The case of the missing McCain-Palin sign

When I was at the Minnesota State Fair in August, I asked the McCain team for a lawn sign. These days, campaigns deliver and install the signs themselves in order to make sure that they get displayed properly, and it took more than five weeks to get it. They finally installed a brand-new McCain-Palin sign on Thursday … but it didn’t last long:

Sometime last night, between 10 pm and 11 am this morning, someone stole the plastic sign from the wire frame. I think they wanted to steal the entire sign, as the wire frame was partially lifted out of the ground, but it must have proven too difficult for the thief. Oddly, it looks as though this was the only sign stolen in the neighborhood, as the other McCain and Obama signs I’ve seen were still there this morning.
I didn’t expect the sign to remain unmolested until Election Day, but I thought I’d have it for more than three days. But, hey — it could have been worse. I’d ask for another one, but it would probably arrive at Thanksgiving.
There are other things to enjoy, anyway. We spent the day on the St. Croix on a paddlewheel boat, having a great buffet lunch out of Stillwater and enjoying an unseasonably warm weekend. The entire family listened to a Dixieland jazz band, and we even ran into Brian “St. Paul” Ward of Fraters Libertas, my NARN colleague, on the same cruise with his family. Somewhat ironically, I’m wearing a Hines Ward jersey, which Brian’s family appreciated.

Update: From left to right: Ed, Marcia (the First Mate), David, Kayla (the Little Admiral), and Missy — with granddaughter #2, due in December.

Can’t you just go to your GOP county HQ and get more?
Sign abuse sure seems on the rise though. They’ve remarked on it on the radio several times in my state.

I like the tool shirt.
As for the sign, it’s probably disappeared along with McCain’s resolve on attacking Obama.

Ed, would it be too much to identify your family? Maybe everyone else knows, but I don’t. Either way, it looks like everyone had a good time. Very important in the atmosphere we find ourselves in.

Beautiful family Ed.
I live in a very liberal town and putting a McCain sign on my car or lawn will result in vandalism which I don’t want to go through. But if I do drive around, I place my bumper sticker on the rear window from the inside of the car.
Why are liberals such jerks?
jencab on October 12, 2008 at 7:41 PM
I’m unfortunately reluctant to put out my signs Republicans this year. Given the propensity of the neighborhood I’m in, I’d rather not have to deal with vandalism more than I’ve already had to (egged and paintballed cars, likely due to the W04 sticker on one of them).
Sad, the era in which we live.
Enoxo on October 12, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Official Poll of Signs:
My wife and I went from Cape Coral, Florida to Dunedin, Florida for the birthday of our daughter and son-in-law yesterday and returned today. The travel was city streets in southwest Florida, 110 miles or so of I-75 and I-275 and then back in city streets. About a 10 mile portion was through a minority area of Tampa/St. Pete general area.
Obama yard signs: 2
McCain yard signs: 5
Obama bumper stickers: 3
McCain bumper stickers: 6
Well, there it is. It’s official, the election is over. Can we swear them in now?
As a side note, there is a “Hillary” site – http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/clinton-supporters-sharing-evidence-for-rico-case-against-obama-campaign/
that claims “the polls are wrong”. They claim that current polls are severely over-sampling Democrats. Truth? Who knows….
Anyway, a little brain candy to ease any pain one might be suffering.

If I put a McCain campaign sign up on my lawn, I don’t think they’d stop at burning the sign. Several Obama signs up, but no McCain signs in my neighborhood.
It’s too risky in this neighborhood in downtown Culver City.
[That said, I have Obama supporters as neighbors and they are good people; they wouldn't take down my sign, and they respect my politics even if they don't agree. But we have lots of random non-neighborhood people walking around because of the movie theaters at the end of the block, and some of those are pretty uncivil.]

I put my bumperstickers on magnets so I can remove them when I am in a questionable neighborhood. I don’t know what the Obama campaign is getting so riled up about. Obama supporters are much more aggressive than ours.
Lovely family photo. Reminds me we need a new one. :)

I am thinking of doing a test to see how long a sign would last… I live next to an empty lot, and thinking of sacrificing one and puting it over there to see how long it would last.
Probably won’t last a day.

Gee Ed..wonderful family, but a boring lawn. My lawn, here in the mid-South,has a wonderful mix of a couple dozen types of green plant type thing-ees, none of which I have been able to identify over the last 22 years. However I am almost 100% sure they are rare botantical specimens blown in from around the planet. Little flower things and thistly things and some with little thorn like things. And some stay green in the winter, some turn brown, and some die back to the bare soil. Never boring, sadly.

Obama is running ads like crazy here in Montana also. Stupid fool, he’s down by 11 here and that is according to polling data created by a Liberal firm. Most of us hit the mute button as the first glimpse. Over saturated by that ACORN head.

McCain’s opening remarks at final debate:
“I know not where Senator Obama stands on this matter with regard to his supporters, but to my supporters, I encourage vigorous debate of relevant issues in the remaining weeks of the campaign. But I condemn any vandalism of Obama-Biden campaign items, and I condemn any vandalism of property sporting Obama-Biden campaign items.
“I spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war serving my country, and I almost died in that service. To my supporters, I tell you that I refuse to have you dishonor my military service, my Senatorial career, or the campaign I’m conducting with Governor Palin. You shame me and Governor Palin when you commit that kind of vandalism, and we won’t stand for it.”
BuckeyeSam on October 12, 2008 at 8:02 PM
I’ve been tempting fate here in Taxachusetts with McCain/Palin bumper stickers on all three cars, and a yard sign. So far, so good.
I’ve noticed very few bumper stickers and yard signs for either candidate, which is surprising, even in the People’s Republic of Cambridge, where I am once a week.
Nice picture, Ed. Glad to see all hale and hearty. We’re expecting our second grandson in December as well.

I’m getting so that I do the same thing, even on the car radio. I’m so sick of hearing these sweetly reasonable voices saying this dizzy propaganda over and over. I’m also getting polls which I was not getting before. Same sweetly reasonable voices speaking to me as if I were about 7. Still, I do appreciate the opportunity to try to influence the polls.
jeanie on October 12, 2008 at 8:06 PM
Well Cap’n, it could have been worse… like a tree or a cross burning on your front lawn…
I’m not the kind of gal who carries her politics in her car bumper, but in 2004 I placed a Bush/Cheney sign on my front lawn. Nothing happened to it – this being TX. But this year, I will NOT put up a McCain lawn sign anywhere near my house. The levels of violence reported elsewhere could happen here (South TX), and I’m not taking any chances. But I can always go back to the local offices of the Republican Party. (The ladies there are very nice.)
Oh, one thing about having a child born in December, based on experience here. I’d recommend your DIL to do her Christmas shopping way before then and have it all wrapped and ready before she heads to the hospital, because she will have no time after then, and her Christmas memories with baby can only be recorded with pictures and video – she will remember little of it, except for baby.
My daughter’s second birthday is on December 15. Were it not by the pictures taken during that time, I (mommy) would have remembered none of it. And my new baby is to be born in February – which means that I will have to deal with people calling her “little Cupid” or something… (Oh yeah, we found out last Wednesday we’re having another baby girl! A little sister for the big sister!)

The garbage men have been removing them in my neighborhood. I was alerted to this by the lifelong democrat, elderly neighbors who witnessed the guy get out of his truck and walk up and down the street.
peacenprosperity on October 12, 2008 at 8:07 PM
After an Obama sign went up down the street from me, we received an email from the neighborhood association saying that according to the by-laws, no signs other than real estate signs are allowed on anyone’s property…
Somehow I find that both over-reacting and loose interpretation of the rules, but I guess it’s also telling that Obama sign was offensive either to the board president who sent the email or someone in the neighborhood who lodged a complaint.
Did I mention our board president is black?
Nice looking family – looks like ya’ll were having a great time!

How excellent, to see pictures of friends that Debbie and I have only gotten to know through Cap’n Ed’s writings, the last few years. Looks like a terrific outing!
We went to the range, yesterday, and had a great time. We tried tips I’d gotten for new shooting stances with the rifle and the pistol. (Popcorn! (Unpopped) Makes all the difference.) Debbie was using her mind-control trick, like in “Wanted,” and she shot much better than I did. That’s not an offended “man thing.” I taught her to shoot, so if she’s better than I am, I must be a good teacher.
Your experience with your yard sign is a real shame. It’s another example of Obama supporters exercising their freedom of speach by suppressing yours. I’ll get a yard sign for us tomorrow at the local Republican campaign office, and tempt anyone to mess with it. Our German Shepard/Great Dane mix went crazy, last year, when neighborhood kids rearranged our reindeer yard ornaments. If he alerts on someone messing with our McCain/Palin sign, I’ll probaby just open the window so he can go give them “what for.” Or, I’ll get an opportunity to test the “aim 2 1/2 inches high to hit at 50 feet” bit of our rifle scope.
Cheers and beers,
Peyton and Debbie

Nothing surprises me about the “feral” left anymore.

Not bad.

Right — only Dems take down campaign signs. They’re the immoral ones, they’re the ones drawn to immoral actions as adults. Please — that’s just silly.
Are there jerks who take down campaign signs? Yes, indeed. Are they of both our major political persuasions? Yes, indeed. Google it, take whatever source you’d like (I didn’t want to use any particular newspaper source myself because that would just result in that source being called “MSM” and therefore covering up for the Dems). But please stop acting like you’re risking your life putting up a McCain sign because there are roving bands of Democratics looking to hurt your property and lives, while people who put up Obama signs never experience the exact same sort of vandalism that your side sees. They’re all jerks, no doubt — but there are plenty of them to go around.

Ed, that sign was probably stolen by a fellow conservative! Keeping as a souvenir! I hear the signs are quite conveted – I don’t think I would put one in my yard.
This is one reason I think McCain is going to win. The Obama/Liberal hostility/thuggery is palpable.
Queen0fCups on October 12, 2008 at 8:51 PM
I mentioned this before, but stealing signs is a trademark of the Dems. I had over seventy of mine stolen in one night. They found them dumped in the woods with hundreds of signs from other Republican candidates.
They use wreck-up/mischief night right before Halloween as a key time to steal signs. You might be best off taking your sign in that night.
Hening on October 12, 2008 at 8:54 PM
I went 2 weeks ago and McCain hdqts had NO signs or bumper stickers. I don’t know if they are cheap or what. They said they may have some in the next week, but I haven’t been back.
reshas1 on October 12, 2008 at 8:57 PM
BTW: Nobody dares to steal signs here in this part of the country; not on either side of the political spectrum. Everybody owns guns here. It’s simple, when a bad guy has to think about the fact that a loaded gun is likely staring him down, this dynamic prevents crime.
I did see an Obama sign that had a shot gun blast through the middle of it, but I have yet to hear about a sign being stolen.
Keemo on October 12, 2008 at 8:57 PM
Wow. I heard someone saying they couldn’t get signs on Rush’s show the other day and I didn’t know why. Thanks for explaining. I’ve never had that problem.
Spirit of 1776 on October 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Would it be too cruel to suggest rubbing the signs and metal frames with a raw chicken or turkey??
But I still like the idea of electrifying the signs. I don’t have a yard – I live in an apartment – but I’d sure like to try that.
ZAP! Like watching a bug-zapper!
tickleddragon on October 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Keemo — doesn’t the Obama sign with a shot gun blast through it sort of prove the point that it’s a bit silly to act like this is all a case of immoral Dems who steal signs, unlike their Republican counterparts who are respectful of the other point of view?
There are jerks on both sides, folks. Neither are right, but this sort of activity isn’t exclusive to one party or the other.

I have two McCain Palin signs out and one Yes On 8 sign…of the 3 I think the Yes on 8 is in the most danger. When we got it we were told to take it down at night! Yes On 8 is the proposition to protect marriage. As in MA and CT 4 judges ruled we had to accept homosexual marriage. A few years ago 61% of Californians voted on propsition 22 that in CA marriage is between one man and one woman. It is infuriating that 4 judges listened to a minority in this state and subverted the will of the people. This is the same thing that happened with Proposition 187 and now illegal immigration costs Californians 11 billion dollars a year (that’s all they will admit to). This year CA has a 15 billion dollar deficit.
