Barone: The thugocracy cometh

Michael Barone warns that a victory by Barack Obama will endorse his tactics in silencing critics, which should concern all non-leg-tingling media in this country. In fact, Barone points out that it will merely be the next step to the Left’s “progressive” march into killing free political speech — or at least that speech with which they disagree:
“I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors,” Barack Obama told a crowd in Elko, Nev. “I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.” Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people’s faces. They seem determined to shut people up. …
Obama fans jammed WGN’s phone lines and sent in hundreds of protest emails. The message was clear to anyone who would follow Rosenberg’s example. We will make trouble for you if you let anyone make the case against The One.
Other Obama supporters have threatened critics with criminal prosecution. In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Obama that were “false.” I had been under the impression that the Alien and Sedition Acts had gone out of existence in 1801-02. Not so, apparently, in metropolitan St. Louis. Similarly, the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Obama’s ties to Ayers.
These attempts to shut down political speech have become routine for liberals. Congressional Democrats sought to reimpose the “fairness doctrine” on broadcasters, which until it was repealed in the 1980s required equal time for different points of view. The motive was plain: to shut down the one conservative-leaning communications medium, talk radio. Liberal talk-show hosts have mostly failed to draw audiences, and many liberals can’t abide having citizens hear contrary views.
I’m not sure that Obama represents a revolution or even an evolution in this process, but merely the next logical step. We’ve already dumbed down the First Amendment to the point where it protects nude dancing but no longer protects political advertising in an election cycle. The most liberal of all environments, Academia, teems with “speech codes” that create thought police in ways that Soviet political commissars would find commendable.
The national media bears some of the blame for this. When a national campaign explicitly sets up an attack on a critic the way Team Obama did on Stanley Kurtz and David Freddoso, those who make their living under the auspices of the First Amendment might have been expected to take notice. Instead, they seem too enraptured in their own political biases to notice that one candidate for the highest office seems to endorse the notion that mobs should be able to silence critics. It doesn’t take a psychic to consider the future of a Department of Justice under the control of such a candidate, or its implications for a free press.
The best solution for bad speech is more speech, not speech codes, mobs shouting down critics, and legislative control of political speech in the public square. Yet we’re inexorably moving in that direction, thanks to the so-called defenders of free speech who only can muster any passion for it when they see a political benefit for themselves and their allies. In a real sense, the thugocracy isn’t coming, it’s arrived after a generation of advent.

The government can and will help you. We have a wonderful mandatory inpatient treatment program as part of the National Healthcare system that will teach you how to be a productive member of the collective.

I am a little more cynical about this than most. The dinosaur media are in a death spiral as it is. The only thing that helps TV ratings, newspaper and magazine sales, is controversy. If Obama wins, they will only make money by covering the controversy, which means MORE conservative voices and talking heads. Remember, Rush Limbaugh always says he made more money when Clinton was President than he did before or after.

People forget that free speech is not free–it is paid for with blood and sacrifice of our volunteer Armed Forces. And now there is the distinct possibility that the liberals will dictate what kind of free speech is legal?
This country needs to wake up. If elected, Obama and his liberal pals will attempt to destroy every freedom and right they can (except for perverted rights such as homosexuality, drug-use, pornography, etc.) in the name of “fairness”.

Actually what we are witnessing, is a Cresting of the Chicago Democrats- corrupt political machine. This is Chicago making a play on the entire country. They are not even trying to hide, they are out in the open. That looks like desperation time to me, not a great power taking over. The FBI with the help of Tony Rezko, is using janga like maneuvers to remove their influence. Chicago the center of Gravity for Barack Obama’s campaign. Who thinks Obama calls his own shots? Chicago, follow the Money, Rezko, Rezko, Rezko. ACORN being outed all over the Country. ACORN gets nullified and the Playing Field gets leveled again. If Barack Obama, is such a strong candidate, why would ACORN go to these lengths to rig the playing field. The MSM is complicit, I would look to see if someone is being paid off in those quarters also. There was a big stink in Indianapolis about 105% of the Voters being registered. Isn’t David Letterman from Indianapolis? After this is over a lot of people, who played the Barack Obama bias game, are going to have stink on them, the cloud will follow them around.

There is no journalistic integrity left in this country, with the exception of Fox News and some courageous radio talk show hosts. There is not one single newspaper or news service right now that is not following some sort of left wing liberal agenda. Once noteworthy new networks like CBS and NBC are now under the control of the mainstream media, as are the AP and UPS, and get their talking points from sources like D-Kos and George Soros’s MediaMatters. Anything so much as resembling a conservative voice is now either shouted down or forced into silence by bullying thugs and people who have left their brains in IDLE mode.
The only way this could be turned around right now would be for some fresh voices in the Conservative movement to be heard from loud and clear, as well as for some thinking people in the news media to finally grow a spine and start reporting the news honestly and balanced.
Until that time comes, expect more of this shouting down aspect to come from the moronic knuckle-dragging thugs who make up B.O’s so-called Truth Squad.

Conservative talk radio is what they’re after. If Obama is elected and the Dems retain Congress, they will rewrite the Fairness Doctrine to achieve that simple goal.
Although I honestly cannot believe that they are going to get a majority in Congress to vote for what could only be known as a “Hush Rush” bill. That would be worldwide news, and chilling news at that.

Not sure if aybody else has mentioned this, but here’s my 2 cents. Just for fun, lets combine the above article with this thought:
I can imagine a scenario in the next few years where the banks are nationalized to “save” the economy. Now imagine an evangelical church (or other politically incorrect group) attempting to get a loan to build a new church or expand, and being told they can’t get the loan unless they start accepting abortion and homosexuality. It’s coming, people. Your right to think, believe, and speak as you wish is slowly going away.

This one sentance alone should have been enough for him to tank in the polls. That one sentance. Stepping up and getting in a persons face is a threatening act. Getting in someone face is an act of intimidation. It is close to actually calling for a real act of violence and an act of harassment. It is not what American Presidential candidates go out and tell there supporters to do. Putting out the call for “Neighbors to attack neighbors!” It is something no one should ever be encouraged to do. And to your neighbor! Of all people??!! Your neighbor! In other words,, create chaos and tension even where there was peace! He is saying,, his elevation to power trumps the nice relationship you might have with YOUR NEIGHBOR!
Yet,,, where is the media?? No,, too busy with troopergate and trying to convince some Repubs that Palin is a bad pick. Has not the media tried in the past to hold talk radio or churches accountable for violent acts against homosexuals or other minorities?
Obama should have been called on this until he retracts this statement!
The name McCain may soon become synonymous with the name Neville Chamberlain. You don’t reach your hand out to a supporter of white racism. The only real threat Obama has within his own party is Bill and Hillary Clinton. After a year or so of power,, I expect Obama will turn his attention on them as well.

One of the Hot Air commenters (I forget who) provided me with the name of the man who repeated at the end of this comment in presentations that he gave after surviving dissent in Nazi Germany. I encourage you to read them and to forward them to people you know. This is no laughing matter.
In San Francisco in the spring, Obama echoed a sentiment that too many Americans vote for Republicans contrary to their economic self-interest. That may be so, though I believe at most it applies only in the short-run because Democratic policies are as substantively sound as cotton candy. But as far as one non-economic interest is concerned, Democrats have accused Republicans of being bullies for years, yet I don’t recall that Republicans have ever been accused of muffling dissent. I’m horrified at the cover that MSM is giving Obama and his goons. It’s an outrage, and I wish McCain–if he does nothing else–accuses Obama to his face of condoning this in his campaign. As you read these words, think of an incurious Obama enabler–especially anyone in the media–as the speaker:

This could very well happen with tax-exempt status. If you recall, Obama will require these kinds of accomodations for faith-based organizations to receive grants. Frankly, I don’t think religious organizations should be lining up at the federal trough to begin with. Of course, I don’t view paying taxes to fund charitable endeavors. Render unto Caesar what is his, and render unto the Lord what is His. I don’t think Jesus was looking for Caesar to funnel any dough back to his ministry after reducing it to a fraction through the inefficiency of government.

The media is stupid. Many of them will be the first to be replaced. Obama is not going to take too many chances with a media that might, at some point, feel like they are the ones in power. Obama is the one in power. Not the media.
Talk radio and blogs like this one will be targeted very quickly. If he has 60 votes in the Senate,, America is going to change, all right. Obama is holding back right now. We are seeing the nice Obama that has to fool people to get elected. Once he is in power with a 60 vote Senate, the real Obama will be embolden. The flames of racism will be fanned like never before. Slavery must be atoned for! Any white owned company or family that has an ancestor with any connection at all to a southern plantation or slave holding family will be exposed and attacked! Any property anywhere that had at one time had a slaves foot touch on it, will be considered no longer white property.

This is slightly O/T, but someone mentioned indoctrination above and I have no doubt the public schools are only going to get worse under Barry (and my teacher wife keeps me informed about how left they are already). I have an 11 month old daughter and I will make sure she grows up to value hard work, taking responsibility for yourself and she will always know how lucky she was to be born in this great nation. My question is, whats the best way to counteract everything in society telling her otherwise?
I know some of you must be doing this with your kids. If worst comes to worst and we get 8 yrs of barry in the white house, the thugocracy will be in power during some impressionable years for my daughter.

Barone didn’t read the U.S. Constitution correctly. It doesn’t prohibit individuals (or private companies) from restricting (or trying to restrict) free speech. It also generally does not apply to speech codes by universities.

Possibilities :
1) This woman is a drama-queen liar seeking attention.
2) The Obama campaign is using fake federal agents to intimidate opposition. A serious crime.
3) The Obama campaign has real federal agents that are sympathetic to their cause and will abuse their power. A serious crime.

The irony is that the most likely agent to attempt “something” is not an anti-black terrorist, but a Muslim terrorist who, “knows” that “Barry Soetoro is a Muslim” who now says he’s a Christian, and is therefore an apostate.
We recognize freedom of religion, but the “Religion California” doesn’t: “You can check out any time you like, but you may never leave”. There are over a billion Muslims in the world, and if even 10% of them believe it’s their job to take out apostates, that makes a hundred million.

Incorrect. The generality lies in the opposite direction. Since the majority of universities are in some part publicly-funded, such speech codes are unconstitutional. Groups like FIRE are finally taking on this staggering uphill battle to challenge these nasty fascist enclaves.

Political correctness was the first step in shutting down free speech and moving toward a Marxist society. If Obama wins with a majority in both houses, republicans will became a permanent minority. Until democrats pass enough laws to make the opposition extinct.
There are three fundamental rights that Democrats want to eliminate:
1. Freedom of speech
2. Right to keep and bear arms
3. Freedom of religion
After these rights are eliminated, we are in trouble.

It is surprising to discover how many ‘private’ colleges actually receive public funds – you accept public money, you accept public law.
Totally private universities are entirely within their rights to place restrictions on speech, arms, conduct etc – these become ‘terms & conditions’ of entering into these private establishments. Of course, there are limits beyond which the word ‘unconscionable’ will have relevance in a lawsuit ;)

Wrong, Ed. The MSM – along with their fellow travelers in education and entertainment – bear all the blame for this. The accelerating breakdown in our nation’s political discourse is the inevitable result of the soft-fascism that the American Left has been practicing for the past 40+ years.
The political views of the American public skew center-right; yet, all of the important information streams in this country are controlled by a hard Left elite – an elite that has spent the past 40+ years beatifying liberalism and Democrats whilst demonizing conservatism and Republicans. Those simple facts should set off alarm bells.
In this election cycle, we’ve seen the US news media drop any pretense whatsoever at even-handed reporting, to the extent that even media-casual, uninformed voters are able to see that the news media is trying to get Obama elected. And this uneven treatment of information is causing severe distortions across the political spectrum.
The American Left sees it’s worldview constantly validated in college classrooms, in movie theaters, and on the nightly news; therefore, they really believe that because this is what they see reflected back at them – day after day – that their worldview represents the objective truth. They don’t understand that they’re caught in an echo chamber, one where like-minded elites simply reflect back their own ideological beliefs under the guise of objective truth.
And the American Right sees it’s worldview subjected to a relentless, withering attack, with nothing even approaching fair treatment in the popular/political culture. And this election has really opened our eyes as the extent of the bias that exists, especially in our “unbiased” news media. In Barack Obama, we see a candidate who is literally saturated with questionable associations, any one of which would instantly and immediately be used by the news media to not only destroy a Republican’s political campaign, but would, in fact, be used to completely destroy their political career…yet the news media simply ignores it.
Barack Obama’s teen years were spent palling around with a radical communist? Yawn. I mean, surely the US news media would have the same reaction to a story that John McCain had been buddy-buddy with a Nazi “mentor” when he was teenager, right?
Barack Obama spent 20 years sitting in the pews of a church headed by an out-n-out racist crackpot? Snore. I mean, surely the US news media would have the same reaction to a story that Richard Butler had been John McCain’s pastor for 20 years, right?
Barack Obama kicked off his political career in the home of a pair of domestic terrorists who had tried to ignite a violent class war in this country? Zzzzzzzz. I mean, surely the US news media would have the same reaction to a story that David Duke had hosted John McCain’s first political outing, right?
Ed, we’re on really dangerous ground here, as these biases will lead to more and more severe distortions on both ends of the political spectrum. And since most of us Americans have lived pampered, ordered lives, we falsely believe that we are somehow immune to violent political displays. But all it takes is the right spark, and we may all be surprised at how quickly things can turn really ugly.
