Debate: Live chat and open thread

Tonight we have the final presidential debate for the 2008 cycle, and if you’re in the Twin Cities area, we have some party ready for you!  AM1280 The Patriot will host a debate party at Trocadero’s in Minneapolis tonight.  The Northern Alliance Radio Network will emcee an evening of fun and politics, including my radio partner Mitch Berg, Power Line, SCSU Scholars, and Fraters Libertas.  We’ll have free appetizers and a cash bar. The debate goes from 8pm CST to 9:30pm CST and doors will open around 7:30pm. Admission is free – but please RSVP at the handy AM1280 RSVP Page so we can plan accordingly.

You won’t miss anything at Hot Air, either, if you’re not able to make it to the party.  We’ll have a live chat room running during the debate, with Jazz Shaw and Lady Logician moderating a cast of thousands — literally!  Since the live streaming has interfered with the operation of the blog for some Hot Air readers, we’ll skip that and stick with the chat room.

I’ll also make a post-debate appearance on the Hugh Hewitt show at 10:30 CT to discuss the night’s events and their implication for the election. And yes, I shamelessly recycled the first two paragraphs of this post from my pre-debate analysis.  I’m all about efficiency, baby!

McCain: own hard. Pwn often

blatantblue on October 15, 2008 at 7:07 PM

I don’t even want to watch lol

spacekicker on October 15, 2008 at 7:07 PM

I’m totally prepared to watch McCain accept his non-racist, honourable defeat tonight.

CanadianGuy on October 15, 2008 at 7:08 PM

I’m not going to watch. I will do a lot of praying, however. I hope Mac takes a Palin pill before he goes out there, because he needs to put up a good fight.

Ed: I really wish you would separate the live chat and the open thread into different units.

The live chat delay on page refresh really screws up things for those who prefer to comment in the regular fashion.

I expect McCain to do his wussie act again and flame out. Why should any of us expect a win when the candidate will not fight.

Don’t mean to be a hoser, but if McCain gives another performance where he treats Obama more like his friend than his opponent then I’m going to be spending the next 3 weeks watching my NHL Centre Ice Package and probably the World Series.

CanadianGuy on October 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Excerpt from the movie, “Patton” (1970):

When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. Now, I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

Now, an army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post don’t know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating.

Now, we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world. You know, by God, I actually pity those poor bastards we’re going up against. By God, I do. We’re not just going to shoot the bastards. We’re going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We’re going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.

Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you’ll chicken-out under fire. Don’t worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty.

Seven Percent Solution on October 15, 2008 at 7:22 PM

Tonight is “dart league” for me, therefore I will miss the debate. I look forward to reading this thread upon my return home.

For me, the most important topic for McCain tonight is naming the names responsible for the financial markets meltdown that is still taking place. Name the names and back up the claims with facts.

Number (2) for me, is the ACORN disaster. McCain must talk about how ACORN has registered tens of thousands of fraudulent voters, in several states, thus compromising our Democracy. Then he must tie Obama directly to ACORN and force the piece of shit Liberals in the media to cover this attack on our free election process. I must also give credit where credit is due; CNN is covering the ACORN story while the rest of the print media refuses to do so.

If that is all that takes place by McCain, I will be a happy camper.

Keemo on October 15, 2008 at 7:23 PM

McCain is going to throw Palin under the bus tonight and apologize for her comment about him “paling around with a former terrorist”.

Mark my word. He wants to be in the medias good graces far more than he wants to be in the White House. Palin is expendable in his eyes.

roninacreage on October 15, 2008 at 7:23 PM

Tomorrow’s Drudge headline:

- The Daily Kos along with MSNBC want to have Bob Schieffer fired for not standing up John McCain in last night’s debate.

- McCain seen as the Bully for pointing out Obama’s past.

anniekc on October 15, 2008 at 7:39 PM

I want to hear McCain:

-slam Dems on Freddie/Fannie
-slam Obama on Ayers
-slam Obama on ACORN/vote fraud
-clarify that Obama will raise taxes and hurt the economy
-talk about abortion and guns (which hasn’t come up once)

my expectations of any of that actually happening are low

brak on October 15, 2008 at 7:41 PM

I still say McCain should sing an aria. I recommend the Russia one about the million roses. It’s always a tearjerker, and it’s the only game-changer left.

That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war.
RBMN on October 15, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Of course, that was true when Patton said it in 1944. Sadly, our next war conflict was a tie (though one of our greatest Generals was forced into retirement by the Democratic President at the time) and the next war conflict was a loss, because two Democratic Presidents refused to win it.

Prediction: Putin runs wild if Obama wins.

I just saw that on FOX. Kind of good and yet kind of lame at the same time….

They don’t HAVE to delay the game for this. They want to. I would assume that the baseball organization has some sort of contract, they COULD enforce against the network.

And they could move to another network due to breach of contract, if they had the will to do so.

But the (bread and circuses) baseball will do even better under 0bama, as the populace’s options are further limited. So, they don’t mind providing a captive audience for 0Bama’s warm-up act.

LegendHasIt on October 15, 2008 at 7:45 PM

It’s not too late for a game-changer, though I don’t see that happening in this debate. Maybe a scandal (ACORN, Rezko, etc.) so big that the media can’t ignore it.

brak on October 15, 2008 at 7:48 PM

I have a bad feeling in my stomach. Maybe its because I’m hungry, but I believe McCain is walking into a trap tonight. They want Ayers to be discussed, but why? Obama has to have a comeback line ready, so it’ll probably make McCain’s attack mute.

McCain needs to attack, but he needs to attack Obama’s policies first. He needs to explain why higher taxes will hurt everyone from top to bottom. He needs to ask Obama how he plans to pay for anything, especially considering how we have no money. He needs to point out that the price of oil has dropped, and Obama simply can’t tax the oil companies to death to pay for his crap.

Then, he needs to attack Obama’s ideology. This is where Ayers, Wright, “spread the wealth” and “cling to their guns” comes out. He might need to go over the head of the moderator to do this, but he needs to talk to the American people, not to the moderator.

El_Terrible on October 15, 2008 at 7:48 PM

McCain doesn’t need to be angry or nasty, just show that ornery, feisty, snarky side that came out against Romney. Remember this line? “I’ll give you this: You are the candidate of change.” When did McCain stop grinning? He seems rattled now.

For a second, I thought the title said “Debate: Live chat and open dread.” Johnny Mac had better not be flat again if he wants to pull this one out.

Blackacre on October 15, 2008 at 7:54 PM

McCain could hit a home run if he would just utter these words against Obama tonight:

Socialist
Alinsky
Infanticide
ACORN
G.D. America
Reparations
Spread-the-wealth

(He especially has to bring up the infanticide. America needs to be reminded of O’s stance on late term abortions and “4th trimester” abortions.)

ErinF on October 15, 2008 at 7:55 PM

albill on October 15, 2008 at 7:53 PM

The same will happen if Obama preempts an attack by bringing up Ayers. McCain will grab the mic from Obama’s hand and tell Obama he has nothing to fear from a President Obama. There will also be heaps of praise for his accomplishments and then McCain will give Obama a gift wrapped box of chocolates.

McCain could ask:

Senator Obama quoted Ronald Reagan— who I’m damned sure would not endorse Barack’s recent Marxist sentiment to ’spread the wealth around’— about “‘Are you better off than you were four years ago?’ Well, since the Democrats came into control of both the House and the Senate in 2006, I;’d like to ask the American people: ‘Are you better off than you were 2 years ago?’. Because, since November of 2006, this has been a Democratic Party-controlled game. And the results have been spectacular, haven’t they? You want more of the same, given them control of the Preidency on top of the House and the Senate and go whole hog with this socialistic, tax and spend, no accountability folly. That’s CHANGE… but let’s HOPE people are smart enough not to risk such a disaster for our country, our economy and our liberty.”

I’m feeling optimistic….I think there is something to this “silent majority” thing. And I think this silent majority has it’s mind made up, regardless of what happens tonight…they just can’t in all good conscience pull the lever for Obama.

But they have to be vewwy vewwy quiet.

Would we all be wringing our hands trying to advise to our candidate if it had been Mitt instead of the Democrat, Blueblood Repub., Mainstream media pick?

No! OBomber would be afraid to show his punk face on the same stage after the beat downs he would have taken on the economy by now!
