CNN: ACORN fraud and ties to Obama

posted at 11:15 am on October 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Drew Griffin had better watch out.  If he continues reporting on Barack Obama like this, pretty soon the Obama campaign will target him as an extremist and a hate-monger.  Griffin tells Campbell Brown on CNN how ACORN commits voter fraud, and then explains how Obama is closely tied to the group:

CAMPBELL BROWN: Now, it is officially nonpartisan. But this group works hard to register low-income voters who tend to vote for Democrats. ACORN’s under fire over allegedly phony voter registration in several states, and Drew Griffin of CNN’s Special Investigations Unit is digging into this for us. You’ll be pretty surprised by what he found.

DREW GRIFFIN: There are 5,000 of them.

RUTH ANN HOAGLAND: These?

GRIFFIN: These.

HOAGLAND: These.

GRIFFIN: Those?

HOAGLAND: And these.

GRIFFIN: They are new voter registration applications turned into by the community organizing group, ACORN, which has launched a massive voter registration drive, and with 5,000 applications in this one county dumped on just before the October 6 deadline; it looked like to Elections Board Administrator Ruth Ann Hoagland like ACORN was extremely successful, until her workers began finding problems.

GRIFFIN: A lot of them?

HOAGLAND: 50 percent. We had close to 5,000 total from ACORN, and so far we have identified about 2,100.

GRIFFIN: So roughly half of them are bad.

HOAGLAND: Correct.

GRIFFIN: Registered to a dead person, registered as a person who lives at a fast food shop.

HOAGLAND: Yes.

GRIFFIN: Or just all of them amazingly in the same hand.

HOAGLAND: Yes. Yes. All the signatures look exactly the same. Everything on the card filled out looks just the same.

GRIFFIN: Ruth Ann. Fraud?

HOAGLAND: We have no idea what the motive behind it is. It’s just overwhelming to us.

GRIFFIN: It’s not that some are bad. Once they started going through them, every one they looked at was bad.

HOAGLAND: Right. We’ve run into a lot of the same – we’ll go through ten cards, and the exact — in the exact same hand, the card is filled out the same, the signature is the same. We’ll make telephone calls, and every phone has been disconnected.

GRIFFIN: Hoagland decided to stop the review all together, work on other apparently legitimate registrations and get back to the other half of what she now calls “the fake pile,” later.

HOAGLAND: It’s frustrating. It’s very frustrating.

GRIFFIN: Here is another ACORN filled out registration form. It’s for Jimmy Johns, 10839 Broadway in Crown Pointe. Jimmy Johns. We decided to track him down. Here he is. Is there anybody here that’s actually named Jimmy Johns? Nobody registered to vote here named Jimmy Johns? This could really — I mean, there has been no fraud yet because people haven’t voted yet, right?

HOAGLAND: Correct. We’ll find out on Election Day.

GRIFFIN: But it certainly sets up a potential.

HOAGLAND: The potential, I suppose, is always there. It’s just that the volume — the volume is just incredible.

GRIFFIN: The elections board is run by both Republicans and Democrats. Regardless of whose party, we’ve got a problem with these ballots. These registrations.

SALLY LASOTA: Both sides, Democrats and Republicans. For us, it’s unfortunate. ACORN, with its intent, perhaps, was good to begin with, but unfortunately went awry somewhere.

GRIFFIN: It is fraud, says the Democrat Director, Sally LaSota.

LASOTA: Well, if you look, it’s the same signature for all three voters. It’s as though the one individual tried — did three separate applications but you can tell the signature—we’re not handwriting experts, but what’s obvious is obvious.

GRIFFIN: ACORN’s voter registration drives are under investigation or suspicion in several states. Just yesterday, local authorities raided this ACORN office in Las Vegas where ACORN workers allegedly registered members of the Dallas Cowboys football team. Over the last four years, a dozen states investigated complaints of fraudulent registrations filed by ACORN, and complaints of fraud by ACORN have exploded nationwide in just the last few weeks. We tried to contact the ACORN director in Gary, Indiana. But when the phone messages went unanswered, we went to the office. It’s abandoned. ACORN told us that the state director for Indiana ACORN is actually based in this office in Milwaukee. But today, we found it empty, too. ACORN’s attorney in Boston told us allegations his organization has committed fraud is a government attempt to keep the disenfranchised from voting.

ACORN LAWYER BRIAN MOLLER: We believe their purpose is to attack ACORN and suppress votes. We think that by attacking ACORN that they are going to discourage people who have may have registered with ACORN from voting.

GRIFFIN: Brian Moller says ACORN has its own quality control, has fired workers in the past, including workers in Gary. Despite its past, the Obama campaign gave $800,000 to ACORN to help fund its primary registration drive, and ACORN has endorsed Barack Obama for president. The Obama campaign reacted this afternoon, saying, it is “committed to protecting the integrity of the voting process and said it has not worked with ACORN during the general election”.

BROWN: Drew Griffin. Drew, though the campaign, or Obama, rather, has worked with ACORN, though, in the past. Is that accurate?

GRIFFIN: That’s accurate. As an attorney, he represented ACORN in a motor voter court case, which, by the way, Barack Obama won for ACORN. But all afternoon long, the campaign has been calling us, trying to distance themselves from ACORN.

BROWN: All right. Drew Griffin for us, tonight. Drew, as always, thanks.

I’m less surprised to see this on Campbell Brown’s show than on Anderson Cooper’s. I’ve appeared a couple of times with Brown, and she seems interested in hearing both sides of a story. When Cooper heard Griffin’s report on Obama and Ayers, Cooper looked like he’d eaten a bug and attempted to water it down somewhat. Brown not only let Griffin’s reporting stand, she gave him the opening to talk about Obama’s ties to ACORN.

How long before Team Obama sends an e-mail asking followers to start flooding CNN with outrage and demands that Griffin be taken off the air?

If CNN get’s such a letter, I hope they blast it to everyone’s email.

FROM HUGH HEWITT

America, you need not feel guilty for being afraid of Barack Obama. It’s not racist to doubt his character and experience and judgment. It’s not racist to conclude that they’re lacking. He has already proved that a black man can run an entirely viable campaign for the presidency of the United States. Every one of us who looks forward to a post-racist, post-racial society — one in which we’ve ended racial discrimination because we’ve stopped discriminating on the basis of race — can be proud. But we can also refuse to vote for Barack Obama for reasons unrelated to race, and we can do so without feeling any guilt whatsoever.

“Obama took the case, known as ACORN vs. Edgar (the name of the Republican governor at the time) and we won. Obama then went on to run a voter registration project with Project VOTE in 1992 that made it possible for Carol Moseley Braun to win the Senate that year. Project VOTE delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (ACORN delivered about 5,000 of them).

Since then, we have invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office. Thus it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for STate Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress in 1996. By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends.”

Come January 23 2009 we will be welcoming Drew Griffin to our new home at the naval base in Gitmo, Cuba. He’ll be able to join us as we are given the opportunity by Dear Leader Obamassiah to reflect upon the errors of our ways by being divisive and racist. And who knows, maybe someday one of us will be granted the great privilege of returning to society.

Someone needs to convince Hillary that ACORN was behind the scenes manipulating the primaries. They stole the nomination from her I would be willing to bet.
Barack is willing to steal the presidency from anyone, including the democrat party.

redshirt on October 10, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I would not be surprised that if ACORN switches up their tactics and start up another organization backed by ACORN that does the same thing.

Why? All of the ACORN labeled registrations are now under suspicion.

They’ll change it up to try to slip under the radar.

Unfortunately, this one’s going to play out in the streets, first. BHO and his scumbag cronies run with a scorched earth strategy. They would rather see the US burn than lose an election, as BHO has enjoyed hinting about over and over, along with his overtly dangerous and threatening use of the race card at every turn.

DaveC on October 10, 2008 at 11:27 AM

We had a primary election here in my Arizona county on Sept. 2nd. Heard on the radio this morning that over 300 people were caught trying to vote more than once. (They had voted once by mail, then showed up at the polls on election day and voted again). That’s just one county — over 300 people casting multiple votes (and those are just the ones they managed to catch.).

It’s not just voter registration fraud, and it’s not just happening in a few places. It’s massive voting fraud, and it’s happening all over the country.

No one in the office, they are paying for office space, misuse of public funds.

Whether you like her or not (or Bill), anyone with a brain knows Hillary had her nomination stolen by the caucus process (where Barack X’s activists browbeat voters in voting for Hussein-Obama), playing the race card in SC and other southern states, not to mention the voter registration issues.

Obama likes to pretend that being picked by ACORN to represent them in the Illinois Motor Voter case was just the luck of the draw, but as Stanley Kurtz found out, ACORN specifically sought out Obama, because they knew him as a community organizer that supported and advised ACORN in the past. It’s not just that Obama used ACORN to sign up voters (legal or otherwise), it’s that Obama represented ACORN as a lawyer and helped them train workers. ACORN’s involvement in extensive voting fraud is bad enough, but this is also the same group that was shaking down banks for not making enough CRA-mandated sub-prime loans. These race-hustling pimps are a big part of the reason we’re in the financial mess we’re in today — and Obama is in it up to his neck.

Farrakhan on Obama: ‘The Messiah is absolutely speaking’

If Obama “wins,” the USA will be officially downgraded to an Acorn Republic.

yeah, they showed that in the video.

It’s like registering Mr. Hut, first name Pizza. Or Mr Bell, first name Taco. Or Mr. Famous, first name Dave.

Farrakhan on Obama: ‘The Messiah is absolutely speaking’

“Brothers and sisters,” Farrakhan said, “Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way.”

Farrakhan points out that the man Nation of Islam followers refer to as “the Savior,” Fard Muhammad, had a black father and a white mother, just as Obama did.

“A black man with a white mother became a savior to us,” he said. “A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall.

“Would God allow Barack to be president of a country that has been so racist, so evil in its treatment of Hispanics, native Americans, blacks?” he asked. “Would God do something like that? Yeah. Of course he would. That’s to show you that the stone that the builders rejected has become the headstone of the corner. This is a sign to you. It’s the time of our rise. It’s the time that we should take our place. The future is all about you.”

CAMPBELL BROWN: Now, it is officially nonpartisan in the tank for Obama. But this group works hard to register low no-income voters who tend to always vote for Democrats. ACORN’s under fire over allegedly phony voter registration in several states, and soon-to-be fired Drew Griffin of CNN’s soon-to-be-disbanded Special Investigations Unit is digging into this for us. You’ll be pretty You won’t be surprised by what he found, but you will be thunderstruck that we actually broadcast his report.

What Campbell really meant to say.

Did they actually vote, or did they get stopped from voting because the controls in place caught them?

The argument from the left is that our controls catch all these people before they can vote twice.

Flooding the system with fraudulent registrations could press the verifiers for time, though. And absentee ballots can’t be voter ID’ed. And not many states require photo ID.

justincase on October 10, 2008 at 11:56 AM

One problem that no one seems to think important is the effect that this over representation has on polling. If I understand it the ratios of Dems to everyone else is how the poll is weighted. If one guy is registering 72 times–that Dem number in the polls is inflated. It then creates false momentum for the Democrat in the race. And that increases the confidence of undecideds that Obama is real if so many others think that he is…

False momentum is what is dangerous and fraudulent. There is fraud before the vote. The race is being stolen.

———-
ACORN Falls Close To Tree— Eyebrows were raised last week by a fundraising invitation sent by the Friends Of Bill de Blasio. de Blasio, who managed Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaign, held the December 7 event to fund his run for the 39th Councilmanic District seat.

The invitation listed the committee’s address as 88 Third Avenue, which may be familiar to some as the address for the community group ACORN. The contact on the invitation was Kara Hood, an ACORN political organizer. One insider thought that the connection between the candidate and the community group was too tight, and could imply that ACORN’s stance on community issues was politicized. “That’s a little too close for comfort for me,” he said.

But ACORN’s political director, Peter Colavito, said that there was nothing new about the group supporting candidates through its political action committee. Colavito also said that ACORN has a satellite group called ACORN Associates that does political consulting work. He said that de Blasio has a small contract with ACORN Associates, and that Hood does part-time consulting work under that contract.

“When we feel like there’s somebody who’s going to fight for issues that are important, like education or housing or jobs, our political action committee is going to interview that person and if they deem it fit, they’re going to get some work done to that put person in office,” said Colavito, who added that de Blasio has been endorsed by the political action committee. de Blasio and ACORN’s political arm have had a relationship since de Blasio’s early days in the Dinkins administration. The fundraiser was also held at the home of another former Dinkins official, Ken Sunshine.

The Obama campaign reacted this afternoon, saying, it is “committed to protecting the integrity of the voting process and said it has not worked with ACORN during the general election”.

I wonder if phone records from Obama campaign offices and ACORN offices would yield anything interesting…? Also, is the attorney playing semantics here? They could still have registered fraudulent ballots during the primary election. Is that when they paid them $800 grand?

Spooky stuff.

cntrlfrk on October 10, 2008 at 12:04 PM

It will be interesting to see how many hours will be spent just trying to weed out fraudulent registrations, get a total of those found and finally a dollar amount for each employee paid who was charged with the responsibility of finding those registrations. Perhaps ACORN should be billed by the agencies required to perform this task.

mindhacker on October 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM

So are these fraud endeavors by ACORN the reason Obama is so ahead in many polls or are people serious buying his BS and are willing to vote that walking, talking disaster into the White House?

Yakko77 on October 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM

The government money that was promised them needs to be now used to find the scope and size of the situation quickly.

lwssdd on October 10, 2008 at 12:07 PM

I am very surprised this penetrated the main stream press. But lets be honest it’s not going to be a prime time special any time soon. Average Joe will have no idea that the Democrats are committing massive voter fraud to get Barry elected.

What the GOP needs to do, is get creative with this. I think this whole thing just begs for a satire. They should run some movie spoof ads. Heres my ideas:

1. Dawn of the Democrats – just in time for halloween. This could be a zombie movie spoof of zombies invading a voter station carrying Obama signs.

2. Election 2008 – Attack of the clones – same idea as above, except with clones or even star wars clonetrooper look-alikes as the antagonists.

Funny and informative. The democrats need to be on the receiving end of some mockery for once.

tflst5 on October 10, 2008 at 12:09 PM

Solution : Federal law stating that voters may only register to vote at a state license bureau (i.e. DMV etc.), but appear in person. That prospective voters must provide certified copy of birth certificate or passport, must provide official photo ID, must provide proof of current residence. Done.

Dasher on October 10, 2008 at 12:10 PM

The USA is a Banana Republic.
How can we complain about voter fraud in Zimbabwe, Russia, Venezuela, Iran and other similar countries when we allow it to run rampant in the United States?

albill on October 10, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Yeah, there were good reasons for having standardized rules, deadlines, and registration at the County Clerk’s Office and requiring a birth certificate for ID.

Anything less was just an opening for fraud. And now we have it by the boxfull.

Fraudsters and criminals selling their wares in the Temple of Democracy. What would Jesus do?
