What we can learn from the Joe the Plumber episode; Update: AOL Hot Seat Poll Added

posted at 11:05 pm on October 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Honestly, I’m rather surprised that Joe Wurzelbacher and his rope-line dialogue with Barack Obama has managed to stay in the news for as long as it has.  I knew when I first heard the exchange that it went badly for Obama.  I didn’t expect Joe the Plumber to be the main topic of the last presidential debate.  And I certainly didn’t expect Obama supporters to keep the story alive by their rabid character assassination of a man who did nothing more than ask a question — at random.

Now, we have people crawling over his tax records, his voter registration, his professional licensing, and whatever else they can find in the public record.  Someone has linked him to the long-deceased Charles Keating, suggesting that somehow Obama managed to pick a McCain plant out of a ropeline full of people by accident.  How much longer before a certain blogger at The Atlantic demands a paternity test to see if Joe the Plumber fathered Sarah Palin’s baby — or Bristol’s, for that matter?

There is a stench of desperation surrounding this, as if they sense defeat coming from a moment of honesty from Obama about his real intentions to institute a regime of redistribution.  They want to discredit the man who only asked the question as if he’s some political operative who magically forced Obama to sound … well, a little like a Marxist.  Why?  They want to distract people from Obama’s answer by sliming the man Obama picked at random to ask a question.

And where’s the Tanning Bed Media on this topic?  Danny Glover lays it out:

Jonathan Martin of The Politico was among the first out of the gate, with blog posts noting that Wurzelbacher, affectionately known by most of America as “Joe The Plumber,” has a tax lien against him and doesn’t have a plumber’s license. Martin conveniently forgot to mention that the law doesn’t require one.) Bloomberg also has a story on the tax lien, and AP and The Washington Post did their part to make a story out of the “unlicensed” non-story.

Expect more of the same over coming days. In fact, don’t be surprised if all of those investigative reporters sent to Alaska after John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate suddenly get reassigned to the plumber beat in flyover country. Joe The Plumber must be discredited at all costs! …

But why is it that political reporters only get curious when a conservative Joe America storms onto the scene? Why aren’t they just as curious when liberals trot out, say, a 12-year-old boy to give a national radio address?

It has been almost a year to the day since journalists dropped the ball on telling America more about Graeme Frost, the boy who made the case for sinking billions of dollars more into the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. But when Michelle Malkin and other curious conservative bloggers did the legwork the press wouldn’t, they earned the scorn of their mainstream colleagues.

Indeed.  And Joe Wurzelbacher didn’t give a speech or make a commercial.  He asked a question.  He stood on a rope line, and Obama picked him to ask it.  The Tanning-Bed Media seems to feel that they have a duty to expose every last part of Wurzelbacher’s life, but that asking Obama to explain his political partnerships with Tony Rezko and William Ayers, and his long friendship and financial support of rabid demagogues Jeremiah Wright and Michael Pfleger, are not just out of bounds but downright racist.

So what have we learned from this episode?

  1. Thou shalt not offend The One by asking him a question.  Of any kind.
  2. Anyone who questions The One will have to undergo a public pillorying of a kind unseen since the Red Scare, or perhaps the Inquisition.
  3. The Tanning-Bed Media will happily participate in any inquisition, as long as it keeps them from investigating irrelevant issues like Obama’s ties to the Chicago Machine, William Ayers, ACORN, or his record on protecting infanticide.

Don’t ask questions. Don’t check the records of people running for political office, but do check the records of those who dare violate Rule #1.  No dissent will be tolerated.  Our political and media masters have spoken.

I only ask one favor of the Left and the media: please keep this story alive for another three weeks.  I can’t wait to read Michelle’s column tomorrow.

Update & Bump: I’ve added the AOL Hot Seat Poll to this post, and bumped it to keep in near the top for today’s Top Picks.

SCREW the liberal brownshirts! Joe the plumber for President!

The Obama Administration–a combination of thugocracy and smearocracy.

Obama and his supporters have lost their souls as well as their minds.

Stand up and fight.

I tell you what I’ve learned is that we’ve tolerated this behavior from the left for too long. They burn effigies of public officials and we say it’s public officials and free speech. They go with scandalous accusations concerning Trig and we wring our hands worried about the spin from illuminating BO’s past. But now, when you go after a private citizen you’ve crossed the thin red line.

Starlink on October 16, 2008 at 7:42 PM

It is also disingenuous because MANY plumbers with small businesses will do in the neighborhood of 250,000 and they are simple schedule c filers. The “magic” of self-employment tax and AMT will hammer plumbers making as little as 75,000. Bambi better be careful or he is going to wake a LOT of small businesspeople up to the holes in his theory.

From the Toledo Blade:

Mr. Wurzelbacher’s notoriety has raised the ire of Tom Joseph, business manager for Local 50 of the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Service Mechanics, who claimed that Mr. Wurzelbacher didn’t undergo any apprenticeship training.

“When you have guys going out there with no training whatsoever, it’s a little disreputable to start with,” Mr. Joseph said. “We’re the real Joe the Plumber.”

Mr. Joseph said Mr. Wurzelbacher could only legally work in the townships, but not in any municipality in Lucas County or elsewhere in the country.

“This individual has got no schooling, no licenses, he’s never been to a training program, union or non-union, in the United States of America,” Mr. Joseph said.

The association has endorsed Barack Obama, according to Mr. Joseph.

Maybe there’s less to doing plumbing than the guild thinks there ought to be.

It is about small business owners, sorry about contractors too. McCain would gain a lot of traction with blue dogs if he preached eliminating or at least rebenchmarking the AMT. Run a non-incorporated business and have sales in the 175,000 neighborhood and *golly* your SE tax will nuke any remaining “magic tax cut” refundable credits you have….hell the real phaseout for a guy with two kids is about 65,000 dollars.

You take the 13.25% you pay to make up for not having a w-2 providing employer pay “invisible matching funds” and that’s 8612 bucks give or take extra tax….now they try to pull a Jedi mind trick and say hey we’ll let you take a modification of 4306 bucks but that comes before you calculate your MAGI…..

anyway Bambi-vision would never have helped a Joe the plumber as much as he says anyway….the machine is designed by democrats over the years to crucify small business while letting the big mega-union shops use their larger pool of wealth to weather the storm.

Cindy Munford on October 16, 2008 at 7:42 PM

It’s more than just kicks–the left is making a power play here–pure and simple. Even though Sarah Palin and her family suffered and are still suffering grievously because of the media and the left’s cruelty, this attack on an average citizen who just asked a question is far more dangerous. The media and the left could make the argument–however specious and disingenuous–that since Sarah Palin is a public official running for higher office, that her actions are open to public scrutiny, but Joe the Plumber is a different matter entirely. Here we are seeing the left, the Obama campaign, and the media in the process of launching a coordinated campaign to ruin this man’s life to quash through intimidation any form of questioning, criticism, or dissent. This is something I never thought I would see in this country. The former Soviet Union, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia–yes. But in the United States? No–never. But now we are seeing it happen here.

If Barack Obama is elected president and he has a filibuster proof Democratic Senate and a strongly Democratic House, we might not have a 2012 election–at least not a fair one–in which we can even elect a conservative candidate.

Yep. $1,800 permit fee to build a spec house in Auburn. $250 to the state licensure board if you want to take on a job over $10,000, just because a bunch of builders with friends in high places wanted to weed out the competition. Workmen’s comp laws so vague you never know if you’re getting robbed by the insurers or not because nobody can/will give you a straight answer.

AubieJon on October 16, 2008 at 8:07 PM

Had Joe stayed off on national media you would have a point.

But the moment he agreed to put his face on TV he injected himself into a national campaign, with the intention of influencing it. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, except if you’re going to do it, then you invite scrutiny and you don’t get to filter the scrutiny.

The moment Obama’s wife went in front of a microphone after her husband had announced his run, she became fair game and rightly so.

Whether Joe is a plant or not doesn’t really matter. You can’t have it both ways.

sanguine4 on October 16, 2008 at 8:08 PM

They want to distract people from Obama’s answer by sliming the man Obama picked at random to ask a question.

If you listen carefully to Diane Sawyer’s interview with him, she asks if he was contacted by the McCain camp before he spoke to Obama. She was already trying to plant seeds of doubt about his story. She is such a tired and worn old hag. I despise everything about her, the conniving POS.

Joe is the free market working. Here’s a guy that has been doing an important job for at least 3 years – without certification, and without any complaints about the service he provides. The MSM is just pissed that they did all this digging and came up with just a tax lien and some dubious licensing issues.

Kinda like the sh!tbreath that hacked Palin’s emails and found nothing. The MSM can’t seem to accept that there actually are conservatives that aren’t inbred/addicts/crooks/racists/pedophiles/etc.

sanguine:

My understanding is that this man asked Obama a question and since Obama likes to have people covering him on the campaign trail the answer ended up on TV. The idea that a man can not ask a question of a candidate without fear of having their personal business all over TV is ridiculous.

Bill O’Reilly poo-pooing “Joe the Plumber” and Laura Ingraham’s head almost exploded at his calling Obama “a stand-up guy” and slamming McCain.
O’Reilly’s head is so far up Obama’s ass that his feet don’t touch the floor.

Been reading “Liberal Fascism” by Goldberg – which has completely terrified me (thanks Jonah!). The phrase “it can’t happen here” is not true. It has happened here and we just had a demonstration of it again. This guy just got hounded into the ground.

Seriously, who is next? It is not right. It is not American. We cannot let this happen on our soil. Period.

It *has* happened here before….

The Odd Case of Jacob Maged-the tailor who charged too little

A “chiseler” was a character who violated the spirit of the Blue Eagle and the terms of the law when he charged a price below the level specified by the code in his industry. And such a villain, apparently, was Jacob Maged in Jersey City. The hapless Maged, aged forty-nine, was an immigrant who ran his own tailor shop. He had been warned once by inspectors from the government, but the second, in April 1934, the authorities decided to make an example of him. Maged was prosecuted and sent to jail for three months, leaving a wife and four daughters to struggle with the business and pay his $100 fine. And his crime? Knowingly, deliberately, Maged had charged 35 cents to press a suit for a customer, even though the code of the NRA had pegged the price at 40 cents. . . . Jacob Maged could become a criminal only under a rare set of laws, in which people in the business of dry cleaning could use the powers of law to impose penalties on their own competitors who dared to lower their prices.

Fairness Doctrine, Plus Card Check, Plus Acorn Voting.

Expect to see alot of people making $249,000 when they used to make more.

Looks to me like the Dems might be self destructing. Joe the Plumber and Murtha’s stupid comment might be just enough to swing PA and OH to McCain.

huckleberryfriend on October 16, 2008 at 8:14 PM

What have we learned from this?

That if you go up against the Left, using your Freedom of Speech, that they will use the tactics of personal destruction to go after you.

That the information flow of the internet, allows whackos to congreagate online… where they feed off each others hate. Even though they are a very small segment of society, their screaming now gets amplified by the Main Stram Media, to destroy.

Even on Fox, they have talked about Joe’s license situation.

The idea that a man can not ask a question of a candidate without fear of having their personal business all over TV is ridiculous.

Oh for Pete’s sake. What horses**t. So I guess the media made that stuff up about him owing taxes and not being a licensed plumber (as you’re required to have in Lucas County, Ohio) and, um, his taxes actually being lower under Obama’s plan. Fact is, the only person responsible for Joe’s predicament is Joe.

Grow Fins on October 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

The reality of Plumbergate for Obama is that the damage has already been done and no amount character assassination by the media will dampen its affect on the Campaign. In fact if they continue to go after Joe in such hostile fashion It could actually backfire on Obama’s campaign and the MSM because the will be seen as being petty and small by the very voters they are trying win over.

I just hope nothing happens to Joe the plumber and he survives the trial by media he is undergoing at the moment and that the McCain campaign does the right thing by this guy win or loose and helps him out the way he helped them out.

Dreadnought223 on October 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Here’s a guy that has been doing an important job for at least 3 years – without certification

RightOFLeft on October 16, 2008 at 8:09 PM

The recent attacks on “certification” or “permits” or whatever are a little scary.

I work for an airplane manufacturer. Think it would be good if all the mechanics weren’t certified?

How about your doctor?

Your broker?

Your auto mechanic?

Who needs “training” or “permits” anyway? If you hired an unlicensed plumber and he didn’t fit your pipes correctly or he made a bunch of contaminated wells or he left some pipe leaking in your basement, well then you can just hire another plumber and put more money into the economy! Or something.

e-pirate on October 16, 2008 at 8:18 PM

The sad thing is, the city is still hassling him about needing a license, even though he is not self-employed, and could continue doing only residential work without one. His tax situation is probably the result of bad accounting work or some other error. We’re not talking about a lot of money, after all. But most important, Joe is not running for public office, nor is he employed by anyone who is!!! But God forbid we should demand such scrutiny of Obama’s associates, some of whom have actively worked for his rise in politics.

his taxes actually being lower under Obama’s plan.

Go listen to the exchange. He is clearly talking about increased taxes affecting people working toward the American dream. What his taxes are today isn’t what he was talking about.
