Debate: Live chat and open thread

Tonight we have the final presidential debate for the 2008 cycle, and if you’re in the Twin Cities area, we have some party ready for you! AM1280 The Patriot will host a debate party at Trocadero’s in Minneapolis tonight. The Northern Alliance Radio Network will emcee an evening of fun and politics, including my radio partner Mitch Berg, Power Line, SCSU Scholars, and Fraters Libertas. We’ll have free appetizers and a cash bar. The debate goes from 8pm CST to 9:30pm CST and doors will open around 7:30pm. Admission is free – but please RSVP at the handy AM1280 RSVP Page so we can plan accordingly.
You won’t miss anything at Hot Air, either, if you’re not able to make it to the party. We’ll have a live chat room running during the debate, with Jazz Shaw and Lady Logician moderating a cast of thousands — literally! Since the live streaming has interfered with the operation of the blog for some Hot Air readers, we’ll skip that and stick with the chat room.
I’ll also make a post-debate appearance on the Hugh Hewitt show at 10:30 CT to discuss the night’s events and their implication for the election. And yes, I shamelessly recycled the first two paragraphs of this post from my pre-debate analysis. I’m all about efficiency, baby!

I think the fact that most of us are political junkies and see the nuance in every attack John makes certainly colors our overall objectivity.
I still think John totally kicked his ass though.

The commentators on FOX are out of their minds. It is as if someone from the top came down with an order to favor Obama in the post-debate discussion, perhaps concernd about Obama’s charge that he has lost points ion the polls due to FOX. The truth is that McCain clearly won this debate.
Phil Byler on October 15, 2008 at 10:54 PM
McCain was better tonight. It was his best debate of the three. He didn’t close the deal though. He had two or three really good opportunities to smack Obama with the “big right hand” and let them go by with nothing but a jab.
I think McCain missed his best chance to rattle Obama in their first debate. If he would have come out this strong in that debate he might have gotten BO to crack some. But now BO has gained confidence and parried well.

(Did my last post not get through due to some kind of language filter? If so, I’ve taken a few minutes to cool down and change it.)
1) McCain hit all the right notes with me tonight. He stuck it to Barack “Violence Against Wimmenz” Obama on everything from Barry’s Bush-McCain screed to wealth redistribution.
2) Speaking of Obama . . . I’ve always believed that the best indicator of how someone really feels about an issue is the first thing that comes out of their mouth under pressure. That classless little piece of trash said a thousand words to me by responding to McCain’s statement about Lewis, the comparison to George Wallace, and how it hurt him with first defending it and then attacking Gov. Palin.
3) Who the heck does Barry think he’s fooling by saying he never agreed to meet with Ah’manutjob without preconditions?
Ryan Gandy on October 15, 2008 at 10:55 PM
“unruffled”???
BHO had a nervous smirk going for most of the time.
progressoverpeace on October 15, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Senator Government. I loved it. Socialism at its best.
McCain did what he needed to do tonight. He made Obama a big government liberal. I know the media thinks that liberalism is yesterday’s point but to the majority of /Americans I think it will be a major point when they go into the voting booth. I think since McCain didn’t lose he won. He was the underdog he just needed to raise fears in the minds of /Americans. and he did.

Perhaps we all see a win for Senator McCain because we know who and what Obama really is: a marxist who wants to redistribute the wealth of people who work 12 hour days to people who either don’t work of only work 2 hours a day.
Take solace in THIS: the IBD poll predicted the actual result of the 2004 election to within 4/10 of 1%, and they currently have McCain behind only by 3% with 13% undecided.
If we FIGHT to the bitter end, it might not be the end…not this time.

McCain did better tonight, but he’s not a strong debater. He tripped up and got tongue-tied too much, and he didn’t follow-through and nail down the facts on some of the issues.
In all honesty, Romney would’ve ripped Obama apart.
McCain was better, overall, than I thought he’d be. His best line of the night was about Obama running against Bush. It was his strongest delivery of the evening. I’m glad “he went there” on some topics but he should’ve had better follow up for those topics and better preparation…

I wish McCain had attacked Obama’s education experience because his record on approving money to help education was a dismal failure. Obama actually has a record here and it is awful. But apparently McCain doesn’t know his record.

I cannot believe what the commentators on Fox News are saying after the debate! I totally thought McCain was kicking butt! Now of course, Obama was lying in his rebuttals and there wasn’t enough time to point it all out, but from MY end, I thought it was John McCain’s best outing so far. But then again, I’ve been a geek for months reading about all of this stuff so I smelled Obama’s BS where someone else may not have.
I LOVED every time that McCain would raise his eyebrows and his eyes would get big when Obama was CLEARLY making crap up!

While watching the debate I stayed away from any outside influences. I also did any post-debate coverage. I wanted to comment purely based on my impressions.
We first need to understand that how we see this debate will likely be through rose-colored glasses compared to most Americans. We are hardly unbiased.
I felt McCain won the debate on points. He drew a little blood on:
Not being George Bush
Joe the Plumber
Taxes
Senator Government (intentional or not)
He also missed opportunities on education and abortion that could have been big hits.
So overall I hope to see McCain gain a couple points in the polls.
