Good news: Toledo moves to shut down Joe the Plumber

Look on the bright side. The media’s finally starting to vet acquaintances of Barack Obama.

Wurzelbacher registered as an apprentice with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in November 2003, according to Dennis Evans, spokesman with the Department of Job and Family Services. Records show his training, which was sponsored by A & W Newell Co. of Toledo, should have been wrapped last year.

“We don’t have a record of completion,” Evans said. “All we know is that he registered in the program and has gone through to the point where we should have record of completion, but we don’t.”

And that’s not the only record that’s missing from Wurzelbacher’s file. He doesn’t have a plumbing license required by the city of Toledo to practice, according to a staffer with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher, who now works for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., said the owner, Al Newell, has a plumbing license and that “because he works for someone else, he doesn’t need a license.”

But even that’s not true, according to the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher can’t legally do plumbing work without a license, regardless of his boss’s certification.

A staff person with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection told On Call this afternoon that her division will contact Wurzelbacher to notify him that he can’t work without a license.

“We’re trying to track him down,” she said.

Also revealed: His boss’s business probably doesn’t bring in anywhere near $250,000 a year so he should stop dreaming about turning it into one that does and what that might mean for his taxes. Which should be easy enough; he’ll probably be out of work soon anyway. Should have known better than to ask a media darling a tough question before your affairs were in order, Joe. Exit question: The law’s the law and it is, after all, his own fault for not having the papers he needs. If, say, an illegal alien had asked McCain a tough question and some righty media source responded by bringing his status to light, would the left feel the same way?

Anonymity is a wonderful thing. That’s all I’m saying. Youtube account set to a generic e-mail account, and a campaign that begins from it would be hard to trace. Let em run in circles over that, the bastards.

Regardless, we SHOULD be picking fights with these people, because we HAVE the means to get our message out.

TheUnrepentantGeek on October 16, 2008 at 7:17 PM

3) either have been a tradesperson in the type of licensed trade for which the application is filed for not less than five years immediately prior to the date the application is filed

Wurzelbacher registered as an apprentice with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in November 2003, according to Dennis Evans, spokesman with the Department of Job and Family Services.

Emphasis added.

Kind of hard for the guy to be licensed when he hasn’t quite made this requirement. Looks like he’s eligible in a few weeks. Not that you’ll hear this distinction from anyone attacking him.

This is insane.

AP, the premise of this statement is horrifying. Should anyone who dares asksa politician a question during an election year be automatically subjected to intense media scrutiny? Shame on the news media for their destructive practices! Shame on them for enabling just the kind of fascist speech suppression that they constantly imply is a Republican trait!

And who knows what it takes to be a tradesperson.

jim m on October 16, 2008 at 7:09 PM

My point exactly. Again, here are Ohio’s rules for licensing Plumbers:
LICENSE QUALIFICATION PROCESS
The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (O.C.I.L.B.), Department of Commerce, Division of Industrial Compliance, issues state commercial licenses to the following contractors: electrical, HVAC, hydronics, plumbing, and refrigeration. To receive a state license, an applicant must meet the following requirements: 1) be at least 18 years of age; 2) be a United States citizen or a legal alien-must provide proof of being a legal alien; 3) either have been a tradesperson in the type of licensed trade for which the application is filed for not less than five years immediately prior to the date the application is filed, currently be a registered engineer in this state with three years of business experience in the construction industry in the trade for which the engineer is applying to take the examination, or have other experience acceptable to the appropriate section of the board; 4) not have been convicted of or plead guilty to a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or of any felony; 5) pass the examination in the trade; 6) carry minimum $500,000 contractor liability coverage; 7) pay the applicable fees.

I believe that Joe said that he had been working as a plumber for many years….

tru2tx on October 16, 2008 at 7:01 PM

The sad thing is, this is not something that came out of nowhere and manifested itself in Obama. This is the logical evolution of where the left has been taking us for decades. And like the proverbial frog we have been sitting in the pot while the heat has gradually been turned up.
Yes, the task at hand is to defeat Obama, but once it is done, we must all work harder at getting ourselves, and our institutions out of the pot. Because if we don’t, next election will be even harder, and more dangerous. And sooner or latter we will reach the point of no return and, as they say over at AoSHQ, we’ll be ah…cooked.

He said he was a plumber, did he mention a license, he never mentioned that he owned his own business…he said that was his goal.
So you are calling him a liar, based on what?

right2bright on October 16, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Calm down — I’m on your side here! The point I was trying to make was that Obama has lied time and again about a multitude of things, from his relationships to what he’s done as a politician. The MSM can’t or won’t lift a finger to check Obama’s facts yet this average guy from main street America gets more scrutiny in a 24 hour span than a presidential candidate who’s been campaigning for almost 2 years! It’s very troubling that Obama is very close to being elected and most people can’t get past the pretty face and platitudes that eminate from the so-called “messiah”.

I hope Joe finds the success he wants and seems willing to work for. As someone said before, I am “Joe the plumber”.

Obama still wants to take someone’s money and give it to someone else. Indeed, he wants to give $845 billion to the UN under his Global Poverty Act.

I’d probably “benefit” from Obama’s “tax cut,” but I’m not entitled to it. Besides, little else (if anything) of his agenda appeals to me. And would rather die than support a candidate who’s associated with Acorn and those despicable people who have smeared Palin and her family and now Joe the Plumber.

This is why his time with Ayers on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge is critical. When given other people’s money, Obama devotes it to cockamamie purposes thinking that he knows better.

Screw him.

City licenses are crap. Just a way to collect a fee from anyone who wants to do business there.

Now the Democrat blogs are trashing this everyday person like they have Gov. Palin.
Guess that’ll teach this guy or anybody else that dares to speak.

But let a Chicago uber liberal politician show up with a blank resume and he can run all the way through an election and become Pres. and the media vetting process includes a smiley face and even things that would completely disqualify a Republican, barely scratch the media surface.

Late to the “game” here. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it a plumber’s convention that brought Nixon down?

Rovin on October 16, 2008 at 7:48 PM

I’ll be interested to see how this plays out, because I suspect this isn’t an entirely accurate report.

They talk about him being an apprentice… When you’re an apprentice, you still do the same work (for the most part), because you need a certain number of hours and classes completed before you can take a test and get licensed… at least that’s how it worked for my brother who is an electrician. For the first 4 years, he was an apprentice. He pretty much did the same stuff, and took classes a couple nights a week. Then he took the test to become a licensed (journeyman) electrician. Then after 2 years of being a licensed electrician (and working in that capacity) he was able to take the Master Electrician test.

Now, I suspect the details, classes, time periods, may be different in different states and for different trades… But from the report it sounds like he works for a plumbing company, as would any apprentice, but isn’t licensed because he hasn’t completed the necessary requirements yet, or possibly just hasn’t taken the test.

I don’t know, but that report just sounds inaccurate to say that he can’t work unless he’s licensed. How the hell does anyone ever get the apprentice program complete if they can’t work before being licensed?

RightWinged on October 16, 2008 at 7:48 PM

I imagine the Obama campaign is catching on by now that this could be a killer and are busy scrubbing. If someone has the video better put it somewhere safe. Obamagoons will be working hard to defuse this.

It’ll be more like the Titanic, insofar as he’s already struck the iceberg. In that case, let’s celebrate!

The disdain is dripping from the word plumber. The fact is, I believe Joe said he wanted to buy a business and hoped to be in the $250,000 bracket and that Obama’s tax plan would greatly hurt him. He was talking about a business making that much money, not him alone. That just proves that he does not listen and it also proves what an elitist he is.

Glynn on October 16, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Wow…wonder when people like Joe will just be disappeared, like good ole Mother Russia. I think this incident deserves a rousing chorus of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvxiG56M-eU

We’re still going to need enough votes to cover the hundreds of thousands of fraudulent that ACORN will be delivering.

Allah is waiting for the latest CBS/NY Times poll that has Obama in the lead with a fully locked 87%. That one should be out tomorrow AM.
