WaPo poll: Obama rated a “safer” choice for president than McCain

Three caveats off the bat: (1) Whereas WaPo has Obama up 10 among likelies, other polls like Rasmussen show the race tightening; (2) Tapper’s hearing from people inside Team Barry (perhaps trying to lower expectations) that Obama’s doing worse and McCain’s doing better than recent polls indicate and that it should be within three or so on election day; and (3) with the Dow up big today and further government action coming to put out the financial fire, the calmer things get economically, the better Maverick’s chances are.
Even so, we’re all wondering how well the Ayers attacks are working and this is the best measure I’ve seen so far. It’s true that the sample’s skewed more heavily towards the Dems than usual — 39 D, 30 R — but for perspective, note that the June 15 numbers were based on a sample of 38 D and just 26 R. The good news, I guess, is that Obama’s not any “safer” now than he was on September 29, but that’s a cold comfort for the Ayers strategy.

Either McCain’s not pushing it hard enough or it’s backfiring. The trend in favorables:

A separate question found that 68 percent think Obama’s addressing the issues versus 26 percent who think he’s attacking his opponent; for Maverick, the numbers are 26 percent and 59 percent (up 11 points since August), respectively. The debates aren’t helping either, with opinions of The One having improved 32 percent afterwards versus declined by just eight percent while for McCain it’s almost the opposite: 12 percent improvement versus 26 percent decline.
Here’s Kristol on Fox News Sunday anticipating this morning’s column by ranting about the state of Maverick’s strategy. Exit question: What’s McCain’s way out? He’s not going to push anything new on the economy, which 53 percent rate as their number one issue. Among that 53 percent, The One is favored — 62/33. Oof.
Update: The new Gallup’s just out. After showing the lead shrinking yesterday to seven points, it’s back to 10. Cue the warnings about weekend polls of conservative voters who are busy at church.

Stay quiet, keep your head down, look confident, wait for your opponent to fail. That’s Obama’s strategy. Looks like it’s working.
Too bad that won’t work once he’s in power.

Obama rated a “safer” choice for president than McCain?
Someone explain to me how it is a “safer” choice to be under the rule of President B.O. for four years, as opposed to having McCain calling the shots.
And I suggest you make it one heck of a convincing explanation.

Tie Obama to Acorn

I don’t think he’ll do any of it though. Now that conservatives are whining that McCain’s rhetoric is causing racism and falling for the traditional liberal trap; he can’t do anything. Good job guys.

If democrats (I hate calling them that, they’re really not democrats anymore) get the numbers in the Senate and House, along with Obama winning … they’ll game the system to their favor along with pouring massive taxpayer money into groups like ACORN. The chances of Republicans winning another election fairly is probably slim to none.
In addition, by the end of four years I wouldn’t be surprised to see major industries nationalized and unions strengthened to the point of near invinceability.
In other words … we won’t win again, regardless of how many votes we get.
darwin on October 13, 2008 at 1:52 PM
And those 3 caveats are exactly way Obama took out the 30 minute spots, and why they would feel compelled to do so. Wizbang looked at the polls from 2004 and found they were wrong more often and mostly because of wrongly weighing the polls with more Dems. And I NEVER, EVER believe any polls taken over the weekend. There are usually the MOST heavily weighed Dem versus Republican.
The polls cannot factor in the OS moment some will have in the last private moment most voters are going to have in the voting booth. They also are not factoring in the sheer fear a large number of Americans have either. I believe a good number of people are lying to pollsters just to mess with the polls. Some just do not want their private views made to a stranger.
freeus on October 13, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Because you would be quoting them if they made a positive statement about McCain. You anti-MSMers are starting to sound like flat-Earthers.
If Wapo poll is so flawed, why would AP refer to it? If all polling and MSM reports are so flawed, why ever blog, comment or refer to them. Why not just let the lies lie where they are?
Instead, the standard Republican response is to discount any MSM report as inherently biased. This posturing basically forces you to pick and choose facts. Funny thing is that once you start citing facts in favor of McCain, they should be equally ignored based on your prior logic.
Whatever. You know what you’re doing. You know that you’ve been bitten by the Barkoutloud Bug and just can’t help yourself. You are as passionate and party p*ssy-whipped as your most lunar moonbat.

Look, McCain pulled the plug on the Ayers attack by declaring Obama a decent and honorable man who should not be feared . . . .blah blah blah. People have taken McCain at his word, no need to worry about Obambi. Hence, your poll #s. In short, McCain has himself torpedoed the fear/trust/how well do you know him attack. Ayers, Wright, New Party…it all comes to naught, because of what knothead said in MN on Friday.
james23 on October 13, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Obama is engaging… McCain represents government and corporate buerocratic managerialism … that’s the big difference at least style wise… we need policies which promote individual empowerment and power distribution… not trickle down/investor class/jobism… if McCain wants a good theme to build new policies around then go with “Service, Not Servility”

I don’t know if we should really use the polls as a judge of negative ads. After McCain released the Celeb ads the polls overwhelmingly said that people didn’t like it. But as time went on and the message sunk in the polls moved.
Its only been a week since McCain rolled out Ayers, he needs to have a series of ads questioning Obama’s character, associations and judgment. They should include Rezko, Ayers, Acorn and even Wright if McCain dares. At the beginning of this campaign people were uncomfortable with Obama, now they seem to be settling into the idea of Obama as president. McCain needs to reignite that skepticism and unfamiliarity. When he does that, let’s hope that it will last until election day.

The word safe is subjective.
When people say safe, they might not be thinking of anyone like Ayers. They might be thinking of no war or they might be thinking of extended unemployment benefits or they might be thinking that all the media people just love Obama so he must be the safe bet.
Then there is the bandwagon effect. People assume the guy most people want, must be the safe, accepted candidate.
I know Kristol is railing about strategy and all that, but the truth is when the stock market started going into its nose dive McCain was either ahead or tied. And I think that has more to do with the slip in the polls than any strategy or lack of strategy.
The markets are hope and if people are feeling more secure about the economy in coming weeks that might help McCain.
I guess we will find out.
I posted this in the Gallup thread in the headlines, but I thought it was worth another post. AJ over at Strata-Sphere did this earlier today:
So let me get to the next poll out recently, the newly schizoid Gallup Daily Tracking Poll. I am being very cheeky here because Gallup is doing what I have been asking pollster to do for a while now – show us a range of turnout model predictions. Just like a storm track cone, different turnout model assumptions give different trajectories. So Gallup as done the nation a favor here and shown how turnout assumptions are driving Obama’s tilted numbers in many polls. Here’s their data:
Now we can see as fact how turnout models are twisting the polls (like the Newsweek joke we discussed above). First, note how Obama’s support is very large in the general pool of ‘registered’ voters. This is the standard tilt to the left of the general population, who don’t all vote. When you focus down on ‘likely’ voters we see the classic 3-5% shift to the right (which will be there all the way to the final voting day). Obama’s lead goes from +7% down to +4% using the classic polling model.
Now Gallup tries to inject some momentum in the race by attempting to relate the willingness to talk to pollsters as momentum for one side. As long as the willingness to talk to pollsters is directly tied to willingness to get out and vote, this is could measure any momentum for Obama. But given the fact Palin attracts the same or bigger crowds, even on national TV, I seriously doubt Obama has the edge in momentum anymore. Sarah Palin was a risky gamble, but she may well prove decisive. If you look the Gallup Numbers related to ‘intensity’, Obama jumps back to a +6% lead.
I think there are some really strange things going on with the polls.

You’re partly right. Trying to dissect the MSM news to get at some objective truth is nothing new. Moreover, it’s necessary and prudent. Most of the time you can be reasonably sure that something happened, but rarely what.
If there is a positive item about their opposition (us), we know they tried the best they could to not report it/delay reporting it/spin it to look irrelevant. That means accepting facts from the MSM that are in McCain’s favor is more reasonable than the reverse. (If you said not to take every negative about Obama from a right-wing site as gospel, I’d accept your point.)
We need news and polls. Generally speaking, the best we can do on the right is analyze it, but rarely produce it. So we need the MSM, just like a civilized society needs any of its institutions. But needing them, and referring to them, doesn’t diminish their nearly utter corruption. Even in the darkest days of the USSR, people read their Pravda. They learned how to divine the truth from what wasn’t said, or how it was said. So now do we.

The single most significant statement in your entire post, Allah. My gut is telling me that Team Barry is nearing panic mode. They have access to polling data we do not and the numbers have them scared witless. As we get coser and closer to elction day, the polling organizations – at least the reputable ones like Rasmussen – will reflect this fact in their national polling.
Obama is not NEARLY as far ahead in the polls as the Drive By media is desperately trying to make everyone believe. It would not surprise me that, by the time he appears on his half-hour infomercial, he is actually behind in the polls. I suspect that this is the reason his campaign purchased the broadcast time in the first place.

CanadianGuy on October 13, 2008 at 2:22 PM
I’m growing slightly less gloomy. I live in Maine 2nd and during the football games there were quite a few Obama ads. This district can give one electoral vote to the winner of the district even if the statewide vote goes for the other candidate. This is a district Kerry won with 53% of the vote in a state he carried by 9%. Obama shouldn’t need to spend that kind of money here for the chance at one electoral vote.
We also have a Democrat congressman, but one who is pro-life and pro-gun rights. While I’m still pessimistic about McCain’s chances, my gut tells me Obama has yet to win the trust of the bitter-clingers that make up this rural district.
Palin’s going to be here Thursday. So the media’s insistence that McCain has given up on deep blue parts of the country is simply not true.
Slublog on October 13, 2008 at 2:22 PM
The media run these polls for the same reason politicians do: do see how well their campaigns are doing – and to demonstrate that to others.
The last two weeks, the media have been harping on the “McCain is a maniac” meme, so they run this poll tailor-made to check how well they’ve gotten that message accross. And a lot of people just reflect what they’ve heard without thinking about it.
The good news is that, as it gets closer to election day, people DO think about who they’re going to vote for. Push-polls like this one aren’t designed to reflect what that real decision will be; they’re only designed to help influence it.
logis on October 13, 2008 at 2:22 PM

Of course, not, but some people just can’t miss a chance to bash McCain. They’re the unhinged right.

Obama effectively and fully uses Acorn to change the social face of America and as a platform for personal political power.
McCain’s aim is ?
JiangxiDad on October 13, 2008 at 2:25 PM
I really don’t understand why the same small group of people who allege that they are conservative have to continually post how much the hate McCain in every d*mn thread.
Just admit you want Obama to win and shut up.

Hell no… revolt and raise up someone reasonable. Palin’s at the top of the list right now but there’s several others, wherever that list wandered off to.

You ahole, I was basing my bunker-budget on your dire and gloomy broadcasts of the future, now you’re saying that Obapo is going to lose this thing?
What in the hell am I going to do with 1,000 pounds of freeze-dried soy meal and a state of the art chemical toilet?

Believe none of the polls.

Really? McCain is going to Maine? That’s kinda interesting. Guess he thinks that possible EV is doable and necessary.
To be honest, I’m still totally frosted by Ace yesterday giving into the “republicans are racists and need to tone down their rhetoric” bullcrap from yesterday. I was doin’ okay before that. I think Ayers, etal was having poll effects (contrary to my belief of what would happen). Now that cons and McCain have caved to the idea that “criticism of obama = racism” bullcrap, I’m more gloomy than ever.
Anyways. I’ll watch the debate on Weds. If McCain goes nuclear on Obama, then that $160 million in 2 weeks could pan out. Otherwise, welcome our new socialist overlords.

Or perhaps they are not as confident that all their imaginary friends will get their ballots validated.
Spirit of 1776 on October 13, 2008 at 2:26 PM
Obama “safer”? Safer? Bwahahaha! WaPo pollsters have jumped the shark.
petefrt on October 13, 2008 at 2:26 PM
I should not bash McCain but I would love to bash him for his (quoting Krauthammer) “personal rectitude” of not bringing Wright into the campaign debate.

A really elaborate, really messy practical joke?

Also.
Did you see someone’s idea the other day? You should prepare to make that “mission accomplished” banner with the MSM in front of it.
Cuz they are the 12th man for Obama here. Without their cover fire, Obama would be toast.
