Good news: Toledo moves to shut down Joe the Plumber

Look on the bright side. The media’s finally starting to vet acquaintances of Barack Obama.

Wurzelbacher registered as an apprentice with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in November 2003, according to Dennis Evans, spokesman with the Department of Job and Family Services. Records show his training, which was sponsored by A & W Newell Co. of Toledo, should have been wrapped last year.

“We don’t have a record of completion,” Evans said. “All we know is that he registered in the program and has gone through to the point where we should have record of completion, but we don’t.”

And that’s not the only record that’s missing from Wurzelbacher’s file. He doesn’t have a plumbing license required by the city of Toledo to practice, according to a staffer with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher, who now works for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., said the owner, Al Newell, has a plumbing license and that “because he works for someone else, he doesn’t need a license.”

But even that’s not true, according to the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher can’t legally do plumbing work without a license, regardless of his boss’s certification.

A staff person with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection told On Call this afternoon that her division will contact Wurzelbacher to notify him that he can’t work without a license.

“We’re trying to track him down,” she said.

Also revealed: His boss’s business probably doesn’t bring in anywhere near $250,000 a year so he should stop dreaming about turning it into one that does and what that might mean for his taxes. Which should be easy enough; he’ll probably be out of work soon anyway. Should have known better than to ask a media darling a tough question before your affairs were in order, Joe. Exit question: The law’s the law and it is, after all, his own fault for not having the papers he needs. If, say, an illegal alien had asked McCain a tough question and some righty media source responded by bringing his status to light, would the left feel the same way?

I am leanin your way Classic. I am gettin pissed at nice. Pissed at listening to a bunch of fools and being told they are smart or enlightened or even close to intelligent.

Its’ my damn money, I earned it and I’m not givin it up to a batch of lazy, halfwit, dope smokin, alcohol abusing, babymakers, sittin around all day and stealin all night jerkwads, with their pants around their knees, darin anyone to say anything about it.
Redistribute your own wealth and your pointy headed liberal college professor friends, and elitist media whores wealth and leave me the hell alone. I gave enough in the last three weeks because of failed, liberal, affirmative action policies and Dems meddling in the free market system.

I AM JOE THE PLUMBER AND I AM GETTIN PISSED OFF! SPARTICUS INDEED!

dhunter on October 16, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Folks, the plumbing business my uncle bought wasn’t worth $250K per year either… until he built it up to that. Duh! When my plumber uncle passed on, he left- through his hard work- a business worth $20 million.

Joe has ambition, is well spoken and thoughtful. And he’ll be crucified for that. Its that what we face in the next administration?

Yes, he needs to pay his taxes; but he is working on that and is not dodging it or looking for a handout.

michaelo on October 16, 2008 at 10:47 PM

I want a place to donate to Joe The Plumber! I will give more to Joe than 0Bomber gave to his brother down there in kenya living in a 6′ x 8′ hut, living on $12.00 per year.

Help Rush, set this up and we’ll send it in!

This is truly pathetic. But as has been said already, just wait for the Messiah to be in office. Better watch what you say…you know they monitor these boards. It’s just a matter of time until people begin disappearing to the gulags.

Go back to Joe’s original question. Joe and Obama were talking “revenues” of a business not Joe’s take home pay. It’s a shame that instead of addressing the issues raised, the left has decided to attack the messenger.

katablog.com on October 16, 2008 at 9:56 PM

A shame, yes, but not exactly a surprise.

McCain should do a “we are Joe the Plumber” ad. Feature a wide assortment of average folks, all ages and backgrounds, men and women, saying “I am Joe the Plumber, and I have a question for Senator Obama…” and let fly with the questions Dear Leader will never answer:

… why did you spend twenty years in a racist church?

… why do you think you have the right to seize the earnings of free men and women to “spread the wealth?”

… why did you lie to the American people about your relationship with the unapologetic terrorist William Ayers?

… why did you support the massive voter fraud organization known as ACORN, now being investigated in a dozen states by the FBI?

… why did you vote ‘present’ on the bill that could have prevented the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac crisis? Why did you take so much money from them?

… why couldn’t you name even one federal spending program you would cut, after you had two different chances in two debates?

… why do you accuse everyone who asks you a tough question of being a racist?

… why did you blame the mortgage crisis on the free market, instead of the Democrat senators who caused it? Why won’t you call for them to resign? Why do you blame *everything* on the free market?

End it with a title card that says, “We are ALL Joe the Plumber.”

Doctor Zero on October 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM

You guys keep blaming Obama for this but he asked the question of Obama sveral days ago, it didn’t gain scrutiny until McCain attempted to turn the guy into a generic everyman during the debate.

Typhonsentra on October 16, 2008 at 8:06 PM

Seems to me ObamAcorn was spinning about Joe just as much as McCain.

Does having his name mentioned mean he livelihood should be ruined?

Just like surrendercrats. A hard working, blue-collar American gets ruined because his speech was wrong, yet a domestic terrorist who wished he had done more gets a pass.

AllahP, you really gotta start holding back on the snark, at least on the big headlines. HotAir is being absolutely trashed over at FR by people who only read the headlines before firing up their keyboards. They think you are running a new branch of KOS or something.

If someone can’t identify the sarcasm in this headline … whoa!

progressoverpeace on October 16, 2008 at 11:59 PM

Call me a troll, democrat plant or whatever but Joe seriously has two issues here:

1.) The guy owes 1,200 in back taxes

2.) He DOESN’T have a plumbers license

He really should have thought about at least item #1 before asking Obama about his TAX PLAN!

I mean seriously I hate paying taxes (or more properly I should say them being withheld from my pay) but I at least file to see what I owe and would pay whatever I am required to by law. I have no problem with helping him get the roaches off his front lawn but I will not help him with money for things he should have already done himself as a responsible adult.

Seriously guys we’re conservatives here (or are at least supposed to be). I can guaran-damn-tee you that if your tax money was being given to someone (in the form of a welfare check) to get a license after falsely representing himself as say a licensed home contractor (which is illegal in my locality) you would overwhelmingly object.

I agree with the point Joe made in his original comments and his later comments on Fox News & PMSNBC but my agreement doesn’t mean I’ll help him out of a sewer he slipped into (pun intended)

I dunno about that… Even some of the regulars here regularly misconstrue some of Allah’s headlines and subtext. Someties I even have to re-read things to figure out if it is just ’schtick’, the throes of despair, or an honest, straightforward analysis or opinion.

Someone NOT in the know about who founded HotAir; who runs it, and that the vast majority of us are slightly to super conservative could easily misconstrue things if they are are as superficial as most people are.

LegendHasIt on October 17, 2008 at 1:07 AM

SgtSVJones on October 17, 2008 at 12:34 AM

What the he77?
Where is it documented that Joe represented himself as a licensed contractor or that he is getting taxpayer money to get a license?

The same sort of claims are being made by people at FR, but so far no documentation of it, just innuendo, for whatever reason.

And as to the tax situation, the records showing that he owes taxes does not mean he is a tax cheat.

Several years ago, it turned out that I was quite a few thousand dollars in arrears on some property taxes. Only because the escrow company didn’t pass on the money that they were supposed to. I had to sue the escrow company to get it cleared and that took over a year.

A divorce or probate situation could cause a tax lien.

An error in an assessment could cause a tax lien, if the assessment was under protest/litigation.

And you certainly don’t expect the ‘0bamedia’ to pass on any potentially exculpatory details about someone they are trying to smear, even if they are aware of them, which is not all that likely, since they were only looking for dirt, not truth.

LegendHasIt on October 17, 2008 at 1:23 AM

And I always pay my taxes late. Too bad. They get their money and then some. It doesn’t make me a scoff law or a dead beat. Shove it, Sarge.

Blake on October 17, 2008 at 1:42 AM

SgtSVJones on October 17, 2008 at 12:34 AM

You’re missing the point.

1. I owe in taxes. That simply means I paid out over installments because I couldn’t drop a couple grand in April.

2. He’s not asking anyone to pay his taxes for him or asking for money for his license.

3. The government isn’t taking anyone’s money to pay for his taxes or license.

4. Conservatives are, survey after survey, the more charitable of the two ideologies. We give because we want to, not because we are forced to. This man has asked for nothing, and we have offered help in order to make things easier for someone who would not have had these things become public knowledge if not for the fact that he questioned some Marxist prick in a suit from Chicago.

MadisonConservative on October 17, 2008 at 1:58 AM

I love Joe the Plumber. His license doesn’t matter. Nothing about Joe matters except he asks the exact question that Barack Obama shouldn’t have answered.

The only thing about Joe the plumber that matters is that he is absolutely correct when he says Obama’s tax plan is socialism. The other important fact is that it isn’t what Joe says that is so important, it’s what Obama said. That’s why they can try and try and try to ruin Joe but it won’t matter.

Obama made a huge blunder and that will NEVER go away. I don’t want my hard earned money to be “spread” to others, DO YOU?

SayWhat on October 17, 2008 at 2:04 AM

Well, Mccain should make this an issue on the campaign trail. Tell America that Obama would not even spare an average man who would challenge him. reveal the trappigns of the coming fascism.

I am praying for Joe. Hope he survives this storm. Doesn’t the media have any shame at all anymore? Even CNBC, the supposed business channel, was laughing at him. I got so disgusted at them.

SgtSVJones on October 17, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I appreciate the link. There are many reasons a lien can be placed on someone’s house–simply having one doesn’t make a person a tax cheat. If Joe the Plumber were a tax cheat, we’d see him owing much more than $1200.

It is outrageous that the Left tries to destroy anyone who disagrees with them, and that the media is complicit through their silence. Conservatives need to rally around the Left’s targets and show the stark contrast between the two ideologies.

DrMagnolias on October 17, 2008 at 5:14 AM

I can see an independent advertisement coming out.

“Obama supporters stifle criticism by getting in your face. If that fails they suggest the state prosecuters will come after you, they will sue you in civil court and suggest to the Justice Department that you be investigated. Then if all else fails they go after your livelihood. Just imagine what your rights will be if Obama gets elected.

OK, I don’t answer you directly very often Allah, but I have to do so this time.

Your own quote points out several things that are not in line with what you are saying. I will bet dollars to donuts that A & W Newell Co. of Toledo is giving Joe his information about what needs to be done concerning his apprenticeship.

How much you want to bet that his boss did not file the papers to complete his apprenticeship. You do realize that Joe is not the one that does that. His employer/sponsor does that.

So why do you think that is? You think that maybe his boss does not want to pay Joe the higher wages he would command when his apprenticeship ends? So his boss neglects to tell Joe that his apprenticeship period should have ended months ago. His boss also tells Joe that he does not need a license and can operate under his so that Joe does not get the authorities involved.

I think you are putting an awful lot on Joe that can very easily be the fault of his employer/sponsor. In fact, I bet you that Joe is as surprised to find out these things as we are. Keep on top of this Allah, I would like to know if my read on this is correct.

mubando on October 17, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Obama’s Campaign Treasurer has multiple liens against him–that is relevant.

Joe the Plumber is NOT a drone, but a very busy worker bee who lives under the burden of legislated expenses that out weigh his income. Whatever lien will be paid in due time because Joe the Plumber pays his taxes and raises his family responsibly.

JOE THE PLUMBER as the apprentice is legally unable to submit the paperwork to the union or school; THAT submission of paperwork is the responsibility of the certified plumber to whom “Joe” is apprenticed. That the employer is so lax in his business responsibilities is what critics should realize. Perhaps this is a reason the employer wants to sell his business; he just isn’t maintaining the required paperwork to be completely above board and needs to bail out. Don’t blame the apprentice because it is the professional involved at fault, not the apprentice. And there is no way for the apprentice to submit his own “grades” to the governing board, be it a union or school.

For a lawyer to blame an apprentice shows an hole in studies.

It is not Joe the Apprentice’s fault!

According to the law, the apprentice is apprenticed to the one whose fault it is for not having submitted the papers for his apprentice.

I don’t get this…

He really should have thought about at least item #1 before asking Obama about his TAX PLAN!

If the guy is being taxed so much now, that he can’t pay his taxes, how is Obama’s plan going to help him? Obama told this guy that he wanted to take Joe’s money, and spread it around to other people. So Joe will owe more in back taxes, but that’s OK with Barry, because someone else doesn’t have enough.

More energy and time has spent on Joe than all of Obama’s mentors, idols, political allies combined. And, you can tear down Joe all you want, but the answer to his questions is still valid and should still be discussed.

Joe could have been asking a hypothetical question and wanted to personify it in his ambition. Obama should know a lot about ambition and taking credit for things he had no hand in.

Anyways, Obama answered a question from a Marxist viewpoint and that is what we should be discussing.
