The quality of rehabilitation is very strained; Update: “Rehabilitation” in 1998

Barack Obama has offered his latest defense of his political partnership with William Ayers. Let’s call it Ayers v3.0. First, readers will recall, Ayers was just some guy in Mr. Obama’s Neighborhood, whose adult children somehow went to the same school as Obama’s daughters. When that didn’t fly, Obama allowed that they had worked on “a board” together, but never really interacted. Now with the records of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge showing that Obama worked closely with the unrepentant domestic terrorist for at least a decade on two boards, Obama has a new explanation — he thought Ayers was “rehabilitated”:
In an interview with the sympathetic conservative talk radio host this afternoon, Obama offered the clearest explanation yet of how an extremely careful politician allowed himself anywhere near a former ’60s radical who would become a Republican target in this year’s presidential campaign.
Obama “had assumed” from Bill Ayers’ stature in Chicago, he told the Philadelphia-based Michael Smerconish, that Ayers had been “rehabilitated” since his 1960s crimes. …
“The gentleman in question, Bill Ayers, is a college professor, teaches education at the University of Illinois,” he said. “That’s how i met him — working on a school reform project that was funded by an ambassador and very close friend of Ronald Reagan’s” along with “a bunch of conservative businessmen and civic leaders.”
“Ultimately, I ended up learning about the fact that he had engaged in this reprehensible act 40 years ago, but I was eight years old at the time and I assumed that he had been rehabilitated,” Obama said.
First, it wasn’t just one reprehensible act. The Weather Underground committed many reprehensible acts, including the bombing of the Pentagon, attempting to kill a judge and his entire family, and plotting to kill police officers and their wives in New York. That last attempt failed when the nail bomb the terrorists were assembling blew up in their faces in a measure of poetic justice. And William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn were part of it all.
Obama says he presumed that Ayers had been “rehabilitated” because he was out in the open in Chicago. However, Ayers wrote a book about his exploits in the Weather Underground and notoriously danced on the American flag to show his contempt in a Chicago Magazine profile to promote his memoirs. He told the New York Times in an interview that ran on 9/11 that he “didn’t regret” his terrorist bombings, and that he wished he’d done more. Obama wasn’t eight years old in 2001, was he?
That dog won’t hunt. Obama wants us to trust his judgment, and now he’s trying to tell us that he had no idea that Ayers was still a radical intent on overthrowing the capitalist system and producing radical political change. What exactly did Obama think Ayers was doing with his school projects to produce political activists out of children unfortunate enough to get sucked into them — projects that Obama sent money as part of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge? Did he just give away millions of dollars to his political partner without once looking into what he was doing?
That sounds like judgment you can trust, doesn’t it? Boiled down, it says, “Trust me — I’m naive and incurious.”
Update: Maybe Obama didn’t watch ABC News or Connie Chung when his political partner and his wife appeared on national television in 1998, while Obama and Ayers worked on the CAC. Does this sound “rehabilitated” to you?
Not only do Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn reject the opportunity to express any remorse, Dohrn says she’d do it all again, with Ayers nodding. They don’t regret setting bombs, and they don’t regret committing terrorist acts. In fact, Dohrn says, “I wish we were more militant.”
Obama thought this was rehabilitation? Er, sure, just like he thinks they’re “mainstream”. His political partners bombed the Pentagon, and wish they had bombed more.
Thanks to Gateway Pundit for the video.

Ed, when did Ayers & his wife appear on TV with Connie Chung & regret that they didn’t bomb more?

The audio would be nice.
Obviously, their internals are showing this is getting traction, otherwise BO and his handlers would leave well enough alone.
The need to further nuance and explain this is as strong an indication of guilt by talking too much. Keep explaining, BO, the hole keeps getting deeper.

And it would be patently clear that Ayres was still a radical by the programs he directed Oslime-a to funnel the donations too.
What is the nest excuse? Oslime-a HAD to get in bed with these guys so he could do some good in the community?

Obama’s committing a political blunder here. A candidate never, ever, changes their story over something like this.
What’s most interesting to me is the idea that just because it was 40 years in the past when Obama was still running around as a Muslim the Ayers’ terrorism doesn’t count.

The purpose of turning school children into radicals would not be acceptable to most parents. This is especially true when associated with a radical who advised children to kill their parents.

Look, it’s well and good they are attacking him on Bill Ayers but why make it the only attack?
They should attack Obama on ACORN and his suing CitiGroup to promote subprime loans in community organizing days. It’s a readymade ad for the RNC and 527s. Where are they?
It took months of right wing anger to even bring Mccain to attack Obama. How long will it take for him to mention this fact?

Especially if the commercial emphasised that the Ayers children were already adults.

In the 60’s and early 70’s there were thousands of communist radicals like Ayres and his wife. Many of us were idealists and didn’t understand that they were preaching communism. We followed like sheep. A lot of us like my friends and I evolved into very conservative people. A lot of those who lead never changed but changed their approach. They learned to change the system from within. Teachers, prof. pols, news and the like. Their values never changed. Just their method. We are seeing the rewards of their efforts now. Don’t let anyone tell you these people are not dedicated communist. They are. I was there to see it and live it. I pray for our country. May Yahweh save us all/

Forget the Bradley Effect, I think we are going to see many democrats with half a brain who won’t be able to vote for this guy – but they will never admit it out loud (and it’s not because of his color).
My Mom hates the repubs but she has got to be smart enough to not vote for Obama. She’ll never admit it out loud, though.

The association is bad and it’s another Jeremiah Wright thing. Obama denies, changes story and then admits he lied. OK. And he ought to be pressed on it and hard. He’s becoming really sensitive about it, and his minions are seeking similar McCain associations, which suggests they are too are fearful about it.
But I think that the ACORN thing is even bigger.
Obama has been funding ACORN for a LONG time, acting as their lawyer and head trainer, maybe even teaching them how to commit the fraud for which they are so well known. Obama even lied about funding ACORN from his Presidential campaign- hiding $800,000 in payments to ACORN for “advance work.”
Advance work, indeed.
This is filthy stuff, and it needs airing. That must be why Obama’s team has been busy srubbing it away from view.

I wonder if the original application for the grant Annenberg Challenge is available? It would be interesting to see if the money was spent on the basis of the goals set out. Also didn’t I read somewhere the the funds had to be matched? Where did the matching funds come from? And doesn’t Mr. Ayers come from a pretty wealthy family? The media will never answer any of this.

The real problem with this is that liberals love a guy like William Ayers and a guy like Father Pfleger and a guy like Reverend Wright. This is the main reason they don’t see a problem with Obama’s associations with them. It has nothing to do with believing Barack’s explanations. All three of them are classic liberal heroes. These are the people who are going to stick it to the corporations and greedy fatcats and evil American Imperialism.
I was in college when the OJ verdict was read, surrounded by about 200 (mostly white) liberals (read: regular college students) who, just about to a man, cheered when it was read. Loud. Very loud. Meanwhile, I just wanted to crawl into a very small, very deep hole, because I’d naively thought everyone in the room was waiting for the same thing I was. I didn’t really understand it at the time. I do now.

She is doing such a nice job of being an attack dog and trying to break free from the campaign shackles. Her family, her career is at risk, she is gonna be destroyed by the liberals and the MSM and yet for the love of the country, she is doing everthing she can. And yet, the Mccain campaign is blowing it.
Obama is actually the weakest candidate of them all and yet Mccain won’t make use the tons of material against him. He wants to be honorable. Is honor is surrendering this country and the world to revived bout of statism?
Why in the world did the repubs nominate Mccain? Why? I hate him.

McCain gained traction in the primary when scads of Democrats crossed party lines to vote for him in New England – the liberal predecessor to Operation Chaos. His efforts were also helped by Huckabee, who spent most of his campaign viciously attacking Mitt Romney. Fred Thompson’s heart was never really in it, and I suspect that he acted pretty much as a stalking horse for McCain.

I’m not so sure about this one. I get the feeling that Fred was different in the fact that he hasn’t had the dream of being president for most of his adult life. He took a passive approach, believing that if the people wanted him to he would serve.
Much more akin to the spirit of George Washington, which was what I found so attractive.
If he was a stalking horse for McCain, it was simply an opportunistic or inadvertent use by McCain.

Sorry to quibble, but is Obama fricking kidding? As an adolescent, Ayers was nothing more than a spoiled twit. Today, he’s a piece of sh*t who hates this country.
Fixed.
I cannot emphasize this enough. Ayers’s anti-American sentiment plays very well to 40% or so of the country (including me), but under the current economic circumstances it unfortunately contains more than a hint of desperation. The important 20% of the country simply doesn’t care about that. Right now, they’re all too willing to go with “peace, bread, land.”
The connection between Obama and Ayers needs to be fleshed out to reveal what they (and some rubber-stamping fellow board members) did with $49.2 million from the Annenberg Foundation and matching funds from the City of Chicago ($49.2 million) and from private donations ($49.2 million). From what I’ve read, these idiots accomplished nothing, which is what needs to be highlighted because the Chicago Annenberg Challenge is Obama’s only executive experience. It appears that Obama collaborated with Ayers, while fellow drive-by board members slogged along, to squander substantial resources on useless programs.
At a time when the economy is tanking, we’re fighting two wars, and God knows what’s around the corner, do we want a community organizer more intent on furthering innumerable liberal ideological agendas with a veto-proof Congress that currently has an 8% approval rating? Do you think we’re going to get our economy and our energy policy on track while Obama is wasting time and resources on (1) his Global Poverty Act, (2) enacting “reproductive rights” legislation effectively outlawing state restrictions on abortion, (3) aiding unions to accomplish for the country what unions have done for Michigan, (4) making health care an inalienable right (what would our ancestors think?), (5) creating civilian national security force (from his 2 July 2008 speech), (6) teaching some form of sex education to young children nationwide, (7) requiring community service of children nationwide, and the like? Identify your own pet creepy peeve about Obama.
McCain needs to tie Ayers to Obama not just as an example of poor judgment in the past but as an example of how Obama will lead us poorly in the future. If Obama’s performance as chairman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge tells us anything, it tells us that Obama is perfectly content to waste significant (and scarce) resources on ideological nonsense while an institution–in that case, the Chicago public schools–remains in crisis. If McCain doesn’t do so, he may as well be talking about some kid he knew in his Indonesian school as a child.
FWIW: if you’ve never read the famous NTY article Ayers that ran on 11 September 2001, here’s the link. It’s only three pages long when you enlarge the type to 85%. It’s eerie to read it when you consider what happened that day.

Somebody needs to ask Obama flat-out, “When did you first hear of Bill Ayers and how? When did you first meet him and why? Why did he choose you to head up the CAC? What community organizing did you do in New York City? What involvement did you have at Columbia with Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven?”
If he was made to be honest, I think we would see that from the very beginning right down to now, he has gravitated towards and worked with communists.
His communist father, liberal mother, communist sympathizing grandparents, and communist mentor (Frank Marshall Davis, with communist roots in Chicago) gave him a good start.
At Occidental College he openly says that he associated with radical students AND PROFESSORS.
He went to Columbia University. Won’t release transcripts. Cloward and Piven (open communists) were sociology profs there, activating their students in motor voter registration at the time. Obama as poli sci major strongly advised to take sociology classes. He worked as a “community organizer” in Harlem – he says spending 4 months teaching Harlem blacks to recycle (his colleagues disagree). Bill Ayers attended school just down the street.
Hm. I want to see if Cloward and Piven had any previous connections with Ayers through SDS or Weather Underground. If so, it’s almost certain he was in contact with them and their efforts with students at Columbia.

If Americans knew that Cloward-Piven and their fellow activists such as Ayers and Obama were part of a plan to overthrow America through financial crisis – and that Obama’s legal harassment of banks who didn’t do affirmative action lending helped lead to banks tossing out time-proven lending practices that got us into this mess – I think they’ll understand that it’s all connected.
Lying to get elected is one thing. Creating a world financial catastrophe to get elected is another thing altogether.
justincase on October 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM
For a means of attacking Obama that’s not supposed to help McCain, the former sure does seem to spend an awful lot of time and energy reacting to it.
It might not get McCain over the finish line due to events that are well beyond the control of either campaign, but once things calm down this is going to stick in the minds of many. Get ready for some serious buyer’s remorse.

If Obama loses the media can blame themselves. They should have dug up the dirt on him long ago and The One could have apologized and charmed his way back into good graces. About a week or two ago, Technobarbarian posted this link, that essentially lays out this very same thing, as stated by an ex-KGB agent in 1984.
While there is no longer a USSR, he states clearly in 1984 that the leftist agenda is what is driving this. It would have been pretty easy to dismiss, in the absence of a conveniently timed financial crisis.
Worth a watch.

“I didn’t know about him”
“I never heard any of this.”
“I thought he was rehabilitated.”
Talk about consistency.
It’s hard to know about whom Obama is talking.

Why did Obama appear with Odinga in 2006?
drjohn on October 10, 2008 at 10:31 AM
She says “I wish we’d been more militant”, which is grammatically correct: a past counter-to-fact subjunctive, not a present.

In light of the update, I repeat my comment from 10:10:

drjohn: Odinga is Obama’s cousin and they are both of the Luo tribe.Obama sent Odinga $1M in support of his candidacy for “president” of Kenya. Odinga is a radical muslim and lost this 2007 election to the US backed party. Obama gave Odinga ACORN tips in the ensuing months (by phone and email) and slaughter of tribesman and burning of Christians in chuches compliments of Odinga ensued. Odinga got some sort of shared rule out of it.
Look what we’ve got in store for us if Obama loses here. Praise the Lord and pass the ammo.

Rev. Wright – black liberation theology (derived from marxism)
Bernadette Dohrn – Radical marxist / communist
William Ayers – Radical marxist / communist
ACORN – voter fraud
ACORN – role in current economic crisis
All of these individual issues are not separate. They are interconnected and they are all connected to Sen. Obama.
The fact that Rev. Wright preaches liberation theology which has roots in Marxism is SIGNIFICANT.
The fact that Dohrn and Michelle Obama worked together at the law firm where Michelle met Barack is SIGNIFICANT.
The fact that Ayers helped launch Sen. Obama’s career, and served on two boards with is SIGNIFICANT.
The fact that ACORN has committed voter fraud in the past, and Sen. Obama’s campaign has given them $800K through a third party to do perform bogus work, and is currently under investigation by the FBI is SIGNIFICANT.
The fact that ACORN has pressured banks into making bad loans through lawsuits, has received funds through suspicious circumstances, and scheduled to receive funds through earmarks in the bail out bill draft is SIGNIFICANT.
But the most significant thing of all is the fact that ALL ARE INTERCONNECTED.

cryptojunkie: good dot connecting…but don’t forget the ultimate cynicism: done to us thru an American
dream…owning our own home. We’ve been had. Like we say and do in Philly: “Hit ‘em!”

At least Bill O’Reilly is getting this out to a more democrat mainstream audience than may tune in to Sean Hannity or those who read the rightwing blogosphere. These people are not shy about stating their bloodthirstiness. It’s not like Obama would say to them, in 1995, or 1988, or 1983, Gee what the heck did you do? Were you on drugs? Did you regret it? And they’d say, Yeah, we were stupid, and were on some crap, but we’ve changed. And then Obama would say, Whew, cause if you weren’t rehabilitated then I couldn’t spend a hundred fifty million dollars. I might be agitated and not eat or sleep, and lose weight. And you know how thin I am already.
Noooo. If Obama asked (and he was hanging out with dreadful radicals and revolutionaries, only some of whom he would name freely) he would have received the same, or perhaps more bragging and unrehabilitated talk from these monsters.
The fact is he knew and DIDN’T CARE who he was dealing with. Or maybe he joined because he CARED ABOUT THEIR SHARED GOALS of overthrowing the system. Obama is a Trojan Horse, and we don’t know what is being carried inside of him.

McCain need to put the blame for FM/FM on who is responsible, name names.
He also needs to hit this Ayers connection hard.
He finally need to show that Obama was a member of the Socialist New Party.
This is about our only hope for winning.

Do you have any resources for this?

That’s right guys, keep talking about Ayers. Maybe it’ll eventually catch on!
Typhonsentra on October 10, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I don’t know why the series of lies about it doesn’t get more play. Even Ben Smith, who posted the article at Politico, doesn’t mention he got lied to twice.
That may be true, but Obama didn’t have to work on Education. Furthermore, there was a battle going on bettween Daly and Ayres at that time. Obama could have worked with Daley. Even so, there was no reason in particular Obama had to work on education. It wasn’t his area of expertise. Obviously.
Which leads me to my final question. Will someone besides Drew Griffin now press Obama on what the CAC funded? It was a failure that gave money to ACORN and Klonsky. Now that it’s out in the open, will reporters ask him about his very relevant executive experience? Please!!

WOW! Thanks for linking that! Everyone needs to send this out. It really, really puts in perspective the mindset of Ayers and Dohrn. They are extremely radical, and appear to still be that way. So much that it is evident in their speech. “Comrade”, “bourgeois”, “collectives”, and on and on. Radical communists that were in their own words, “plotting the violent overthrow of the government of the United States.”
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.
I can’t believe Sen. Obama could very well be elected President when he would not be able to pass ANY security clearance investigation.
