McCain booed after telling crowd to be respectful to Obama

The gloves are off on.

But then something weird happens: He acknowledges the “energy” people have been showing at rallies, and how glad he is that people are excited. But, he says, “I respect Sen. Obama and his accomplishments.” People booed at the mention of his name. McCain, visibly angry, stopped them: “I want EVERYONE to be respectful, and lets make sure we are.”…

And then later, again, someone dangled a great big piece of low-hanging fruit in front of McCain: “I’m scared to bring up my child in a world where Barack Obama is president.”

McCain replies, “Well, I don’t want him to be president, either. I wouldn’t be running if I did. But,” and he pauses for emphasis, “you don’t have to be scared to have him be President of the United States.” A round of boos…

UPDATE: Indeed, he just snatched the microphone out the hands of a woman who began her question with, “I’m scared of Barack Obama… he’s an Arab terrorist…”

“No, no ma’am,” he interrupted. “He’s a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements.”

He did the right thing, needless to say, but I’m not sure how this squares with Palin telling people at fundraisers how many supporters are urging her to take the gloves off. It all goes back to this morning’s post: McCain wants to win the election but doesn’t seem to have the stomach to get truly nasty, so he compromises by bringing up Ayers but not pressing the issue too much. Gotta commit one way or another, champ. As it is, it’s a sad, strange situation to have one candidate forced to stick up for the other candidate in front of his own audience.

Now that he’s defended Obama, I think it gives The One cover to call him out on it at the debate on Wednesday in the guise of, “John, I appreciate you trying to set the record straight on my behalf, but this climate you’ve created…” etc etc. In the meantime, here’s the only video I’ve been able to find thus far. Shuster aired the footage where the woman in the audience calls Obama an Arab a few minutes ago, and McCain really did almost yank the mike out of her hand before she could get going and make it worse. It’s not up on MSNBC’s website yet, but if I see it somewhere, I’ll update. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s the CNN video via TPM. Best I can do on short notice.

Update: Depending on how much press coverage this incident gets this weekend, I wonder if he won’t decide to abandon the Ayers stuff altogether.

Update: Cox’s transcript is wrong, incidentally. The questioner doesn’t call Obama a terrorist.

And I;m sorry for this outburst, but this troll has gotten the better of me.

wise_man on October 10, 2008 at 10:01 PM

We are all remembering why we never really liked McCain as our candidate. Picking Palin was the ONLY thing he’s done since the primary to give us any hope to get excited.
I think McCain is a great American, a slightly below average Republican, and a pretty weak campaigner. His “base” was always a fawning media, who have turned on him like no dog ever would. (Sorry to insult dogs by comparing them to the media.)
Were it not for the fact that the Dims have put up the scariest, most socialist/Marxist candidate any of us have ever seen, I’d likely have thrown up my hands by now as well.
But this is too important and Obama is too freaking dangerous. Turn your anger into motivation. We don’t have to love McCain to do what’s right for our country and our kids. We have to stop the fraud that is Obama.

You really are the most frustrating person here, even more so than the liberal trolls pretending to be conservatives.

Yeah, I can see why you would think that. I prefer truth to spin, I don’t think the world will end if we criticize McCain (inhouse), I reject bullies vigorously, and I’m as honest as I can be. That makes me fun for some to talk to, and irritating for others.

I was commenting on the text on the top of this page. I have no reason to think that it’s not accurate. I’m not ‘defending mccain’ because he’s mccain.

More power to you. Doesn’t take away the humor. (You’ll note I didn’t say you were stupid or an ass or whatever names you have and will call me in the future), it’s just ironic and thus humorous. Laugh with me.

McCain doesn’t have to agree that Obama is an “ARAB TERRORIST” to win this election.

Yep. No argument @ all on that point.

Personally, I don’t think that Urkel has the snap to wire together a bomb or send computer viruses into Pentagon mainframes. That’s above his rather low paygrade.

Besides, he doesn’t have to, since, as President, he will have access to the entire Federal Government in order to destroy his enemies.

He is still a very dangerous, totally unvetted SOB, and we should be angry as hell and upfront about it.

It’s not “humorous” when I read the words on the top of the page just like everyone else and reply to people who are commenting on these words. I see now that there is an update that the transcript was in error. It does not change the fact that this is the subject we are talking about.

Simply commenting on this is by your definition, defending McCain no matte the facts. and you are wrong. I am challenging peoples comments about McCain that are either not true, or opinions that do not have any discernible merit to back them up. You call this mindless supporting and defending of McCain, and thats not the case. My God, this is a conservative website, and I am talking about the conservative candidate who won the republican primary and is going after the most liberal senator of 2007 and you’d think by some people’s comments, such as yours, that I am some mindless drone supporting McCain no matter what.

And you know this is not the case. You bring up old history between me and you that is from 3 months ago and hasn’t happened since. Are you going to bring this up again as you enjoy doing three years from now? You are being childish. misrepresenting me and you are quite frankly being an a * Hole with this action. TexasJew on October 10, 2008 at 10:19 PM

BUT, we also need to let the crowds know that they have to stay under control. Threats of violence and calling Obama a terrorist is going to hurt, not help us. The media is using it against us. So, let’s go to the rallies and cheer for the candidates but let’s take our self control with us.

Lynn2008 on October 10, 2008 at 9:54 PM

I don’t disagree… however, is there actually video or audio of the alleged threats made against Obama occurring at these rallies? The reason I ask is because we have video of the incident where a questioner is alleged to have called Obama an Arab terrorist, and the allegation turns out to be false.

By presuming that these allegations are correct and condemning people who may not actually exist we are playing into MSM/Obama’s hands. Make them prove their allegations first. Absent that, I have no reason to believe that anger expressed at these rallies is anything other than an expression of what is happening to our nation right now; with two crappy candidates, an economic crisis and those responsible still safe in their seats of power.

Like you did.

wise_man on October 10, 2008 at 10:22 PM

The increased anger of McCain’s crowds is due to the fact that neither the media nor McCain himself is willing to take Obama on. It isn’t dishonorable to tell the truth about a man who is hiding the truth about himself and his record. As a matter of fact doing so, in the face of great pressure not to is far more honorable and decent than not doing so. If McCain showed some stomach to give us some real straight talk, his crowds wouldn’t feel a need to act out. They’d be satisfied that at least someone was being honest.

This episode brought home the fact to me that McCain is going to lose and probably lose big. In one episode he managed to deflate his base, reminding us why we disliked him so much in the first place, gain no votes and give a nice pr boost to Obama, to boot.

This Presidential race is a mission for which John McCain is not the right man. I wonder if he will able to look back at his “honorable” campaign when he sees that it has handed this country over to the most dishonorable ideology in its history.

That only happens in bizarro world.

She’s a goofball. She completely doesn’t get him. It also shows a lack of ‘deep’ or even ‘wading pool’ level comprehension on his part…Maverick indeed.

Seems to me that the subprimes are more about the trouble coming in the next wave of foreclosures and the credit crisis that is caused by that since FM/FM used lower capitalization.

Easy answer: Because we’re the parents. Liberals are like children who cannot function without someone to take care of them, and throw tantrums when they don’t get their way.

Sometimes, though, I think our side is getting pretty close, because a lot of us are dangerously close to our fed up limit.

capitalist piglet on October 10, 2008 at 10:40 PM

John, Obama’s people are going to fight you during the game, they’re going to fight you in the parking lot after the game, they are going to follow you home and just when you think you’re safe in your bed, they’re going to stand in the street and throw rocks at your windows.

If you don’t understand that, you are going to lose this election.

Trust me- I’d love to reserve my judgement until election day, I’d love to believe there is an Oct. surprise, but I don’t. I had every faith that the Clinton’s had something up their sleeve, but time and the polls have shown otherwise. And I’m not a big believer in the poll accuracy, but when I see people like Karl Rove and Brit Hume looking defeated, and then McCain himself gives Obama his next commercial, it’s realistic to move on into the next stage of grief. Oh- and by the way, this comes from someone who just sent the RNC money, YESTERDAY!

Civil people tend to just fight wars and skip the whole rioting thing. I think that comes from our british forefathers.
Rioting is very uncouth and not productive
War tends to produce more results and is orderly(you wear red and I wear blue and we start shooting )

“Nobody has remotely suggested that Obama is a Terrorist…”

Really?

What about that mysterious trip he took to Pakistan in 1982 on an Indonesian Passport?

And his ties to murderous thug aspiring dictator Raila Odinga, a man responsible for the enthic cleansing of thousands of non-Muslims in 2007 post Kenyan elections? Raila and Barack are best of buddies, distant cousins even.

I’m not prepared to say Obama is a Terrorist, but he damned sure pals around with enough of them.

And I want to know THE FACTS! about his 1982 trip???

Many Americans feel that way. And if the Republican Party ignores that sentiment in the electorate, than these voters will find a new home, like say the Libertarian Party or the Constitution Party.

These townhalls seem strangely off-kilter to me. Most of us are aware that everything we say is being scrutinized by an insane press accusing us of using code words, code clothes, code sports references…..and now suddenly we have roudy creeps blatantly yelling “terrorist” at Governor Palin and old ladies calling Obama an Arab…. Obama thugs are astroturfing the audience.

McCain takes Obama on all the time. Watch his videos.

Not in person, he doesn’t. Not in debates. The disconnect between his ads and his debate performances is jarring. It makes McCain look like he only has the guts to get tough and say these things on video but they’re just too embarrassing to say in person. Obviously McCain is the furthest thing from being a coward which makes it all the more remarkable that he should come across that way. I think what is really going on is that he is ashamed to unleash on Obama. Why he should be ashamed to tell the truth will probably remain one of the universe’s great mysteries. And it is also the reason he will lose.

I disagree…and no, if that is the Republican party ‘objection’ to Obama (along with his being an ‘Alien Being’), then it’s going to be a very small party indeed in 2012. Read what I said about Obama…if you think he’s an Arab terrorist and ‘most Repulicans’ decide that is the ‘issue’ with him, then get ready for 8 or more years of his rule…get a clue, please. We’ve already lost this one, let’s at least make 2012 count…if that is even possible after he ‘fixes what is wrong with’ the Constitution.

kakypat on October 10, 2008 at 10:46 PM

To their point, he can look presidential, and still lose the election to Obama.

I would, however, like to point out that while most liberals will vote for Obama, and most conservatives will(hopefully) vote for McCain, it’s a distinct possibility that McCain can impress the people who might end up deciding this election. Undecideds and moderates.

You see, these people don’t think the same way we do. We want to see McCain take a chunk out of Obama’s hide. And while we might want to see that, they would be turned off by this. McCain has said repeatedly that Obama is his opponent, and in this case (see above) makes this clear. Obama is not some enemy to defeat on the battlefield. While I disagree with what he says that Obama isn’t that bad, and I think that Obama will wreak havoc on our nation, at least as much as Jimmy Carter if not worse, I can understand why he wants to let his ads do most of the attacks, and be extremely civil to his face, and as you say, look as presidential as he is. Palin is the pit bull who is doing some of the attacks right now. We’ve got just more than three weeks to go. A lot of water is going to flow under the bridge.

Regardless of whether he meant it that way, I thought he looked and sounded very weak- It’s terribly depressing.

anniekc on October 10, 2008 at 10:29 PM

I agree with both anniekc and nocomme1. McCain’s unwillingness to engage head-on the legitimate questions about Obama’s character & ideology, and (thus) how he would lead this country as its chief executive officer, does not make him look civil or more mature — it makes him look weak.

And a great many voters (sadly) cast their ballots on the sole basis of their subjective evaluation of a candidate, not on policy positions or platform.

McCain has enough things physically wrong with him that he already looks and moves like he’s old and weak. The only appearance of strength he could possibly have, then, is strength of emotion — passion. He doesn’t look or sound passionate about being the President (that was the rub against teh Fred!, wasn’t it?), and passion’s really the only chance he had left to show himself strong.

Whatever he may believe about the virtues of working together and bipartisanship, the more important thing is that the VOTERS don’t believe that. And they see his unwillingness to represent what THEY believe in as weakness.

Independents aren’t unaffiliated because they believe strongly in the power of bipartisanship; they’re independents because they think both parties are full of losers and cheats!

If McCain wants to win (questionable, IMO), he needs to show that he’s not a loser.

Striking out on a fat pitch high in the zone does NOT show you to be a winner.

Odinga is his cousin. He went to Africa, and visited with him. I read all the original accusations that he was “campaigning” for him, yadda yadda yadda, but I didn’t see any solid evidence in that regard. I’m not defending Odinga, mind you…

Secondly, yes it’s true that Obama is uncharacteristically silent about the details of his Pakistan trip, but does the mere fact that he went there make him a terrorist or subversive? This is way too tin-foil hatty for me, especially since you don’t have a shred of evidence to demonstrate what the purpose of his trip was, or who he saw. All you have is very speculative speculation.
