Given all the whining being done about Palin’s supposed failure to condemn viciousness at her rallies, why hasn’t The One politely asked the media to refrain from tearing a guy to pieces who had the temerity to ask him a question? Actually, it does. Obama has stated he is for actions, not just words, in making up for such things as slavery and the way Native Americans have been treated. That’s a yes. Obama appears to be for reparations.

Despite your rush to judgment, I did not absolve O or the dems from their own responsibility, I was pointing out that McCain has some responsibility in this mess. He is not faultless – he knows how the media operates as well as anyone, and he knows that invoking Joe W. so many times during the debate was going to add blood to the media feeding frenzy. You can try to place all the blame on the media and leftists, but you are quite wrong. Some of that belongs to McCain.

I for one have had to call a plumber on New Years Eve of all times due to frozen pipes and was happy to pay through the nose to have my water and heat back!

McCain was not the one who created the situation, Obama was. All McCain did was repeat something that Joe had said as. Of course that was after the press had already made asses of themselves over the whole thing. After all, that is how McCain heard about the plumber.

But hey, if you want to go on kissing Obama’s butt and making excuses for his bad behavior and the bad behavior of his campaign and supporters go ahead.

Earlier on Fox some Democrat was yammering on about how the McCain campaign had not vetted Joe. As if standing in your front yard and asking a question of a narcissistic politician should require vetting by anyone.

If you read the thread and my contributions to it you’d see that I am not promoting the Obama is for reparations meme, I merely provided a link to a report in which Obama refers to unspecified “deeds” in the context of reparations to aggrieved groups.

I also referenced his mentor and friend of 20 years, Reverend Wright, and his support of slave reparations.

You may not interpret Obama’s various statements on this subject as suggesting he’s for reparations, but others do, including the editorial board of the Investor’s Business Daily (excerpted below).

My own interpretation, as I said in my prior post, is that Obama is trying to play both sides of this issue — he won’t cut a check to the individual African-Americans, but he would ensure that there are government programs targeted solely for their benefit.

‘I consistently believe that when it comes to . . . reparations,” Obama recently told a gathering of minority journalists, “the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”
A few days later, he clarified his remarks, saying he’s not calling for direct cash payments to descendents of slaves, but rather indirect aid in the form of government programs that will “close the gap” between what he sees as white America and black America.
He says government should offer “universal” programs — such as universal health care, universal mortgage credits, college tuition, job training and even universal 401(k)s — that “disproportionately affect people of color.”
In other words, reparations by another name.

Clearly you and I disagree about whether a program of this type is a good idea, but don’t insult me or the other posters here by calling us ignorant. In any event, it’s an interesting academic exercise, but not really the crux of the matter, imho.

At the end of the day, what Obama’s “redistribution” answer to Joe’s question reveals is the fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals… which is why it was a great question and well worth the attention McCain gave it in the debate. For many people, the exchange between Obama and Joe will be their “aha” moment when they will finally recognize Obama’s core belief in big government.

For myself, I actually arrived at the realization that John McCain and I share similar values about government spending and taxes when he gave his “$5 million” answer to the “what is rich?” question. I thought it was ironic that he got so much flak for that answer. It was clear that he pulled that number out of the air after some struggle because he doesn’t believe in an arbitrary number that defines “rich,” nor does he believe in punishing success.

I know that my salary now does not reflect the years of sacrifice of living in crummy apartments, getting 4 meals off of one chicken, having no car, and taking no vacations. Nor does my salary go as far in California as it did in Indiana (to say the least!). The point is, my husband and I made choices to sacrifice early in our marriage for my schooling and career — without burdening society, I might ad — why should we be penalized now that we are finally reaping the benefits of those choices?

Paying taxes is a responsibility, but contrary to what the other Joe (Biden) said, there is nothing patriotic or noble about high taxes. One could certainly argue that the reverse is true. My husband’s colleagues in non-profit fundraising are all bracing themselves for the negative effects that higher taxes will have on charitable giving under the Obama-Pelosi-Reid administration.
