Quote of the day

posted at 10:15 pm on October 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

“That Obama’s loss in the general election may have more to do with his performance than his melanin will be treated as something to acknowledge parenthetically at best. And that will be a dismissal of the very lesson Dr. King tried to teach us. Two decades ago, when Jesse Jackson ran for president and Time magazine did a cover with his picture and the headline “The Jackson Factor’, it was just to sell copies: We all knew America wasn’t ready for a black President. Perhaps the reaction was partly due to certain things about Jackson himself, but who knew that not so long later, a black man would be within a hair’s breadth of the White House in part because of his race? Yet, if we truly understand that King’s lesson was that black people are whites’ equals and not eternal poster children, then we must confront the fact that race is not the only reason Obama could lose.

King’s next birthday celebration will be, as it happens, the day before Inauguration Day, and I dread the prospect of black America treating King Day as an opportunity to rue how McCain’s swearing in will show ‘far we have to go’ 40 years after King’s death, rather than celebrating that how close Obama came to the prize showed how magnificently far we have come.”

I disagree. We’ve been ready for a Black or female President for a while, but no one was well-established on the national political stage enough to win.

That’s an interesting article, but I don’t really agree that an Obama defeat will suppress further runs by black candidates. The argument that it’s 2 steps forward, 3 back is not compelling.

btw Palin responded to Noonan twice apparently today, once on the Lars Larson show and once on her plane. Nice, typical Sarah, but even more notable was the refutation of the complains from the Trib on Palin’s experience noting the lack of concern expressed on Obama’s. Nice couple of minutes.

This election is about more than the differences between two candidates. I think it’s a contest between competing ideologies and both sides (but conservatives more than liberals, I think) see it as a chance to break the back of the competing ideology. Obama is the 60s never-grew-up-baby boomers’ chance for their day in the sun; if he’s rejected, their whole generation is done for. I think it’s less clear what conservatives gain from a McCain presidency; just keeping the Zero out is good enough for me.

Swap colors on McCain and Obama and ask if you would not still vote McCain? Abortion, judges, associations, judgment, experience, etc are more than enough to get me to McCain reguardless of skin color. That Obama sat under Wright can be abstracted from skin pigmentation.

Now as to the country at large, I have no idea what they will do come election day. Nor do I have a crystal ball to see into men’s hearts, but based on my own values I’d say the country would love a black Reagan, particularly compared to a worse than Edwards.

AnotherOpinion on October 17, 2008 at 10:35 PM

I don’t care about the color of a politician’s skin, I care about the color of their political ideology.

Obama’s color is a factor to me. He is red, as in communist red. Therefore, I am voting against him.

Plain and simple.

That’s an interesting article, but I don’t really agree that an Obama defeat will suppress further runs by black candidates. The argument that it’s 2 steps forward, 3 back is not compelling.

Spirit of 1776 on October 17, 2008 at 10:27 PM

I know the author here is not making this point, but I’ll believe people who whine about the lack of advancement of Blacks when they stop calling Condoleeza Rice a “skeeza”, stop calling Clarence Thomas an Uncle Tom, stop smearing Michael Steele, stop smearing Thomas Sowell, etc.

None of the people whining about the lack of advancement of Blacks ever give President Bush credit for Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice and they also don’t credit Clarence Thomas for rising to the Supreme Court.

When the race baiters stop their nonsense, then I will take them seriously.

Obama losing is not a step back for Blacks, it is a step back for *communism*. Period. America was well ready to receive a supposedly post-partisan, post-racial Black candidate for President. When it turned out that Obama was not what he was selling himself as, that is when people turned on him. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the character of (or lack there of) the man.

I think America would love to vote for a black President. I know I would. Honestly. The problem isn’t that America isn’t ready for a black president. I reject that premise because it is always put forth by liberals. It is that the liberals war against black conservatives. They have shown they will do everything they can to attempt to destroy them.
I voted for Lynn Swann here two years ago when he ran for Governor. He’s a great conservative man, and yes,, he’s black. How many blacks voted for him? I bet more white conservatives voted for Lynn Swann than black Democrats.
Any black conservative that would get near the national ticket would get worse than what Clarence Thomas got!
No, it is not that America is not ready for a black president,, it is that the Democrat liberals will destroy any black Republican conservative that attempts to run.

jgapinoy on October 17, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Those who have been “well-established,” have been so, to some extent, on the basis of being black or female, and little else. They are charged with acting or believing in a certain way, as if their gender or their color required it of them. Inasmuch as this is the case, the “dream” of Dr King is not only unrealized, but unduly delayed, by the very people who long the most for its being fulfilled.

Why Obama Will Win:

Bush anger
Hanging economic problems on Bush (I know, I know, but he was the MMFIC when it happened)
Hanging economic problems on Republicans (not true but the news is permitting it to stick)
White guilt
Voter fraud

Why Obama Will Lose:

Too liberal (historically, he should lose 50 of 50 states or very close to that… McGovern, Dukakis, Mondale)
Past associations (for those that know and care)
Socialist (again, for those that know and care, which, based on the bailouts, no one seems to)
When caught without teleprompter, doesn’t seem nearly as smart as folks pretend
The country is still 60%+ somewhat conservative or conservative
Truly extreme abortion view (for those that know and care)
Economic problems properly hung on Democrats (for those that know)
Bradley Effect (7-10% but who really knows)

I believe it will be a Mccain landslide with one very major concern… voter fraud.

I didn’t originally think this could be enough to change the outcome. Now, however, with all the states involved and the extent of the problem (so many locations with more on their rolls than their population).

There is one thing I know for sure. I’m glad I don’t own any property near the park where the Obama campaign is set to gather election night.

That’s a fair point. I was listening to Hannity this afternoon on my home from work and he was taking calls from Obama supporters. One guy gave as his reason for voting for Obama because he was going to give him more than McCain would. This man wanted his government “rebate” check plus health care and dental care etc. and when Hannity asked him whether he thought the government should provide him a car or not, he said he already had one! This is the mentality we’re dealing with–de Toqueville was right–once this society decides that it can vote itself largesse, that’s when democracy here dies.

stonemeister on October 17, 2008 at 10:43 PM

I think it would be tough to beat a black Republican. He or she wouldn’t lose many Republican votes, but would pick up quite a few Democratic votes. Democrats seem far more obsessed with the race of their candidates, after all.

The question is how much bile and hatred a black Republican would be exposed to from the left, particularly black leftists, on the national stage. You can understand why Colin Powell chose not to subject his family to that.

The problem, though, is the talent pool. There are no black Republican Governors — though Michael Steele came close. And not many black Republicans in Congress since before WWII. So, I’d say the first black Republican President is someone we haven’t heard of yet. Perhaps a veteran of Iraq or Afghanistan who will come home and run for mayor or congressman in 2010 or 2012, and begin his political career from there?

ClintACK on October 17, 2008 at 11:04 PM

Have we really come that far? I disagree with the notion Jackson was a non-factor just because he was black. He was a non-factor because he’s Jessee Jackson. Forty years ago, to be sure, a black man probably could not have made a serious run for the presidency.

Forty years later, we have one who’s a leading contender solely because he’s black; he would have been politely ushered off the stage during the primaries, with muffled snorts of amusement, if he was Barry O’Bama, white guy with paper-thin resume and shady past running against Hillary Clinton. For that matter, he never would have won a Senate seat without the unique confluence of radical leftists, race hustlers, and corrupt Chicago power brokers that groomed him as their instrument. And even at that, he wouldn’t have made it into the Senate, except he ran against a guy who somehow felt his erotic life wasn’t stimulating enough with Seven of Nine in his bedroom, and decided he just had to drag her off to clubs that resemble the average liberal’s idea of what Guantanamo Bay looks like. This is progress?

Did the Democrat Party, tribunes of all oppressed minorities (except those useless Cuban idiots who were dumb enough to run away from free health care and 110% literacy) have no one else that could be the first serious black candidate for President? This was it?

Doctor Zero on October 17, 2008 at 11:05 PM

My single largest concern that I haven’t heard about anywhere is:

If Obama is elected and the tax laws are sufficiently altered to the point that less than 50% are paying the taxes, we pass the famous tipping point where those who benefit from taxes and don’t pay any outnumber those who actually do pay. At that point, we cross the magic line of no return without severe social unrest. I see that as the actual goal of socialists. If they reach that point, their battle is all downhill from there.

Why in Hades is Barak Obama supposed to be the only possible black guy in America who could win an election? I know far too many intelligent and talented black people to even think that Obamajebus is the best Black America can do.

I’ll tell you why sometimes black candidates have problems getting elected. It’s an old, story. I think people fall in love with the idea of electing the “First Black (name of office here)” more than the all-too-human candidates themselves. So when a plausible black candidate shows up for an office, vetting becomes an afterthought until there is opposition to think about—which is often too late in the process.

What then happens in the election is that the opposing candidate’s oppo research finds some skeleton in the black candidate’s closet that his or her own campaign should have handled on Day One. It then becomes impossible to unsee what was seen—and the resulting repulsion from the voters overrides their desire to “make history.”

Kini on October 17, 2008 at 11:08 PM

Back during the clinton years, tax increases were always talked about in terms of “millionaires” – they should pay more taxes. They aren’t paying their fair share.

Gore, in 2000 made a proclamation one day that if you make $250,000 for 4 years, you are a millionaire, so you deserve a tax increase as well. That’s when $250,000 became the magical number.

In 2000, even the media balked at this. It was understood that 250,000 is nothing. It includes tons of s-corps and small businesses; especially hurting companies that carry inventory (retailers that do a lot of the hiring). Rush probably has it in his archives still.

But that’s when it became $250,000. Gore recognized that to increase revenue, taxing people over a million simply isn’t enough. Today, 250,000 is “worth less” than it was 8 years ago, so now you have more people in that bracket so now it’s a real money center.

So, yes, I’d expect in 3-4 years that $150,000 would become the new 250,000. And it’d keep getting lowered and lowered, probably till $100,000. I doubt it’d go much lower than that – the tax base dramatically increases at that point.

Anyways, that’s the short history of it.

lorien1973 on October 17, 2008 at 11:13 PM

America is ready for a competent president of any race. I

t is black racists who take every competent black candidate and excoriate them thereby rendering them unwilling to run. Colin Powell could have won years ago, but wouldn’t run because he knew what the press would do to him because he used to be a conservative. Condi won’t run because she is still a conservative, therefore she is deemed “not black enough” by people of her own race.

It’s not white people holding anybody down.

by Kini

What will happen is that inflation will put more and more people into that bracket just like more people find themselves paying the Alternative Minimum Tax.

At least the recent “bailout bill” allegedly fixed that problem temporarily.

I try not to think about that.

I think we’ve already reached the point at which it’s a one-way street. Under Democrats we creep closer to 51% non-payers, and under Republicans we just hold the line. Eventually we will cross that threshold, God help us.

America would have been ready for a black man that let anyone hit him with anything and not barter with his blackness, vis a vis Shelby Steele. There have been precious few black politicians of that sort till recently. Obama’s deafening silence on his surrogates’ use of the race card demonstrates that he’s not that kind of man, either.

spmat on October 17, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Blacks will be in a quandry if The Chosen One makes it to the White House (will we still be able to call it that without appearing RACIST?).

They’ll no longer be able to play the ‘victim’ game.

I disagree with the notion Jackson was a non-factor just because he was black. He was a non-factor because he’s Jessee Jackson.

Exactly! The libs portray Marxist liberal Democrat black candidates as the only standard, the norm. They are the only legitimate blacks. But, America is not liberal. Not yet, anyway. So,, Jesse Jackson is rejected because he’s a lib,, then the media writes stories about “America is not ready for a black president.” Which is not true. I really believe America would be eager to vote for a black president. That one act would show how great this country really is! A black elected as a Republican president would so threaten the Democrat party, I honestly believe that would be worse for them than even Roe vs Wade being overturned. They would rather have Sarah Palin for 3 terms than risk even one term of a black conservative Republican.
Well, 3 terms of Sarah Palin might be stretching it,, but a black conservative in the Oval office everyday, his picture hanging in public schools, post offices and Federal buildings across America would be like Armageddon for the Democrat party. They would risk losing, what?? 20% of their voting block?? They would risk losing their biggest ace card,, their weapons of all weapons,, calling Republicans racist!

I’m still trying to figure out why the black community is willing to accept the idea that the best black guy in America is one with a white parent. Somehow that seems like they are accepting that to make it they have to have some white genes.

Kini on October 17, 2008 at 11:02 PM

Kini: If I may piggyback on your comment, voters need to understand that with regard to the tax proposal of both candidates, the policies are held hostage by Congress. Why? Because our current set of tax rates expire, I believe, at the end of 2009.

If McCain wins, he’ll face a Democratic Congress that probably won’t cooperate. But I believe him when he says that he’ll try.

If Obama wins, and this is where I pick up on Kini’s comment, what’s to stop Obama from letting the current rates expire and then playing helpless against a Democratic Congress all of whom will pretend someone else is holding up extension of rate cuts? It’ll be perfect cover for Obama and Congressional Democrats. Look how the Dems are playing the Fannie-Freddie gambit–what, me responsible?

Obama may move to push through his series of nonsense refundable tax credits, but I’m with Kini. Obama can’t be trusted, and I don’t see any rates set in stone during his administration. Don’t forget: He’s got an excellent reputation for spending other people’s money–Chicago Annenberg Challenge and his earmarks while in the Illinois senate and the U.S. Senate.

BTW: Just heard two good McCain ads here in SW Ohio. But I heard an Obama ad lying about McCain’s health care plan. I really wish McCain or the RNC would do a quick add explaining it because I really is much better than Obama’s plan. It makes a lot more free-market sense, and it does a pretty fair job of putting employees and self-employeds on equal footing.

Burger flippers will be bouncing up against the $250k ceiling.

innominatus on October 17, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Our core problem is a permanent “welfare class”. Welfare has no upward mobility. Huey Newton (Black Panthers fame) viewed welfare correctly… enslavement of his race. When I look at policies pursued by liberals, I have to believe the liberal elites must have a racist agenda at their hidden core. Third world countries are kept from developing. They need fresh water and electricity. Constantly blocked by liberals. They need to be able to grow adequate quantities of food and have protection from disease. Liberals block their effective use of fertilizers and pesticides (DDT). Any moron recognizes that welfare is a de-motivator that serves primarily to keep people trapped. There are no efforts by liberals to build families and values in poor communities… they seem to provide incentives for just the opposite. We can reverse the trend towards socialism, but it will take people with principles and political will…. and it will take more than one generation.

Bracket creep. Even if McCain keeps the bush tax cuts in place, many people will pay higher taxes, even if mccain doesn’t raise taxes. It’s an interesting concept, but too difficult to explain to people.

It’s not Obama’s color per se that 95% of black voters are voting for. It’s an ethnically based division of governmental spoils that they’re voting for – the fair administration of which, in their view, requires that they get the turn that they’re entitled to. Far from challenging that ethos, Obama and the Democrats validate it, reinforcing the same racial identity and set of racial aspirations that they exploit. A Steele or a Swann can’t make the same racial claim because a conservative and indeed a real Republican philosophy contradicts the very basis of identity politics. For African American voters raised on the liberal plantation, Steele is merely someone they can distantly applaud – not someone who, to combine metaphors, puts their “skin in the game.”
