McCain to Obama: Lay off Joe the Plumber

posted at 3:53 pm on October 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

“Americans ought to be able to ask Senator Obama tough questions without being smeared and targeted with political attacks,” says Maverick, speaking for every conservative in America. Has The One’s campaign formally attacked J the P, though? I’d be shocked if they have, as that’s not their M.O. They like to leave the nastiest stuff, particularly in the racial vein, for their surrogates and for the media so that St. Barack can keep his hands clean. I assume Maverick’s accusing them of feeding oppo research on Wurzelbacher’s tax liens, etc, to the press under the radar, but even there I’m skeptical. Anyone think our very impartial media wasn’t willing to go dumpster diving on its own here?

Exit quotation: “Plunge the crap out of Washington.”

Update: A good point’s being raised in the comments that I should have mentioned myself. Given all the whining being done about Palin’s supposed failure to condemn viciousness at her rallies, why hasn’t The One politely asked the media to refrain from tearing a guy to pieces who had the temerity to ask him a question? Why is he content to let this go on? And yes, that’s a rhetorical question.

Report: Secret Service Says ‘Kill Him’ Allegations at Palin Rally Unfounded
A Secret Service agent called charges that a man yelled “kill him” in reference to Barack Obama during a Sarah Palin rally “unfounded”

I guess the Obamatrons with computing skills are laying low until after David Kernell’s trial in case he plans to cut a deal and rat out his buddies.

Does “spread the wealth” include slave reperations Senator Government?

dhunter on October 17, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Yes because pointing out he isn’t a liscenced plumber and would in fact probably recieve a tax cut under Obama’s plan is akin to supporters of McCain calling Obama a terrorist and yelling for his death.

crr6 on October 17, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Both halves of this statement are wrong. I own a one man business much like some independent plumbers operate, and my tax burden is going to go way up under the Democrats’ tax bill as it’s currently written. The rules changes in Rangel’s HR3970 would have cost me an extra $5000 this year due to an expanded application of the “self employment tax” to all company income in addition to wage income. I’m so sick of hearing Obama lie about taxes, I can barely stand it anymore. And yes, Charlie Rangel is writing tax legislation.

The second part about the death threats apparently didn’t happen according to the Secret Service.

Does anybody believe that they are actually going to pay less taxes under Obama?

neuquenguy on October 17, 2008 at 4:28 PM

It’s not that you’ll “pay less taxes”, it’s more accurately stated as “you won’t have to pay more taxes” unless you’re over $250k.

That is, until Bush’s cuts expire. If they’re not renewed, then EVERYONE’S taxes go up. And I doubt Senator Government intends to renew them… Maverick has already stated that he will.

See, crr6, we’re opposed to ANY form of new tax – whether it affects us or not!

Yes, the ONE’s Campaign has officially attacked Joe the Plumber and other plumbers as well.

Joe Biden said he is worried about “real plumbers” on the tonight show and Barack Obama said McCain is worried about “plumbers” today at his campaign rally. Like plumbers are a priveledged class unlike tenured idiot teachers.

Does “spread the wealth” include slave reperations Senator Government?

WTF are you talking about?

DaveS on October 17, 2008 at 4:31 PM

This, I think.

CHICAGO » Sen. Barack Obama, speaking to a gathering of minority journalists yesterday, stopped short of endorsing an official U.S. apology to American Indians but said the country should acknowledge its history of poor treatment of certain ethnic groups.

“There’s no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country, we’ve got some very sad and difficult things to account for,” Obama told hundreds of attendees of UNITY ‘08, a convention of four minority journalism associations.

The Hawaii-born senator, who has told local reporters that he supports the federal recognition bill for native Hawaiians drafted by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, noted other ethnic groups but did not mention native Hawaiians when answering a question about his thoughts on a formal U.S. apology to American Indians.

“I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said.

“I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it’s Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”

However, in digging around it looks like he’s trying to play it both ways — appearing to back off on endorsing the ’slave reparations’ concept that his buddy Rev. Wright advocates, but still offering a big piece of PIE to members of any group who fill slighted by past mistreatment.

I’m looking forward to receive my cut of the PIE under the Irish-American Reparations Act of 2009.

Does “spread the wealth” include slave reperations Senator Government?

dhunter on October 17, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Yes, I believe it does – and so does Jesse Jackson. As he stated in the New York Post, Wednesday, 10/15/2008:

Will Obama’s election close the chapter of black grievances linked to memories of slavery? The reverend takes a deep breath and waits a long time before responding.

“No, that chapter won’t be closed,” he says. “However, Obama’s victory will be a huge step in the direction we have wanted America to take for decades.”

Jackson rejects any suggestion that Obama was influenced by Marxist ideas in his youth. “I see no evidence of that,” he says. “Obama’s thirst for justice and equality is rooted in his black culture.”

But is Obama – who’s not a descendant of slaves – truly a typical American black?

Jackson emphatically answers yes: “You don’t need to be a descendant of slaves to experience the oppression, the suffocating injustice and the ugly racism that exists in our society,” he says. “Obama experienced the same environment as all American blacks did. It was nonsense to suggest that he was somehow not black enough to feel the pain.”

So, yes, I truly believe slave reparations will happen if Obama is elected. Hang on to your pocketbook!

What does that even mean? Anyone who thinks the media, and acorn and the democrat party are somehow seperate independant entities operating on their own must be a manhattan liberal. Maybe barry and pelosi don’t pick up the phone and tell the head of acorn where to go and what to do directly, maybe, but anyone thinking these organizations aren’t working in concert is crazy or blind (in other words, a manhattan liberal).

Back to the topic…

I really despised the way John McCain spent so much time during the debate talking about Joe the Plumber’s personal life. I mean, the way he held up his voter registration information, spelled out his last name, read out his home address, told us about his tax status and what licenses he held… that really bothered me. It’s almost as if John McCain didn’t want to address the millions of people who had heard Senator Obama’s response to Joe’s question through the news reports and viral videos and instead wanted to exploit Joe’s weaknesses and failings.

Yep, that John McCain is an angry old man.

Question: Is the $250,000 figure being thrown about the total revenue or net income before taxes? If it’s total revenue, it doesn’t take very long at all for a small business to cross that threshold.

AubieJon on October 17, 2008 at 4:28 PM

That would be net income before taxes. Or more exactly: “Small business profits” is equal to the net profits less net losses of sole proprietors, S-corporation shareholders, and partners. Back of the envelope estimate that JTP was able to earn 20% profit margin (A pretty large profit margin) indicates that his Gross yearly revenues would have to be approx. $1,250,000.00 in order to earn $250,000 net income.

CinnamongirlUF on October 17, 2008 at 6:06 PM

How did three weeks before the election did everyone become obsessed with Joe the Plumber? And what does this whole episode reveal about how the left will go after someone who happens to make The One look less than swell?

Remember this guy didn’t seek out Barack Obama, Obama was doing a photo op in his neighborhood and Joe came out to ask a question. And now we’re at the point where journalists and liberal bloggers are swarming all over this guy’s personal background with an avidity that they haven’t shown about Barack Obama’s record and associates. Does he have a license? Is he registered to vote? Does he have tax liens? Is he related to Charles Keating? Is he a Republican?

They even posted his address on the internet. How low will these guys go to attack anyone who says anything that makes their guy look less than awesome?

What the left doesn’t understand is that Joe’s personal background doesn’t matter at all. What matters is Obama’s answer. And when asked about how Obama’s tax plan would affect a small businessman earning over $250,000, Obama said that it was time to “spread the wealth around.” And it turns out, as James Pethokoukis points out, that overwhelmingly most Americans aren’t in favor of redistributionist tax policies. But Obama revealed that his instincts are, as he told Charlie Gibson in the Democratic debate, to tax wealth as a matter of “fairness.”

So on the way to the coronation of President Obama, one ordinary guy asked a question that made Obama look bad. And the response by those on the left is that this guy Must Be Destroyed. And both Democratic candidates look for easy jokes about what type of plumber earns $250,000. They are tone deaf to the idea that Joe was asking a question about his dream, a dream that many people share of working hard and building up a small business.

As Ed Morrissey describes what we’ve learned from this revealing episode,

1. Thou shalt not offend The One by asking him a question. Of any kind.
2. Anyone who questions The One will have to undergo a public pillorying of a kind unseen since the Red Scare, or perhaps the Inquisition.
3. The Tanning-Bed Media will happily participate in any inquisition, as long as it keeps them from investigating irrelevant issues like Obama’s ties to the Chicago Machine, William Ayers, ACORN, or his record on protecting infanticide.

For those on the left who think that this whole story is about Joe’s personal background, let me put in in terms they should understand. Think of Joe as a symbolic construct whose situation is “fake but accurate.” The left always seems to like that sort of approach to what they regard as underlying truths. Think of him as the left thought of Rigoberta Menchu, the Guatemalan writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature with her autobiography of how, as an indigenous Mayan, she and her family had suffered at the hands of the Guatemalan army. Except it turns out that many of the details in her autobiography were fabrications. That didn’t matter to the left or the Nobel Prize Committee because they regarded her story, true or not, as an essential expression of suffering that could have been true.

It doesn’t matter if Joe is secretly a multimillionaire plumbing magnate or an apprentice plumber with unrealistic dreams. What matters is how Obama answered his question and what it revealed about his approach to redistribution of wealth. We’re not about to elect Joe the Plumber.

A further thought: I would have thought that Democrats would have learned the dangers of going too far in sliming an opponent or anyone who doesn’t support their guy. They helped promote Sarah Palin to a phenomenon by their relentless pursuit of anything that could be used against her. Questioning whether or not she was really the mother of her baby and if she could serve as vice president with a Down Syndrome infant set her up not only for a backlash among ordinary people but helped innoculate her against more substantive criticisms.

Obama suffered some of his biggest setbacks in the primaries after he was taped describing Pennsylvanians as bitterly clinging to their guns and religion. Now John Murtha is having to backtrack after calling his own constituents in western Pennsylvania racists because they might not support Barack Obama. And Obama’s followers are now all outraged that a guy asked the senator a question that evoked a revealing answer when Obama popped into his neighborhood for a photo op. It wasn’t Joe’s question that was so important, but Obama’s answer.

Are they trying to demonstrate that they have actually no real care for ordinary people unless those people are falling in line to vote for The One? They really ought to be more careful not to let that mask slip before the election is over.

Y-not on October 17, 2008 at 4:43 PM

and

So, yes, I truly believe slave reparations will happen if Obama is elected. Hang on to your pocketbook!

txstar on October 17, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Hate to point out your ignorance, but Obama has not said anything that could be interpreted as in favor of reparations. In fact he has remarked multiple times that he is against such reparations. Obama has stated : “I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again — that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.” 8/2/08 Source NY Daily News.
In fact in Obama’s 2004 Senate contest he was asked about reparations in a debate with Alan Keyes. Keyes stated that reparations should be given in the form of a 1-2 generation tax exemption for descendents of slaves. However, Obama stated that”The legacy of slavery is immeasurable, but the best strategies for moving forward would be vigorously enforcing our anti-discrimination laws in education and job training.” Source CBS 2 Chicago

This Website itself, or at least AP, acknowledged back in July that Obama “himself would be cool to this idea[Reparations], believing as he does that white grievances are a function of economic insecurity and, therefore, would likely be intensified by massive compulsory redistributions of wealth based on race. And indeed he was cool to it during his senate run in 2004.” Source Hot Air.

Obama is for reparations for African Americans.

Aggravating isn’t it?

Reality is, McCain should not have invoked The Plumber some 15 times in the debate.

Good point, troll, it should have been 30.

I would love to see a national plumber outrage against Obama’s first class team and demand a non-ceiling income tax break or else, they won’t work on his house!!

This incident my friends, is. the. straw. that. broke. the. back. of. Obama’s. first class. campaign!!

Period…

End.

Of.

Story.

*Obama and his first class supporters will rue the day he ever walked that first class rope line acting all first class cocky in answering first class political questions!!

*Now reread my emphasized comments here and scream them as loud as you can, for me, because I’m so hoarse already, I cannot scream anymore.

Oh well.

Let me go out and practice kicking the mental, psychological and emotional crap out of people.

I’ll see you later.

I’ve had enough for one day.

Barack Obama’s slimy surrogates were on TV talking about how McCain failed to “vet” Joe the Plumber.

They’re taking part in these attacks, directly.

Obama is 100% to blame for this.

daryl_herbert on October 17, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Back of the envelope estimate that JTP was able to earn 20% profit margin (A pretty large profit margin) indicates that his Gross yearly revenues would have to be approx. $1,250,000.00 in order to earn $250,000 net income.

Thanks for these numbers.

So if Joe’s business employed himself and 4 plumbers working 50 to 60 hr work weeks at a typical hourly rate, wouldn’t he gross that much?

In any event, it’s an interesting academic exercise, but not really the crux of the matter, imho.

At the end of the day, what Obama’s “redistribution” answer to Joe’s question reveals is the fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals… which is why it was a great question and well worth the attention McCain gave it in the debate. For many people, the exchange between Obama and Joe will be their “aha” moment when they will finally recognize Obama’s core belief in big government.

For myself, I actually arrived at the realization that John McCain and I share similar values about government spending and taxes when he gave his “$5 million” answer to the “what is rich?” question. I thought it was ironic that he got so much flak for that answer. It was clear that he pulled that number out of the air after some struggle because he doesn’t believe in an arbitrary number that defines “rich,” nor does he believe in punishing success.

I know that my salary now does not reflect the years of sacrifice of living in crummy apartments, getting 4 meals off of one chicken, having no car, and taking no vacations. Nor does my salary go as far in California as it did in Indiana (to say the least!). The point is, my husband and I made choices to sacrifice early in our marriage for my schooling and career — without burdening society, I might ad — why should we be penalized now that we are finally reaping the benefits of those choices?

Paying taxes is a responsibility, but contrary to what the other Joe (Biden) said, there is nothing patriotic or noble about high taxes. One could certainly argue that the reverse is true. My husband’s colleagues in non-profit fundraising are all bracing themselves for the negative effects that higher taxes will have on charitable giving under the Obama-Pelosi-Reid administration.

2nd lawsuit challenges Obama’s citizenship
Man demands state verify birth records or remove senator from ballots

Note: It is incumbent upon ALL Secretaries of State in all of the United States to BOTH accurately verify Voters AND candidates. Barack Hussein Obama has sealed his “Hawaiian” birth records and also records in Kenya.

Failure to verify and certify qualification for ALL candidates in a general election by any Secretary of State may be a cause of action (dereliction of duty) and criminal charges may be filed.

Hate to point out your ignorance, but Obama has not said anything that could be interpreted as in favor of reparations.

Thanks for that cordial post.

If you read the thread and my contributions to it you’d see that I am not promoting the Obama is for reparations meme, I merely provided a link to a report in which Obama refers to unspecified “deeds” in the context of reparations to aggrieved groups.

I also referenced his mentor and friend of 20 years, Reverend Wright, and his support of slave reparations.

You may not interpret Obama’s various statements on this subject as suggesting he’s for reparations, but others do, including the editorial board of the Investor’s Business Daily (excerpted below).

My own interpretation, as I said in my prior post, is that Obama is trying to play both sides of this issue — he won’t cut a check to the individual African-Americans, but he would ensure that there are government programs targeted solely for their benefit.

‘I consistently believe that when it comes to . . . reparations,” Obama recently told a gathering of minority journalists, “the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.”
A few days later, he clarified his remarks, saying he’s not calling for direct cash payments to descendents of slaves, but rather indirect aid in the form of government programs that will “close the gap” between what he sees as white America and black America.
He says government should offer “universal” programs — such as universal health care, universal mortgage credits, college tuition, job training and even universal 401(k)s — that “disproportionately affect people of color.”
In other words, reparations by another name.

Clearly you and I disagree about whether a program of this type is a good idea, but don’t insult me or the other posters here by calling us ignorant. All you are doing is further reinforcing the notion that Obama’s supporters are mindless trolls incapable of engaging in an intelligent discussion with people whose views differ from their own.

Have a nice day.

McCain was not the one who created the situation, Obama was. All McCain did was repeat something that Joe had said as. Of course that was after the press had already made asses of themselves over the whole thing. After all, that is how McCain heard about the plumber.

But hey, if you want to go on kissing Obama’s butt and making excuses for his bad behavior and the bad behavior of his campaign and supporters go ahead.

Earlier on Fox some Democrat was yammering on about how the McCain campaign had not vetted Joe. As if standing in your front yard and asking a question of a narcissistic politician should require vetting by anyone.

BTW, I think this was bad, but not as tacky as the Sarah Palin is a Cunt Tshirts.

Bottom line: All the attacks on Joe are good for McCain because it will keep in the news cycle the exchange b/w Obama and Joe and that doesn’t do Obama any favors. The best strategy for Obama and his surrogates would be to drop this one and fast. Right now their battling McCain on ground of his choosing, not theirs.

I’m bored, so I’m going to pretend I’m a Democrat and just make stuff up:
“In Senator Obama’s new tax relief plan, the government buys you $3000 dollars of lottery scratch tickets. A representative from Acorn will do the actual scratching of your tickets, but you must pay him $200.00 per hour or you are a racist.
You get to keep all the losing tickets, the government keeps all the winners, and then somebody will stop by and shoot your dog.”
