Guess who else has tax liens?

posted at 8:30 am on October 17, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the Tanning Bed Media discovered unpaid tax liens against Joe Wurzelbacher.  Two days ago, we would have said, “Who?”  He’s better known this week as Joe the Plumber after his impromptu dialogue with Barack Obama produced a blatantly redistributionist answer from the Democratic presidential candidate.

In their haste to pillory Joe for the audacity of asking a tough question of Obama, the Tanning Bed Media missed a couple of other interesting tax liens.  Patterico does the work of the TBM:

Oh — I almost forgot to mention: Martin Nesbitt, the treasurer of Obama’s campaign, has tax liens. So do his companies.

You’d think that matters more than the tax liens of Joe the Plumber, wouldn’t you? But good luck finding a Big Media story about Nesbitt’s liens.

If tax liens are such an indicator of character and trustworthiness, wouldn’t it have more significance for the treasurer of a presidential campaign than for a man who just asked a question of the candidate?  If the national media has such an interest in investigating a plumber who made a couple of national appearances, why wouldn’t they have at least the same interest in the people running a major party presidential campaign?  Of course not.  The same people who instruct us that Barack Obama’s 20-year membership in Jeremiah Wright’s church while Wright called 9/11 “chickens coming home to roost” now interrogate Joe the Plumber on national TV about his brief flirtation with the Natural Law Party.

Because, you know, associations matter when choosing a plumber, but apparently not when choosing a President.

On F&F this morning Geraldo begged Sen. McCain to stop the Bill Ayers attacks because everyone has bad associates and not two minutes later, when asked about the media scrutiny of Joe the Plumber said, “what did he expect”. Irony or am I just being oversensitive?

Cindy Munford on October 17, 2008 at 8:45 AM

It’s called desperation. ObamaTitanic is sinking and there is nothing they can do to stop it. Expect the desperation to increase in scope and intensity as we draw closer to October 29.

ManlyRash on October 17, 2008 at 8:47 AM

Tax liens don’t matter.

And yes, this guy is getting more attention that he deserves. But McCain is a big part of that. For better or worse, he’s become part of this election, mostly at the doing of Camp McCain.

As far as the media goes, I think it’s acceptable that they look into any public records on him since he has become a touchstone in this campaign.

But, the thing that REALLY matters about Joe the Plumber is that Obama’s tax plan would lower taxes for him, even if he bought the 280,000 business he asked Obama about.

So no, John McCain, Obama will not be raising Joe the Plumbers taxes. Now let’s leave the guy alone.

“Getting” Joe the Plumber isn’t what is important to them… it’s sending the message to everyone else what happens to you if you speak out. Coming soon… a big letter R that must be on all of our clothing… all our names will be required to be changed… men’s names will have to have “Ronnie” somewhere in them and women will require a name of “Sarah” contained in them. Then loss of property rights. Followed by re-education camps.

Look forward to the good part. If you’ve seen the video from the former KGB guy saying those are the first people to be lined up and shot, we can have the joy of helping carry their ammunition…

“Joe the Plumber” is EVERYMAN who Blowhard “O’Reilly” claims to speak for. But yesterday (to Laura Ingraham’s justifiable outrage) he smugly dismissed him and it was Obama who was the “stand-up, unfront guy”. He then proceeded with his DailyKOS and ACORN stories on outrageous defamation and voter fraud. I’m telling you, O’Reilly is planning a big publicity stunt “endorsement” that I hope ends his career on Fox News.

This is why I don’t like early voting, lots can happen in the last couple of weeks. Early voting started here in NC yesterday and there where 10 times more people voting than last year, with Obama up in the polls in the NC. If we lose NC we are toast, because Virginia appears to be gone with over 8% advantage to Obama in the RCP averages.
Early voting also gives ACORN an extra month to cheat.

If the liberals ever turn to violence instead of trying to simply ruin people professionally and financially, it should be interesting since they appear to be getting more ruthless and more desperate.

Joe is about as average American, hard working guy trying to realize the American dream as it gets. He has a few things working against him:

1) He dared contradict “O”
2) He’s white
3) He’s legal
4) Other hard working people trying to realize the American dream can relate.
5) Biden doesn’t know him personally (doesn’t eat at Cathy’s)

Take note that this is what is happening to the rest of us if Der Obama ever gets elected.

The Ballad of Joe the Plumber

(to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s arrangement of “Some of Shelley’s Blues” written by former Monkee Michael Nesmith)

They tell me
He understands the stuff that motivates me
He’ll fix the hole that’s in my soul and sell me
That he can spend my money better than me

They said
That by guns and Bibles my life is led
It’s bitterness that drives what’s all inside of my head
And that by his elite snobs I should be led

As far as I can see, it’s a pile of cow manure
This ol’ false messiah should be flushed right down the sewer

And we’ll lose
He’s never walked in Joe the Plumber’s shoes
If he gets in charge, there’s nothing for us but bad news
I won’t be fooled, my friends, and neither should you

Part of the story here is that the MSM know how fragile the Obama myth is. If they were confident at all in their guy, they’d do the occasional “expose” to appear to be fair. But there is just too much crap and too many scary things about Obama. They are terrified of this thing unraveling on them in the last 2 1/2 weeks.
I only hope JTP gets pissed off enough to go to a McCain rally and tell the crowd about the intrusion on his life by the MSM and moonbats ever since he had the gall to question, “The One.”
And yes, I ordered an “I am Joe the Plumber” shirt yesterday.

Sven10077,

First off, Joe himself admits he would receive a tax cut under Obama’s proposal:

So today, Joe, who said he makes much less than $250,000, reluctantly admitted Obama would lower his taxes.

“I would, if you believe him, I would be receiving his tax cuts,” Wurzelbacher said.

Now, I’m not quite sure what you’re saying in that he’ll face an AMT and SE. Is he not a small business owner now? If so, he’s face those under both Obama and McCain, except under Obama he would receive a tax reduction on his income.

If he already is a small business owner, then he has to pay AMT and SE tax any way, but would still see a reduction in his income tax under Obama.

So, yes, Obama will cut his taxes.

What this is doing, though, is keeping that response in the news while at the same time pissing off people who don’t like seeing a working class guy smeared simply for daring to question The One’s tax plan. It’s a thunderingly stupid thing to do but the MSM and the Obamabots can’t help themselves.

Tom_Shipley on October 17, 2008 at 9:10 AM

I do it for a living Tom thanks. Bambi pretends it is hard for a plumbing business to break 250,000 in gross receipts….”not true”. Bambi is delivering a “cut” to “the little people” through changing portions of heretofore nonrefundable credits into refundable ones. Self-employment tax draws you away from the threshholds needed to flip the credits. The AMT kicks in because the donks have thwarted every effort to fix a “needed tool” that was initially designed to get 300 people that ironically Teddy K thought “paid too little”.

Every deduction he uses to try to draw down his gross to a better net to grab the Bambi bucks will increase his risk of falling prey to the AMT which will nuke the refundability of the credits.

but please do go on….

He’s getting berated and his personal privacy violated by the media and to Obamazombies. Is this the kind of world we live in now? I know he does give some of it up when he agreed to go on TV and do the interviews, however, he’s still a private citizen. Is more of this what we have to look forward to? Tom_Shipley on October 17, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Tom the BUSINESS can easily make 250,000 to support say 7 employees. Further you miss the nuance. Bambi bucks rely on the refundability of credits but the AMT rules interfere with credits because “you deducted too much”.

Small businessmen will be in the quandry of relying on eating valid business deductions to get refundable credits.

The entire system is and hasd been skewed for the last 32 years.

“Thanks Great Society”….

but not to worry if you are right about election day and I am wrong we’ll get LBJ and JEC’s bastard son to ram the metaphorical wienie up small business’ rears to “pay for the help”…..

Billy-Jeff raised taxes and forgot his middle class tax cut he promised after “I worked harder than ever before and stayed up real late but the money to buy the cuts just weren’t there.”

Bambi will have a similar speech so all this talk of the impact of AMT and such is likely academic.

You may not grasp this concept yet, but welfare has no upward mobility. Working for a living, no matter what you choose to do, does make upward mobility possible. Open your pinko handbook to the chapter that covers things to avoid…. I’m sure upward mobility is covered there.

Just a quick comment on the $250k nonsense because I haven’t mentioned it yet today: The Democrats tax plan as it currently exists will definitely raise taxes on all small businesses that operate of are taxed as S-Corps. The increase is in Rangel’s tax bill (HR3970)right now, and I’ve seen no indication that Obama opposes it. In fact, he talks about “closing loopholes for corporations” (hoping people will assume he’s talking about big businesses, which s-corps are not). Anyway, HR3970 will expand the application of “self-employment tax” to all s-corp income whether the S-corp makes $250,000 or not.

This will be a big tax increase on small business that few have yet noticed, but I have because it will cost me a bunch of money each year.

Tom_Shipley on October 17, 2008 at 8:51 AM

Really? Last I heard, Mr. Obama said this directly to Mr. Joe the Plumber’s face:

“It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

Tom, if I get what Mr. Obama’s saying right, he want to use the power of the government to take Joe the Plumber’s money and give it to someone else.

Obama’s plan would NOT lower taxes. He would increase taxes and offset them to select people in the form of grants and credits. It’s not even clear that Joe would qualify for these giveaways, much less the rest of us. After all, will Joe’s plumber truck qualify for Obama’s $7,000 yuppie credit for a clean air vehicle?

What it comes down to is that Obama showed his cards, and they were not cards the American people wanted him to show. Now the polls show a narrowing, where the trends previously had been a widening.

Americans, in their hearts, are not Liberals — they are Conservatives.

O’Reilly is planning a big publicity stunt “endorsement” that I hope ends his career on Fox News.

Marcus on October 17, 2008 at 8:54 AM

Speaking of the “Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity,” (whatever the heck that means) I’ve personally had enough of his “analysis” and thoughts and commentary.

Just about any affinity I had for O’Reilly’s stances on anything have basically disappeared. His ego is out of control.

Fox News is almost unwatchable anymore. Just add them to the Mainstream Media column…

“I would, if you believe him, I would be receiving his tax cuts,” Wurzelbacher said.

In saying that “even JtP admits Obama’s plan would lower his taxes”, how is it you missed the little qualifying phrase, “if you believe him”, in the middle of Joe’s statement?

Michael Savage coined a great phrase to illustrate Obama’s tax plan, “Trickle-up Poverty”.

You know who else was asking for it, Tom? Them Jooooooos.

Their wealth got redistributed, too.

Well, here’s some good news for the day. Back in mid August, Soros bought $811 million of Petrobras (PBR) around $50 a share….. it is trading around $25 today.

Just after THE MESSIAH revealed his 95% tax plan, several economically minded folks ran the numbers and found that the magic number is more like $105K was the rich line. On Rush yesterday a guy ran THE ONE’S plan and found he would have to pay in $4,000 more and he did NOT make $250K. Following this logic, Joe might be joined by quite a few more Americans in the lien grouping.

Americans are not going to like this digging into Joe’s private life. They have gone beyond just the tax lien thing and are now publishing his divorce record. Howard Wolfson was on Fox this a.m. prattling off the list of No-No’s that the Obama brownshirts have dug up on Joe. He even said McCain did not properly vet Joe! I firmly believe the Obama camp has crossed the smear and kill rubicon for the last time to the American public. I too smell a backlash on this one!

I am not quite as sold as Manly on a McCain win, but I am taking great comfort in Manly’s thinking, and the fact that Joe delivered to the common folks what Obama will give this country on every single issue. Joe might have just saved John’s bacon! You sort of want to tell the McCain camp to put Joe in because he pretty much sums all this mess up in 30 seconds!

Go Joe! May God keep you safe and blessed!

I can’t find Obama’s plan for plumbers, but I found his plan for farmers. If the income from your farm exceeds $250,000 you are identified as a “large corporate agribusiness”!

Strong Safety Net for Family Farmers: Obama and Biden will fight for farm programs that provide family farmers with stability and predictability. They will implement a $250,000 payment limitation so that we help family farmers — not large corporate agribusiness. They will close the loopholes that allow mega farms to get around the limits by subdividing their operations into multiple paper corporations.

Paging Joe the Farmer

Another unpleasant reminder: Obama won’t write tax legislation if he gets elected. Charlie Rangel will. So whatever Obama says now, what he will get is whatever Rangel writes and whatever the rest of the leftists add into it.

It’s not going to be pretty. My tax burden is already going to go up do to the expanded application of the self employment tax, and we haven’t even seen what else Pelosi and Reid and Co come up with yet.

I can’t believe how Obama’s treasurer can be so “unpatriotic” not paying his tax bills. You know what they say, “you are judged by the company you keep”

So, when I have more time, I’ll try and educate myself more on the subject and see if I agree with what you’re saying.

Translation: I don’t know what I am talking about but I am going to pretend I do anyway, and when someone who is smarter than me throws my ignorance in my face stick my fingers in my ears and repeat,“Hope and Change, Hope and Change” over and over so I can’t hear them.

See Tom this is why you shouldn’t rely on sound bites and talking points provided by your handlers, some people actually take a position based on principles supported by facts and figures rather than dreamy rhetoric and well choreographed stump speeches.

Yes, and Megyn Kelly lost it. She kept saying, SO WHAT?! The kicker is that she obviously doesn’t know (thanks to Patterico and Ed Morrissey) that Obama’s own treasurer has tax liens, as well as Bill Burton, his idiot campaign yap dog, and a host of other Obamatons.

Moreover (I’m not positive because I had it on but wasn’t actually watching it) I also believe that Wolfson tried to make a big deal out of the fact that his real name is “Sam”.

I hope someone got video. I love when Kelly chews out boneheads.

I think it shows what a low opinion most Democrat operatives have of ordinary people. Do they think we’re so stupid as to think it was McCain’s responsibility to vet “Sam the Plumber”, or that any of that other stuff about the guy even matters? What matters to me is Obama’s socialistic response.

Heh, I just overheard Palin on the TV say Obama sounded like a socialist when he answered the plumber.

Yep! She finally called Obambi’s ideas ’socialist’!

FINALLY!

I agree with Manly. Obititanic is mortally wounded and taking on water fast. The death throes of his campaign will be nasty.

And just breaking, the Supreme Court just sided with the friggin’ dem on the 200K vote dispute.

Damnit. Two hundred thousand Obambi votes are going to be counted in Ohio. W won with something like 188K. Guess they decided to make damn sure Ohio goes for Obambi this election.
