Video: Obama hits McCain over Joe the Plumber

posted at 8:49 pm on October 16, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

And with this, JTP has officially been name-checked by all four candidates today. The way the video’s cut, picking up mid-sentence, it sounds like Obama’s sneering at Wurzelbacher for being a plumber — “A plumber is the guy he’s fighting for” — to the great amusement of the crowd. The full quote:

Obama said McCain was misleading voters by proposing tax plans that favor the rich while criticizing an Obama tax plan that would raise taxes only on people making more than $250,000 a year, just 5 percent of all taxpayers.

He’s trying to suggest that a plumber is the guy he’s fighting for,” Obama said. “How many plumbers you know that are making a quarter-million dollars a year?”

They’re laughing at McCain for claiming to be a friend of the middle class, not at Wurzelbacher for being middle class. Given the Bittergate fiasco and his image as an elitist, would The One really crap on a profession as quintessentially blue-collar as plumbing in a public setting, especially with the election so close? In context, I’m not even sure that the line about making a quarter mil a year is aimed at Wurzelbacher. I take his point to be not that JTP is lying about aspiring to make that much, but that even if he succeeds, he’d be such an extreme outlier that Maverick can’t fairly use him as a proxy for plumbers (or the middle class) generally.

But judge for yourself. Whatever Obama meant, the AP’s seen to it that the dirt on JTP’s tax lien problem will be beamed out to wire services and reported around the world tomorrow. Note to self: Make sure you’re capable of passing the equivalent of a federal background check before challenging The One on his polices. Click the image to watch.

Update: Team Maverick seizes the moment:

“It’s an outrage that the Obama campaign and the media are attacking Joe the Plumber for asking a legitimate question of a presidential candidate. This is why voters still have so many questions about Barack Obama. Instead of answering tough questions, his campaign attacks average Americans for daring to look at the reality behind his words, said Tucker Bounds, spokesman the McCain-Palin campaign. “John McCain will continue to fight on behalf of all hardworking Americans like Joe for policies geared toward increasing prosperity and reducing the burden on taxpayers — not ’spreading the wealth around’ for Senator Government to distribute as he sees fit.”

Who will rid me of this troublesome plumber?

Mr. D on October 16, 2008 at 8:52 PM

The damage has been done. The Titanic is sinking. The next two weeks might just as well be 3 hours. He’s doomed.

ManlyRash on October 16, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Hey, since the Law is so interested in checking on liens on people, how about they check out how Obama got his House?

Or Charlie Rangel?

Or Christopher Dodd?

Or that woman who has 6 defaulted houses in Florida?

Nothing? No?

BKennedy on October 16, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Seeting rage.

First they came for the Hillary supporters.
Then they came for the PUMAs.
Then they came for Sarah Palin.
And now they come for the average citizens.

A disturbing trend. This exemplifies Obama’s classist nature. How anyone in the upper midwest could vote for this guy is beyond me.

lansing quaker on October 16, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Flush this crypto-Marxist elitest down the tubes.

Here’s your McCain commercial:

Clip from original interview.

Cut to Obama saying this about the plumber, and the audience laughing.

On screen – and Obama wants to fight for you?

lorien1973 on October 16, 2008 at 8:54 PM

Who cares how much he’s making? Barry you got schooled by an average American and you’re toast.

Wait, toast can be burnt… is that racist?

Obama is a total dog. You’d almost think he was running a negative campaign, wouldn’t you? And here’s the big news: now he’s campaigning against a guy who isn’t running for anything.

manwithblackhat on October 16, 2008 at 8:56 PM

I was just on a message board and they said it’s so sad what’s happening to Joe. They wouldn’t be investigating him if McCain hadn’t put him in the spotlight.

So yep. It’s all McCain’s fault.

Senator Government, the nation is on to you now.

carbon_footprint on October 16, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Somehow, the JTP story has pushed me to the edge of my tolerance for the constant lies and arrogance from Osama Obama, all of which is reflected fully by his butt-kissing media drones.

Bad enough when Obama and Biden slimed McCain and Palin — or directed their surrogates to do it for them — but to take on and attempt to injure the reputation of a private citizen who inadvertently exposed Obama’s grand game plan — “spread the wealth around” — is perilously close to criminal in my book.

Obama is a man without honor or integrity. And his followers are little, if any, better.

MrScribbler on October 16, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Oh, good.. Someone found this. What a condescending prick. This guy makes my skin crawl.
My parents owned a tractor dealership, my Dad was a mechanic. I’m sure he’d look his nose down at them.
He has NO CLUE as to who really keeps this country humming along. It isn’t the academia. It’s plumbers, mechanics, nurses, etc. What a slap in the face.
What about those union workers????

reshas1 on October 16, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Senator Government doesn’t look like a mis-spoken whopper after all.

Cardiganfox on October 16, 2008 at 8:59 PM

What outrages me is the energy the MSM spends on enemies of Sen. Gov. It is ludicrous. If they would spend 1/50th of this energy on allies of Sen. Gov., the majority of this nation would know about his corruption and Marxism.

carbon_footprint on October 16, 2008 at 9:00 PM

That McCain response is GOLD. He really needs to saturate battleground markets with that sentiment–no, those exact words–over the next few days.

Obama–actually, his press surrogates–really stepped in it with this.

Well isn’t it true that Joe is the type that lives in a Red county and probably shops at Walmart and Obama’s guy lives in a beach front home in Marin county and shops at Wild Oats for organic crap. Look at a 2004 county map of the election, not the state map and see the income difference between Red and Blue counties. Only exception is heavily black areas.

You are bending over backward to be generous.

This was a twofer. He takes a shot at McCain while discrediting Joe. Seriously, for a guy that comments on Obama being a skilled politician, I am surprised at you. Obama excels at these sort of things. Note the lipstick bit, the flipping off Hillary bit. Either of those two can be spun by the willing to say Obama didn’t mean the insult, but the reaction of the crowds in both show clearly the double meaning was absorbed (and appreciated).

Spirit of 1776 on October 16, 2008 at 9:01 PM

That is probably the most elitist and snobish performance by The One that I’ve ever seen :|

He’s lost Ohio now. One thing you can say for Ohio is they are loyal to their own. They are the most ardent of NFL fans and the Ohio State Buckeyes are feverishly followed.
Point is they will rally behind Plumber Joe.

As for PA. Murtha sealed the state for McCain with one sentence. Not sure Obama didn’t much earlier with his clinging to guns and religion speech to the S.F. money people last winter.

Obama’s chickens are coming home to roost in those states.

We need a Florida gaffe now.

Hey, since Joe’s address is already been put out there by the Obama Red Guards, how about taking half of that campaign donation you were going to send the RNC and sending it to him with a big “thank you” for helping expose our Dear Leader?

And if you’re nearby, drop it off in cash. Then it can’t be taxed ;)

Hannibal Smith on October 16, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Given the Bittergate fiasco and his image as an elitist, would The One really crap on a profession as quintessentially blue-collar as plumbing in a public setting, especially with the election so close?

Of course he would, as long as he didn’t think cameras were rolling, because that’s the true Barry. He’s a terrorist befriending, black-power type, socialist, elitist, lying SOB, and it’s silly that he’s even in this race. Just think about all the scandal and shady characters surrounding him, his policies (when he ever mentions them), and his experience. Now pretend he’s a Republican. He wouldn’t even have the slightest of political careers. Hell, even if he was a white Democrat he probably wouldn’t be anyone either.

At any rate, I agree with you, Allah, I don’t think he was attacking the profession of plumbing in the clip… But I have no doubt he and his cocktail party pals do mock the middle class with regularity. Hell, we all heard how he talks to his rich pals at fund raisers when he doesn’t realize he is being recorded. Which is yet another example of something that would prevent him from any political career, had the race rolls been switched. Imagine McCain mocking inner city blacks for being lazy welfare leeches. Yeah, you get my point. I just can’t get over the shocking absurdity that he is likely our next president. I mean, even if McCain wins, that doesn’t erase the fact that we were so close to having this shameful human being leading the free world.

spmat on October 16, 2008 at 9:04 PM

I want to go on the record of saying I have no problem with “spreading the wealth around” as long as it’s accompanied with mass reductions in government… I really don’t see much of a difference between corporatism and socialism… as long as there is great indifferences in power(money is a big part of this) there will be big bureaucracies trying to manage us… the republican party is going to have to go anti-corporate and anti-government…

So what’s the point here?? What’s he trying to say??? It matters how you get over the magical $250 Rib enemy of the state mark?? He says a plumber won’t make it there, but if he thinks a plumbing businesscan’t make it there, he’s every bit as stupid as he appears to be…

What needs to happen is the media needs to be vetted.

We need to dig into their taxes, their private life, their investments, their divorces, their liens, their hairdressers. We need to make their lives so over-exposed that Britney is just a by-word.

I’ve seen Boston fans first hand and they have nothing on Ohioans. There’s a reason Columbus was recently named the best sports city in the country.

Wait a second. Didn’t Obama pick this guy on his little trip through Ohio? Didn’t Joe ask a perfectly reasonable question? Didn’t Obama answer the question?

So Obama is really going to blame Joe the Plumber for the fame Joe has because of a Q&A time initiated by Obama himself? Really? Really?

Barack Obama is a jerk for doing this and an idiot for attacking a guy who asked him a question. It’s hardly Joe the Plumber’s fault that Obama’s a moron.

Obama hates JTP for the same reasons he hates Palin: a “typical White person” who has the plainspoken temerity to not bow and scrape before ET (sorry, The One).

Obama has shown a propensity for rage spirals where his statements cause him a world of trouble. We are witnessing the start of a much-welcome spiral.
