Video: Obama hits McCain over Joe the Plumber

And with this, JTP has officially been name-checked by all four candidates today. The way the video’s cut, picking up mid-sentence, it sounds like Obama’s sneering at Wurzelbacher for being a plumber — “A plumber is the guy he’s fighting for” — to the great amusement of the crowd. The full quote:
Obama said McCain was misleading voters by proposing tax plans that favor the rich while criticizing an Obama tax plan that would raise taxes only on people making more than $250,000 a year, just 5 percent of all taxpayers.
“He’s trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he’s fighting for,” Obama said. “How many plumbers you know that are making a quarter-million dollars a year?”
They’re laughing at McCain for claiming to be a friend of the middle class, not at Wurzelbacher for being middle class. Given the Bittergate fiasco and his image as an elitist, would The One really crap on a profession as quintessentially blue-collar as plumbing in a public setting, especially with the election so close? In context, I’m not even sure that the line about making a quarter mil a year is aimed at Wurzelbacher. I take his point to be not that JTP is lying about aspiring to make that much, but that even if he succeeds, he’d be such an extreme outlier that Maverick can’t fairly use him as a proxy for plumbers (or the middle class) generally.
But judge for yourself. Whatever Obama meant, the AP’s seen to it that the dirt on JTP’s tax lien problem will be beamed out to wire services and reported around the world tomorrow. Note to self: Make sure you’re capable of passing the equivalent of a federal background check before challenging The One on his polices. Click the image to watch.
Update: Team Maverick seizes the moment:
“It’s an outrage that the Obama campaign and the media are attacking Joe the Plumber for asking a legitimate question of a presidential candidate. This is why voters still have so many questions about Barack Obama. Instead of answering tough questions, his campaign attacks average Americans for daring to look at the reality behind his words, said Tucker Bounds, spokesman the McCain-Palin campaign. “John McCain will continue to fight on behalf of all hardworking Americans like Joe for policies geared toward increasing prosperity and reducing the burden on taxpayers — not ’spreading the wealth around’ for Senator Government to distribute as he sees fit.”

I may not have stated this really well. I am a small business, I sell wine and liquor in the state of CT which is VERY liberal but my business is and will do just over 250,000 this year. Who will get my money? I may gross out for my family $45,000 up from $43K this year. I am really concerned and what about you, are you concerned?

Memo to Barack and Biden, I am a contractor and I know of several plumbing companies that do better than a quarter million a year that employ a few dozen plumbers. I am in the glass industry and my old boss with only four of us did better than a million a year. Those are the small businesses you want to tax more. I am self employed now and hope to do that well and sure as hell don’t want to give anymore of my hard earned money to you corrupt idiots in DC. Those small businesses do spread the wealth around by hiring people and buying the goods they need to do their jobs.
I am not Joe the plunber but Goat the glazier/glassman and I approve this message.

Another joke
“I also have enjoyed Bill Clinton’s all out support for the man who defeated his wife. A reporter asked Bill, if you Sen. Obama was qualified to be president. Bill said, ‘He’s a U.S. citizen over the age of 35.’”

Obama and Biden are complete jackasses. “Joe the Plumber” said in an interview that he does not, in fact, make $250K a year…but he’d like to…just like everybody else. They’re proving themselves to be even more elitist by ridiculing him and reminding us of how well off THEY are. They have no shame.

progressoverpeace on October 16, 2008 at 9:37 PM
He regards himself with a somber seriousness that admits of neither fault not foible. Such a man is incapable of laughter – either on his part or anyone else’s.
ManlyRash on October 16, 2008 at 9:37 PM
Barack is almost likable in this context.
carbon_footprint on October 16, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Here’s the issue…Small businesses making $250,000 a year. Senator Obama is incredibly stupid to start talking about who is or is not making $250,000k a year. Seriously…What is a Senator’s salary? How much does a VP of Community Relations for a hospital make? Now, how much did Sen. Obama and family report as their income last year?
There are 662,000 “small businesses” employing from “1-500″ employees that make over $250,000 a year. These are all types of businesses from plumbers to exporters to fabricators and manufacturers to e-businesses and book sellers. They employ over 4 million Americans. These are the companies that expand and create jobs. These are the backbone of the American economy.
How many plumbers Sen. Government? Obviously, none that Sen. Obama knows which is the whole point. For all his talk about knowing something about how to improve the economy with “trickle up” economics, he obviously doesn’t know a thing.
His economic policies are not about building the economy or jobs. His policies are simply about expanding the welfare class without putting more money into welfare (thus, destroying “welfare reform” which was high on everybody’s list in the 90’s), without telling people that is what he is doing and by by-passing any controls or limits by re-classifying an entire economic class as “needy”.
Senator Obama…now he thinks he knows how much each profession should make. What’s next? Along with minimum wage we get maximum wages set by the government? Now that is definitely Marxist.
Kat_Mo on October 16, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Not at all. It makes perfect sense.

progressoverpeace on October 16, 2008 at 9:39 PM
Seriously. And occasionally he’s chuckling after reading the joke in a way that indicates this is his first read through, like “hey, that’s pretty funny”. Seriously, I’ll say it again, the jokes are really not that bad, but his delivery is horrible. It’s really weird actually.

But this need to mention Fox at every opportunity is no more than a week old. It is a very odd turn, and it certainly means something about what they are worried about. I don’t think it’s effective at doing anything, but I’d like to know what the retards at BHO central think it will do.
progressoverpeace on October 16, 2008 at 9:47 PM
The McCain joke I loved was “It going to be a long night over at MSNBC if I pull this off.” That’s the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans actually have sense of humor that doesn’t involve trying to destroy someone.

The bank made a lot more money off that farm than I did, I can promise you that.
And of course there were taxes, all kinds of taxes.
Supplies, feed, seed, equipment, diesel fuel, vet bills, building supplies, plumbers, electricians for stray voltage in the barn, mechanics, and on and on and on.
By the time it got to little old me, it took an income off the farm to make ends meet.
Terrye on October 16, 2008 at 9:48 PM
As we all know, it’s not just plumbers it’s small business people everywhere. However, in this specific case, the business already grosses around $500K so depending on how much the owner pays himself and how much he nets, he’s in the neck of the woods. A little advertising, a little of the kind of salesmanship Joe already demonstrated he has, etc., and you could easily double your gross to $1M. If you net 20% (not unreasonable in a service business) and pay yourself $100K you’re making $300K a year.
