Debate: Live chat and open thread

Tonight we have the final presidential debate for the 2008 cycle, and if you’re in the Twin Cities area, we have some party ready for you!  AM1280 The Patriot will host a debate party at Trocadero’s in Minneapolis tonight.  The Northern Alliance Radio Network will emcee an evening of fun and politics, including my radio partner Mitch Berg, Power Line, SCSU Scholars, and Fraters Libertas.  We’ll have free appetizers and a cash bar. The debate goes from 8pm CST to 9:30pm CST and doors will open around 7:30pm. Admission is free – but please RSVP at the handy AM1280 RSVP Page so we can plan accordingly.

You won’t miss anything at Hot Air, either, if you’re not able to make it to the party.  We’ll have a live chat room running during the debate, with Jazz Shaw and Lady Logician moderating a cast of thousands — literally!  Since the live streaming has interfered with the operation of the blog for some Hot Air readers, we’ll skip that and stick with the chat room.

I’ll also make a post-debate appearance on the Hugh Hewitt show at 10:30 CT to discuss the night’s events and their implication for the election. And yes, I shamelessly recycled the first two paragraphs of this post from my pre-debate analysis.  I’m all about efficiency, baby!

“Gang of 3″

That’s another winner. I wonder if that was originally Romney’s.

progressoverpeace on October 15, 2008 at 11:23 PM

It they’d air these debates even an HOUR earlier, a large portion of the audience would stay awake to see the analysis afterwards.

I spoke with my parents immediately after tonights debate for a few minutes, and they were heading to bed. If you’re over 70, 11pm is like eleventy-hundred PM

Romney is so fantastic…could you imagine if Huck hadn’t thrown WV/VA (whichever) that screwed up his momentum? Romneyw ould have won hands down…oh well, woulda coulda shoulda…I still think McCain will win the election.

JustTruth101 on October 15, 2008 at 11:24 PM

I thought McCain did great. Yeah,, he could have done better in some ways,, but I loved the debate. Obama looked like a little squirrel. Obama does not look good when he looks directly into the camera. He looks like he is lying and somewhat crosseyed. He has a strange expression,, shifty and nervous.
One point that McCain could have done a knockout was when Obama nervously said “No I didn’t” when McCain said he had launched his political career out of Ayers living room. McCain should have right them asked Obama to “repeat those words again for America,, and then add,, “Senator,, that is not true. You did. Why would you say you didn’t when you did? America is going to find out the truth, Mr Obama,,Why and how can you say to the American people that you didn’t when you did. Then go onto to explain in detail who Ayers is, and how very few American would want anything to do with this man,, but again,, Mr Obama,, repeat your words one more time for America, to all the cameras, please say this again, if you can so that all can hear you clearly,, “

Linlou, I got that too and thought he actually tried to bolster Louis’s claim and then belittled McCain’s even wanting to address it.

Mitt says McCain won 3:1 tonight, his strongest debate yet. I thought it was against the Mormon religion to do ’shrooms.

NightmareOnKStreet on October 15, 2008 at 11:18 PM
Nah. He said the focus group he watched said that. That’s why I was trying to find out what network that was on…

IrishEi on October 15, 2008 at 11:21 PM

He might be talking about the support that some of the focus group had for Mac. They weren’t in the tank for Obama that I saw, except for that one lady who fell for his “middle class tax cut” line. Maybe if you count all the positives, it was more for Mac, even though the 4 people whose minds were changed all said it was to Obama?

But, we have to admit, a whole bunch of evangelicals wouldnt vote for Mitt because they dont like them thar Mormons. Fox, like all of the rest, is interested in expanding its international share of the market.

They see Obama as good for the entertainment business.

Saltysam on October 15, 2008 at 11:28 PM

McCain was strong, but he missed a few opportunities. I think his abortion answer would have been stronger if he had mentioned the Freedom of Choice Act. What could Obama say to that? I’m furious Obama got away with flat out lying about the Infant Born Alive Act. But just like Biden, no one in the MSM will call him on the lies.

Most of McCain’s economic answers were very good. His health care answer was OK, but he could have defended his plan better. On education he did as well as he could. Democrats always try to give away the world with education and health care, and it is hard for an honest conservative to pander like that.

The Ayers thing fell flat – I think it has run its course. And of course McCain defended Palin. And he has said many other times that she is qualified. I’m glad McCain showed how “qualified” Biden is by stating all the times he had been wrong.

Where’s Obama drafting women into his army to invade Pakistan?

Where’s Obama mimicking Herbert Hoover in raising taxes in hard times and blocking free trade?

Can McCain please swallow before he talks to avoid whistling his message? It could help.
Thank goodness the debates are over.

thmcbb on October 15, 2008 at 11:24 PM

They’ve given too many shows to liberal tools like Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera.

Don’t worry about the polls, folks. Most of them show McCain behind by 5 or 6 points, and these polls always skew in favor of Dims anyway, so the real numbers are probably much closer. This election is far from lost, no matter what the Liberal “analysts” on t.v. want the public to believe.

I think when MSNBC because the voice of the moonbats, they took a look around and realized that Fox was becoming a mixed bag and with just a smidgen of legitimate coverage, they just might pick off a bunch of viewers. Their coverage of ACORN has been terrific and they have had a number of other fair stories lately. I predict that if they keep it up, they will go back in front of Fox.

Oh yeah, the Senator Government thing was awesome. Even better if it was not planned (I don’t think it was).

SAZMD on October 15, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Obama acts like the trained lawyer he is, cooly enumerating his points and laying out facts (even if they are lies) to make a point while deftly deflecting attacks on his position. McCain acts more like a politician, making emotional generalizations and not laying out his case in a more organized fashion. Which will work? Obama’s facts, if added up, amount to a declaration of tax and spend liberalism, with government “investing” by promoting more programs. McCain pointed that out and hoped to connect with the American people’s visceral dislike of being told what to do, being taxed excessively and distrust of big government. In years past, liberals like Obama have been trounced because of that, no matter what promises they made. But this year, Republicans are equated with the Wall Street crowd that most people believe has nearly brought this country to ruin, and the people are mad as hell and want to punish the party in charge. Unless the people come to their senses, it’s going to be a Democratic landslide.

NNtrancer on October 15, 2008 at 11:32 PM

I’m sure there were some, but I think most of the folks I go to church with were accepting of Mitt. Look, one thing we can all agree on I think is that the media picked McCain a long time ago against GW Bush knowing that he would polarize the party. I honestly think that they pushed him on us, (I note the NYTs endorsing him one week for the primary and then when the general started they dropped him like a hot potato(e)) and then were in aggitated awe that we’ve gotten so behind him and that there guy still hasn’t really closed the deal. I just say lets stick together.

PS Hannity, I love him for the Ayers attack dog role he gingerly takes on.

Roger Waters on October 15, 2008 at 11:17 PM

I like Romney and would much rather him as our candidate than Mccain. That said, Romney never had a shot. By and large he does not connect to a large group of people in this country. He was the Massachusetts governor with a record of being pro-gay, pro-choice, and really bad on guns. I opposed him from the start because of Romneycare. I also hated his idea of giving money to the auto industry.

Mitt Romney is talented and likeable, but he entered the Republican primary with a less than conservative record and it cost him. He ran hard to the right, which he had to do. And maybe he convinced you he is a true right-winger, but a lot of us believe it was rank opportunism. I see Mitt as a maleable man of the middle who will say whatever to achieve his next goal. Maybe that’s wrong. Maybe he was always a true conservative and moved way left to win in Massachusetts. Either way, it makes him seem less than trustworthy.

Bottom line: because of his record he was a fundamentally flawed candidate so it’s disingenuous to blame his loss on evangelicals.

If anything, mormons have a reputation for exceptional ethics and family values.

-Aslan’s Girl

Aslans Girl on October 15, 2008 at 11:39 PM

The Fox panel was right. All Obambi had to do was play ‘rope-a-dope’ with McCain, and he won.

Obambi was his usual slick, unflappable self, articulate with that convincing baritone. His points sound crisp and intelligent. Never mind whether there’s any truth there; the average viewer has no way of knowing. Obambi can make almost anything he says sound plausible, even convincing.

McCain was mixing up words, stammering, and wheezing. He looked old and sounded older. He completely failed to show how Obambi’s “tax cut for 95% of Americans” was really a welfare scheme. He doesn’t even seem to understand that his own health-care plan would divorce health insurance from employment, and that is a good thing, because of portability.

The Fox guys correctly pointed out that all Obambi had to do was look presidential, which he did. And notice: he’s taller than McCain.

It ain’t over, but barring an October surprise, it might as well be.

Huckabee was the only evangelical pushing that line. Don’t blame evangelicals, blame Huckabee. If he would have dropped out of the race sooner, as he should have, then Romney could have challenged McCain. But it was clear to Romney that Huckabee was going to continue undercutting him at every turn. Huckabee even continued taking shots at Romney even after he dropped out. The Huckster had an obsession about it that was unhealthy and a bit crazy.

hawkdriver on October 15, 2008 at 11:48 PM

I disagree that McCain seemed old, though occasionally his brain worked faster than his mouth, so he went in a couple directions and didn’t finish a sentence. To me he just seemed eager and ready to take on his opponent, and sincere in talking to the American people. More like the first debate (but a little more jovial, as it wasn’t appropriate that night to be), and 100 times better than the second!

Lamentably, I think Sean could air a video showing Wright, Phleger, Ayers and Rezko plotting to destroy America and a substantial chunk of the electorate wouldn’t care.

“Steve, Brian, Gretchen,” it’s Gretchen I was just referring to (though I really also enjoy Steve and Brian — Gretchen has real Conservative spunk).

I forgot to mention them. Yes the Fox &Friends crew (weekdays) are great.

I really like the morning crew too…going to see Steve Doocey at Borders on Friday..

Investors Business Daily says it is a 3 point race! Factor in the “Bradley factor” and McCain wins by 2%!

IBD was the most accurate poll 4 yrs ago, off by .04%.

I get sick of the ignorant anti-evangelical jabs on conservative websites. And it isn’t just people who post comments here, there is widespread ignorance about evangelicals among the conservative elite. Conservatives want their vote, but not their input and it gets tiresome.

flyfisher on October 15, 2008 at 11:50 PM

Is FOX trying to get Obama elected??????

Connie on October 15, 2008 at 11:07 PM

That was my first impression months ago.

The dwarf is on and talking up McCain.

hawkdriver on October 15, 2008 at 11:51 PM

I am one of those who’s not a fan of McCain, but he had me cheering tonight. I don’t know what the Fox panel was smoking but when they laid out their view of the debate I was stunned. I felt like I had watched a different debate. The best line of the night was “if you wanted to run against President Bush you should have run four years ago”

rightonamerica on October 15, 2008 at 11:51 PM

The left and the left media want us to think it’s over, because if we do we won’t bother to vote. It’s an old trick. I am a pessimist at heart, and I think that Obama is going to win, too many people want something for nothing. But none the less, we have to vote, if only to make it as close as possible, so I don’t have to hear the words landslide, or mandate for 4 years.

kam582 on October 15, 2008 at 11:45 PM

You’re right, it is an old trick, although this year we’re getting a full-court press like never before, but don’t give up hope. Remember 10, 10, 5. Long as McCain can keep to within 5 points or less in Rasmussen, Gallup, Zogby, and RCP in the last 10 days, he’s still got a very good shot at winning this. Don’t concern yourself with Newsweek, Time, CBS, or the other polls–they exist for one reason only–to demoralize you. Also, don’t get too discouraged by the negative polls you see here and elsewhere–if you do you’ll only get an ulcer and no one wants that. 10…10…5…that’s the ticket.

Matt Helm on October 15, 2008 at 11:51 PM

Senator Big Government Obama LOST the debate tonight because at every turn he LIED.

maverick muse on October 15, 2008 at 11:52 PM

McCain brought up Fannie and Freddie, too old in most minds to matter, that was the last debates material.
He set Senator Government up for two weeks + of for campaign finance, before against, For partial birth abortion, before against.
Never repudiated Rep. Lewis after an emotional appeal to do so even had OBomber attack Sarah rather than repudiate the racist.
Thats a great ad right there OBomber refusing to repudiate the old Racist,
and finally set up Obomber on his own words of being for redistribution of wealth …Joe Plumber

Sorry if I got to be a bit much, I’m scared. (and the Huckster ticks me off). I think you’re right on Carter level disaster, only I think it will be much worse. Jimmah peaved off his party enough that they didn’t work in the kind of lockstep I expect to see with Piglosi and Reid. Also, the bad guys that Carter emboldened are a lot bigger and uglier than in the 70’s.

God help us,because the One sure as shoot won’t!

I did not think Obama was calm so much as detached. Kind of a like a socio path.

EXACTLY. He lies without so much as a shake of his voice. And that glare he uses to look into the camera: very, very creepy. I find Obama exceptionally unlikable.

Me too Roger. I’ll never forgive that SOB for what he did in West Virginia. If there ever was a more self-absorbed, “what’s in it for me” politico than Huck, I’ve never seen him.

He can kiss my a$$ and I’ll never respect him and I’d vote for freakin Obama before Huck. At least Obama is a visible snake. With Huck, he’ll give you a hug and lift your wallet at the same time.

flyfisher on October 15, 2008 at 11:50 PM

Evangelicals get a raw deal on so many issues–if people would just stop and think about it, it has always been evangelicals who were at the forefront in fighting for human rights and liberty. Evangelicals have historically played vital roles in the abolition of slavery, penal reform, and also in bringing to light colonial abuses such as what the Belgians did in the Congo and the Germans in Southwest Africa. It was evangelicals who, during the First Great Awakening in this country awakened public consciousness as regards the corruption of colonial government officials and pressed for religious toleration.

We owe evangelicals a great debt.

And now he has his show on Fox, so he’s set. We’re still sorting it out and we’re set.

PS, Huck by not giving up the primary caused the McCain campaign to spend a bunch of money that he could be spending right now against Hopey-Changey.

Laura in Maryland on October 15, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Anybody here from Florida? I’ve been wondering what kind of ads the McCain/Repubs are running there. If I were them, I’d have some ads pointing out that Obama is the candidate of choice for both the Communist Party, USA (which has given Obama their official endorsement), as well as Fidel Castro (who called Obama the superior candidate). I hear Commies, and Castro, are not too popular with a lot of Florida voters.

Who are the first to compassionately respond to victims of natural disasters?
Who give more sacrificially to the poor than any other group?
Who are the most likely to give up successful careers in order to serve the underprivileged full-time?
Who are the most likely to adopt one of the world’s 143 million orphans? (I could go on and on)
The Christians that Bill Maher loves to hate.
