Video: Spielberg and Lucas rape Indiana Jones

posted at 6:00 pm on October 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Are people seriously upset about this, or is this like that Mr. T ad where everyone laughs except two people and that’s enough for Controversy? How much more conceptual distance can there be between this and reality? (1) It’s a cartoon; (2) it’s a metaphor; (3) it’s a satire of other famous movie rape scenes as much as anything else; (4) it’s Indiana Jones.

Here’s the background on the episode. George Carlin used to have a line in his act about how he could make anything funny, even rape. His proof: “Imagine Elmer Fudd raping Porky Pig.” Close enough.

Update (Ed): I’m a big fan of South Park, but even the best satirists have their off days, and I think this was one of them.  It’s nowhere near as bad as their “A Million Little Fibers” episode, also known as the Oprah episode, but this was beyond the taste threshold.  The subplot, where Butters and Cartman pretend to be Chinese, was somewhat funnier.

In Soviet United States, circa 2009, we are all Indiana Jones. And Spielberg is our government.

Can any satire involving rape ever be funny or nonoffensive? Or am I the only civilized person here?

Is someone really upset about this? Really? Obama is about to send our country into a Socialist hell hole and someone is upset about a friggin’ CARTOON?!?!?!?

Where is my duct tape… my skull is about to explode.

Hell, I am disappointed they would post it on Hotair. The show has no redeeming quality…

It’s only the closest thing you’ll get to (semi) right-wing talking points in popular culture.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

spmat on October 10, 2008 at 6:15 PM

C’mon guys, this is South Park. We EXPECT this kind of stuff from them. It’s not like their the Andy Griffith Show or anything. Shock (and juvenile) humor, it’s what Matt and Trey do. They’ve been doing it for so long, we shouldn’t be acting so stunned.

Besides, Indiana Jones (the series) DID get raped, or at least my childhood did after watching Indy 4.

baxtrice on October 10, 2008 at 6:15 PM

Oh and seriously dude, the FP pic is creepy and gross. Please change it.

spmat on October 10, 2008 at 6:16 PM

I have to say after hearing Carl Cameron’s report on the McCain event today where he told supporters to be more respectful of Obama and that they shouldn’t be afraid of him and likely justice nominations should he win….well I feel like the cop in the window.

This race is over.

Spirit of 1776 on October 10, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Is it really that bad though? I have it in my netflix queue.

lorien1973 on October 10, 2008 at 6:17 PM

It’s the LA Freaking Times. The only people upset are Hollywood people and they HATE Trey and Matt anyway for “Team America” and ‘Tom Cruise, Come Out of the Closet!”

Which is why I love South Park.

I detest South Park too. Big Mel Brooks fan though. Give us a movie remake of Obama as Sheriff Bart and I’ll be there front and center.

Sheriff Obama: I’m needed wherever innocent Democrats cannot vote more than once, and children are afraid to walk the streets because of violent Palin fans, wherever a man cannot live in simple dignity without a subprime mortgage, wherever a people cry out for justice against Republicans and their tax cuts for the rich.

Crowd: [in unison] BULLSHIT!

Sheriff Obama: All right, you caught me.

Lincoln on October 10, 2008 at 6:21 PM

It’s a different time. It may have been that in the 80′s, Crystal Skull might have been a better movie.

Life is too real now. Two wars will do that to us. The best part is that we have real heroes to look up to.

I’d give up all the fake movie heroes for all eternity for one real one. Although, back in the day, a lot of our actors WERE heroes.

Interesting. I enjoyed Indy 4, and thought numbers 2 and 3 were terrible.

And, contrary to most South Parks I’ve seen, these clips weren’t at all funny.

It ended when McCain suspended his campaign.

I disagree, b/c there was opportunity there. But no FM/FM blame (thanks John!) so he dropped like a rock. Anyway, there’s really no point in arguing it now :(

Grue in the Attic on October 10, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Not at all. Matt and Trey are libertarians. Many episodes have a libertarian message buried in there somewhere. Sometimes Stan explains it at the end. Sometimes they don’t – this one is just a goof on Spielberg – which they’ve done in the past with ET and changing rifles to walkie talkies or whatever.

Religious people might not like what they do, but I appreciate it when they don’t get too heavy handed about what they are doing.

lorien1973 on October 10, 2008 at 6:24 PM

lorien1973 on October 10, 2008 at 6:24 PM

I’ll have to take your word for it then. I don’t watch the show, mostly out of principle, so I really have no idea what goes on there (other than Kenny dies in every episode, but everyone knows that).

All that’s left for McCain, really, is some hope that these hits come to some crescendo. Keep rolling out these guys that Obama has dealt with and make people say “man, this obama guy has a lot of criminals in his past” and that they turn to McCain.

But yeah, since McCain really won’t hit properly on FMFM – you’re right, there was opportunity there, but he blew it – I can’t see anything positive happening.

Just welcome our socialist overlords. Even McCain is resigned to defeat (by saying Obama will be okay and so will his judges).

Then being Canadian libertarians… don’t matter to me. South Park is going down the drain… and I haven’t watched it in years. Not worth the time.

upinak on October 10, 2008 at 6:32 PM

I’m a big South Park fan, and I rarely get offended by their over-the-top stuff. But I have to say this one crossed the line for me. The metaphor was funny, but the multiple portrayals of it were cringe-worthy (even though they were making fun of famous movie scenes). Like others, I find it extremely difficult to see anything humorous about the concept of rape.

But I’m not going to protest or write letters or anything. It’s South Park.

aero on October 10, 2008 at 6:32 PM

Butters liked the movie, aliens in a Indy movie = fail.

Tobias2012 on October 10, 2008 at 6:33 PM

If you go to South Park Studios online and watch the full episode, the Indiana Jones subplot is mostly a rip on Lucas/Spielberg and not the “FUNNY JOKE” that everyone is trying to make out of it. Cartman’s plot to stop the ChiComs is the humourous element in the Episode.

I think Matt and Trey just wanted to send a message to Lucas and Spielberg and seeing that they have a platform…Is is prudent? No. Of course not, but it’s satire and par for the course with Matt and Trey.

baxtrice on October 10, 2008 at 6:34 PM

I think a lot of us said during the primaries that McCain was a loser. He can’t win.

I had a brief stint of hope that he would be able to do it; but republicans have to get past these collegiate guys who think playing nice is the way to go.

Democrats go for the throat. Republicans play patty cake.

Here comes the heresy, I never particularly thought Carlin was funny. The one exception was his anti-green nuts rants.

I feel the same way. I think he was a funny SOMETIMES. For me, he made too much of his act about going after the establishment and it seemed, to me, that he was trying to force liberalism down your throat.

I loved his bits on baseball vs. football and the like, but he was, overall, not one of the greatest, in my opinion.

There are many comedians I feel this way about, so it’s not just Carlin.

TexasAg03 on October 10, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Here’s what I hate about the criticism of Crystal Skull:

1.) the alien crap was ridiculous-Not if you studied historical legends and conspiracy theories like who helped the Egyptians build the pyramids or who helped set up the Aztec civilation. It’s not that far off for an Indy movie.

2.) Hiding in a refridgerator during a nuclear blast-the critics say this is far fetched and could never really happen. You mean like jumping a mining car on a broken railroad track. Pulling a guy’s heart out of his chest and he lives for five more minutes afterwards, being able to wrap you bullwhip around a tree branch and being able to swing perfectly every time without it unraveling or never losing your g*dd*mn hat no matter what happens?

Come on, those people need to lighten up, it’s a stupid movie.

The last thing I wanted to be reminded of was Deliverance.

That movie messed me up for life. That “Squeal like a pig!” scene is burned into my brain… forever.

And I like South Park generally. Butters is by far the best.

lansing quaker on October 10, 2008 at 7:15 PM

What no one is remembering is that South Park predicted in 2002 (season 6, the “Free Hat” episode) that Spielberg & Lucas would screw up the Indiana Jones franchise. Back then, Stone and Parker were ripping on them for “enhancing” the original Star Wars Trilogy and E.T. by adding flashy effects (or changing whole scense) that robbed the films of their orginal charm.

The epitome of this in the episode was the thought that they would “enhance” (ruin) the Indiana Jones trilogy in the same way. Ironically, Parker and Stone were more right than they realized. Rather than change and then re-release the original Indy flicks with flashier effects, Lucas and Spielberg shot a whole new movie with too many flashy effects.

The Crystal Skull sucked, and yes, Temple of Doom sucked too, but at least it had the excuse of being made in the 80s. I suppose the lesson here is that even-numbered Indy movies are crappy.

This episode of South Park is, I think, Parker and Stone going “told ya so!” about Lucas and Spielberg, and ratchetting up their rhetoric to further drive their point home (heck, they killed off Spielberg and Lucas in “Free Hat”; I guess the only thing worse is to make them rapists).

Harpazo on October 10, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Here comes the heresy, I never particularly thought Carlin was funny. The one exception was his anti-green nuts rants.

Agreed. Carlin peaked in the 80s, 90s at the latest. As he aged he became increasingly unhinged about his rejected Roman Catholic upbringing. His stuff ceased to be funny and just became angry. Not that angry can’t be funny, he just wasn’t.

My god, people…it’s “South Park!” There is no such thing as “too far” on this show.

I watched the episode online yesterday (I forgot the new season had started until then), so when the premise was introduced, I was laughing. Although I liked the movie, personally, I thought it was funny. And I wasn’t offended because, hey, it’s “South Park.”

CCRWM on October 10, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Speaking as some one who, in a by-gone era had these genre definitions hammered into me, at the risk of sounding picayune, there’s a big difference between farce and satire. South Park is farce meaning its entirely low and base as in the Roman tradition of Satyricon. Farts, Poop, extreme sexual perversity and in the case of South Park, disturbingly mixed with children.

An example of the more rarified, higher form of Satire, for comparison, would be Dr. Strangelove. Some other examples of Satire from literature, Don Quixote, Gulliver’s Travels, Candide and Tristram Shandy.

Its hard for me not to see work of Alfred Jarry as the primary inspiration for Parker and Stone. When I was young I was a big enthusiast of Ubu Roi, a dog-eared copy of which, I still have, dating from 1975 and which was a hand-me-down from my older brother which was from his college days. The other plays, the ones Jarre actually wrote himself, when I finally encountered them in a college library, repulsed me to the point I could not finish them.

People have become entirely desensitized to all this kind of subject matter now but at the time, even though we thought we were just so, as never before wild, there were still places we just wouldn’t go. Bathroom humor was something we thought we left behind in 4th grade. As for the sexual perversity, especially of scat, or of the homo-erotic variety, that was simply not somewhere, you ever wanted your mind to go.

I won’t pretend to say that I’m above it all and espeacially of watching South Park. Indeed, like some serial voyeur of car wrecks, I’ve pretty much seen every episode thats been available to me and I don’t think Stone and Parker could do what they do, with out going to some the truly sick places, to which they are for what ever reason, inclined. From what I sense of them, their method would suffer, probably fatally from the slightest inhibition.

On the other hand, I don’t think we’re improved in this trade off, then to now. As was noted recently by George MacDonald Fraser, in his Daily Mail op-ed just prior to his death, we were so much freer back then, in so many far more important ways.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 10, 2008 at 7:32 PM

This was completely digusting and I can’t believe Allah posted it here on HA..a site I’ve recommended to many people…I wonder if this is okay with Michelle?

No one is forcing anyone to watch the clips. Anyone who chose to watch them was given fair warning of their content beforehand.

I’m a big fan of South Park, but even the best satirists have their off days, and I think this was one of them.

On the contrary: this was a very good day for satirists.

Here is where I’ll plug American Graffiti as the only worth while Lucas film. Here also, you will see, the fifties, recalled from a distance of 20 years, by people who lived it, portrayed not as some dark and terribly oppressive era as the contemporary post-modernists would have you think.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 10, 2008 at 7:55 PM

Certainly nothing to get excited about. South Park has their moments, this wasn’t one of them.

Barney Frank and the Bailout to the Rescue.

Lie back and think of fiscal sanity.

Mr. Joe on October 10, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Barney Frank riding to the rescue is not something most of us would welcome:

Barney To The Rescue!

Oh wait, wrong clip, well it is close enough to how Barney Frank would rescue things. Thanks but no thanks.

Mr. Joe on October 10, 2008 at 8:05 PM

Oh come on! It’s a cartoon.

The Stormtrooper getting raped by these two was also funny.

In Soviet United States, circa 2009, we are all Indiana Jones. And Spielberg is our government.

Make sure you move that… um… water pipe away from your mouse, Lorien…

“A Million Little Fibers”

Yah, Oprah (The Obama/Osama supporter) having a minge with an Australian accent and a backside named “Gary” isn’t at all funny.

It has it’s own Wikipedia entry, but no, no, it isn’t freekin’ hilarious.

Hening on October 10, 2008 at 8:21 PM

I can’t wait for the South Park episode when Obama sucks Cartmans’ b*lls.

Coronagold on October 10, 2008 at 8:21 PM

The problem I had with that episode was that I only chuckled 2 or 3 times. It just wasn’t very funny.
