Boehner declares war on ACORN

posted at 5:05 pm on October 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Congressional Republicans have finally demanded an end to federal funding for ACORN after more than a dozen states have opened investigations into fraud in their voter-registration efforts.  House Minority Leader John Boehner has not only called to end that funding for ACORN but also for all federal candidates to stop contracting with ACORN while investigations continue into their business practices:

House Republican leader John A. Boehner of Ohio escalated the war on ACORN today, calling for it to be cut off from all federal money and going so far as to call for a ban on ACORN contracting with candidates for federal office.

ACORN, a community organizing group allied with Democrats, has been blamed by the GOP for pushing housing policies that Republicans say contributed to the housing crisis. It has been the subject of investigations for voter registration fraud and its Nevada offices were recently raided. …

ACORN receives federal money through the affordable housing trust fund after that money has been sent to states and local governments. So Congress, to keep the group from getting money, would need to specifically forbid ACORN from being eligible to get federal funds.

“Contracting for services between candidates for federal office and ACORN, as Sen. Obama has done, must end,” says Boehner. “Now that the taxpayers own Fannie Mae, any funding from Fannie Mae’s nonprofit foundation to ACORN must stop.”

The federal government should never have funded ACORN in the first place, especially when it and other organizations like it take partisan positions in elections.  The very fact that Senator Barack Obama hires ACORN and spends $800,000 on them in a month represents a conflict of interest in providing federal funds.  Essentially, those who earmark funds to ACORN have done nothing different from those who have their legislative aides do campaign work out of their offices — and everyone knows it.

Politico takes a strange position today on the supposed difference between voter fraud and voter registration fraud as some sort of mitigation on ACORN.  Supposedly, only the former is an “insult to the democratic process”, but voter registration fraud intends to set the conditions necessary for voter fraud and cannot be distinguished from it.  Registration on this massive scale intends to create placeholder registrations that allow people to cast multiple votes and pervert elections.

The pattern seems very clear.  Wherever ACORN works, they file hundreds and thousands of bogus registrations.  These aren’t isolated incidents, but strongly suggest a systemic effort to undermine democracy.  Not only should taxpayers not fund such an organization, but the Department of Justice should treat it the same way they treat organized-crime syndicates.

Not necessarily. If ACORN becomes the news story it SHOULD be, then we tell the American public about Obama’s history with the organization…and we tell them about his CURRENT buying of their services.

I remember going to a rally for GWB in a wealthy suburb of Seattle (Medina, near where Bill Gates lives). I was with a conservative friend, who pointed out a mass of people marching together, wearing red, carrying a big banner…he said to me, “Wow. That’s ACORN. They’re communists.” It was the first I’d ever heard of them. This was probably four or five years ago…and I’d been active in political circles, but didn’t know anything about ACORN.

The American people have to learn about them, and before they manage to get the result they’re looking for by tainting this election. The tainting is underway, but some minds can still be changed if we can demonstrate Obama’s long-time bedfellows here.

Beyond the obvious RICO case that should have been brought against ACORN years ago, I’m wondering why these intentional abuses against our very electoral system are not among the crimes receiving the harshest punishments that our system can offer. Everything in the US is based on “The Full Faith And Credit” of our institutions and attacking the electoral system goes right to the heart of our nation. I never understood why Dan Rather was allowed to blatantly try to skew the election with clear fraud and nothing was ever done to him, criminally.

For all those who claim they love “democracy”, the punishments we dole out for those who attack the credibility of our election process are as weak as they come – not to mention the fact that we never even try to hold people responsible.

gstrickler on October 9, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Even if they don’t get a conviction by Election Day, an indictment might be enough, especially if it mentions that Obama (1) trained ACORN’s leaders during the 1990’s (2) was their lawyer, and (3) gave them $800K this year, along with ACORN’s penchant for voter fraud.

An indictment would force the MSM to look at this, and be a huge stink-bomb in Obama’s “clean” campaign, and might frighten enough centrist voters to cost him the election.

Steve Z on October 9, 2008 at 5:33 PM

“ENSIGN URGES FEDS TO STOP PAYMENTS TO ACORN” [Rich Lowry]

Washington, D.C. – In a letter to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Senator John Ensign today called for the suspension of taxpayer dollars that ultimately end up in the hands of such controversial groups as ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. ACORN, which is under investigation, is eligible for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac affordable housing funds, which add up to hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

“With the government takeover of Fannie and Freddie, the government will be taxing itself to create a backdoor slush fund, and we must prevent these taxpayer dollars from going toward ACORN,” said Ensign. “With the recent news tying ACORN with voter fraud, suspending these funds is even more urgent.”

As part of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, Fannie and Freddie are required to provide funding for newly created affordable housing funds. This was signed into law prior to the government takeover of the two agencies. Now that the government owns Fannie and Freddie and may provide them with up to $200 billion, taxing these companies does not help create stability, which is the goal of FHFA.

A search warrant was served today on the ACORN Headquarters in Nevada as part of an ongoing investigation into whether employees used false addresses or false names as part of their voter registration operation.

The letter was sent to James Lockhart, the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency today. As the regulatory agency overseeing Fannie and Freddie, FHFA has the authority to stop these contributions to the affordable housing funds. Senators Michael Enzi, Jon Kyl, David Vitter, Pat Roberts, Tom Coburn, John Thune and Jim DeMint signed the letter with Ensign.

Continue reading this post for the text of the letter.

October 7, 2008

The Honorable James B. Lockhart III

Director

Federal Housing Finance Agency

1700 G Street, NW

Fourth Floor

Washington, D.C. 20552

Dear Director Lockhart:

We write today to urge you to exercise your statutory authority to suspend any contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the newly created affordable housing funds, which could direct federal dollars to controversial groups like ACORN.

The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 requires that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac set aside an amount equal to 4.2 basis points for each dollar of new business activity and transfer those funds to two newly created affordable housing funds. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that such assessments may equal hundreds of millions of dollars a year for each company. Sec. 1337(b) of 12 U.S.C. 1301, however, gives you the authority to suspend those contributions if the assessments would contribute to the financial instability or the undercapitalization of the enterprises.

Less than one month ago, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) placed the enterprises into conservatorship due to concerns over the soundness of the firms and their difficulty in raising sufficient capital to carry out their missions. You said in a Sept. 7, 2008, statement that the companies could not “continue to operate safely and soundly and fulfill their critical public mission” and that “FHFA will act as the conservator to operate the Enterprises until they are stabilized.”

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are clearly financially unstable and face significant capitalization problems. One does not need to wait for financial reports to understand that. We strongly believe that taxing the companies hundreds of millions of dollars a year weakens their financial health and is completely at odds with FHFA’s goal of stabilizing the companies and returning them to normal business operations. We urge you to suspend any contributions to the affordable housing funds until at a minimum the enterprises are no longer in conservatorship and to make such a decision without further delay. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

I get the feeling that “sticks and stones my break my bones but words can never hurt me” could be making a come back.

Political correctness is literally killing our economy and us and we’re worried about whether someone is offended?

Absolutely. But as our SCOTUS, and some of the population, have decided that things like putting diapers on someone’s head constitutes “torture”, or that humiliation is a “crime against humanity”, the outlook is a bit bleak.

This is not new. I read the biography of Truman by David McCullough and there was an extensive amount of time given to the Kansas City machine and their blatant efforts to steal elections. I was talking to an old guy the other day who said his dad was precinct committeeman and he used to brag about how there were no Republicans elected in his district. He ran a bar and would give out booze for votes.

No, this kind of thing has been around in form or another for a long time. I do think that ACORN is without a doubt the most ambitious vote fraud scheme of all time however.

HornetSting, poor ole you, do you now live in the Land of Entrapment Enchantment?

Pelayo on October 9, 2008 at 5:44 PM

Yeah.
Unfortunately.

Where were you from 1994 – 2006 when Republicans had majorities in Congress. At this point, you’re pissing in the wind.
