What we can learn from the Joe the Plumber episode; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll Added

Honestly, I’m rather surprised that Joe Wurzelbacher and his rope-line dialogue with Barack Obama has managed to stay in the news for as long as it has.  I knew when I first heard the exchange that it went badly for Obama.  I didn’t expect Joe the Plumber to be the main topic of the last presidential debate.  And I certainly didn’t expect Obama supporters to keep the story alive by their rabid character assassination of a man who did nothing more than ask a question — at random.

Now, we have people crawling over his tax records, his voter registration, his professional licensing, and whatever else they can find in the public record.  Someone has linked him to the long-deceased Charles Keating, suggesting that somehow Obama managed to pick a McCain plant out of a ropeline full of people by accident.  How much longer before a certain blogger at The Atlantic demands a paternity test to see if Joe the Plumber fathered Sarah Palin’s baby — or Bristol’s, for that matter?

There is a stench of desperation surrounding this, as if they sense defeat coming from a moment of honesty from Obama about his real intentions to institute a regime of redistribution.  They want to discredit the man who only asked the question as if he’s some political operative who magically forced Obama to sound … well, a little like a Marxist.  Why?  They want to distract people from Obama’s answer by sliming the man Obama picked at random to ask a question.

And where’s the Tanning Bed Media on this topic?  Danny Glover lays it out:

Jonathan Martin of The Politico was among the first out of the gate, with blog posts noting that Wurzelbacher, affectionately known by most of America as “Joe The Plumber,” has a tax lien against him and doesn’t have a plumber’s license. Martin conveniently forgot to mention that the law doesn’t require one.) Bloomberg also has a story on the tax lien, and AP and The Washington Post did their part to make a story out of the “unlicensed” non-story.

Expect more of the same over coming days. In fact, don’t be surprised if all of those investigative reporters sent to Alaska after John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate suddenly get reassigned to the plumber beat in flyover country. Joe The Plumber must be discredited at all costs! …

But why is it that political reporters only get curious when a conservative Joe America storms onto the scene? Why aren’t they just as curious when liberals trot out, say, a 12-year-old boy to give a national radio address?

It has been almost a year to the day since journalists dropped the ball on telling America more about Graeme Frost, the boy who made the case for sinking billions of dollars more into the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. But when Michelle Malkin and other curious conservative bloggers did the legwork the press wouldn’t, they earned the scorn of their mainstream colleagues.

Indeed.  And Joe Wurzelbacher didn’t give a speech or make a commercial.  He asked a question.  He stood on a rope line, and Obama picked him to ask it.  The Tanning-Bed Media seems to feel that they have a duty to expose every last part of Wurzelbacher’s life, but that asking Obama to explain his political partnerships with Tony Rezko and William Ayers, and his long friendship and financial support of rabid demagogues Jeremiah Wright and Michael Pfleger, are not just out of bounds but downright racist.

So what have we learned from this episode?

  1. Thou shalt not offend The One by asking him a question.  Of any kind.
  2. Anyone who questions The One will have to undergo a public pillorying of a kind unseen since the Red Scare, or perhaps the Inquisition.
  3. The Tanning-Bed Media will happily participate in any inquisition, as long as it keeps them from investigating irrelevant issues like Obama’s ties to the Chicago Machine, William Ayers, ACORN, or his record on protecting infanticide.

Don’t ask questions. Don’t check the records of people running for political office, but do check the records of those who dare violate Rule #1.  No dissent will be tolerated.  Our political and media masters have spoken.

I only ask one favor of the Left and the media: please keep this story alive for another three weeks.  I can’t wait to read Michelle’s column tomorrow.

Update & Bump: I’ve added the AOL Hot Seat Poll to this post, and bumped it to keep in near the top for today’s Top Picks.

The sad thing is, the city is still hassling him about needing a license, even though he is not self-employed, and could continue doing only residential work without one. His tax situation is probably the result of bad accounting work or some other error. We’re not talking about a lot of money, after all. But most important, Joe is not running for public office, nor is he employed by anyone who is!!! But God forbid we should demand such scrutiny of Obama’s associates, some of whom have actively worked for his rise in politics.

I don’t know and I don’t care if they made it up or not. He asked a simple question. Why does that suddenly mean he has news media up his ass? Since when? People have been talking to candidates for ever without worrying about being fired because some idiot reporter could not mind his own damn business.

To this day, Barack Obama has not answered a lot of questions put to him by the press and that is all right. After all he is only running for president.

Let this be a lesson to anyone caught on camera asking Obama a question. They might end up with people interviewing their ex.

Terrye on October 16, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Joe the Plumber will be remembered as the slow-bleeding wound that killed Obama’s campaign. I always determine how bad a hit is to a liberal by how viscous/vacuous/hypocritical their response is to a person or event that goes against their world view. Joe’s questioning Obama about the American Dream apparently was a true act of heroism. Should McCain win in November, and we avert the socialism that would be the Obama/Pelosi administration, I plan to send Joe some money to but that business and will encourage others to do the same.

The legacy media has reached a new level of shameful behavior.

Mutnodjmet on October 16, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Who needs “training” or “permits” anyway? If you hired an unlicensed plumber and he didn’t fit your pipes correctly or he made a bunch of contaminated wells or he left some pipe leaking in your basement, well then you can just hire another plumber and put more money into the economy! Or something.

You have recourse if a plumber makes contaminated wells etc. That’s silly argument, that somehow permits make everything perfect.

When I got a permit for my business I just plunked down the money and got a piece of paper that made my business legal. That’s just a bribe to the government in essence. Soaking the self-starting.

Spirit of 1776 on October 16, 2008 at 8:25 PM

I dunno. They’ve gotten away with this type of behavior with the aid of the msm for so long they think it is the norm. My god, obama and biden have been misrepresenting what he said about the 250k all day and the msm does not correct them.

Grow Fins on October 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Yeah. The dummy should have known better than to live on a street that Obama might stroll down, camera crew in tow…

Joe’s licensing issues wouldn’t have even made the small-print section on the last page of the local paper if B. Obeyme had walked through a different neighborhood. But now it is The Big Issue.

Hey MSM, isn’t there, like, and economic crisis to b!tch about?

innominatus on October 16, 2008 at 8:26 PM

This “Joe the Plumber” crusade has infuriated me to no end.

The media deigns to address the background and records of a private citizen but leaves Obama’s relations to:

- Rezko.
- Ayers.
- Auchi.
- Wright.
- ACORN.
- The Electoral Welfare he received in Michigan.
- Dem. Primary Caucus Fraud.
- And so much more…

…completely and totally untouched.

The MSM wouldn’t stop screaming about Hillary and Tuzla “sniper fire” for weeks, but when Biden does the same re: Afghanistan? Nary a peep.

Hillary was railroaded for her AUMF vote, but Biden has the same vote — nada. They’ve always been in the O-Tank, and not just against Republicans.

And now we must tar and feather a private citizen for asking a question. “He’s a corrupt Republican!” It’s the same thing we PUMAs heard about being nothing more than “Vagina Voters” at best or “Republican plants” at (not quite so) worst.

It’s absolutely sick and terrifying. No matter my complete outrage over the character attacks/smears upon Democratic women such as Ferraro and Hillary — or my doubled outrage over the “Tanning Bed” media attacks/smears of all things Palin and her family — this character assassionation and smearing of a private citizen that only asked a question of Obama set me on literal fire.

It’s so disgusting it hurts. I still want a damn response by Obama on why such a “Messiah” would accept stealing my Michigan vote for Clinton by taking four delegates from her based on “exit polls.”

Let’s stop asking about Joe Six-Pack or Joe the Plumber’s record, and let’s start asking Obama of his.

As Obama himself said to trounce Clinton in one of many debates:
“It’s one thing to be ready on day one, but it’s another to be right on day one.”

Nothing coming from Obama or his sniveling surrogates make me feel he is right in any way. shape. or form.

Johnny Mac and Sara’Cuda: fight for us. Keep fighting Obama’s lack of judgement. Take it to him. This railroading of everyone not in the O-Tank is making America angry, and we need you to fight for us.

A tax lien is not that big a deal. I was a realtor and I knew of people who had to pay them to sell property and they did not even know they were there. Or maybe they were late. None of that is the point.

The man asked a simple question, his tax status has nothing to do with that. It is his right. Even if he is working as an apprentice or whatever, there are literally millions of people like him out there often working several jobs and doing the best they can to pay their bills. They do not need to be judged by people like you.

Yes. Asking a tough question when called on is absolutely tantamount to “turning himself into Mr Model Small Businessman.” Also, owing taxes and not having a license he’s not allowed to have yet anyway should disqualify someone from questioning THE MESSIAH and invite an immediate MSM anal probe.

Your arguments are feeble and they make you look foolish. Run away little progressive.

PS. What person that asked John McCain a similarly tough question has received similar treatment? I WONDER WHY THAT WOULD BE?

TheUnrepentantGeek on October 16, 2008 at 8:37 PM

The recent attacks on “certification” or “permits” or whatever are a little scary.

I work for an airplane manufacturer. Think it would be good if all the mechanics weren’t certified?

How about your doctor?

Your broker?

Your auto mechanic?

Who needs “training” or “permits” anyway? If you hired an unlicensed plumber and he didn’t fit your pipes correctly or he made a bunch of contaminated wells or he left some pipe leaking in your basement, well then you can just hire another plumber and put more money into the economy! Or something.

e-pirate on October 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

It isn’t a binary proposition. Obviously Joe can do the job. Has he, to your knowledge, mis-fitted any pipes, or made any contaminated wells, or left any pipes leaking in the basement? I would think not, or he wouldn’t have lasted 3 years. The fact that Joe can do his job so well without having a government seal of approval demonstrates a problem with the government certification process, not a problem with Joe.

The stuff about doctors and airplane mechanics is mostly irrelevant, but both professions could significantly reduce costs – without any sacrifice in quality – by providing alternative pathways to obtaining credentials.

profitsbeard on October 16, 2008 at 8:39 PM

I guess we’ll all have to agree to disagree. There’s two ways to see this story:

ONE:
Regular guy asks Obama a question, media actively decides to destroy man’s life for asking said question. The fact that he owes back taxes is somebody else’s “accounting error.”

TWO:
Regular guy asks Obama a question last weekend. Media does not care. Then, Wednesday night, McCain mentions Joe the Plumber a dozen times, more often then he mentions say, Sarah Palin. The next day, Joe appears on Good Morning America of his own volition. McCain launches a Joe the Plumber ad. McCain turns into a thirteen year old girl who can’t wait to call Joe, saying “I’m probably going to call him this morning. I thought he would probably be up late. I heard that his — that his phone lines were pretty well flooded. But I think we’re going to be spending some time together.” Suddenly all of America is asking “wtf is Joe the Plumber” and then they get their answer: an apparently unlicensed plumber who doesn’t pay his taxes on time. Who’s actually a registered republican. And who apparently would get a tax cut under Obama’s plan. America somehow survives.

I guess it doesn’t really matter either way.

He probably has a payment plan with the IRS already. As for the license aspect, he works under a licensed contractor and is legal in that respect.

But let’s talk about you and the rest of the vermin Democrat partisans here in America. Right now, this very moment, you, Grow Fins, has no problem whatsoever participating in the character assassination of a man who dared only ask a question, one of the most sacred rights in American Democracy. And apparently you have no shame in doing so.

That makes you a bad person with a deeply flawed character.

JonPrichard on October 16, 2008 at 8:46 PM

I just made the mistake of watching the latest Obama rally on YouTube.

Where he dismisses Joe, and by proxy, middle america with “A Plumber is the guy [McCain's] fightin’ for.”

That dismissive tone. And the crowd laughed.

I just can’t take it. I’m seething.

RightOFLeft on October 16, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Honestly I’m just happy to see somebody respond without swear words, so thanks for that.

The problem is that I’ve got no idea how well Joe does his job. When most people call a plumber, I assume they don’t ask for references. And unless you’re getting help from a one man business, references don’t help a whole lot. If you call up the company Joe works for and say you need your toilet fixed, there’s no telling whether they will send you a twenty year veteran or a high school drop out who bought himself a wrench off e-bay. That’s the whole reason that some minimum quality standards have to be required for many professions like this, to protect consumers.

Also I left a typo in that prior post… I meant contaminated “welds” not “wells.” My bad.

e-pirate on October 16, 2008 at 8:48 PM

The amazing thing about a guy like Grow Fins here is that he has less problem with people like Ayers and Djorn who were not only buddies with Obama but on the FBI’s most wanted list, than he does with a working man who has a tax lien. And God forbid, he did not get his license.

You know what it takes to get a realtor’s license? A six week course and then the state test. $25 for the license and some bs continuing ed with more money to the state on a regular basis. Like most of these things, it is a racket designed to help the state rake in money.

Simple, don’t dare question The One™.

Spirit of 1776 on October 16, 2008 at 8:22 PM

Exactly! I said this in another thread about Joe after watching the clip of Obama making fun of Joe and plumbers saying something to the effect (sneeringly) that whoever heard of a plumber making $250,000. But that isn’t what Joe said. He was talking about buying a business and growing a business that might potentially making that much money and he didn’t think he should be penalized for working toward the American dream. That’s how totally of touch and synch Obama is with the average American citizen.

He stood on a rope line, and Obama picked him to ask it.

Ed, it’s even worse than that.

He didn’t stand on a rope line. According to a Toledo Blade article, he was playing football in his own yard with his son when Obama decided to do a little house to house work.

Obama came up to him.

And now it appears that he’s going to lose his job because of it.

Jimmie on October 16, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Now, I fear this Joe guy would have to leave his town, or even Ohio, in order to start his life again. With Obama as President, he probably won’t be given a job anywhere because of fear of retaliation against any potential boss of his.

“I am not going to spread YOUR wealth around Joe (like Senator Government wants to do)”
Finally we have a line to counteract the dems “tax cuts for the rich” crap.

http://www.nypost.com/php/pfriendly/print.php?url=http://www.nypost.com/seven/09172008/postopinion/editorials/step_down__charlie_129514.htm
September 17, 2008 —

Charlie Rangel must be a centipede – given how many shoes have been dropping regarding his personal finances.
Yet he’s pugnaciously defying demands that he step aside as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee – which writes the nation’s tax laws.

Rangel’s moral claim to any top leadership post became debatable in the wake of the revelations of his four rent-stabilized apartments (one of them used as a campaign office) and his failure to report $75,000 in rental income from a Caribbean beachfront villa.
And he certainly didn’t help himself with a series of astonishingly inept excuses – capped by his ham-fisted “they were all speaking Spanish” defense.

This guy is a much a tax professional as Joe Biden is a foreign policy expert.Give us a break!!!

The same people hammering Joe the Plumber for not having a license to work are the same people that want amnesty for illegals and think it is okay for illegal aliens to vote.
What un-believable hypocrisy.

The same press,I mean democratic activist, that are going through Palin’s trash and tearing down Joe here are the same
people that don’t have the time to report on the success in
Iraq,Obama’s ties to domestic terrorist that he worked with and shared a fund raiser with to jettison his political career, and question the judgment of a man that spent 20 yrs. in a racist church.

That’s all just distractions!!
Nothing to see here!!

let’s get back to the real work of tearing down the middle
class worker who dares to try and buy his own business, you know, the middle class people Obama is always telling us he
cares about unless they dare to ask him a logical question.

Maybe while that crack staff of democratic activist are doing such good investigative work, they can drum up Kerry’s
military records he promised to reveal to the public or some
of this information from their chosen one:
