Video: Obama’s redistributionism

posted at 6:55 pm on October 13, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Fox and Friends featured this exchange between Barack Obama and a plumber on the campaign trail this weekend. Want to hear a redistributionist explain his policy? Here it is:

Plumber to Obama: “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more. Isn’t it?”

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

It really doesn’t get any clearer than this, although a close look at Obama’s tax policy makes it almost as obvious. He doesn’t want to penalize your success! He just wants to take a big chunk of it and give it away to people he likes better.

Redistributionism. It’s what’s for dinner after January. (via The Boss)

Update: I’m not as pessimistic as that last statement sounds.  I just wanted to keep it punchy.  We still have a long way to go before this election is over.

And why these people think that my earnings are theirs to “spread around” is beyond me. Where the heck does he get off thinking that HE has the right to spread MY wealth around? He simply drips narcissism.

Good thing he’s not a socialist or communist or anything.

Here’s McCain’s opening to hit Obama hard with this at the last debate. Will he?

I’d like to say “bingo, this will sink Obama’s campaign”, but… I said that about 10 times in the primaries and learned my lesson. Things that would have sunk anyone else’s campaign and political career seem to just have no affect on people’s support for this racist, socialist putz.

Is it me, but the fact the B.O. smells like a half rotten salmon in the stream?

Does he really take those whom are middle class and running businesses to be that STUPID?

Ed, what about you? Are you around the 250K mark? WOuld it make a difference if B.O. lowered it?

I’ve been doing it for weeks. He is a socialist. Why deny the obvious?

lorien1973 on October 13, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Obama doesn’t seem to have a deeper understanding of the economy than what he expressed in the clip. That is, that an economy can be made “fair” if you take money from people who have too much, and give it to people who don’t have enough.

My daughter had this simpleminded idea when she was in the third grade. It’s terrifying that a serious contender for POTUS doesn’t seem to have even the most basic grasp of the way incentives and disincentives affect economic growth.

Cicero43 on October 13, 2008 at 7:06 PM

That’s catchy; “Spread THE wealth around” … THE wealth …

Individualism is staring into the darkest abyss, yet. Static thinking is overtaking all as the defeatists and self-haters grow in America.

For almost 9 years my wife and I scraped together every extra dime we could so I could pursue the dream of an invention I’d thought of and get that invention to market.

We put our lives on hold for those years while also putting three (Obama supporters)through college.. Now just when the invention is selling my debts look to be paid off soon and we can start to enjoy the fruits of our labor this socialist wants to take money we struggled for and give it to others… so they have a chance at staying addicted to government ..

I wanna scream at him how he is punishing me for our hard work and sacrifice… as he told his supporters not long ago.. to get in people’s faces..

I’d love to have 5 minutes in his face to explain how I feel..

McCain should run an ad:

From each according to their ability; to each according to their need.

With this quote spoken over it.

lorien1973 on October 13, 2008 at 7:17 PM

It all depends on what “too much” is. Do you really think, Mr. Cicero, that the likes of Soros, Burkle, or Buffet actually contribute anything to the economy? Do people, with thousands of times the wealth more than they would need to live a good life without another day of work, contribute to the solution, or are they part of the problem?

These people would tax us more in an instant, and would gut our retirement accounts in the same instant, if it meant more money to them. They have the power to do that — Soros showed that when he broke the Bank of England a few years back. I say tax them first and tax them hard.

What we are growing here is an aristocracy. They need to be reigned in ;-)

right4life on October 13, 2008 at 7:20 PM

Unbelievable. You’d think Obama’s response would alarm even the star-eyed college students.

I’m reminded of a very clever TV-ad campaign McDonalds ran about 20 to 25 years ago. A young guy got his first job at McDonalds. The ad showed some scenes of the kid working, and it cluminated with the kid reviewing his paystub with his dad.

In one of the best ad lines I can recall seeing, the kid looks up from the paystub to his dad and asks, “Who is this FICA guy? And why is he taking my money?”

Middle America needs to think twice about the wisdom of voting for Obama with his series of cotton-candy refundable tax credits in exchange for the much greater prospect of economic prosperity resulting from steady employment.

Look to Michigan to preview of Obamanomics.

unclesmrgol on October 13, 2008 at 7:17 PM

If you made the money legally, you should be able to keep it, minus reasonable taxation. Even if you’re George Soros.

It’s a matter of principle.

Cicero43 on October 13, 2008 at 7:21 PM

“Spread the wealth around”
Obama tells the ignorant ground
When you hear him say that
Lock up all you’ve got
And head for the mound

Where are my brownie points for being good on economic and all other matters?

Foxtrot working hard. Reduce your efforts and live it up. Let Obama take care of you. This is the real lesson.

Cody1991 on October 13, 2008 at 7:27 PM

When you get all he’s got, with such ease, it’s simple to redistribute your money.

A government which has the power to give you all, has the power to take it all away. (I don’t recall who said it, but it’s profound).

Wake up America, wake up!!!

Obama: “It’s not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too.

And when the plumber is punished, and lays off the plumbers “behind him” that he hired, what are their chances for success THEN?

Sorry, my bad. We’re not supposed to ask that question.

Does he really take those who are middle class and running businesses to be that STUPID?

upinak on October 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Yes. But even if he doesn’t take us to be that stupid, he’s counting on the fact that there are more of THEM (takers) than there are of US (producers). Numbers-wise, the takers can get him into the White House with their votes. They simply outnumber the producers by a wide enough margin that he can buy their votes by promising them he’ll steal our money and give it to them. They’re hiring a surrogate thief so they don’t have to break into our businesses themselves in the middle of the night and loot our stores. He can do it legally, though it’s still at gunpoint.

Hugh Hewitt is raging about this right now.

This is a BIG issue, I hope Mac (intelligently) addresses it
Wed. night.

Now now, be nice to Barry, McCain would not like it. Better to lose the White House than talk against Barry.

ladies and gentlemen, we may have come upon duh1’s equivalent of the dukakis tank moment — a statement so bad, so public, and so able to strike a chord with joe and mary q citizen that it can have lasting resonance. It is up to John to blow this open on Wed. …

Exactly! Frame it as “Joe Six Pack” learns what the middle class can REALLY expect from Mr. Wealth Redistribution. It sells itself.
