Video: Obama’s redistributionism

posted at 6:55 pm on October 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Fox and Friends featured this exchange between Barack Obama and a plumber on the campaign trail this weekend. Want to hear a redistributionist explain his policy? Here it is:

Plumber to Obama: “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more. Isn’t it?”

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

It really doesn’t get any clearer than this, although a close look at Obama’s tax policy makes it almost as obvious. He doesn’t want to penalize your success! He just wants to take a big chunk of it and give it away to people he likes better.

Redistributionism. It’s what’s for dinner after January. (via The Boss)

Update: I’m not as pessimistic as that last statement sounds.  I just wanted to keep it punchy.  We still have a long way to go before this election is over.

Someone really needs to do a photoshop of Obama in medieval garb, complete with green tights, a felt hat with a feather, and a bow and arrow. Like Uncle Sam ads of years past, Obama’s photo would have him aiming an arrow back at the viewer. The caption should read: “I want you to spread your wealth.”

Beyond that, there’s not much else to add except the following:

We’re all welfare queens now…at least the 50% of us who will be receiving refundable-tax-credit refunds under Obama’s tax plan.”

Check that, I’ll ask that if anyone has a T-shirt business, how about some T-shirts with the slogan?

“I’m an Obama-tax-plan welfare queen.”

Doesn’t get much more clear than that, does it? I love the “nuance” though. When The One says, “I think that when you spread the wealth around it’s good for everybody” He really means, “When I take the wealth from you and spread it to those who support me, it’s good for everybody who supports me”

Like all libs, whenever they say something, you have to insert the words “for me” after the statement. Just like when the Hollywood environmentalists say we have to save the planet, what they mean to say is “you have to save the planed FOR ME”

I’m a canary in the coal mine on this, being a smoker, and I can tell you folks that infringements on rights and the quality of life are insane. Everything just gets shut down to you. The household private property smoking bans (condos) are now spreading to my area. I actually have to move, just to live normally. Meanwhile, the prices on my cigarettes have been jacked up to insane heights. Today they hate cigarettes, tomorrow they hate oil … well, they’ve hated oil for a while, but tomorrow they get the opportunity to show the public how much they hate oil (they gave a really good push with their global warming cr#p, almost getting their way and crippling us) … total collapse of the economy … martial law … We’ve all just experienced how easily things can slip away.

Here is one great example of Obama’s economic policies – another is that he and the Democrats are going to unilaterally decide which companies get to keep profits and which they get to take away in the form of arbitrary windfall profit taxes.

Redistribution is not the solution!

my mother told me a story tonight, At the height of the great depression, her mother and her were out shopping. her mother directed her to a women, and with a look of total disgust said “she’s on relief”. My point is that good people even back then didn’t look for government as the answer, rather, they relied on themselves. that spirit died with Ronald Regean i think

I think that plumber missed a great opportunity. When Obama said he wanted to make sure that the people behind him had the same chance the guy should have brought up two of his employees and said “When you raise my taxes I’m going to lay off these two people right here. I’m going to do this to offset your tax increase with their salaries. I’ll have to do this to keep my business viable. Now you convince them that your plan is a good idea.”

Woman: “But what is failed to be mentioned in that is that 1/3 of all Americans don’t pay taxes.”

Man: “That’s right.”

Woman: “So essentially, they would be getting a check in the mail from Barack Obama’s plan. And the 5% of the top money earners in America will be the ones spreading the wealth as he talked about there.”

Man: “Right.”

Woman: And it just depends on which side of the fence your on if you think that’s a good tax plan or a bad tax plan.”

Man: “Exactly right.”

–I hear this untruth of “1/3 of all Americans don’t pay taxes” all the time. They don’t pay income taxes, but they do pay taxes.

Do you think the people like these folks that repeat this over and over, without specifying “income” taxes, are just stupid or deceitful liars?

Here is another fine example why Obama avoids town hall meetings and is joined at the hip to a tele-prompter. This clip and Biden claiming it’s our patriotic duty to pay more taxes pretty much explains the “net tax cut” income redistribution philosophy of the the Democrats.

Incidentally, they’ve run this over the past ten years, and Gore and Kerry both won in landslides.

If anyone out there doubts that Nick is an extreme lib endoctrination source to American kids, let me spell it out! Nick pushes everything from Dora the Explorer (who teaches you have to speak Spanish to get anywhere) to South of Nowhere (which is about a 15 year old girl who discovers she is a lesbian who ends up in a sexual relationship with the “bad girl” of the school).

Since Nick is such a sewer of lib scum, I suggest all HA and MM bloggers just vote away for McCain. Not sure if it will do any good, buy what the heck.

Andrew D on October 14, 2008 at 2:44 AM

On analogy of “Don’t tase me, bro,” beleagured business owner to Obama, “Don’t spread the wealth at my expense, bro.”

Quite honestly, I relish the moments when Obama is required to think on his feet and to speak off the cuff and without a script. Those moments really are comedy gold because they prove he really is one of the dumbest smart people we’ll ever know.

McCain’s camp needs to develop an ad for this that hits Obama in the face with a two-by-four. For that matter, it should take a page out of Jesse Jackson’s playbook and cut his n*ts off.

The ad could cite statistics on charitable giving (conservative vs. libs), mention how dreadfully inefficient this kind of government wealth redistribution is, mention how Obama’s tax program will balloon over his tern, mention Obama’s $845 billion Global Poverty Act bill, and mention an estimated cost of his civilian national security force (equal to our armed forces). Heck, if Obama is going to justify the tax hike as a spreading the wealth notion, I wonder if it passes constitutional muster.

McCain shouldn’t let Obama get away with this. Worse than welfare, Obama is proposing to steal people’s money. If it’s not stealing–if it’s somehow viewed as “voluntary”–under federal gift tax law, are the wealthy going to be required to file gift tax returns reporting the wealth that they’ll be “spreading around”?

And as far as this statement goes, “I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too,” last time I checked our country champions equal opportunity (and equal protection under the law) not equal results. And how does welfare correlate to success anyway? Welfare as a safety net is one thing, welfare to drive “success” is an entirely different matter.

Seriously, though, is this spreading of the wealth Obama’s version of the Old Testament Jubilee in which a year of rest was observed by the Israelites every 50th year, during which slaves were to be set free, alienated property restored to the former owners, and the lands left untilled?

I can’t wait until Obama’s Department of Justice and IRS starts revoking the tax-exempt status of churches and other organizations that don’t advocate gay and lesbian rights and “reproductive rights.”

BuckeyeSam on October 14, 2008 at 3:02 AM

K… wish granted, BuckeyeSam.

Andrew D on October 14, 2008 at 2:44 AM

That’s pretty good. I was hoping for some effeminate looking tights, though! Still, it really is very good. If you could get a caption (I don’t know what’s entailed in do so), one thought would be “Spread the wealth.” I’m open for something better.

In all events, I don’t know if it’s possible to transmit it to Ed and Allah. Henceforth, it has to be the photo used for any entry on Obama’s tax policies or any other redistribution or socialist agenda item.

Finally, in my 3:02 comment, I got too cute with my “don’t tase me, bro” analogy. In retrospect, I should have gone with the simple, but elegant, “Don’t tax me, bro.”

Good night. And excellent work, Andrew D. I’m still laughing as I head to bed.

It’s not gonna end up in any ad and no one else is gonna talk about it. This was a private conversation between the messiah and one of the unbelievers he encountered on his journey. The messiah was patiently instructing the unbeliever in the Truth of Obama. The press understands that this was a private, personal conversation and McCain is not going to attack Obama’s religion. So get over it.

JellyToast on October 14, 2008 at 7:37 AM

During the debate, McCain needs to quote Obama’s “spreading the wealth” line and then add this: “You can put lipstick on a socialist, but it’s still going to tell you that it knows how to spend your money and run your life better than you do.”

Game. Set. Match.

Logic on October 14, 2008 at 7:37 AM

Why do the Libs feel the need to “spread” OTHER PEOPLE’S wealth around? If they feel so inclined, let THEM write checks. I contribute to the charities I choose – not THEIR vote-buying schemes.

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

I guess that I wasted my time earning a master’s degree in nuclear engineering and working my ass off to get through college. I could have simply waited for the Obamamessiah to steal some money from other high earners and then give it to me.

If McCain doesn’t make this clip into a commercial, he deserves to lose.

MarkTheGreat on October 14, 2008 at 7:00 AM

This is Maverick we’re talking about. I have no illusions about his ability to flush away opportunities, even one as obvious as this. He’ll probably see such a commercial as not keeping with the collegial environment of the Senate and therefore not worth doing. Anyone else would have already such an ad airing in every single battleground state.

Redistribution is not the solution!

Depends. It is if the question is

“How do finally destroy innovation, motivation, personal initiative, individual freedom and the U.S. of A.?”,

I’d say it’s the perfect solution.

oldleprechaun on October 14, 2008 at 8:03 AM

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

Um, I think he already does that. THEY’RE CALLED PAYCHECKS!

marklmail on October 14, 2008 at 8:08 AM

First we had Obama talking about the middle class “clinging to their religion” which is just a different way of quoting Karl Marx: “Religion is the opium of the masses”.

Then we have Obama and his “spread the wealth around” which is the basic foundation of Socialism:
Socialists believe that wealth should not be concentrated in the possession of a few members of a society (”few” being a relative term), and they believe that only the government should be able to determine how much is “enough” and how much is “too much.” The Socialists view it as the duty of the wealthy to support the non-wealthy.

But as Obama pushes his Socialist agenda he should remember another Marx quotation:
“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”
Obama is the farce part.

albill on October 14, 2008 at 8:19 AM

The tax bite would be fairly gentle before that point, but past it, I’d be far more confiscatory, in the interest of not encouraging an inherited aristocracy of the Paris Hilton ilk.

unclesmrgol on October 13, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Paris Hilton is the perfect example of why such a tax is unneccessary. Do you think Paris will do anything to increase the amount that she passes on to any beings unfortunate enough to be her children? On the contrary, she will largely disappate whatever wealth is passed to her during her life.

The money belongs to the person who earned it. Who gets it while they are alive, and after they are dead, is their decision, not the govts, not yours.

There are certainly many decent, sensible people left in the ol’ USA. If the majority of Americans had good old fashioned values and used their heads for something other than hat racks, it would be possible – with much prayer and careful planning – to fashion a socialist system that we could all be proud to live in.

There is no such thing as a socialist system that we can be proud of.

Socialim is based on the notion that those who don’t work have a right to the income and property of those who do.

It is a system that punishes hard work and rewards sloth. There is nothing to be proud of there.

It is a system based on theft. THere is nothing to be proud of there.

marklmail on October 14, 2008 at 8:08 AM

Say what??? Are you talking about the paychecks we taxpayers send to his foot soldiers at ACORN and Public Allies?

Never heard of Public Allies? Neither had I, until I found it on a list of Obama’s earmarks:

Obama Requested $140,000 And Helped Secure $125,000 For Public Allies, Inc (Chicago) Programs For Leadership Training. In 2005, Obama requested $140,000 and received $125,000 for Public Allies, Inc. Public Allies is a nonprofit organization that has represented over 1,800 young adults since 1992. It also utilizes other nonprofit organizations with full-time service in order to build capacity and better meet the needs of children and families. Funding will allow the group to further expand the capacity at 20 youth serving organizations and increase recruiting efforts. [House Report 109-272 (109th Congress); Obama Request Letter to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, 6/21/05]

Thanks to Google, I found a very helpful editorial at Investors Business Daily and discovered that it was founded by Barack Obama in 1992; he subsequently resigned and made Michelle Obama its Executive Director.

As I.B.D. details:

Public Allies promotes “diversity and inclusion,” a program paper says. More than 70% of its recruits are “people of color.” When they’re not protesting, they’re staffing AIDS clinics, handing out condoms, bailing criminals out of jail and helping illegal aliens and the homeless obtain food stamps and other welfare.

What happens during their training P.C. indoctrination program?:

“It’s a lot of talk about race, a lot of talk about sexism, a lot of talk about homophobia, talk about -isms and phobias.”…One of those -isms is “heterosexism,” which a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes as a negative byproduct of “capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male-dominated privilege.”

Are you ready for the punch line?:

The government Our taxpayer dollars now funds about half of Public Allies’ expenses through Clinton’s AmeriCorps. Obama wants to fully fund it and expand it into a national program that some see costing $500 billion. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the military, he said.

Got that? 500 BILLION to create a mercenary civilian army of Marxists, and General Barack Obama wants to be their Commander in Chief.

MarkTheGreat on October 14, 2008 at 8:59 AM

I got this from a friend- why isn’t anyone asking these questions?

Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California . He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, eve n though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. ‘Barry’ (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan . During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a ’round the world’ trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia , next Hyderabad in India , three weeks in Karachi , Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate’s family, then off to Africa to visit his father’s family. My question – Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York . It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack – not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia ? It’s not cheap to say the least! &nbs p;Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia , he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year. Why Chicago ? Why not New York ? He was already living in New York .

By ‘chance’ he met Antoin ‘Tony’ Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria , and a real estate developer in Chicago . Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Decade’ by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association’. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School . Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School ? Where did he get the money for Law School ? More student loans? After Law school, he went back to Chicago . Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented ‘Rezar’ which is Rezko’s firm. Rezko was one of Obama’s first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago . In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with ’seed money’ for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwoood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans – Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko’s wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, a n Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama’s new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko.

Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama’s boss. She is now Obama’s chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz , Iran ! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy?

On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley, advisor to Obama, was ’sacked’ after the press found out he was having regular contacts with ‘Hamas’, which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran . This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama’s visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will ‘Take care of things’.

Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that where born in Pakistan ? They are in charge of all those ’small’ Internet campaign contributions for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in thi s country? Or could it be from the Middle East ?

And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on ‘This Week’ with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion said, ‘My Muslim faith’. When questioned, ‘he made a mistake’. Some mistake!

All of the above information I got on line. If you would like to check it – Wikipedia, encyclopedia, Barack Obama; Tony Re zko; Valerie Jarrett: Daily Times – Obama visited Pakistan in 1981; The Washington Times – September 7, 2008; The Times May 10, 2008.

Now the BIG question – If I found out all this information on my own, Why haven’t all of our ‘intelligent’ members of the press been reporting this?

Brigham Young said it very well about 150 years ago:

My experience has taught me and it has become a principle with me, that it is never any benefit to give, out and out, to man or woman, money, food, clothing, or anything else, if they are able-bodied, and can work and earn what they need, when there is anything on earth for them to do. This is my principle and I try to act upon it. To pursue a contrary course would ruin any community in the world and make them idlers.

Heiress on October 14, 2008 at 9:11 AM

The thing about trying to make everyone “equal”, “leveling the playing field” etc., is that it is NEVER an upward direction for society.

In the case of Obama’s plan, even a plumber is expected to sacrifice his income and standard of living to benefit….whom? That’s right….the intentionally uneducated and unemployed boozers who serve only as a source of votes for marxist candidates.

“Here’s a bunch of freebies and cash I just took from that guy down the street. You know how to vote from now on don’t you?

That’s very interesting. So Barack Obama has been sending hundreds of thousands of federal taxpayer dollars in earmarks to an organization that he founded and that his wife has been running — and nobody thinks that’s unethical or a conflict of interest? And this organization is, among other things, helping illegal aliens get food stamps and other welfare benefits that they’re not legally entitled to — so in other words, the organization is helping illegal aliens break the law.

Great use of our tax dollars, Obama. Too bad the MSM is so busy investigating important issues like the sex life of Gov. Palin’s teenage daughter, to take an interest in Obama’s breach of the public trust.

AZCoyote on October 14, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Got that? 500 BILLION to create a mercenary civilian army of Marxists, and General Barack Obama wants to be their Commander in Chief.

Obama mentioned his civilian security force as big as the military in a July 2 speech. I read about it in American Thinker, I think. This has received no coverage. I’m very concerned about it.

Ha…..excellent idea!

That would be a GREAT ad. Use the same guy as he has been vetted as a real person. The ad should show the clip, then bring the plumber and his two employees on and have them say exactly what you suggest…..beautiful!

Goodeye_Closed on October 14, 2008 at 9:27 AM

GOTTA REMEMBER

If paying taxes is patriotic,
then taking entitlements is unpatriotic.

Taking the wealth from anyone who gives it up under duress is stealing. Thieves steal. America is not the Sherwood Forest where the poor are denied opportunities to work and earn a living and denied food by the wicked King and his wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. AMERICA IS THE MOST CHARITABLE PLACE IN THE WORLD. Republicans are statistically much more charitable than Democrats who have become selfish with the premise “what do I get out of it” vs. “what can I do for my country”. So in order to meet the campaign political bet, “anty up” and “call” the game, Democrats legislate thievery in a ruse, referencing it as PATRIOTISM since “charity” already got blown out of their vocabulary by their own corruption made evident in records and polls.

It’s official. Barack Obama has hired Robin Hood as his economic advisor.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 13, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Didn’t Robin Hood steel from the tax man, not the tax payers? In a country where nobles weren’t taxed?
I think you are doing the legend of Robin Hood a disservice by associating him with the Obama campaign.

When you look in the mirror, you will not see your self-image anymore. You will see the image that Obama wants you to see. The world will change from color to shades of dull gray for us. Welcome to the Welfare State. I feel sorry for those that do not realize this. Obama will not grant you everything you asked for. You will receive nothing like what you want. He will say, “Do as I say, not as I do.”

Such a sad election this year. The systematic subversion of U.S. election law on the taxpayer’s dime.

Kevin in Washington State on October 14, 2008 at 10:39 AM

10% across the board. That is the maximum satisfactory tax rate.

lorien1973 on October 13, 2008 at 8:17 PM

If you through in all of the payroll taxes (SS medacade, medacare, etc.) and the part your employer pays on your behalf, what it the effective tax rate?
Maybe there are just too many degrees of freedom. Anybody for an amendment that reduces the nobs congress gets to twiddle to three: one tax rate on all income (payroll, dividends and capital gains), one yearly income level at which a higher tax rate kicks in on all of those, and that tax rate?

What’s maddening about that is if you have a really good system already going, socialism can help make sure nobody ‘fixes what isn’t broke’.

Marx introduction of socialism to create a static society is kind of like Einstein’s introduction of the cosmological constant to create a static universe.
Mathematically unstable.

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

Note to the Chosen One: If you really, truly want to give “everyone” a chance for success, then why are you not proposing the elimination of the (personal and business) income and other federal payroll taxes in favor of a nationwide inclusive sales tax aka the FairTax?

Would it not be more fair to allow everyone to take home their full paycheck rather than 60% if that as we do now?

As Thomas Jefferson said

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

>tied to a racist pastor/activist, communist terrorist, and Rezko
>biggest recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie.
>former member and central fugure for ACORN.
>member of senate for only one year before beginning presidential campaign….no other experience that qualifies him to be president.

How is it possible that this guy could get elected?
Throughout history this kind of record has caused landslides in favor of the opponent, but now we could possibly see a total reversal of logic.

Where’s Karl Rove when you need him?

Fact is, McCain simply does not seem to want to win. He’s a terrible candidate running a lousy campaign.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. I used to live by the old saw that every day above ground was a good one. Not any more, I hope I drop dead of a heart attack, because I’d rather be six feet under than live in The Messiah’s America.

“We need a Civilian National Security Force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded as our military.”

I used to be poor. I am not poor anymore. I’m not rich, but I do OK. What I learned about myself in my journey from poor to doing well created a base of self confidence that now lives in my heart. It is not the same as self-esteem, it is an awareness that I can succeed. I learned that when times are tough, I can handle it. I can sacrifice. I can pay my way. This further tells me that I can succeed again if it is all taken away. My question to Obama is: why would you take this journey away from others? Why would you give them the sweat off of someone else’s brow?

Oh wait – I now why: they are ballot cattle for the Democrats.

Honestly, where has McCain’s campaign been for four months? Complaining about lipsticks on pigs? Fricking idiots. They still can’t get the message on Ayers right. An election will be won (or stolen) by someone who never should have risen in national politics. And McCain and his staff are picking there noses.

I hope Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt are sent to a Soviet gulag when this is over. They’re idiots.

FOR POLITICAL GAIN!

That’s why dictators, kings, communists, and liberals do anything. Don’t be fooled by all the self righteous crap of wanting to help ease “suffering”. (I realize you already know this but…) Does anyone think AL Gore cares more about saving the planet than his place in history or his political future? Or his own sense of importance?

Rush played a clip of Obama talking to a young nursing student who was in tears explaining how she HAD TO PAY HER OWN WAY THROUGH COLLEGE (oh the horror!) and Obama was saying something to the effect of well, we’ll fix that, don’t worry.

Yea, just vote for liberals and they will give you cash for college, but don’t let that education garner you a high wage than their “ceiling” as it will end up in government coffers for redistribution where they see fit.

Tie the tax rate automatically to government spending: as government spending increases, so does the tax rate and vice-versa.
