The obligatory “Colin Powell probably going to endorse Obama on Sunday” post

posted at 7:00 pm on October 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

No word officially, but would an Obama shill like Andrea Mitchell be touting it this heavily if she thought a Maverick moment was in the works?

Hotline‘s predictably jacked, too:

If Powell, retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, does endorse, he blesses Obama as a capable leader who is able to manage critical national security and foreign policy matters. Though his push for the Iraq war somewhat tarnished his stellar reputation as a respected military man, Powell, who served three Republican presidents, remains popular. His support for Obama could sway moderates, males, in particular, and working class whites who might be buying into the GOP’s line that Obama isn’t patriotic or American enough.

After four months of non-suspense about his intentions, it’s a relief to know we won’t have to suffer the tedium of this idiocy much longer. Needless to say, with The One on the brink of victory and the ascendant left ready to absolve him of his Bush credentials, Powell has zero incentive to throw in with McCain now. Although it would have been sporting of him not to choose such a high profile venue to break the news so that it’s not airing on a cable loop all day Sunday, which it will be. Exit quotation: “It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain. It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.”

This just in! Raila Odinga, another african but non-american Military leader Endorses Barack Hussein Obama!!!!!!

Endorsement to be broadcast on MSM when hell freezes over!

jp on October 17, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Not a military leader, but the PM of Kenya.

baldilocks on October 18, 2008 at 7:08 PM

Worse yet, Condi’s expertise with Soviet style communism and her distaste for it and the very thing she’s worked against all her life she now supports wholeheartedly? Collin as well? Because Obama is not just Liberal, he’s Marxist.

Sultry Beauty on October 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Condoleezza Rice has not endorsed Barack Obama.

baldilocks on October 18, 2008 at 7:09 PM

If Powell does give BO an endorsement I expect to see banner headline, centerfold and a special “historical edition supplement” in the next edition of the NY Times.

If the Pope endorsed McCain the NYT would print a casual referece in small type on page 31.

blacks voting for Obama regardless of Obama’s qualifications= Blacks determined to see O.J. aquitted regardless of guilt.

Wrong and a serious threat to future race relations.

Ladies and Gentlemen: General Colin Powell has been known since 1991 as the “Reluctant Warrior”…a Beta male, a Dove and responsible for convincing G. Bush Senior not to go into Baghdad in the first Gulf War, therefore leaving the door open for our return. He was vehemently opposed to going back after 9/11 but was overruled and humiliated by Cheney and Rumsfeld. In comes Ms. Rice, an “Oh-so-Female” to more than adequately take his place. Powell does not like the Alpha male warrior McCain’s neocon wonks. It should be of no surprise that he would endorse Barack Obama (noting that we “done him wrong”). The good news is the 2nd Iraq war is becoming old news and Powell has been out of commission for 4 years and is now quite inert. Besides, “It’s the economy, stupid”, and that Powell knows nothing of. Peace.

And O! would have his operatives petition the DOJ to investigate the Catholic Church for “smearing” him.

Y-not on October 18, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Now wouldn’t that just be the cat’s meow if he instead endorsed McCain?

mustng66 on October 19, 2008 at 12:21 AM

I’ve long ago come to see Colin Powell as something of a disloyal, opportunistic turd.

This only confirms my suspicions.

seanrobins on October 19, 2008 at 12:41 AM

Oh, and let’s not forget how vigorously the Left has slimed Powell with their usual House N****r nonesense.

So, endorsing Obama just makes him plain stupid.

Another twisted thought from the resident dunce.
Question: What party have blacks voted with at about 80-90% of the total demographic for the last forty years?
Question: What was the race of the nominee for the party?
Question: What is the heaviest racial demographic of the GOP?
Question: Will the black vote alone vote anyone into office with 120 million voters nationwide?
Answers: Democrat/white/white/statistically impossible

If all the black voters for Obama were racist why in the name of Sam Hill did they support white candidates the last 40 years.
It ain’t racism sweetcheeks, no matter how badly you want to believe it.
As for a serious threat to future race relations are you saying that if a majority of the country picks Obama race relations should suffer?

Grow up Annie

Powell is laying down the law right now.

Typhonsentra on October 19, 2008 at 9:38 AM

Having a General endorse someone with no experience in the military doesnt give said person (OBAMA) the green light to be Commander In Chief for goodness sakes. Obama will and must lose this folks. This is absurd and a blatant racial endorsement by Powell. It has to be because it makes no other sense.

johnnyU on October 19, 2008 at 9:55 AM

So it’s official now. Sigh.

jgapinoy on October 19, 2008 at 10:01 AM

Colin Powell looked like a frightened deer in is first brief interview shown on FOX after announcing his support for Obama.

He is a liar, he’s full of shit, and a racist, based on the fact he is apparently lying for Obama so he can vote for him based on the color of his skin, since everything he said was bullshit, that must be the reason. I’m sure his wife made him speak out, and she probably has more “Onions” than he does.

No one suggested “Obama would have terrorist tendencies”, it was a question of judgment. his brushing off of Ayers was worse than the way Geraldo Rivera brushed Ayers off by saying Obama’s relationship with Ayers is akin to ‘the relationship one has with ones paper boy’. It was ridiculous and he FINALLY showed his true colors after hiding his beliefs all these years making everyone wonder! but not me, a true conservative is not afraid to say what they are!.

“Taxes for infrastructure” is fine, but he’s being disingenuous when he suggests that THAT is what Obama is going to increase taxes for. Also Mr. Powell, I believe, just said ‘taxes by definition is the redistribution of wealth’??. He apparently thinks we are stupid.

i never believed he was a republican or conservative, and those comments would never come out of a conservatives mouth.

No, i never really liked Colin Powell personally, there was something about his silence all these years that made me wonder when he was going to come out with this horse shit.

His time in the military, he appeared to be a good man, and im sure in that arena he was, but he’s out now, and in the public political areaa.

I always thought he came off as a bit of a pansy after hearing all those stories about how his wife apparently controls him so much.

I completely agree, johnnyU. There could be no other substantial reason given what we know of both Powell and Obama.

jgapinoy on October 19, 2008 at 10:01 AM

His endorsement of Obama does not surprise me…

…however, the “hee-hawing around” that he has done up to the present does surprise me. Just proves that he’s averse to any kind of controversy, and waited until the very, absolute, last minute to do what he intended to do all along.

uncivilized on October 19, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Yup. He got it over with.

wise_man on October 19, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Yes. Just heard it on the radio this AM. The dirty deed is done. He had to comment as to why, something about a “generational change”, etc. And then he added, and because Gov. Palin is not qualified for VP.

WHAT??? Frankly, that blows all his cred right out of the water. Palin is not qualified???? What about your two term state senator you’ve endorsed for the no. 1 position, General?? The term, “bald hypocrisy” comes to mind. Makes me think Powell has lost his pair. Seriously!

warriorlawyer on October 19, 2008 at 10:41 AM

I wonder if Powell has been promised to be in his cabinet.

wise_man on October 19, 2008 at 10:42 AM

And it’s not about race.
If it’s not about race then why was he on the defensive right out of the box.
Why would he even mention race?
Give the american people a break, we are not that stupid.

Gulf Coast on October 19, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Colin Powell – a mediocre courtier. Worries about the GOP becoming too far right, no worry about the Democrats being too far left. He is a backstabber. I blames the Bushes for pushing this guys career along.

Hilts on October 19, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Valid points, Hilts. I honestly can’t understand how anyone with a high pay grade like Powell could look at Obama, and not see all of the red flags that he has and still think that he would be okay for America.

If McCain went to a racist church for 20 years and left only when forced to when he got caught, and launched his political career in the house of a former abortion mill bomber — it would be insane for Powell to endorse him. So it’s mind boggling that he endorses Obama.

wise_man on October 19, 2008 at 11:03 AM

Powell was never going to endorse McCain. He coordinated with Obama’s advisors to make his endorsement at the most advantageous moment. I guess it is some good news that Obama’s team actually felt the need for Powell’s endorsement. McCain was foolish to think he was ever going to get the Powell endorsement.

Angry Dumbo on October 19, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Powell always generates this false sense of gravitas on television to mask a cautious, pedestrian, ‘don’t rock the boat’ mindset. Not a guy I would want to get behind.

Hilts on October 19, 2008 at 11:11 AM

But as he examined both campaigns in the last few weeks, he said, he became “concerned” that “in the case of Mr. McCain, he was a little unsure how to deal with the economic problems.”

“Every day, there was a different approach,” he said,

Unlike Congress. They have had it figured out since day one. Oh, wait……

adding that he also “would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court.”

So just exactly why does General Bowell consider himself a republican?

McCain would be a good president, Powell said, but Obama is “a transformational figure” who would be an “exceptional” leader.

and other than his popularity, what the hell is so transformational about the guy?

“I truly believe that at this point in America’s history we need a president who will not just continue … basically the policies we have followed in recent years,” he said. “We need a president with transformational qualities.”

For that reason, he said, “I will be voting for Barack Obama.”

Yeah, his transformational qualities certainly won’t lead us down the road of continuing what we have been doing…. like capitalism. But we will absolutely continue not holding anyone on the left responsible for their screw-ups.

Unfrigginbelievable.

JeffinOrlando on October 19, 2008 at 11:14 AM

wise man

Waht is most pathetci is all the 1/2 Republicans (as I call them) who actually thought that Powell or Condi Rice would make great GOP presidential (or vice peresidential) candidates. Powell thinks that Palin is not qualified but that Obama is qualified? Yes the word courtier comes to mind – sort of like David Gergen in the pundit class. These guys go back and forth from the Repubs to the Dems without missing a beat.

Hilts on October 19, 2008 at 11:14 AM
