The obligatory “Colin Powell probably going to endorse Obama on Sunday” post
posted at 7:00 pm on October 17, 2008 by Allahpundit
No word officially, but would an Obama shill like Andrea Mitchell be touting it this heavily if she thought a Maverick moment was in the works?
Hotline‘s predictably jacked, too:
If Powell, retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, does endorse, he blesses Obama as a capable leader who is able to manage critical national security and foreign policy matters. Though his push for the Iraq war somewhat tarnished his stellar reputation as a respected military man, Powell, who served three Republican presidents, remains popular. His support for Obama could sway moderates, males, in particular, and working class whites who might be buying into the GOP’s line that Obama isn’t patriotic or American enough.
After four months of non-suspense about his intentions, it’s a relief to know we won’t have to suffer the tedium of this idiocy much longer. Needless to say, with The One on the brink of victory and the ascendant left ready to absolve him of his Bush credentials, Powell has zero incentive to throw in with McCain now. Although it would have been sporting of him not to choose such a high profile venue to break the news so that it’s not airing on a cable loop all day Sunday, which it will be. Exit quotation: “It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain. It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.”

Mitchell goes out of her way to create narratives, like the repeated ‘Hillary Clinton is dropping out tomorrow’ breathlessly reported by Andrea Mitchell.
Yeah, he’ll probably endorse, but he may not. And frankly what difference will it make now?
Spirit of 1776 on October 17, 2008 at 7:03 PM
Colin Powell’s an incredibly overrated mediocrity who, in a career capping move, totally screwed up the 1st Iraq war.
He can go to hell as far as I’m concerned…

Does the typical Obama voter even know who he is??? I’m guessing they don’t.

Please. After Condi Rice gave Obama her seal of approval, is there anybody left out there who’s dumb enough not to understand that this is mainly about race, and not qualifications for the office?
If there is anybody that dumb, they’re undoubtedly an Obama voter already.

After four years of Condi, I wonder how many voters would be saying, “Colin who?”

Powell was, and still is, an American Hero. Just because he makes a political decision you disagree with does not change that.

If the left thinks Colin Powell lied to sell us on the Iraq War why is Colin Powell trying to sell us on Obama worth a damn to anybody?

Haunchie on October 17, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Actually, there are quite a few GOPers who didn’t like him much before the election or while he was in office.
amerpundit on October 17, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Yeah right, it will sway the news cycle and sway some votes….
Supposedly, Powell hasn’t 1) talked to McCain in a long time 2) doesn’t like the neocons around McCain 3) didn’t like how McCain surrogates put his name in the running as vp back in August 4) didn’t like that “We are all Georgians” crap… 5) was still looking in August for something from either of the candidates that would make him for for them
Powell has 1) donated to McCain last year 2) son works for Team McCain 3) so does Armitage and many other “realists”
Let’s just see what happens… seriously, if McCain really wanted Powell’s endorsement then he’s done almost everything possible to get it rejected… so maybe it’s in the bag? doubtful…
ninjapirate on October 17, 2008 at 7:12 PM
As a fellow veteran I can tell you with absolute certainty that a lot of veterans and current military personnel will see a Powell endorsment of Obama as a MAJOR betrayal. An attack by Al Qaeda, while horrific, is something America will recover from. Handing our nation over to the enemy here at home, a Socialist Obama, is not something our nation will ever fully recover from. America isn’t just a place on a map. There are certain ideas and philosophies that make us what we are. The name of our country will not change, but America will cease to exist if Obama is elected. We will have willingly put a man in charge who opposes everything America is supposed to stand for. This would be like the Vatican making a Catholic-hater the next Pope.
davenp35 on October 17, 2008 at 7:13 PM
General Powell lost my respect when he left Scooter to twist in the wind during the Wilson/Plame affair. All due to a snit about Washington insider politics…
On a positive note, we all learned how relentless Fitzgerald can be when he’s got his teeth into something meaty. And right now he’s snacking in the windy city. Hopefully he can finish up his meal in time to save us from The One.
What a Merry Fitzmas that would be!

Colin Powell endorse Obama? I guess Powell wants to make race a major issue. Do his principles matter? Major liberal newspapers have been endorsing Obama? Surprise, surprise. But they’ve been in the tank for Obama all along. Too bad the liberal newspapers have not been successful at convincing the large majority of voters that Obama should be elected. Instead Obama has spent millions upon millions with no result at all.
Obama spoke in Germany to thousands, but did anyone mention that most of his German audience did not speak English? I guess Obama just doesn’t matter.
There are now two lawsuits to force Obama to divulge the records of his birth; his qualifications to even run for president. And, whereas this didn’t matter during the primary elections (the Constitution is relevant only concerning the general election), it does now.
2nd lawsuit challenges Obama’s citizenship
Man demands state verify birth records or remove senator from ballots
Note: It is incumbent upon ALL Secretaries of State in all of the United States to BOTH accurately verify Voters AND candidates. Barack Hussein Obama has sealed his “Hawaiian” birth records and also records in Kenya.
Failure to verify and certify qualification for ALL candidates in a general election by any Secretary of State may be a cause of action (dereliction of duty) and criminal charges may be filed.

Powell’s contributions — as opposed to participation — in the first Iraq war are highly overrated. He was a political general who in no way had the guts or vision of a Schwarzkopf or Petraeus.
And of course he was the “post-racial” choice for SecState, a job he performed with no distinction in what history will decide was a hugely lackluster White House, foreign policy-wise.
To see him among the “95%” is no surprise. It’s right in there with learning the NY Times will kiss the hem of Osama Obama’s robe this weekend, and the perfect cap to a lifelong record as a sellout.
MrScribbler on October 17, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Coke or Pepsi is a disagreement. Whether we should make America a Socialist nation or not isn’t. The willful destruction of our nation, and all efforts to aid in this, are treasonous!

This means nothing. Weinberger and Reagan mentored Powell but he never really fit in with the conservative Republican crowd. He’s always been a closet liberal and now he can leave the closet.

I lost all respect for Powell during the first Gulf War. His later tenure at State only made me think that he was one of the dumbest people in government.
Powell has never made one decent decision – not publicly. I trust he is just as stupid in private. And his “Powell Doctrine” is a total joke. The real “Powell Doctrine” is that people aren’t allowed to be killed in war.
But, many think that BHO has a first-class intellect, so I guess they think Powell is a powerful thinker, too. LOL.

His entire career has been with the blessing and help of Republicans.
Loyalty? What is that?
But to be truthful, Powell is very overrated.
You wonder why people like him even give an endorsement – how many more votes would either candidate pick up because of him? Did Bush get more black voters because of Powell as Sec of State?

Colin Powell, didn’t he involve himself with the cultic International Churches of Christ’s HOPE campaign for widespread immunization of children back in the day? A laudible goal, but HOPE was a huckster organization lining the pockets of its own, another example of Colin’s well intentioned, but poor judgement.
exdeadhead on October 17, 2008 at 7:21 PM
Colin Powell became a traitor to all that made him compelling and respectable when he kept his mouth shut and allowed the Bush Administration take the heat for one of his underlings over the Plame affair. If he had spoken up then, his endorsement would mean something now. As it is, his endorsement of Obama carries all the weight of The Pennysaver’s much anticipated editorial.

Powell was a good soldier just like all of my old comrades in arms. The difference was that he managed to accumulate a lot of powerful mentors. Now, if he elects to join himself with this gaggle of leftists and liberals then he deserves whatever criticism comes his way.

I was skeptical that this would happen the last time around. I’m skeptical again.
The last prediction was a complete fantasy based on absolutely no information. The lack of supporting data was obvious then as it is obvious now. It may happen but it’s just a wild guess at this point.
If this does not come to pass, the pontiffs who were wrong twice should be called out on it the next time they make a prediction.
Pythagoras on October 17, 2008 at 7:25 PM
If he actually does come out in Obama, I’ll be sad and disappointed. I’ll see it simply as a man trying to save his reputation, and staving off the future criminal charges against him from the liberals investigating all of Bush’s Administration.

Good lord, I really don’t get all the Powell haters… if McCain didn’t win Powell’s endorsement then it’s probably his fault… he hasn’t even acted like he wanted it…
ninjapirate on October 17, 2008 at 7:25 PM
I give him some credit for his time as CJCS for being the one who told Clinton that lifting the ban on gays openly serving would result in Clinton (already at odds with the military) having to deal with the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff tendering their resignation- in essence a huge vote of no confidence when Clinton needed to build credibility.
Powell was a dismal failure as SECSTATE- refusing to travel overseas (as if that wasn’t implied in the job description).
highhopes on October 17, 2008 at 7:25 PM
I would be embarrassed for Colin Powell, a former Secretary of State and General of the Army, if he were to endorse an empty suit MARXIST for President of the United States. And if Colin Powell were to do so based on race, it would be another repudiation of the race related gains Americans have made with the Republican party’s support.

It will be a cleansing purge from the conservative roasters. We can start fresh without them, and know who our true friends in the party are, and just who we can, and can’t trust.

And by the way, since we are operating on a new standard, does Colin Powell have a plumbers license?

I had so much respect for both Condi and Collin until they became Sec. of States. They both ate from the same Tree of Knowledge and the results have been disastrous.
How do you go from have a conservative philosophy and work in Republican Administrations and talk constantly about how bad liberal policies are for America? Worse yet, Condi’s expertise with Soviet style communism and her distaste for it and the very thing she’s worked against all her life she now supports wholeheartedly? Collin as well? Because Obama is not just Liberal, he’s Marxist.
The politics of ethnic identity. So very, very sad.
I can come up with only a handful of positive aspects about this election: 1. Soft Centrist Conservative has played itself out and lost. 2. People are going to truly understand what it is to live in a European Socialist type society and it won’t be pretty. 3. Political correctness, gender identity, and ethnic identity will be diminished. Once they’ve been elected you can’t say we don’t pay attention to them anymore. 4. That will leave politics to what it should be based on, political ideology and philosophy, i.e. reasoning over emotions.
Sultry Beauty on October 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Agreed. And wasn’t Powell’s assistant Richard Armitage the moron that could have kept the media from crucifying Scooter Libby? Powell can claim he never knew a thing, but that wouldn’t say much for his control of his duties.
Powell could have taken the high road on the WMD issue, but instead threw Bush under the bus to protect his precious reputation. Let him “pal around” with Barack, Ayers, Rezko, Wright, and Farrakan—-who gives a rats ass.

My only hope is that once black people can say that there has been a black president, they can finally admit to themselves that the nation’s racism has changed long before their fears of white people have. I just hope it isn’t Obama as the first black president.

Colin Powell…who the hell cares?
Secondly, I think it will incredibly be the ultimate betrayal of someone Colin calls his best friend. Shows you how much of a jerk Powell is.
Thirdly, why would Obama want an endorsement from a guy that the left blames for the war in Iraq? Doesn’t he represent what the left calls the “failure in Iraq?”

Reagan’s biggest mistake in my opinion was to choose GHWB to be his vice president. It is possible he had to to get the Rocky Rupubs to vote for him, but I don’t think so.
Second biggest mistake was believing congress would protect the border after giving amnesty to the Illegals.

Roger Waters on October 17, 2008 at 8:10 PM
Colin Powell is pro-abortion, not averse to affirmative action, and like most non-conservative African Americans has a soft spot for black victimization. He’s a military conservative but on the social and fiscal fronts is probably a kindred soul of the left.
Powell’s recommendation will not be an example of overwhelming force. Conservatives have long since cooled to him (his recommendation of McCain would have been meaningless) and Liberals hate the military. He will be feted, the way Noonan and other Conservative elites will be, until November 5. At which point they will be quickly forgotten.
Colin Powell is an American hero. In the world of Obama he is “nuanced”; in the real world he is somewhat one dimensional.
Seems like a nice man, though.
EMD on October 17, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Lets tell the plain truth here and everone knows it the only reason Powell would come out for Obama is because he is half black no more no less. That is the reason and it is a shame.
