McCain booed after telling crowd to be respectful to Obama

posted at 8:25 pm on October 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

The gloves are off on.

But then something weird happens: He acknowledges the “energy” people have been showing at rallies, and how glad he is that people are excited. But, he says, “I respect Sen. Obama and his accomplishments.” People booed at the mention of his name. McCain, visibly angry, stopped them: “I want EVERYONE to be respectful, and lets make sure we are.”…

And then later, again, someone dangled a great big piece of low-hanging fruit in front of McCain: “I’m scared to bring up my child in a world where Barack Obama is president.”

McCain replies, “Well, I don’t want him to be president, either. I wouldn’t be running if I did. But,” and he pauses for emphasis, “you don’t have to be scared to have him be President of the United States.” A round of boos…

UPDATE: Indeed, he just snatched the microphone out the hands of a woman who began her question with, “I’m scared of Barack Obama… he’s an Arab terrorist…”

“No, no ma’am,” he interrupted. “He’s a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements.”

He did the right thing, needless to say, but I’m not sure how this squares with Palin telling people at fundraisers how many supporters are urging her to take the gloves off. It all goes back to this morning’s post: McCain wants to win the election but doesn’t seem to have the stomach to get truly nasty, so he compromises by bringing up Ayers but not pressing the issue too much. Gotta commit one way or another, champ. As it is, it’s a sad, strange situation to have one candidate forced to stick up for the other candidate in front of his own audience.

Now that he’s defended Obama, I think it gives The One cover to call him out on it at the debate on Wednesday in the guise of, “John, I appreciate you trying to set the record straight on my behalf, but this climate you’ve created…” etc etc. In the meantime, here’s the only video I’ve been able to find thus far. Shuster aired the footage where the woman in the audience calls Obama an Arab a few minutes ago, and McCain really did almost yank the mike out of her hand before she could get going and make it worse. It’s not up on MSNBC’s website yet, but if I see it somewhere, I’ll update. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s the CNN video via TPM. Best I can do on short notice.

Update: Depending on how much press coverage this incident gets this weekend, I wonder if he won’t decide to abandon the Ayers stuff altogether.

Update: Cox’s transcript is wrong, incidentally. The questioner doesn’t call Obama a terrorist.

The above quote says it all, this is the true definition of a wingnut. Read his words. Look past his spelling errors. This guy is a racist and is full of hatred and was most likely sleeping the last 16 years while this country declined through 8 years of Clinton and 8 years of Bush and years of GOP Congressional control.

Any other of you haters out there want to chime in before you all disappear in November?

November 2008 is going to be almost as good as November 2006 was.

Monkei on October 10, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Dream on moonbat. The problem with the years you mention are to much government… too much spending… lack of any conservatism. McCain can kick his base under the bus all he wants and he will still win. Obama is having to deny almost everything in his past…. it will soon reach the point that he will be having to deny what he ate for breakfast every morning…

I can safely say that although Mitt Romney would have been a poor VP choice with McCain as POTUS, he actually would have been a better POTUS choice with Palin as Veep.

Two outsiders with more economic weight to the ticket. They together would have change.

I had the same reaction as you guys, and I hate that he said don’t be scared of Obama. However, I am sure that the gloves are about to come off. If we go down, we will go down fighting and with the house on fire.

If McCain had responded otherwise, its very likely that they’d put him on the defensive for the last debate, essentially sealing the deal for Obama. For now McCain must focus on economic policy. Worry not, Karl Rove’s protege is going to unleash hell the day after the debate and I’m sure they’ve been preparing for this the whole time.

El_Terrible on October 10, 2008 at 9:36 PM

The election is not over, but with the MSM covering for Obama and all the missing gaps in his past, it will be difficult to convince Americans to vote for McCain as an uncharismatic but safer pick than the dangerous marxist Obama.

If McCain doesn’t rev it up, he risks losing millions of votes to Libertarian Bob Barr. Barr was tanking after the Palin pick. Now he’s back up in the polls. In Virginia, Georgia and a couple other states he’s now at 4 to 5%.

Barr and his running mater Wayne Root are attacking Obama as an outright Socialist. They could very well steal McCain’s thunder.

The biggest problem about Obama is the lack of knowledge about his background.

When people see Obama as having a decent chance of winning but they don’t know enough about him, only what he selectively allows people to know, there is fear.

When you couple that with his alliance with Ayers, Wright, etc. people get angry. They know McCain for what it’s worth.

But, McCain is absolutely lame. Obama is not a decent man based upon what is know about him and as conveyed by what his wife thinks of America. And Obama is not an accomplished man…far from it.

If this is true and he takes that kind of vote away from McCain (these are obviously votes that would not go for Obama), then we introduce the possibility of Clinton ‘92… well less than 50% of the vote but a win. I sure hope McCain’s campaign has factored this 3rd party bullsh*t into their plans….

Well, what are ya gonna do?! Can’t live with em,,, can’t live without em!
Darn Hicks!
Well,, very sad. This woman did sound like a goof ball,, and people should not be out there yelling “Kill em.” It was probably good for McCain to tell people to remember to be respectful,,, he could have said something like,, “I am not going to run a campaign the way my opponent runs his. I am not going to stoop down to the Democrats. I understand all your fears and I love the passion,, don’t stop the passion,, but lets be careful about some of the words we choose.”
It is stupid for him to just discount the fears of many Americans, he may have covered himself with the media, true,, but I pray he does not now do a reversal and undercut Sarah.
I think all the excitement is getting to McCain. He’s not used to it and doesn’t know how to handle it,, meanwhile,, I am sure he’s got people whispering in his ears how embarrassing some of these people are to the campaign.
I posted back around Oct 4 my hear that at some point, McCain might undercut Sarah Palin. I still hope I am wrong,,
Sure,, this woman was getting off, but,, he still could have done a better job of sympathizing with the general fears many people have about Obama’s background and about the creeping socialism in America,,while still not squashing her and saying how wonderful Obama is. I mean,, make up your mind.

He was snide and nasty in the debates because he was facing mmembers of his own party. He won’t behave that way toward any democrat that I’ve seen. Remember, this is the man who referred to his own base as bigots over a immigration policy disagreement.
And whizzman, the 80% is a lifetime average. His record over the last 8 years, if I gave enough of a sh*t to check it is something like 65%. I guess if prayer in school or flag burning becomes hot button issues, McCain will be manning the ramparts with the GOP. However on the current (and potentially expensive) issues of immigration and global warming, McCain is a suckwad flaming lib. I know you want to stick up for Campaign turd sandwich, but try to throw an occasional bit of truth in there, just so the propaganda doesn’t get too thick.

I haven’t read all the comments yet, but here is a thought:

Truthfully, McCain had no choice but to “defend” Hussein in those circumstances. While I do believe he is being TOO nice in the campaign, for him to do absolutely anything else would have gotten him fried. Too many people do not realize that we are fighting in a PC-controlled environment. We may not like that. We may think it shouldn’t be that way. But it IS that way. And we have to act in accordance with it. Things can’t change overnight, but too many lazy selfish conservatives/Rightwingers just act like it can. And in doing so, they make costly mistakes, and then get disillusioned when things don’t go their way.

It took decades to get it this bad, and it’ll take years and decades to get it back.

Think, folks! Think!

LOL.

Maybe somebody ought to put a Romney mask on Obama.

JiangxiDad on October 10, 2008 at 9:46 PM

I know hotair disagrees, but I think MCCAIN KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING.

Face it. Emails about ’secret muslim’ and jeremiah wright and pics of obama in a turban have been out for half a year. The image of obama as an empty suit dilletante have been there all summer (paris, britney)

I really think that JMac is microtargeting the true INDEPENDENTS that are UNDECIDED… and face it, if wright didn’t turn them off, neither will a replay of Pfleger.

I still trust McCain knows what he’s doing, and I still think he’ll win. Obviously, polls undercount the GOP, and Mac is counting on scared out of their mind REpubs + unsure/not racist/somewhat racist working class dems + PUMA women/men + undercounted ‘chaos’ dems or gop that are legally registered as dems to push him over the top. I think he figures that Obama’s “new registrations” won’t be enough in specific battleground states (cmon, every black person in Atlanta voting triple and Obama still would lose Georgia), and him peeling off a Penn, a Mich, a Wisconsin, some great lakes state, will lead him to victory.

I’m not just denying things. I honestly think he’s losing because the market is insane. But it appears that 8000 is the floor for the Dow. I just think he’s NOT down by “12″, I think he’s down by about 5.

Barring a stupid performance in the debates, McCain will win. THe undecided voter will see drooling media crowning the one, more celebrities crying on live tv to vote for obama, and more emails of Farrakhan calling “messiah” will circulate. No ‘troopergate’ will stick, an when push comes to shove, the arrogance of teh obama campaign, even from door-to-door freaks “Obama Mamas”.

November 1 rolls around, Obama up by about 2, but McCain’s tv spots of “not ready to lead” sink in. The DOW is back to 10000, the Asian markets have rebounded, and mccain has hammered about the need for personal responsibility. The ‘undecided’ type is still impressed with McCain working across party lines, even though that undecided hates Bush. Obama is nowhere to be seen except talking about Bush.

Election day, those undecideds have a choice: a positive tested warhorse in McCain, or the manchurian Obama. 60% of Indies pick McCain.

The flip side is… had mccain gone nuclear, ranting ‘get off my lawn’ about ayers and things PERSONALLY right now… that same election day decision, indies would be turned off.

I know a lot of indies that like mccain’s positions on ‘no to gitmo’, ‘no torture’, ‘fix climate change’, even though those make me vomit with rage. Face it, McCain is a MODERATE… and the MODERATE will win this election.

McCain knows what he’s doing in my opinion. And he’s going to win.

battleoflepanto1571 on October 10, 2008 at 9:46 PM

Here’s a thought. Most of us are voting for McCain because he’s the only choice we have. I’m, sure, at this point, no one would mind if he dropped out and let Mitt or Fred take over from here…so long as they kept Sarah. Hell, that move may even pick up more swing voters.

I don’t listen to Savage. Is he pushing a meme that Barry is an “Arab terrorist”?

I listen to Rush, Bennett, Ingraham, Medved, Hewitt, Boortz, Hannity and Beck. Not a one of them would refer to Obama himself as a “terrorist”.

I think this is a set up. Note what Barry said yesterday:

“I don’t think there’s any secret about this,” Obama said. “My father was from Kenya so I’ve got an Arab-sounding name, and I think most people know that I was raised by my mom who was from Kansas, which is why I’ve got a Kansas-sounding accent…When people are purposely doing this in connection with a theme the McCain campaign’s decided they want to pursue in the past few weeks, which is to go after me personally, in some pretty aggressive ways, then, you know they’re trying to distract from the economy.”

Look to see the word “Arab” repeated often by Team Barry. It’s a pre-emptive strike against Khalidi and Mansour, who don’t make Barry a terrorist, just an typical Useful Idiot marxist fool/tool.

The new theme will be:

We’re not picking on him because he’s black (that old dog does not hunt), we’re picking on him because he has an Arabic name and has some friends with Arabic names.

Look – the other thing a lot of your aren’t recognizing at all is that, if McCain somehow pulls this out, he’s going to have to govern a deeply divided nation at a time of legitimate crisis and war with the Congress very likely controlled by the other party.

Even if inflaming or merely tolerating personal hatred and alarmist fear from the Republican rank and file was a potential winning strategy, a presidency won on that basis would only barely be worth having. It would essentially be an election won by liberalism, if not by its flawed standardbearer. And if he loses such a campaign… even worse. In addition to having been ideologically defeated, conservatives will have been morally defeated in the eyes of the nation.

Just how many decades do you want to spend in the wilderness – or how bad will things have to get to bring you back? Or have you really already completely given up on the country?

CK MacLeod on October 10, 2008 at 9:50 PM

Its human nature to get disillusioned and do self defeating things when frustrated.

I wish more people could step back for a moment and think, before launching with the “McCain doesn’t want to win!” BS.

wise_man on October 10, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Well, I am definitely voting for him. Just like I voted for Dole in 1996….get the picture? It won’t turn out that well this time though…Dole was actually tougher than McCain.

I liked what Rush said this week,, “we’re gonna have to drag McCain kicking and screaming across the finish line!”
Exactly how to do that, well,, he didn’t say.

It when something like this.

Do ya know the difference between Bill Ayers and Timothy McVeigh ?

Ayers beat the rap, became a teacher and has an alliance running for President.

McCain knows what he’s doing in my opinion. And he’s going to win.

battleoflepanto1571 on October 10, 2008 at 9:46 PM

Yeah, we know. What’s happening is that we didn’t want the guy in the worst way, then we reluctantly got on board, then we were desperate for him to fight and win, and now we realize that if/when he wins, we’ll have to continue fighting–him. Frustration is what you’re seeing.

McCain needs to stand up like a man and state the facts about Obama.

BUT, we also need to let the crowds know that they have to stay under control. Threats of violence and calling Obama a terrorist is going to hurt, not help us. The media is using it against us. So, let’s go to the rallies and cheer for the candidates but let’s take our self control with us.

Mccain had to do what he did when the woman called Obama an Arab. The media backlash would have been intense if he did not say what he said.
People like me are in the bag for Mccain right now, he is after these extrodanary soft headed creatures called independents or moderates or something.

You guys will get plenty of red meat the last 72 hours of the campaign but I fear it may be to late.

Buffet understands the inner workings of the American capitalist system and high finance probably better than anyone alive. Buffet predicted this entire meltdown triggered by complex derivatives. Buffet has reviewed all of Obama’s fiscal policies and plans. Anyone who says that they know more than Buffet is suffering from delusions of grandeur.

Yeah Warren Buffet the guy who wants the death tax re-instated because he believes the heirs “didn’t earn it”, but the government did? Unfreakinbelievable.

I’d wager the “0bama is an Arab” woman was a democrat plant… If not, she is still too stupid to be allowed out on her own. He could have said it a little better, but I don’t really have a problem with the way he handled that.

His answer to the man who was afraid of what a President 0bama would do to the country, via his potential Supreme Court selections, only ONCE AGAIN confirmed what I’ve been saying all along.

Few people believed me about McCain a year ago when I told you what he is like. Ok, that’s fine… you needed to learn for yourselves.

Most of you didn’t believe me yesterday when I told you the same thing, for the hundredth time, despite nearly continuous, overwhelming evidence that I have been correct all along.

Many of you don’t believe me now, when I tell you again that McCain’s whole values system can be defined in three words:

Senatorius Uber Alles.

McCain cares more for his Fraternity Buddies in the Senate, than he does for us.

Knock in the doors, lock up the city
Track him down through this town
And be quick about it…now!

I was commenting on the text on the top of this page. I have no reason to think that it’s not accurate. I’m not ‘defending mccain’ because he’s mccain.

McCain doesn’t have to agree that Obama is an “ARAB TERRORIST” to win this election.

and you call this “I’d defend him regardless.” You are an a*hole.

wise_man on October 10, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Wise Man……..Nobody on this blog has even remotely suggested Obama is an “Arab Terrorist”. So don’t go re-inventing history on me and the rest of us, o.k.?

If the man (McCain) doesn’t have the balls to challenge Obama for everything he apparently stands for, and challenge him on a daily basis, then get off the stage. We’ve lost this election.

Wise Man, trust me, I am NOT writing McCain off per se. However, I am writing him off if he refuses to go head-to-head, and toe-to-toe with Obama to show the world ‘The One’ is long past being simply an “empty suit” – Obama has in fact been shown to be “the emperor with no clothes”.

Simply put, If John Mc isn’t up to that task (and that is what it’s going to take for him to win), then spare me any and all apologies you want to make on his behalf; I’m not listening…….Nor are the thousands of people who are booing him at his rallies for his gutless (and may I say ‘erratic’) campaign “strategy”.
