This would not be a proud moment for his dad.

He fits in with the MSLSD crowd. Take Parker with you.
jencab on October 14, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Keerist, Matthews could barely keep from humping the monitor on which Buckley appeared.
Of course for the next few days, ol’ Buckley will suddenly become THE voice of the conservative movement and “oh look how wise and insightful he is.”

Seriously – this election shouldn’t be about Reps vs. Dems. It should be DC vs. The Rest of the Country.

thirteen28 on October 14, 2008 at 6:20 PM
He tries so hard to wear his fathers shoes…we know William Buckley, and he is no William Buckley.
His arguments are so strange, upset because of the huge national debt, so he votes for the biggest spender, he wants small government, so he votes for the man who is dedicated to enlarging the government…it is so convoluted.
right2bright on October 14, 2008 at 6:21 PM
Who here thought that 2008 would show Lynn Forester de Rothschild the superior of a Buckley on political views?
Matthews is so predictable: Great writing = criticism of McCain.
Spirit of 1776 on October 14, 2008 at 6:21 PM
Since when was conservatism genetic anyway?
Aside from Steyn, National Review totally sucks anyway.
logis on October 14, 2008 at 6:22 PM
This piece of sh&t has no respect or understanding of anything his father was about. He simply wants to make a name for himself and chose this time to bail. If he truly feels that Obama, who is left of McGovern, is the right man to lead the country with this Congress, this economy, and this world chaos going on, then he was a sham all along.
grdred944 on October 14, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Marxist tool.

1GooDDaDDy on October 14, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Just the fact that he decides to plead his case on Hardball is reason enough to dismiss anything he has to say.
Blech. Blech. Blech

It’s just pathetic to go on MSNBC and suck up to Matthews … more pathetic even than Paulson getting on his knees before Pelosi.
What’s it like to go through life with no pride, Christopher?

“I’m putting it all on black”
Racist!!!!!!
He’s right about spending, but Obama wants to spend another trillion.

This just strikes me as so odd … he didn’t do this on principle, he couldn’t have. Obama is not only the weakest candidate ever fielded, but his anti-American/communist past blares out like a siren.
No, something else is going on here … notice how quickly he made it to MSNBC? I mean c’mon now.
darwin on October 14, 2008 at 6:25 PM
What a coincidence — he’s selling a new book.
Looks like his attention-getting endorsement worked exactly as planned.
Exurban Jon on October 14, 2008 at 6:25 PM
He sounds and looks like a total loser. He can go hump Kathleen Parker, David Brooks, and George Will for all I care.

Didn’t Bill Buckley cut this loser out of his will?
Hilts on October 14, 2008 at 6:29 PM
One wonders how Buckley’s “putting it all on black” comment would have been received by Chris and the rest of the left, if Buckley was a McCain supporter, and used the line referring to some Obama supporter.

peacenprosperity on October 14, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Oh that’s clever statement. I suppose The American Conservative is your idea of a conservative magazine.
Hilts on October 14, 2008 at 6:31 PM
The way these guys(Parker and the lesser Buckley) turn their backs on the republican party and any semblance of conservative government. Then they go to the liberal media, which is more than happy to take them with open arms, proclaiming how crazy or stupid the base is. The only way to describe their actions, despicable.
Complete7 on October 14, 2008 at 6:31 PM
One small consolation: the satire he will eventually write based on all of this will probably be great.
Slublog on October 14, 2008 at 6:32 PM
I wish Mr. Buckley the best of luck on his Strange New Respect tour. I expect he’ll be on The View tomorrow.
Mr. D on October 14, 2008 at 6:32 PM
The man doesn’t make sense.
1) He complains about Bush and running up the national debt. Barack Obama will add more social and add to that debt. So that doesn’t make sense.
2) He keeps talking about Obama’s intellect. HAS HE SEEN OBAMA PERFORM IN THE DEBATES? The man has no clue what he’s talking about and it’s obvious.
terryannonline on October 14, 2008 at 6:32 PM

I disagree with anyone who thinks Obama is some kind of intellectual giant. He’s average intelligence and a severe narcissist. He is an expert liar and manipulator though. Liars and manipulators often have no remorse and the ends always justify the means.
So Buckley likes this in a candidate?

Can’t lower oneself to associate with rubes like Palin, you know. Besides, endorsing Obama as a ‘conservative’ = Ca$hmoney

Didn’t you see The Wizard of Oz. A fancy degree magically MAKES you intelligent. He could spend the rest of his life doing absolutely nothing but grunting like a pig; doesn’t matter, he is by definition a genius.
What really blew me away was how the ‘tard claims that Obama is “great author.” How screwed in the head is that?
On second thought, sure they were nothing but utterly mindless collections of self-indulgent drivel. But I suppose you could say that Barack Obama created an entirely new field of literary endeavor: the auto-hagiography!
logis on October 14, 2008 at 6:43 PM
Eh, I couldn’t get past his attempt at reasoning when he lamented that McCain had been changed by the negative campaigning. Gee, like Obama throwing the race card, lying about social security and McCain/Limbaugh/immigration was roses and honey? His endorsement was disingenuous tripe for that alone.
Maybe I’ll watch the vid when I’m in the mood for a comedy.
aikidoka on October 14, 2008 at 6:44 PM
I couldn’t get thru the whole clip. This saddens me greatly. I read NR cover to cover every month. I have enjoyed reading Christopher’s articles, my favorite was the one he wrote in the tribute issue to his Dad after his death.

He says that he is a small government conservative but he will vote for Obama and doesn’t support victory in Iraq. Right. He is like those Reagan brats who spit on their father’s memory so that they could suck up to the liberal party scene. Michael Reagan, who is adopted, has shown the most admirable devotion to his father.

Jesus Christ himself couldn’t live up to the mass hype and expectations that will be waiting for Obama.
Obama’s promised tax cuts for 95% of Americans, massive spending increases and fiscal responsibility.
The space between Olberman’s pea eyes have more maneuver room than the next presidents going to get with spending.
Chuck Schick on October 14, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Gee, I missed it. Oh well. Seriously, who gives a damn? 90% of the people in the country do not even know who this guy is. And the other 10% only know because his Dad gave him an easy way in.
As for the debt and all that…go talk to Congress. When Pelosi and Reid took control of the Congress the deficit was 153 billion, it is more than twice that now. And Obama voted for every spending bill. He voted to over ride the vetoes Bush did sign.
One thing about Obama, his idea of dealing with the debt is to raise taxes. He makes no secret of that. He has not intention of cutting spending.

I’m getting the feeling that McCain is a GOP sacrifical lamb, in order to ensure a Carteresque Obama administration… that will create the urgent demand in 2001 for a Reaganesque Romney administration.
I mean, McCain isn’t acting AT ALL like someone who wants to seriously win this thing.
VastRightWingConspirator on October 14, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Don’t you just love how the leftwing hate machine swings into action to embrace the GOP defectors like Buckley and Kathleen Parker?
They crave attention, stab their party in the back, and then get fawned over by the left. I know whores with better scruples.
roninacreage on October 14, 2008 at 6:49 PM
I think his point was that it’s nearly impossible to be a small government conservative anymore (“it’s all water under the bridge”) considering the fact that a supposed conservative ran up the debt so much, so he’d rather vote based on intellect and temperment. Let’s face it, Obama is the clear winner based on those criteria.
crr6 on October 14, 2008 at 6:50 PM
Oh man, he sounds so snobbish. You call yourself a conservative? Like I said in the headline. You don’t have to support McCain, But you should never support Obama. The simple fact is that his record speaks for himself. He will govern left, it doesn’t matter if it works or not, he will do so because he believes it’s ‘fair’.

You’re not trying hard enough.
An empty suit hardly qualifies for intellect. As for temperament… well, we’ve seen what happens when the handlers let Obama get off-prompter. And it’s not pretty. At least when McCain ad-libs he doesn’t condemn the entire country.

I won’t be reading or financially supporting anything from this man. Let him get a real job that he didn’t get simply because of his last name.
Although I am loving this. The Blue Bloods, the Centrists/Moderates, the RINOs, the Libertarians are all getting their a$$es kicked out of the tent after this election. I’m finally going to have my Party back.
Like I said, the only good thing about this election for me is that I won’t be seeing McCain run for anything other than Senator from Arizona. Hopefully he’ll retire sooner rather than later. But his credibility as a leader in the Senate will definitely be diminished. This will be a good thing. The Gang can eat my a$$ on the whole Shamnesty and Justice filibuster crap. Hopefully no one will retire or die at The Court within the first 2 years and we can get back control of Congress and filibuster the sh!it out of everything.
Sultry Beauty on October 14, 2008 at 6:53 PM

I would say becoming Pres. of the Harvard Law Review and graduating magna cum laude means you have some intellect. At least more then they guy who graduated 5th from the bottom of his class. As for temperment, McCain has been all over the place recently with crazy campaign stunts and gimmicky policy proposals. In the meantime Obama has been perfectly calm and purposeful. The guy is constitutionally incapable of making an impulsive move.

Funny though; now that you mention it, I don’t remember voting on that either.

It’s just legal language to prevent his son’s illegitimate son from trying to contest the will. Sounds cold as written, but without some such provision it leaves open the possibility of the kid (or his family) to launch a lawsuit.
Hollowpoint on October 14, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Ok, enough with crap. Yes, George Bush ran up the debt. Very true. He ran up the debt by liberating TWO countries and then reconstructing them after we were attack on our very own soil. Did people think war and security enhancements were going to be cheap? Please find me a president that balanced the the budget and conducted a war. It’s insane. I bet you won’t find one. Who’s being intellectually dishonest here. It’s almost like notion of getting free health care.
Also, spending has increased by 2 percent with Dems in Congress. So how in the world can someone who is complaining about Republican spending then go vote for a Democrat that promises to increase spending even MORE! It’s intellectually dishonest again.

terryannonline:
I agree with that statement. It is as if people forgot all about 9/11. I remember when the whole push to do the 9/11 Commission started, Bush did not want to do it, was criticized for not wanting to get to the bottom of things. Then when the commission said we needed to reorganize government he resisted, was criticized for not wanting to fix what was wrong. So we ended up with the Homeland Security Department.
Then there was recession after 9/11, two wars, Katrina. A Congress that was not exactly interested in frugality.
So I agree, it is a mistake to think this is all some kind of failure for conservatism…there was just a lot to deal with.
Now this meltdown.
Terrye on October 14, 2008 at 7:04 PM
He’s just saying anything that comes to mind, because rationalism has played no role in his decision. It’s all emotion for him, like it is for almost all liberals. Liberals don’t think, they FEEL, and then their brain regurgitates facts to fit how they feel. That’s really the only way they can operate – in a kind of permanent semi-conscious state of enforced stupidity. A lot of it stems from the human instinct for tribalism, in thinking that their team is better. Republicans aren’t exempt from it either, but it’s MUCH less of a factor.
That said, because Buckley is being feted by the left now, he’ll feel that they’re nicer to him and henceforth will adopt their positions very, very quickly. His complaints about the growth of the debt or the government will quickly be replaced by a desire for new spending and new government agencies. You watch. Within a year he’ll be hobnobbing with Barbara Streisand and Michael Moore.
Sydney Carton on October 14, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Also, if Obama is so much intellectually superior to John McCain then why does McCain continually run circles around him when debating foreign policy? Obama gives out talking about Russia, Middle East, ect. during the debates. He doesn’t show any intellectual depth when it comes to the foreign policy.
