Good news: Toledo moves to shut down Joe the Plumber

Look on the bright side. The media’s finally starting to vet acquaintances of Barack Obama.

Wurzelbacher registered as an apprentice with the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in November 2003, according to Dennis Evans, spokesman with the Department of Job and Family Services. Records show his training, which was sponsored by A & W Newell Co. of Toledo, should have been wrapped last year.

“We don’t have a record of completion,” Evans said. “All we know is that he registered in the program and has gone through to the point where we should have record of completion, but we don’t.”

And that’s not the only record that’s missing from Wurzelbacher’s file. He doesn’t have a plumbing license required by the city of Toledo to practice, according to a staffer with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher, who now works for Newell Plumbing & Heating Co., said the owner, Al Newell, has a plumbing license and that “because he works for someone else, he doesn’t need a license.”

But even that’s not true, according to the Toledo Division of Building Inspection. Wurzelbacher can’t legally do plumbing work without a license, regardless of his boss’s certification.

A staff person with the Toledo Division of Building Inspection told On Call this afternoon that her division will contact Wurzelbacher to notify him that he can’t work without a license.

“We’re trying to track him down,” she said.

Also revealed: His boss’s business probably doesn’t bring in anywhere near $250,000 a year so he should stop dreaming about turning it into one that does and what that might mean for his taxes. Which should be easy enough; he’ll probably be out of work soon anyway. Should have known better than to ask a media darling a tough question before your affairs were in order, Joe. Exit question: The law’s the law and it is, after all, his own fault for not having the papers he needs. If, say, an illegal alien had asked McCain a tough question and some righty media source responded by bringing his status to light, would the left feel the same way?

Barack Obama: Destroying America, one plumber at a time.

it doesn’t change what obama said…no matter how much he wants it.

This on Special Report:

Mort Kondracke is pathetically attempting to slander Joe by revealing *gasp* that Joe dared to be a registered Republican who *brace yourselves kids* voted in the Republican primary.

I thought Charles was going to crawl across the table/counter and throttle him, he was leaning so far over when Mort was talking.

Y-not on October 16, 2008 at 6:46 PM

But Charles connected all the points. And Nina jumped in for McCain too. At the end, Hume seemed as if he was going to challenge Mort to a few rounds in the Octagon.

Seriously, Joe asked the right question, and Obama revealed who he is.

Hey, the news is that McCain is starting to talk about two Dem houses and Obama. Good point.

BuckeyeSam on October 16, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Folks, the backlash in favor of Joe is going to be massive, he’s never going to be wanting for work again, and this will hurt Obama.

This will turn out for the good. They got him too late. He already was doing interviews and showing himself to be a good guy.

Joe the Plumber may also not be able to vote, if the required purge of the voting records happens:

Joe Wurzelbacher doesn’t immediately turn up in the Ohio voter registration database, leading to some speculation last night that he’s not registered to vote.

But the Toledo Blade reports that he appears to be a registered Republican, and a primary voter at that:

Linda Howe, executive director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, said a Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher, whose address and age match Joe the Plumber’s, registered in Lucas County on Sept. 10, 1992. He voted in his first primary on March 4, 2008, registering as a Republican.

Ms. Howe said that the name may be misspelled in the database.

(This is, incidentally, the reason people worry about purging the voter rolls. They’re such a mess to begin with.)”

AP, the premise of this statement is horrifying. Should anyone who dares asksa politician a question during an election year be automatically subjected to intense media scrutiny? Shame on the news media for their destructive practices! Shame on them for enabling just the kind of fascist speech suppression that they constantly imply is a Republican trait!

This is just evil.

AP,

You are equating not having a license to being an illegal immigrant? You’re kidding right?

Big deal, so he goes and pays a fee to get the license.

End of story, except it underscores overregulation of certain types of services.

What do you bet, the Dems control who gets those licenses.

Stop walking into these traps would you.

Well, no, of course they wouldn’t.

This is disgusting, whoever it was that went out of their way to check up on this guy to get the “dirt”.

We don’t know where this guy’s paperwork is, or whether he is at fault or whether it’s “lost in the system” somewhere (it happens). We don’t know yet.

We do know that he does indeed reside in Ohio, and therefore if he is registered to vote there, then he is legally registered.

We do NOT know that about the 200,000 ACORN registrants Brunner is trying to make sure get their vote.

Obambi’s entire Ohio operation stinks to high heaven.

This reeks of Obama, here is a guy with a dream an American dream to own a business someday and make 250k, Hell it’s my dream too.

Not only are they hurting Joe, they are hurting his son. If they are going to do this to Joe then do it to the rest of those skilled laborers who do not possess a license.

Lets see how well that sits with them. I am sure some of them are thinking that. People who share common interests usually stand together, at least in my neck of the woods we do.

This is uncalled for though I love the comments this is the turn of the tide of what is yet to happen. Joe will be another person on the unemployment line, more tax payers money for being a hard working man.

It’s a shame that he lied about his experience and wasn’t qualified to be what he claimed to be. Then I must be reading this wrong because I think Joe could make the case that he is “Qualified to be licensed” but has not taken the test yet. If he cant “pratice” as a plumber withouth a liscense then why do Ohio’s own rules NOT preclude experience as a plumber as an option for being allowed to take the test and become licensed. Here is what it says:

LICENSE QUALIFICATION PROCESS
The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (O.C.I.L.B.), Department of Commerce, Division of Industrial Compliance, issues state commercial licenses to the following contractors: electrical, HVAC, hydronics, plumbing, and refrigeration. To receive a state license, an applicant must meet the following requirements: 1) be at least 18 years of age; 2) be a United States citizen or a legal alien-must provide proof of being a legal alien; 3) either have been a tradesperson in the type of licensed trade for which the application is filed for not less than five years immediately prior to the date the application is filed, currently be a registered engineer in this state with three years of business experience in the construction industry in the trade for which the engineer is applying to take the examination, or have other experience acceptable to the appropriate section of the board; 4) not have been convicted of or plead guilty to a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or of any felony; 5) pass the examination in the trade; 6) carry minimum $500,000 contractor liability coverage; 7) pay the applicable fees.

Nelsa on October 16, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Geez, already the media is digging deeper into this private citizen’s background than they ever dug into The One’s background.

Having a license is a stupid government requirement, not the same as being an illegal alien.

So Plumber Joe embelished his job hmmmm

Barack Obama Embellishes His Resume
July 9th, 2005

[by Dan Armstrong]

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a big fan of Barack Obama, the Illinois freshman senator and hot young Democratic Party star. But after reading his autobiography, I have to say that Barack engages in some serious exaggeration when he describes a job that he held in the mid-1980s. I know because I sat down the hall from him, in the same department, and worked closely with his boss. I can’t say I was particularly close to Barack – he was reserved and distant towards all of his co-workers – but I was probably as close to him as anyone. I certainly know what he did there, and it bears only a loose resemblance to what he wrote in his book.

Here’s Barack’s account:

Eventually a consulting house to multinational corporations agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe. As far as I could tell I was the only black man in the company, a source of shame for me but a source of considerable pride for the company’s secretarial pool.

First, it wasn’t a consulting house; it was a small company that published newsletters on international business. Like most newsletter publishers, it was a bit of a sweatshop. I’m sure we all wished that we were high-priced consultants to multinational corporations. But we also enjoyed coming in at ten, wearing jeans to work, flirting with our co-workers, partying when we stayed late, and bonding over the low salaries and heavy workload.

Barack worked on one of the company’s reference publications. Each month customers got a new set of pages on business conditions in a particular country, punched to fit into a three-ring binder. Barack’s job was to get copy from the country correspondents and edit it so that it fit into a standard outline. There was probably some research involved as well, since correspondents usually don’t send exactly what you ask for, and you can’t always decipher their copy. But essentially the job was copyediting.

It’s also not true that Barack was the only black man in the company. He was the only black professional man. Fred was an African-American who worked in the mailroom with his son. My boss and I used to join them on Friday afternoons to drink beer behind the stacks of office supplies. That’s not the kind of thing that Barack would do. Like I said, he was somewhat aloof.

… as the months passed, I felt the idea of becoming an organizer slipping away from me. The company promoted me to the position of financial writer. I had my own office, my own secretary; money in the bank. Sometimes, coming out of an interview with Japanese financiers or German bond traders, I would catch my reflection in the elevator doors—see myself in a suit and tie, a briefcase in my hand—and for a split second I would imagine myself as a captain of industry, barking out orders, closing the deal, before I remembered who it was that I had told myself I wanted to be and felt pangs of guilt for my lack of resolve.

If Barack was promoted, his new job responsibilities were more of the same – rewriting other people’s copy. As far as I know, he always had a small office, and the idea that he had a secretary is laughable. Only the company president had a secretary. Barack never left the office, never wore a tie, and had neither reason nor opportunity to interview Japanese financiers or German bond traders.

Then one day, as I sat down at my computer to write an article on interest-rate swaps, something unexpected happened…. I had never met this half sister; we had written only intermittently. …[several pages on his suffering half-sister] …a few months after Auma called, I turned in my resignation at the consulting firm and began looking in earnest for an organizing job.

What Barack means here is that he got copy from a correspondent who didn’t understand interest rate swaps, and he was trying to make sense out of it.

All of Barack’s embellishment serves a larger narrative purpose: to retell the story of the Christ’s temptation. The young, idealistic, would-be community organizer gets a nice suit, joins a consulting house, starts hanging out with investment bankers, and barely escapes moving into the big mansion with the white folks. Luckily, an angel calls, awakens his conscience, and helps him choose instead to fight for the people.

Like I said, I’m a fan. His famous keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention moved me to tears. The Democrats – not to mention America – need a mixed-race spokesperson who can connect to both urban blacks and rural whites, who has the credibility to challenge the status quo on issues ranging from misogynistic rap to unfair school funding.

And yet I’m disappointed. Barack’s story may be true, but many of the facts are not. His larger narrative purpose requires him to embellish his role. I don’t buy it. Just as I can’t be inspired by Steve Jobs now that I know how dishonest he is, I can’t listen uncritically to Barack Obama now that I know he’s willing to bend the facts to his purpose.

Once, when I applied for a marketing job at a big accounting firm, my then-supervisor called HR to say that I had exaggerated something on my resume. I didn’t agree, but I also didn’t get the job. But when Barack Obama invents facts in a book ranked No. 8 on the NY Times nonfiction list, it not only fails to be noticed but it helps elevate him into the national political pantheon.

Bishop on October 16, 2008 at 7:04 PM

I contract construction companies and contractors to fix Katrina damaged houses in MS. It’s true, at least in this state, that whoever pulls the permit for a job can put his 4 year old son in charge if they want, as long as he trusts him and is willing to take responsibility for any problems with inspections and/or future claims sub standard work that cause damage or injury. So if Joe’s boss trusts that his work is safe and will pass inspection, he can work all he wants. This is also the loophole that allows volunteers to travel across state lines to work on disaster ravaged houses.

Grue in the Attic on October 16, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Cities police the local building ordinances very closely. Each permit generates $50 or more for the government–sometimes much more than that because they require several inspections at various points in a process. And they want to make sure that all of the builders/plumbers/etc understand the rules, because the cities want to capture the value of all improvements in increased assessed value for houses and buildings.

It’s not Obama, it’s Toledo (and probably the State of Ohio).

Predictably, Dale was acquitted in less than 2 hours by a jury of his peers.

…Mr. Dale given a clean bill of health by the Internal Revenue Service after 3 years of intense scrutiny…

One of the most terrifying examples of what a liberal will do to get their way.
Joe the plumber is just a step away from that precipice…

But that maybe, just maybe, the light bulb will come on and people will realize what a tyrannical and oppressive Obama Administration would actually be like.

tru2tx on October 16, 2008 at 7:01 PM

And that Obama is a Socialist who wants to take money away from people who work and earn it and re-distribute it to people who don’t — “spreading the wealth around” in the interest of promoting “fairness.”

We’ve seen how that worked out with the Democrats’ laws requiring banks to give mortgage loans to low-income borrowers who weren’t qualified to receive such loans — all in the interest of spreading the wealth of homeownership (because after all, it’s just not “fair” that everybody can’t own their own home). How’s that been working out for you, America?

Nelsa,it looks like he had to have had 5 years of experience before applying for the application. Didn’t he have it after beginning to take the classes?

And who knows what it takes to be a tradesperson.

Perhaps the harassment of Joe the Plumber by the press will be this election’s Paul Wellstone Memorial.

Matteo on October 16, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Um…that’s total Crap. Only the owner, or an appointed officer of a contracting company need hold the license. His workers are just that…WORKERS. Joe is an ambitious WORKER. If he should buy the company, he would EITHER need to get a license, or bring someone on-board who is willing to let the BUSINESS work under his or her license.

Not every plumber / electrican / carpenter out there has his fricking contracting license. This is what passes for news…jumping jesus on a pogo-stick.

McCain should do an add showing a scene/script about Le Miserables and Joe, he could portray Obama like the psycho French cop out to get the main character for stealing bread for his family.

Obama is such a totalitarian.

SPEAK OUT AGAINST OBAMA AND GET CRUSHED. THAT’S the message.

Loving it. Have your people call my people and we’ll discuss a script over lunch.

So, Jim, it’s just a coincidence that ‘the state’ happened to notice Joe NOW? Nothing to do with what he’s said?

right…………..

Does anyone have a link to Obama attacking the plumber?

right2bright on October 16, 2008 at 7:12 PM

I love that they just go past the whole point. That Obama wants to use socialist methods to manage the country.

ZING BABY.

Anyway, I think we should strike at our ACTUAL opponents in this cycle. The MSM.

The add is simple – highlight the gigantic left skew of the media quickly (80% registered Democrat, etc.). Show them enamored of THE ONE via all those AP halo pictures, etc. Then show people the speed with which they moved to take out Joe the Plumber and highlight that THIS is how they treat dissent. End with the line riffing on the wish that our journalists did as much digging on Obama’s friends as they do on his enemies.

BAM. Post it on Youtube, send it viral to all your friends and family, get it to Fox, Rush, InstaPundit, whoever. That’ll leave a mark.

TheUnrepentantGeek on October 16, 2008 at 7:12 PM

I brought up Billy Dale earlier…this is what happened to him. Here

Predictably, Dale was acquitted in less than 2 hours by a jury of his peers.

Unfortunately, Mr. Dale’s speedy acquittal did not put an end to his 3-year ordeal. The IRS pursued Dale, threatening income tax audits. The IRS also was busy in Smyrna, TN auditing the company that did business with Mr. Dale at the Travel Office, UltrAir.

Le Miserables

Sapwolf on October 16, 2008 at 7:13 PM

Any link or summary of what Obama said?

SAZMD on October 16, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Fox has had it on almost every show this afternoon, it was just on Britt Hume’s show.

It was at a NH rally, at an apple orchard, today.

reshas1 on October 16, 2008 at 7:13 PM

It’s not Obama, it’s Toledo (and probably the State of Ohio).

jim m on October 16, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Yeah, I’m sure the city of Toleda has an entire department of crack staffers monitoring the media for rogue plumbers. There’s absolutely no chance that anyone was motivated by their desire to help the Obama campaign.

It’s the Chicago way.

If they bring a plunger, we bring a wrench.

If they fix the drain, we stop off the old lines and put in copper!

And if they re-do the sprinkler system, we call the inspector and demand about 12 permits.

For me to them:

Jennifer Skalka,

I understand that is very entertaining to “Richard Jewel” ‘Joe the Plumber’; however, I have a serious question regarding your publication going down this direction. Are you trying to tell me that because of Joe’s personal background his question to Senator Obama was not valid? Or how about Senator Obama’s response to Joe? Does Joe’s background change the meaning behind what Senator Obama said to him?

It’s quite convenient to change the story by making it about Joe and who he is and what he is. Let me just point something out to you though, Jennifer. Joe didn’t force Senator Obama’s to answer a simple question in the manner he choose to do it in. If Senator Obama believes in Marxist theology he needs to be honest about that and as a presidential candidate, I have a right to know what Senator Obama’s political philosophy is about.

I don’t give a hoot about Joe and why he asked the question. Joe has no bearing or importance on my life and the direction of the government. Senator Obama and his fiscal policy ideas will most certainly have an impact on my life and I deserve to know EXACTLY what that entails.

Thank you for your time.
