Debate: Live chat and open thread

Tonight we have the final presidential debate for the 2008 cycle, and if you’re in the Twin Cities area, we have some party ready for you! AM1280 The Patriot will host a debate party at Trocadero’s in Minneapolis tonight. The Northern Alliance Radio Network will emcee an evening of fun and politics, including my radio partner Mitch Berg, Power Line, SCSU Scholars, and Fraters Libertas. We’ll have free appetizers and a cash bar. The debate goes from 8pm CST to 9:30pm CST and doors will open around 7:30pm. Admission is free – but please RSVP at the handy AM1280 RSVP Page so we can plan accordingly.
You won’t miss anything at Hot Air, either, if you’re not able to make it to the party. We’ll have a live chat room running during the debate, with Jazz Shaw and Lady Logician moderating a cast of thousands — literally! Since the live streaming has interfered with the operation of the blog for some Hot Air readers, we’ll skip that and stick with the chat room.
I’ll also make a post-debate appearance on the Hugh Hewitt show at 10:30 CT to discuss the night’s events and their implication for the election. And yes, I shamelessly recycled the first two paragraphs of this post from my pre-debate analysis. I’m all about efficiency, baby!

Romney was and IS still my first choice, but he would not have a chance in an election, this year. Too many Americans have forgotten what made us America. There are too many weak, lazy socialists, awarding their vote to the guy that will give them the most. Most Americans today do not put “Country First.”

McCain is going to win the election…the whole freaking country WANTS to vote for a black man to erase racism, they WANT to try something brand new because of the economic meltdown and they have all been told by the MSM Bush is the root of all evil, YET THEY CAN’T…the democrats have put forth the smoothest talking coolest cat they couldn’t dream up a better candidate, and STILL he can’t close.

I thought McCain won the debate. I did not think Obama was calm so much as detached. Kind of a like a socio path.
They can lie to your face and then stab you in the eye.
Krauthammer does not like Obama, at least he does not like the racist attacks we have seen from his compaign, but he might like the whole well dressed urbane crap.
I think Fox is trying to appear not in the bag for McCain.
Whatever.
I think McCain did a good job. Too bad the same can’t be said for the press or McCain would not have to try and cram all of Obama’s bad history into a 5 minute answer.

If there were any undecideds before this debate, they weren’t voting anyway. Some people will do anything to get their 15 minutes of fame. I’ll bet the audience for this debate is very low because 99% had already decided who they were voting for and I’ll bet that most are like my family. My siblings, all 7 of them, don’t watch the debates (with the exception of Palin) because they know who they are voting for and firmly believe that all this is BS. Screw the media and screw the politicians!

I watched most of the post debate analysis on FOX then turned to ABC. I hate to say it but Barnes, Crystal, Krauthammer, et. al. are terrible. I believe they want McCain to lose and will do anything to diminish his performance. Actually, ABC did a much better job of analyzing the debate and were much more “fair and balanced”.
rplat on October 15, 2008 at 11:10 PM
No way can I read the whole comments section here before commenting, so here’s my “first blush” general overview response to the debate (I’mm going to write in specifics tomorrow morning on my own site and save everyone here too much more tonight):
McCain has finally arrived.
I mean by that, here’s the guy I was hoping he’d be in the earlier debates, with specifics, directly confronting issues contradictions and unanswered, bothersome “unidentifieds” associated with Obama, including those Obama is responsible for.
Obama convinced me he’s untrustworthy.
I mean by that, Obama talked too loudly and too rapidly at the very outset, did not engender confidence accordingly — where the supportive media was while this was going on, I have no idea (some writing that Obama “maintained calm” and was “cool” and “composed” are just outright inaccurate).
Obama displayed a very offensive “smirking” “non-smile” while McCain spoke; Obama ALSO tried appeasing the moderator with grins, mouthed words (pronounced with his mouth but inaudible) to the moderator, as if he and moderator were in some “special relationship” or Obama was attempting to establish such — I sensed farther on in the debate that the moderator declined Obama’s come-ons because Obama eventually stopped this behavior while he never stopped his smirking non-smile/fake-smile while listening to McCain.
Other things about Obama that I found very disquieting (issues aside but there are a lot of issues I want to write about tomorrow on my own site) were that he did not look at McCain during the earlier debate, looking down and toward McCain when he spoke about McCain, BUT, it was a disrespectful glancing, dismissive (all the Obama complaints about McCain’s not “looking at Obama” in the first debate — there was Obama displaying a far more extreme disregard tonight for McCain).
And, Obama didn’t respond or offer any explanation that was believable about the Ayers/Acorn commisseration, returning instead to his wan excuses about “years ago” and “not a part of my campaign.”
I find Obama exceptionally offensive. When he turned eventaully to stare at the camera (about his “most important issue,” that of “energy”), his head was tilted to a side while speaking — revealing he REALLY is avoiding people and/or misleading the public, there’s some problem there with him not being available and the side-head-tilt is a real problem when he instead is emphasising, so he says, his “most important (issue) to (his) campaign…”
Anyway, I realize the media’s probably going to have a 360 degree opposite interpretation than me, but, my views, my read of the events tonight — specific issues pending later discussion on my own site.

“Senator Government” is a CLASSIC! We need t-shirts and bumper-stickers. IMO, it’s right up there with Reagan’s joke about Mondale’s youth and inexperience. Brilliant “slip”.
If Fox continues to have so opposite a view as their audience, they will cease being the #1 network. Very disappointing reax from them all.
I was very offended by Obama’s repeated laughter during McCain’s answers. I found it terribly immature and showed he was nervous. At least Barnes mentioned it and said that viewers might be offended.

I think I’d also like to have a real hand count on that “clear majority” of hands that were raised. The whole group didn’t make sense. The group at first said that no one came in supporting Obama. Then, hands were raised that looked evenly split, saying that Obama won the debate,, yet the idiot in charge said it was a”clear majority.” Then, at the end,, when he asked who is now supporting or leaning towards Obama, 3 or 4 people raised their hands and the idiot in charge said “Looks like a good night for Obama.” I think that whole segment needs to be put up and watched again. It was unbelievable. Did I get this right???Or am I the one confused??

This election is proof that the media has a left wing bias (aka controlled by the DNC), they’re spewing propaganda out at an amazing rate. You have white propaganda (MSNBC), that states they are liberal (or overtly appear to be left of center). Grey propaganda (CNN), that says they’re not in the tank for any party. And black propaganda (Fox News), they say they’re conservative (they give conservatives a voice in the media, at least that’s what they say) but they’re really for the opposing side.

Gah, Hillary is now pronouncing that Obama “has sealed the deal with the American voters” — did anyone ever think she’d say otherwise?
I can’t stand this media presumption on public opinion, as if they’re there to dictate just what “the American voters” think or must think.

I switched over from Fox to the BBC (kinda accidentally) and it was very different commentary. For instance, it was noted that China isn’t as taken with Obama as Europe, because there is an “unspoken” undercurrent (for lack of better word) that they really don’t like non-white people.
And, the British newscaster at the Washington studio said to the Politico guy (mega paraphrasing) “Well, the administration can’t adequately calm the nerves of the American people on this economic crisis, and neither can Congress or Paulson, so it’s not surprising neither candidate can.”
I thought McCain did great. He totally won this debate, and I don’t think this thing is over by a long shot, as evidenced by only 4 of Luntz’s focus group saying they switched to Obama … despite a majority thinking he won the debate. I also think McCain hit a chord with the voters when he pointed out how art and eloquent (but sly) Obama is — one of the focus group guys said “I’m not voting for the best speaker, I’m voting for president.”
Fred Barnes was right, Mac SHOULD have hit him hard on that abortion bill and his support of taxpayer-funded abortions. He did hit hard on other things though, and had Obama on defense all night, which is why we saw O either pursing his lips or laughing big and fake like a guilty 3rd grader.

Well, Williams and Tottenberg are no surprise–of course, they’re going to be for Obama. I think Kristol and probably Barnes as well are, more than anything else, acting out of a sense of childish pique. Remember, they travel in the same circles as Douthat [sic?] and MacDonald and Parker. They’re ticked off because those of us belonging to the “unwashed masses” are not accepting their judgment as regards Palin and McCain is not choosing to just lie down and die and “lose honorably”–the key word in that is lose. There’s a new conservative movement taking shape and this movement neither wants nor needs their leadership or intellectual direction, so they’re behaving like the kid who takes his ball away and goes home when the other kids don’t do what he wants them to do.
