McCain ad: “ACORN”

posted at 3:00 pm on October 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Team McCain has decided to open another line of attack, this time in a new web ad titled “ACORN”. At 90 seconds, it won’t get any TV air time, at least not in its present form, but could signal a new attack strategy to tie Barack Obama even more closely to the present financial collapse:

ANNCR: Who is Barack Obama? A man with “a political baptism performed at warp speed.” Vast ambition.

After college, he moved to Chicago. Became a community organizer. There, Obama met Madeleine Talbot, part of the Chicago branch of ACORN. He was so impressive that he was asked to train the ACORN staff.

What did ACORN in Chicago engage in? Bullying banks. Intimidation tactics. Disruption of business. ACORN forced banks to issue risky home loans. The same types of loans that caused the financial crisis we’re in today.

No wonder Obama’s campaign is trying to distance him from the group, saying, “Barack Obama Never Organized with ACORN.” But Obama’s ties to ACORN run long and deep. He taught classes for ACORN. They even endorsed him for President.

But now ACORN is in trouble.

REPORTER: There are at least 11 investigations across the country involving thousands of potentially fraudulent ACORN forms.

ANNCR: Massive voter fraud. And the Obama campaign paid more than $800,000 to an ACORN front for get out the vote efforts.

Pressuring banks to issue risky loans. Nationwide voter fraud.

Barack Obama. Bad judgment. Blind ambition. Too risky for America.

This makes a good ad for the web, but Team McCain had better start figuring out how to get this into 30-second slices. They need to get this story out to American voters quickly if they expect to see a pushback on Obama’s momentum.

How do we get retribution from the MSM after this is all over for theri serious dereliction of duty in this election cycle? Had they been doing their jobs as journalists Obama would not be the nominee now or ever.

All McCain’s good content is web only. Why?

Every blogger that supports McCain needs to post it and then maybe get some free airtime as a result. Radio talkers will play it for sure.

I say make an ad comparing Obama/Rezko and the mobbed up bank to the Sopranos episode where they did the exact same scam. That will relate to portions of the American public, on how Obama the “Community Organizer” is a crook

I don’t see the “ambitious” line of attack working too well. You have to be pretty ambitious to run for president. Especially if you do it twice.

One can only hope it’s not too late for the truth.

This is the story the MSM should have told, would have told if the perp candidate were anyone but Osama Obama.

I’m not sure they can ever regain their credibility after this election. Don’t think they deserve to.

deedledee on October 10, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Good ad but too little too late and too many Obama followers and even a lot of Independents simply dismiss this and Obama’s Ayers ties as a “non-issue” and instead focus on the economy… as if Obama’s plan to somehow tax this nation into prosperity will somehow work. Everyday it seems Obama’s poll numbers go up and the DOW drops more and more in an effort to beat his capital gains tax hike.

This makes a good ad for the web, but Team McCain had better start figuring out how to get this into 30-second slices. They need to get this story out to American voters quickly if they expect to see a pushback on Obama’s momentum.

This is how the McCain campaign works: They collect the arguments – they listen to the base (much more than they’re given credit for) as well as to conservative intellectuals and pundits – the decide on a tactic and the timing. The web ad WILL be boiled down to one or more TV ads, by both the campaign itself and the RNC, and the content will be incorporated in a McCain speech. It will very likely be part of next Wednesday’s debate.

Every such decision is a judgment call, and the reason for upgrading ACORN now is clearly that the news has moved from back pages to the front pages, even amidst the worst week for the Dow in its history. If the dust settles – or even if it doesn’t, but people accustom themselves to this kind of news – this issue will loom larger. It’s intended to be before the eyes of the electorate precisely at the moment that they and the media, backed by the polls, are trying on the Barack Obama empty suit for the last time, looking at the country in the mirror, checking the seams and the price tag, temporarily tuning out the salesman.

Once the facts are out, if the country says “what the Hell, let’s go for it anyway,” it won’t matter. If it had already decided it didn’t care about ACORN (and others), making it do so now would have been a lot harder.

Not that I like Hillary, but I have confidence that the Clinton motivation is personal. Obama looks hand picked to be the stooge to bring extreme leftist changes into Washington.

I say a good ad for McCain would be:

“At a time when you are struggling, you see your 401K and retirement going up in smoke, Barack H. Obama is able to purchase THIRTY MINUTES of INFORMERCIAL in the amount of $Price Here. Barack says that he is for the middle class, that he understands our struggles. And he shows this by paying $Price Here to tell you so.”

“Barack H. Obama, dangerous for your wallet, dangerous for the country.”

“I’m John McCain and I have found my stones and I approve this message.”

Of course, keep piling on with Acorn and Ayers.

HornetSting on October 10, 2008 at 3:16 PM

HornetSting on October 10, 2008 at 3:21 PM

ACORN is not just attempting to steal the election. They are doing so on the taxpayers dimes, which happens to be millions of them, through government grants.

Not only that, they are costing local and state taxpayers across the country hundreds of thousands, if not millions, because of the added effort required by by County Clerk’s to weed out the fraudulent registrations.

And that’s not the end of it either; the cost to investigate and prosecute these criminals will run into additional millions paid, again by local, state and federal taxpayers.

These criminals in community organizer’s clothing are a curse on society, trashing every civil obligation and rending the social fabric of our nation. Each and every federal, state and local justice department should track them all down and throw the book at them.

Splice this part out into a 30-second TV ad, and BINGO! This would paint Obama as partially CAUSING the current financial crisis, therefore he can’t be trusted to fix it!

Obama’s poll numbers are up mostly due to blaming the financial crisis on Bush and “deregulation”. If voters see that Obama is part of the CAUSE of the problem, they’ll turn to McCain as the solution, especially if McCain runs another ad about trying to regulate Fannie and Freddie in 2005, and being blocked by Senate Democrats.

The “bullying banks” line is golden. It’s taken awhile, but the McCain campaign is on to something here.

The web ad WILL be boiled down to one or more TV ads, by both the campaign itself and the RNC, and the content will be incorporated in a McCain speech. It will very likely be part of next Wednesday’s debate.

You would hope all of this is true, but if this ad is going to be useful, it’s going to be boiled down for TV use now, not 5-6 days from now when 3-4 other things may have usurped the ACORN vote fraud scandal at the front of the political news cycle (i.e. if CNN’s doing reports on it on yesterday, McCain better have an ad on TV by Friday, because massive ACORN voter fraud across a dozen states is not something like Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter that the media is going to hammer away at for 6-7 days — they’re only covering it right now because the outrageousness of using famous peoples’ names on registration forms makes it too juicy a story to ignore … but only for about 24 hours). And we’re still waiting for the 100 second Bill Ayers YouTube ad from Wednesday to be boiled down to at least 60 seconds for network use (waiting…waiting…waiting…).

Also, saying ACORN’s fraud will be part of Wednesday’s debate is iffy at best, given McCain’s desire to still be seen as Bi-Partisan John following the election. He’d rather have Palin or some YouTube ad only Republicans will click on do the job of getting his hands dirty, while he plays noble statesman when face-to-face with Obama (even though no matter what he says, it will be spun as dirty politics).

My guess is when push comes to shove, Obama’s right in his criticism from yesterday — McCain won’t say anything about ACORN, or Ayers, or any other associates to Barack’s face next Wednesday night, which will probably assure his loss on Nov. 4, but will get him a long ovation as a “lovable loser” on all the talk shows in the week after that, the same way Bob Dole did his “Defeat Tour” to applause from Letterman and Leno’s audiences after losing to Clinton in 1996.

Grue in the Attic

You started to say it, but didn’t really finish. Thus, it does appear that McCain simply doesn’t have the fire in the belly to be President.

His approach of “Can’t we all just get along” doesn’t get it in today’s world when going against Move on and others of a similar vain.

If McCain can’t or won’t start, and start now today, to let the American people know the truth about Nobama, then who wants him as President anyway. He in my opinion is looking more and more like a worn out, tired old white haired politician. He might have had the fire once, but not now. He could do us all a favor by stepping aside and let Palin be the Presidential candidate. At least she has the moxey to be a real candidate versus some old guy who just wants to reach across the isle and get along. Hello, what are they doing? Dud McCain, wake up, or step aside and let someone who at least has the fortitude to campaign be the candidate.

As it is now, what choice do we have? A con artist with ties to all sorts of communist organization, or an over the hill, worn out, tired old man. What a mess!!!!!!!!!!

Well, guess the idiots who elected McCain will get what they deserve. Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Republican party had better get their head out of where the sun doesn’t shine and start lining up their ducks for four years from now. We as a people might survive 4 years of Obama. We survived four years of Carter. The positive is that the masses who don’t even read a newpaper will have the opportunity to find out what their stupidity has wrought.

America is dying for Obama to get it said to his face. Just be damn sure you DEFLECT the Keating criticism first, a good lawyer ALWAYS does it like this:

1. Attention getter
2. Explain away your weakness: to get it out of the way (ie, I threw Keating out of my office, Bennett said I should not have been included but they had to include me so there were not only democrats in front of the committee and the democrats are as corrupt today as they were back then)
3. Best Point: Wright, Ayers, ACORN, Rezko: did you really not know? If we believe you, you have no judgment to know who you are dealing with, judgment you yourself can’t trust.

Not that I like Hillary, but I have confidence that the Clinton motivation is personal. Obama looks hand picked to be the stooge to bring extreme leftist changes into Washington.

Speaking of Hillary, there are rumors afoot that Hillary supporters are cooperating with Republicans to investigate and expose strong-arm tactics used by the Obama campaign and ACORN. The Hillary supporters are p!ssed over the Obama campaign allegedly intimidating Hillary supporters during the Dem caucuses, sometimes locking them out of caucus locations or cheating with the vote counts, and want to take Obama down so that Hillary can run in 2012. The rumors have it that Patrick Fitzgerald of Plame Game fame is leading the charge, possibly with criminal RICO charges. I don’t know how credible these rumors are, but check them out at the Hillbuzz website:

http://hillbuzz.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/clinton-supporters-sharing-evidence-for-rico-case-against-obama-campaign/

They also claim to have “internal numbers” showing that the public polls have been deliberately skewed by oversampling Democrats, and that McCain is still leading in FL, OH, NC, VA, IN, and even PA.

If Hillary supporters are willing to help Republicans in keeping a lying, bullying fraud like Obama out of the White House, we should welcome them with open arms! They might want to settle some scores in 2012, but there’s plenty of time for that. I just hope that the fit hits the shan in time to bring down Obama!

This is a great ad. The Obama Warriors are out in force on YouTube, giving every non-substantive argument they can pull out of their craniums against it.

“TOO BAD, CONSERVATIVES, OBAMA’S GONNA WIN. LYING ABOUT OBAMA AIN’T GONNA HELP YOU.”

It definitely touches a nerve.

capitalist piglet on October 10, 2008 at 3:50 PM

They need this to be more than just a web ad, but on tv as well

ConservativePartyNow on October 10, 2008 at 3:51 PM

McCain needs money. We’ve got to help.

capitalist piglet on October 10, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Why aren’t we hearing anything about how the Dems wanted to include ACORN payouts in the bailout package?

HELLOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Wake up Republicans!!! There’s you :30 ad right there…voter fraud, country in financial crisis, Dems tried to pay them off with the bailout package.

What the hell are they waiting for?

bigred on October 10, 2008 at 3:55 PM

Oh please, they are just an organization that lives in his neighborhood…

rightallthetime on October 10, 2008 at 3:56 PM

At 90 seconds, it won’t get any TV air time,

They need this to be more than just a web ad, but on tv as well
ConservativePartyNow on October 10, 2008 at 3:51 PM

From yesterday:

McCain goes full frontal on Obama-Ayers connection

The length of the spot would normally indicate that this is intended for web viewing only. However, John McCain gives the standard broadcast endorsement at the end, which strongly suggests that they will do ad buys in 90-second chunks in some battleground states for this.

wise_man on October 10, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Crumbs tossed to the conservative base . . . that’s what I’m thinking.

They’ll never show this on network TV.

/wish differently

Marybeth on October 10, 2008 at 3:57 PM

That’s some good stuff right there.

I love the PUMAs. Obama made a huge and completely avoidable mistake by snubbing them at the convention.

I usually love Charles Krauthammer, but he is really wrong-headed about Obama’s intellectual prowess. O! is truly an intellectual light weight and an empty suit.

Y-not on October 10, 2008 at 3:58 PM

JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING. RNC has tons of money left. They can HAMMER Wright, and McCain could stay above the frey.

marklmail on October 10, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Obama trained ACORN,

then,

ACORN is Obama!!

canopfor on October 10, 2008 at 4:01 PM

What about our 527’s? They could send out a slamming ad and McCain’s hands are clean.

HornetSting on October 10, 2008 at 4:02 PM

Barack H. Obama is able to purchase THIRTY MINUTES of INFORMERCIAL in the amount of $Price Here $970,000. Barack says that he is for the middle class, that he understands our struggles. And he shows this by paying $Price Here $970,000 to tell you so.”

Filled in the blanks for you, Hornet.

ManlyRash on October 10, 2008 at 4:04 PM

If the ACORN criminal fraud is as bad as it appears, has there been any consideration of postponing the date of the election? How can we have ANY confidence in this election?

Once the Messiah is in power, the issue is as dead as the future of our country.

And the equally intellectual light weight masses are falling for the intellectual light Messiah. Charles K. has disappointed me lately too. I always thought he and Brit Hume were the cream of Brit’s braintrust.

I don’t see the “ambitious” line of attack working too well. You have to be pretty ambitious to run for president. Especially if you do it twice.

crr6 on October 10, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Once again I think crr6 misses the point. Most people are ambitious, and yes anyone that runs for president (once or twice) are ambitious, but the real question here is what the driving force behind the ambition is?

The driving force for McCain’s ambition to be president is to do what is right for the country and its people. To place COUNTRY FIRST which is something McCain has a proven track record of doing.

As for Obama’s driving force behind his ambition to be president it isn’t as clear as McCain’s, however based upon what little experience Obama has in government the record he does have proves he’s an ultra-liberal with an ultra-liberal agenda, despite his trying to move to the center after winning his party’s nomination.

When you couple that with his obvious radical ties to people like Ayers, Rev Wright, ACORN, and the greedy financial advisors he has working his campaign that helped to fleece FM then the forces behind Obama’s ambition become quite clear and only a mental midget and/or brainwashed Obamanite would be unable to see the truth of the matter.

This is where the “ambition” part of this ad comes in crr6, McCain’s ambition is very clear, a sense of duty to lead and govern the country for the people, what is best for the people and placing COUNTRY FIRST, and just as clear (for those with one viable synapse) is Obama’s disdain for America and all that it stands for as is obvious by his radical ties, his ultra-liberal voting record (when he wasn’t voting “present”) and his socialist/Marxist views/agenda!

Anyone that can’t see through this is not ambitious and they are BLIND as well!

Thank you kindly, Manly.
I think that would be a good commercial, placed directly in the hours before his little Messiah convention.
