and we cannot forget that Obama’s church is Afrocentric, as is Obama’s international focus. The GPI is UN-fostered just as are the AGW initiatives.

Obama will impoverish us into a third-world economy in the interest of fairness.

If Obama wins, with big Democrat majorities, the world will finally discover what happens when the economic rock propping up European socialism collapses. It should be interesting, provided the rolling blackouts haven’t knocked out your TV and you can watch it.

Socialism has always made its first priority the elimination of escape routes, because the people yoked to the socialist engine will flee if they can. America was the escape route for the rest of the world, until now.

I won’t speak for the Iranians, right4life, because I haven’t studied their culture nearly as much (nor mingled with them), but overall the Russians are very good people. They are not my enemies, and while I know Putin is a dangerous man, he’s no Stalin.

AZ_Redneck on October 17, 2008 at 7:23 PM

I see your point, but really, what’s going to stop them? Consider a filibuster-proof Democrat majority applauding Dear Leader with tears in their eyes. Within a few months of the inauguration, the alternative media will be Fairness Doctrined out of existence.

The smart operators in the Democrat party will move fast, seizing those first few months to act against a demoralized GOP that will be busy finger-pointing and score-settling, with opportunists following the Christopher Buckley path of comfortable servitude. Eventually an organized opposition will gain strength, but it would probably take the better part of 2009. Fast-moving socialists with a media amen chorus can get a LOT done in that amount of time.

And there’s nothing so permanent as a temporary government program. Everything Obama puts in place will be eternal, with a loud constituency ready to fight to the death for their slice of Senator Government’s pie. We couldn’t even shut down the National Endowment for the Arts, at the height of the Gingrich Era. Once we get national health care, or Obama’s “massive domestic volunteer force with as much funding as the military” dumped in our laps, they will NEVER go away… not until the ultimate Great Crash of the entire creaky system.

November is the final battle for the old America. If we lose, a new one will arise someday, but its birth might be even more painful that ours was in 1776.

That’s where monetary collapse comes into the equation. In a strong US we could weather the gang of 3, but given the incredibly weak state of our monetary system, it’s a totally different story.

Walter Williams is the kinda American that if Texas seceded from the union (or OK or a bunch of Red states), he and his family would get FREE citizenship and an invite to be the their first Secretary of Commerce/Treasury or chief economic advisor role for the new Republic.

Flower of humanity.

If you are a right-wing blogger and Obama takes over, I’d be afraid — very — very — afraid. Your new president, who set up an internet ‘war room’ to fight slurs in cyberspace, will not tolerate your dissent.

“Once a community organizer, then a foundation grant-maker, and now a lobbyist for direct government funding, Barack Obama has been with Acorn throughout his career,” Fund writes. “In return, Acorn is pledging to spend $35 million this year registering voters—both real and fictive. Should Obama become president, look for Acorn to have a vastly more ambitious legislative agenda, and for Obama to be responsive.” Acorn, in other words, has a lot riding on Tony Romo voting early, often, and everywhere.

Don’t you wonder why the lefties have not uttered one word of protest over the Bushies taking over the banking and mortgage industries? This from the people who agonize over the possibility of the Bushies listening in to terrorist phone calls to prevent attacks?

Reid and Pelosi and their gangstas see this as the path to complete power over the economy and all the “greedy” Americans who have escaped them so far.

The WSJ is correct to ring the warning bell alerting all to a possible democrat super majority. They should be just as quick to sound the clarion call for action against such a calamity, a calamity for us and our children’s children. Fretting and hand wringing between now and November 4th about the “inevitable” will only allow the U.S. to be governed by a Marxist and his eager to please lieutenants, Reid and Pelosi, come January 21st.

Since BHO is using his illegal campaign contributions and broken promises to outspend John McCain 3 to 1, sometimes 4 to 1, on advertisements we, the people, need to do our part by forwarding emails of McCain and RNC ads to our friends and acquaintances in order to get the message out. Make those videos VIRAL. Put up signs. Contact your elected officials to enlist their help (or to keep them in line when it comes to following the law). Compare the two candidates to whoever will listen. Volunteer where possible. Drive neighbors to the polls. Encourage early voting, if allowed, so people won’t be discouraged from voting if they think they will have to stand in long lines on the 4th. DO something to help.

Don’t be like the hand wringers and the elite, Palin isn’t good enough for us crowd– Fred Barnes, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Peggy Noonan, baby Buckley, Brooks, Frum, et al.

Having a MARXIST as a President of the United States will be a stain upon this country that will be hard to wash away.
America will become just another country and not “that shining beacon on the hill”.

Evil only prospers when good men do nothing.

Gohawgs on October 18, 2008 at 2:10 AM

Gohawgs,
I had written to Michelle, Allah and Ed and asked if we could set up an ongoing open thread where we could post our letters for other HotAir posters to copy, paste and email or post elsewhere. This would serve as a “quick-response” approach to try to counter Obama’s machine in these last most important days. But like the dozen other times I’ve written to them, I’ve heard nothing back. Do you think that my idea would work hand-in-hand with yours?

NightmareOnKStreet on October 18, 2008 at 2:24 AM

NightmareOnKStreet on October 18, 2008 at 2:24 AM

YES, I think that such a approach would work well — especially if some of the more eloquent members of HA were to chime in. There are some very good thinkers and writers here. I just copied my rant into an email and sent it out to 12 people in my email address book imploring them to join in and pass it along to others.

I fear that MM, AP and Ed aren’t interested in organizing what you suggest. So, it will be up to those of us who read HotAir and MM’s site to copy and paste the best of what we read on to others for them to share — stories, videos, and individual’s responses.

Sometimes I’m surprised by what MM, AP,and Ed AREN’T interested in pursuing. I’ve commented on Ed’s story of a few days ago concerning BHO ‘certificate of live birth’. Ed was pooh poohing the whole Berg story and lawsuit. I pointed out that a C.O.L.B. is not the same as a birth certificate and that the whole lawsuit would go away if BHO produced the documents in question. Today, I sent a tip about a story to MM concerning a black preacher in Little Rock preaching against voting for BHO due to BHO’s stands on abortion and same sex marriage.

Anyway, sitting on our hands will not get John McCain elected it will only result in a Marxist being foisted upon us by a corrupt democratic party.
