Obama: Don’t let McCain “hoodwink” or “bamboozle” you

Delivered, with exquisite nuance, within two minutes of congratulating Maverick for toning down the rhetoric yesterday in Minnesota and within a few hours of Rep. John Lewis comparing McCain to George Wallace, a smear for which the campaign is demanding an apology. In fact, Obama used this same rhetoric against the Clintons before the South Carolina primary and was called on it by the New Republic, among other lefty websites. TNR contributor Cinque Henderson:
His use of the phrase is resonant. It comes from a scene in Malcolm X, where Denzel Washington warns black people about the hidden evils of “the White Man” masquerading as a smiling politician: “Every election year, these politicians are sent up here to pacify us,” he says. “You’ve been hoodwinked. Bamboozled.”
By uttering this famous phrase, Obama told his black audience everything it needed to know. He was helping to convince blacks that the first two-term Democratic president in 50 years, a man referred to as the first black president, is in fact a secret racist. As soon as I heard that Obama had quoted from Malcolm X like this, I knew that Obama would win South Carolina by a massive margin.
It’s code, in other words, used by The One when he wants to accuse his opponents of racism but doesn’t want to do it so directly that he’ll be held accountable. I’ll let Jonathan Martin take it from there.

Why would you think that’s what I’m saying? Did I say, “If he becomes President, nobody should disagree with him”? Did I say it’s over? I think you’re making a big leap there, friend.
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Obama steals lines from a lot of lousy sources. For instance, he’s particularly fond of that Michael Douglas/Annette Bening movie “The American President” — he repeats lines from that “president’s” speech quite a bit.
I think it’s interesting that he has repeated this Malcolm X line, after he was called on it during the primaries. Obama’s usually pretty careful about not letting his “non-threatening (to whitey)” black guy mask slip. Is his lead making him cocky (even more than usual)? I hope so. There’s still 3 weeks left, and so far he’s offered no substantive plan to deal with our economic woes — other than proposing more taxing and spending, which even the dimmest undecided voter must realize is only going to make our problems worse.

I don’t even understand the premise of your question. First and foremost, Chickenhawk is a term used by a fellow warrant to describe bravery, not cowardess. He said the missions he flew in Viet Nam were hard to go on because of the constant danger. But he sucked it up and went anyway. “I was a Chicken, I was a Hawk, I was a Chickenhawk”. The left made it into an insult to anyone who hasn’t served but supports a conflict. Even in their us eof the term, I have never thought everyone needs to serve to support the war, and I certianly welcomed support while we were deployed from “whoever” it came from.
I just don’t understand how chickenhawk applies to me feeling very alienated from a man who wants to be president who was decrying our behavior in the way we prosecuted the war and voted no to funding the war in the same time period my unit lost a CH47 and 5 good friends. It was shot down by a heat-seeking missile. Funding would have help improving a system we have to combat SAMs. More supportive rhetoric from liberal politicians would have kept our enemies from drawing hope and strength from our political turmoil.
We were tokens to him and his party.

Gawd, I hate to say this, but JT is right on the mark.
The POTUS is the only office elected nationally, and the only one responsible to the nation as a whole. The Prez is the only office, and the only person that can really unite or divide the nation so powerfully. Reagan united the country masterfully, and was the last one to do so. GHWB wasn’t bad, but wasn’t really good. Clinton played way too much partisan politics, and George W has been doing the same. The more we buy into ‘my prez’ ‘not my prez,’ the more divided we become as a nation.
It’s a dangerous path.

You’re saying your military service entitles you to a different set of rules from how the rest of us are governed. I disagree. I’m not saying you have to like whoever becomes president. But blustering about how he’s not your president is Kos Kid stuff.
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Ditto. But hey, hope for the best, plan for the worst, right?
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Look, the guy who gets elected is the President. They’ll have to accept it if it’s McCain, and we’ll have to accept it if it’s Obama. I think they have more reason to accept our guy, and less emotional capacity to do so, but still. That’s how it works.
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 6:04 PM
Jim, I understand your point. The way I feel about a BO presidency certainly puts me into a category that I dislike. The nutroots, as you say, have been castigating Bush every other second, calling for impeachments, etc.
Let me simply say that in my heart I will find it truly difficult, if not impossible, to accept Obama as POTUS.
There is nothing about BO that in my view represents the America that I know and love – nothing. And there is nothing in his views that represent what I want this country to be.
I do not like a candidate for POTUS constantly putting down this country. Jimmy Carter was/is a schmuck, but even Jimmah didn’t begin his candidacy maligning the USA.
I guess, we’ll just have to differ here. I will not turn my back on this country, but I will never, for damned sure, support a president who has no pride in the USA.
/and I may go expat for some time to cool off
Cody1991 on October 11, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Good grief.
He’s saying that if Obama wins, we will have to acknowledge that he’s the President of the United States. That he’s our President.
For the rest of what you’re saying — we are Americans. When have we ever been “happy slaves” to anyone? He’s running for President, not Emperor, Tyrant, or Dictator.
We are allowed to mock our President. From SNL to Lil’ Bush to the Daily Show to protesters marching with raunchy floats showing our President having carnal knowledge of the Statue of Liberty. Heck, we can even burn him in effigy.
Perhaps some of you are too young to remember — Bubba, a.k.a. Slick Willy, came in for his own share of mockery. It goes with the territory.
If we think the election was stolen by ACORN, we can even call for an independent prosecutor to investigate.
We can even elect Congressmen in 2010 who promise to impeach him.
What we can’t do is pretend that he isn’t the President.
That way lies anarchy.
ClintACK on October 11, 2008 at 6:24 PM

I think we need to look at something more important than Obama or McCain competing for the pandering Olympics. And I’m 100% McPalin, but that is not what I’m talking about.
This is been a gamechanging couple of weeks, and I don’t mean the election, but something much larger. This election is crap compared to what just happened to our free enterprise system, which is the core of all of our freedoms.
When that system collapses, there’s really not much left here anymore.
We have shown that when we face economic disaster, or strong social forces, we are happy to toss our Constitution in the toilet.
And Obama (and, to a MUCH lesser degree, McCain) had shown himself to be fully capable of doing some tossing.

Jim Treacher on October 11, 2008 at 6:26 PM
That’s really interesting — I had no idea.
Someone should do a You-tube release of this — a series of clips from various movies and music videos, followed by Obama using the same lines…
Could be a good follow up on the “Celebrity” meme and the “Empty words” meme…

Oh, and while we’re into the whole “quoting Malcolm X speeches” thing “The Chickens Come Home To Roost” phrase that Rev. Wright used harkens one back to this speech, where Malcolm X explained why President Kenndey had been shot.
I wonder if this speech made it into the movie.

I wish you could be on every thread on this blog, so you could combat the people who like to show up and slag on McCain day in and day out, and who think it’s all just a big joke, or test of ideological purity, or some other kind of insanity. Because while they think it makes them sound tough to scream that John McCain is a cowardly eunuch who doesn’t care enough about America to __________________, and thus they won’t be bothered to vote for him, blah blah…you know exactly what will happen to our troops in the field if Obama should win this election.
The only way Obama wins is if conservatives sit home because they think McCain isn’t one of them.
funky chicken on October 11, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Maybe it’s KOS kid stuff. I just think it might be time to fight fire with fire. But I’m not saying you need military service to feel like he isn’t your president. You can feel that way because a couple guys in Chicago got to vote 187 times in four different precincts. I’m just telling you why I’m so passionate. And fed up with liberal rules.
And I’m not trying to distance myself from what is rationally necessary. I just wonder how long it’ll take for folks to understand, “they” will never support a conservative president. In fact, “they” will not be happy until the Republican party is destroyed.
Jim, I like your blog and I respect what you write and the fact that you and TB can converse in Pig-Latin and…

AZCoyote – I can tell you exactly what Obama was doing. He did poorly in Philadelphia in the primary. He was trying to talk black to the black folks in Philadelphia. He should not have even been here today. Nobody is asking why he is in a place that went 80% for Kerry. He is telling us that he is not sure he is winning in PA and he needs close to 100% black turnout to win it.
rockmom on October 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM
IF Obama is elected he will be President of the US. That doesnt make him MY president just A president.
The whole basis of the constitution was that we have the right to disagree with our election officals and have the power to use free speach to attack them.
Obama can win the presidency but that doesnt give him a free pass on any critisim.

AZCoyote has it right. And this is important to me.
The Dems with a full house and POTUS will never lead us out our economic malaise.
This is another reason why I will not EVAH support a BO presidency. NEVER.
The surest way to jump start this economy is to start drilling, create jobs in the industrial sector, send a message to the Saudis that we WILL pump oil into the market, move forward with alternative fuel resources, etc.
The Dems will never do this. So, Treacher, you want to know why I will never acknowledge BO as my president?
Look to Pelosi, Reid and others. It’s all a sham.
Our country will not, I REPEAT: WILL NOT recover without economic stimulus in the private sector. It will not come from a BO presidency and Dem controlled congress.
You will not see anything but US decline with a BO presidency. Full stop.

And if there’s electoral fraud, which it looks like there damn sure is going to be, it should be flushed out. And Obama’s part in it should be shown, no matter how racist it might be. (That was sardonic humor, folks.) But if he somehow manages to get elected legitimately, them’s the breaks.
Mind you, I don’t believe we’re going to find out. I think more and more people are seeing through this guy, and the dummies who are covering for him, every day. But if they do manage to drag him across the finish line, we can’t just put our fingers in our ears and go “LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU LA LA LA!!” We’re adults.

Up until this election, Jim, I would agree with you. Every President gets into office with some significant lack of public support and his first job has always been to unite the country behind him.
Not this time. I got over Bubba and gnashed my teeth and said, “I told you so” for 8 years. The lefties did the same for the last 8.
This time, a line has not only been crossed; it has been pole vaulted over and denied that a line even exists. There is no question- Obama is nothing but a common criminal wrapped in a marketing gimmick. He has repeatedly called one of the most respectable man in America (whether you agree with him or not) a racist and frequently alleged the same for more than half the country.
The more time that goes by, the more Obama starts to show his true colors. The words are only half the equation… listen to the intentional pauses and cadence. He is speaking EXACTLY like Malcolm X. His normally “clean and articulate” inflections have been set aside in deference to a more rabble rousing tone.
Make no mistake- this thug is more a racist, rabble rousing, socialism promoting POS than Malcolm X, Rev. Wright, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton combined. He’s put on a well crafted, calculated show until now… but every once in a while, the curtain slips when he starts feeling confident.
There is no way that I will every except this racist felon as President. Never.

Why the hell hasn’t Obama been called out for the racist that he is? He gets away with calling others racist, yet his racism goes uncriticized. This is absolute and utter BS.
I fully understand the anger of those who go to McCain’s rallies. The more I read, the more I see that racist jackass on TV lying in his commercials smearing John McCain here in Michigan (I swear the f***er must have had commercials during every single f***ing commercial break during the college football games I watched today.), the more it angers me that Obama is not being exposed for who he is.
Funny how McCain has no problem smearing a good man in Romney, but won’t attack a bad man in Obama.
I’m absolutely disgusted with the fact that I have to vote for McCain, simply because I have to vote against Obama. This campaign has made me dislike McCain even more than I did before.

Cody…seeing as the deck is stacked aginst us…I really believe it’s up to us to do the job! (and try to save this country)
Hawk…no lie about PA! We’ve been at this with them for at least 6 months ACORN and Odinga I think will prove to be too much for a lot of Democrats…but since the MSM is in the tank for Obama it took us giving them the info for them to “see it with their own eyes” to get tehm to turn…

If BHO is elected that will be the end of all humor regarding the president. Any criticism of Barry will be immediately labeled as racist hate-speech. We will be politically humorless and critique free for four years.
Every party in power can look forward to losing and every party out of power can look forward to eventually winning. I fear Obama will gravely injure America. I find myself thinking how much better Hillary would have been for America.

In case nobody’s posted it, here’s the evidence of Barack “borrowing” from Malcolm:

Along with a number of others whose words have made their way into his speeches.

My list of actors who I will support and go see is much shorter than my list if those who I will not support and go see…

What breaks my heart is that he is such a race baiter…so many black people eat up every word out of his mouth…they jump up and down and are almost incited to hate white people…a complete step back for race relations is what the first black nominee for President is bringing on…by his own words and actions… The USA did not need this after so much progress has been made…

Most of the actors and comedians from American Carol are good.
Clint Eastwood was supporting McCain the last I heard, plus he’s just a great guy.
Anything with Tom Woodruff Jr’s work in it.
It’s a short list. I’ve gone to two movies since I got back to the states. One was Spiderwick Cronicles because SWMBO wanted to see it and the other was Amer Carol.

More from the PUMA sites…when we win we’ll owe them a debt of gratitude!

Ok, I found it.
I am the same way. We should all hold ourselves to the same standards that we wish the KOS Klowns would. I just don’t see the reason to make that the point of contention. Educate rather than castigate whenever possible.
Thanks for responding.
