Video: Palin drops the puck, makes it out alive
posted at 8:21 pm on October 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
The report from the scene is that the reaction was mixed, although it doesn’t sound too mixed here.
She was treated better than the Redskins were, so, hey — moral victory.
Update: Not so mixed.
Update: Mixed. I like this, from the comments: “It’s Philly. They weren’t booing Sarah, they were booing Trig.”

“Let’s get the puck out of here!”
rmgraha on October 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM
Seriously, who thought that this was a good idea?
“She’s a hockey mom, so let’s get her to a hockey rink… in a notoriously liberal city in front of the most boo-happy fans in all of professional sports. How could this possibly go wrong?”
e-pirate on October 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM
It’s Philly. They weren’t booing Sarah, they were booing Trig.

At least they didn’t throw batteries or snowballs.

Sounds like Smith based his conclusion on a NYT blog and Delaware news site reaction. Might as well have used Think Progress.
amerpundit on October 11, 2008 at 8:30 PM
I mean, there are friggin Obama/Biden signs in the stands.
Biden lives like 15 minutes from this arena.
Philly is going to go for Obama with like 80% of the vote.
This was an incredibly stupid idea on the part of whoever set this up. It was inevitable. I mean, wow.

Sheesh. Much ado and all that.

First Hockey puck drop: Where’s Don Rickles when you need him?

Ya, why bother showing you’ve got some balls? Stick to places where they’ll line your path with rose petals!

I know this is only the latest in a long line of liberals trying to paint Republicans, such as Reagan and Bush as stupid, but it is irritating.
She has operated a company, taken on her own party and the oil companies, been a beauty queen and a mayor, she’s a sportswoman and she is the highest rated Governor in the United States!!
How many of her critics have a resume like that???
Star20 on October 11, 2008 at 8:34 PM
The Rangers used Scott Gomez, not their captain, for the faceoff. I believe he is from Alaska.
CanadianGuy on October 11, 2008 at 8:34 PM
My sentiments exactly on BOTH counts! Which is one of the reasons I hope the Eggles lose every stinking game they play! I would almost pull for Russia before pulling for the fans in Philly or their teams. Oh, I forgot Philly IS another Russia! Sorry if you live in Philly. I do not know how you do it. Anger at the Commies that have taken over your city so FULL of awesome AMERICAN history.

Here’s a barometer on the intelligence of Philly sports fans:
They think the only place you can throw some steak and cheese on a bun and have it taste good is in Philly.
Metro on October 11, 2008 at 8:35 PM
I second this !!! They have a Democrat beat (which was linked) where they hype Dems and criticize republicans; and they have their Republican beat where they criticize Republicans with information from Soros funded rags like Iowa Independent. Puh-leeze. Don’t link to them again unless you tell us where its from so that most of us dont’ click. I took Politico off my blog list.

Headlines like “Palin gets booed at hockey game” aren’t helpful.
Suggesting that this event shows she’s got some balls implies that she expected ahead of time to get booed, which suggests she probably shouldn’t have brought her kids.
This is Philadelphia. They booed Santa. They’d have no problem booing Palin.

TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Philly booed Bill Burr. Philly booed Santa Claus. If they were drowning and you threw them a rope, they’d boo it.
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Some, several, many, less than most a-holes boo-ed. So what? She’s still hot and gets my vote whenever on the ballot. As Joe Biden might say, God love her.
exdeadhead on October 11, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Strange, if I just watched the video without reading anything, looked just fine to me. Now let me read the commentary. OMG! OMG! OMG! (biting nails)

Brutal.
nickj116 on October 11, 2008 at 8:45 PM
What a bunch of flawed characters. Looking at the politico comments shows the sick minds that feed from the bottom over there. With people’s minds and hearts this calloused I could imagine judgment coming down on us from a God who has so blessed this country with freedom and wealth. So keep shaking your fist in God’s face you thankless jerks and he might give you an Obama to “save” you! Morons.
wepeople on October 11, 2008 at 8:45 PM
And those of you who are playing that reaction off as mixed are in some SERIOUS DENIAL. 80% booing, 20% cheering is not mixed.

Did you notice she gave the puck back to the other hockey mom. That would be a worthwhile souvenir. In her interview between periods not one politcal word. Just talked about 3 and 4 AM practices – OUTSIDE with her son.
That had to be cold!
PaKeystoner on October 11, 2008 at 8:48 PM
I saw Jonathan Martin of POLITICO on with Greta when the news came that someone hacked Palin’s e-mail.
Instead of reporting on the crime, he said Palin might be in trouble for doing governor work with her personal e-mail!!!
What the hell??!! POLITICO is for libs.
jencab on October 11, 2008 at 8:52 PM
I do not know about Philly fans first hand so maybe they hate her or maybe that is just what they do but running into the hateful Palin people when they are in small groups is a bonus. Their a bunch of tools, especially the college students here at MO State. Just stare at em and they run away like scared little squirrels. Yeah, I saw some in the wild downtown last night.
kahall on October 11, 2008 at 8:52 PM
Why is she not in Detroit (Hockeytown)? Duh?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 11, 2008 at 8:52 PM
Phili fans booed Santa Claus at an Eagles game and threw snowballs at him, these people are semi-retarded visigoths.
V15J on October 11, 2008 at 8:57 PM
Well yeah I have. Football and baseball. 99% of the time there is no booing.
I think this is simple an anomaly unique to hockey. And being a hockey mom, I’m sure Sarah wasn’t phased in the least. She should have busted that Ranger player right in the chops!
That would have won the entire state for her!
csdeven on October 11, 2008 at 8:59 PM
Piper looked so excited to be out there — waving to the fans… did anybody catch the Obama goons holding their signs and jumping up and down with thumbs down?
Sarah, Piper and Bristol have more class in their pinky finger than that entire arena of Obama-loving, America-hating, fans.

Do they not have a better shot on the Pittsburg side of state? why not do Hockey game their?

I was in Philly airport couple months ago, they were selling Obama gear, no McCain stuff in site. In LaGuardia they atleast had some McCain stuff for sell in stores too.
jp on October 11, 2008 at 9:02 PM
You’re kidding right? You know the only politician not booed at a game that I can recall? George Bush throwing out the first pitch at Yankee stadium after 9/11. Kerry was booed at Fenway for example. This isn’t unusual or unique to Hockey. It is to be expected.
TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Who cares. A lib bastion city state. Who would have thunk it.
Benjamin9 on October 11, 2008 at 9:04 PM
Boy — maybe Obama was right about this whole bitterness thing… Philly fans booing Sarah and kids must mean they (the fans) are clinging to something… I guess that’s what happens when you elect losers like Rendell, Casey and Specter over and over again. Enjoy Obama a**wipes.
Republican on October 11, 2008 at 9:06 PM
Pfft. Ever been to Philadelphia? I guarentee that Ed Rendell, Obama, or Biden could have rolled in there to cheers.
They should have sent Palin to a Hurricanes game. Or Columbus, or Florida. Or Nashville. There were lots of much better choices. In fact, I defy anyone to name a worse hockey rink for Palin to visit than the Flyers.
Having Palin appear and drop a puck? Good idea.
Doing it at Philadelphia? Terrible idea.
Campaign McCain ’08 in a nutshell.
e-pirate on October 11, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Yes. I’ve been to Philly many times and it doesn’t matter. At Pro sporting events politicians get booed. I just provided you with a link that shows an analogous example where Kerry was booed at Fenway (you know, his home field).
TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2008 at 9:09 PM
Exactly. But even then the booing was extremely short lived as far as I could hear.
The rest of the audio seemed to indicate a lot of cheering.
powerpro on October 11, 2008 at 9:10 PM
Hockey schmokey. It’s October in the Midwest, and that means football.
Ohio State had a home game against Purdue. I have a vision Palin and some of her kids coming out to midfield wearing some Ohio State sportswear and the crowd going crazy. But that’s me.
ESPN is broadcasting Penn State at Wisconsin. Same idea.
Earth to McCain: It’s football season.
BTW: in the omens department, the Chicago Cubs lost their playoff series, and the Chicago White Sox lost their playoff series. And now we have a noted Chicagoan in a third big race? For Chicagoans, do bad things really come in threes?

It was fine she showed class Philly did not. Like that is an alert the media moment.
Jdripper on October 11, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Honestly: who cares? She’s having fun even in tough venues, we’re going to lose, and Philly fans have demonstrated – yet again – why the police have actual jails inside some of their arenas. But at least they’re not unprogressive!
omriceren on October 11, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Palin was invited by Flyers owner Ed Snider to drop the ceremonial first puck of the season, and was joined at center ice by two of her daughters and the winner of a team promotion for the “Ultimate Hockey Mom.” And she even got a polite peck on the cheek from Rangers’ captain Scott Gomez, who is a native of Alaska.
I don’t know where the spin that the McCain camp can use any sporting event as a political opportunity comes from, but she was invited here and didn’t cower. You can easily quick on the above links and links-of-links to see there is furious reaction to damn her, most of it I suspect not un-coordinated.
Marcus on October 11, 2008 at 9:18 PM

hawkdriver on October 11, 2008 at 9:32 PM
There’s this amazing lack of attention to detail in the McCain/Palin campaign that’s just mind-boggling. Why would they send Gov. Palin to any venue where they can’t accurately predict the reaction she’d get? At a minimum, it’s unpredictable. At a maximum, it’s a disaster. How does Palin showing up at a hockey game help McCain get elected?
There have been more than a few incidents like this – I still haven’t heard a rational explanation for why a picture of Walter Reed Middle School was shown during McCain’s acceptance speech at the RNC, recreating the infamous Green Screen of Doom. All along the way, we’ve had this little bizarre moments. Sometimes they might be the media running with things they ignore on the Obama trail, I suppose. But some of them are just too big and too weird to explain. Can anyone think of a similar failure in stagecraft on Obama’s side?
As it stands, I suspect McCain is going to lose. (Although absolutely anything can happen in a campaign like this.) If that does happen, I’m desperately looking forward to the tell-all book about McCain’s campaign after the fact. Because there’s got to be one hell of a story lurking in this thing.

Apparently nobody is going to accuse Obama of sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.

Who cares what a-hole Philly fans do? I think its great she went out there despite the odds she’d get at best a mixed reaction in a Dem city. It shows guts, and you knew the media would spin it in the worst possible way. Of all the things to criticize the McCain campaign for, this ain’t one of them.
