Was Obama a member of the “New Party”?

posted at 4:48 pm on October 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

When I saw this at Ace’s, it sounded so familiar that I spent 20 minutes checking our archives for the post I was sure Ed or Bryan had written about it. I was wrong; it wasn’t HA that blogged it, it was Erick Erickson at Red State in early June. Read his background, then see this post at Politically Drunk for evidence that The One was a member. I can’t tell definitively from either just how far left the NP was at the time; it may be that, like a lot of new third parties, they hadn’t quite hammered out a fixed identity yet. Erickson writes that “The New Party was designed as a loose confederation of unions, socialists, communists, and black activists who shared common values, but often had different goals,” although the party’s Wikipedia page suggests that they weren’t as far left as the Greens, which criticized them for being Democratic Party hangers-on. Doubtless Obama will claim that it was the union aspect that drew him to it or, failing that, that it was a brief youthful flirtation (he was, er, 35 at the time) with a fringier party than he ultimately felt comfortable with. Needless to say, I know I speak for all of us in denouncing this very racist attempt to question him on his party affiliations the way Sarah Palin was questioned on hers. After all, it’s not like any of The One’s other political associations have been worrisomely fringe.

The best part of this, assuming that it trickles up the media food chain and gets put to one of Obama’s spokesmen, will be trying to reconcile the inevitable profession of ignorance about the New Party’s agenda with David Brooks’s assertions about how “socially perceptive” Obama is. Truly, except for Ayers’s terrorist background, Wright’s sermons, Pfleger’s race-baiting, and the NP, his awareness of what’s going on around him is laser sharp.

Former CIA analyst and Hillary supporter Larry Johnson has a blog called “No Quarter”.
Fascinating stuff – they have absolutely placed Obama in membership meetings of The New Party
(effectively disbanded in 1998 by a Supreme Court ruling) and the Chicago branch of the DSA.

What’s the DSA you ask? Try Democratic Socialists of America. It’s not the 1960’s all over again…
it’s the 1930’s. They just got them some “stealth” religion, and just in time for the Fannie/Freddie
“home ownership for all” meltdown and slimy Wall St CEOs getting exposed. Wonderful!

Yep. Time to join McCain and Palin and fight for our country. Do you think McCain knew all this stuff about Obama when he and his staff wrote his convention speech?

Imagine how weird it is for him to find out that he’s running against an old school communist who is backed by all the filth of the 1960s.

This election really is the final battle between the members of the Vietnam generation. We simply cannot let the crazy commies win.

Whoever posted that Wiki link, thanks – it names Obama, and lists his election in ’96:

The party’s chapters elected or helped to elect dozens of candidates, including Barack Obama’s 1996 run for the Illinois State Senate. [1] Party chapters were also active between elections, pressuring elected officials to pass legislation on issues such as living wages and affordable housing.

In fact, here in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts just this very day I conversed with three different customers on the subject of Comrade Obama and we were in complete agreement – not since the overthrow of the Czar and the accent of Lenin has there been such a threat posed by budding Communists upon a state.

Other than that, I have no strong feelings on the subject. I’d like to have a beer with him.

lansing quaker on October 8, 2008 at 6:49 PM

From the Newsbusters link:

After allegations surfaced in early summer over the ‘New Party’s’ endorsement of Obama, the Obama campaign along with the remnants of the New Party and Democratic Socialists of America claimed that Obama was never a member of either organization. The DSA and ‘New Party’ then systematically attempted to cover up any ties between Obama and the Socialist Organizations. However, it now appears that Barack Obama was indeed a certified and acknowledged member of the DSA’s New Party.

So Obama has already been confronted about this, and he LIED. Am I reading that right?

They will deny lying but may admit to prevaricating, secure in the belief that we unsophisticated Palinites won’t know what the word means.

Carl Davidson and Bill Ayers are indeed old friends. Carl told Trevor Loudon as much in a comment he posted to Loudon’s blog:

Bill and Mike and I have been friends since the SDS days of the 1960s–although Mike and I bitterly opposed the Weatherunderground nonsense back then when it counted… What’s silly is the notion that any of us shape the politics of Barack Obama…

“Mike” is Mike Klonsky. Nothing to see here, Trevor, move along…

Yes, imagine that. A country that actually expects its immigrants to bring something to the table, instead of just coming to take all the country’s goodies they can get.

A government that puts its own citizens’ interests first when it forms its immigration policies. What a concept. Too bad that idea never caught on here.

If it eases your mind at all, you’ll find, looking at the links, that this party he belonged to worked in concert with ACORN.

I heard Mark Levin talking about it tonight, and David Boze, a local Seattle host picked it up too.

This could be the thing that sinks him. I don’t know why he thought he could hide it, but I guess he almost got away with it. He might yet, if we’re intimidated into not talking about it.

The mass media, and thereby the American public, are not going to pay attention to Obambi’s Marxist friends, associates, memberships, and anything else unless—

Unless it is brought to their attention with fireworks and fanfare, the way the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth did against Kerry.

John McCain is not going to do it. It will take a 527 organization, with some serious bucks behind it, to make a dent in the public stupor.

There are a lot of people who are not going to decide how to vote until the last week of October. My son says he will do a ‘crash course’ in the election then; he’s not paying attention now. He’s not alone.

So there’s time, but someone with money has to get off the pot and get an organization together, some ads, people who can testify to Obambi’s radical past, etc. out right away.

They were a big thing in the mid-1990s, mostly in the Chicago area. They even linked up with Lenora Fulani’s crackpot cultist group at one point. Fulani was also affiliated with Lyndon Larouche.

Not surprising that Obama was a member. What would be even more shocking is evidence that Obama was a Fulani for President supporter in 1996?

I doubt McCain will run with it until the MSM has reported on it themselves. McCain need the cover of something like the NY Times reporting on it, or it will be dismissed as coming from eeevil Rovian neo-cons. The logical place for this to begin to hit critical mass is in Chicago, say, through the Sun Times…

In our poorly educated society many people will not care about BO’s membership in a Socialist party. You’ll need to explain what this means to them and then make it personal. You also need to say “If this is ok, then why would BO hide it? Why was it scrubbed from the Web? Why is it not in his two autobiographies?”

Here is a starting point:

Definitions of socialism on the Web:

An economic system in which the basic means of production are primarily owned and controlled collectively, usually by government under some system …
countrystudies.us/united-states/economy-12.htm

An “economic, social and political doctrine which expresses the struggle for the equal distribution of wealth by eliminating private property and the exploitative ruling class. …
www2.truman.edu/~marc/resources/terms.html

Click here to see it on Google

Then say “anyone who owns a business, dreams of owning a business or someday being successful needs to be concerned about this.

Here’s a quote from Winston Churchill:

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of misery.

First, it specifically says that Obama is in the “multi-racial coalition” category, not the “Black Nationalist” category.

Second, I don’t think this in any way connects him to Islam. I think it’s just meant to be a Who’s Who guide for black muslims of black activists and politicians, and in Obama’s case he was running for the State Senate. He’s not responsible for this newsletter. There’s plenty of legit stuff to go after him on, we shouldn’t be side-tracked by this sort of thing. This New Party affiliation is verifiable. The New Party’s parent was The Democratic Socialists of America… a pure socialist organization.

This needs to grow some long and strong legs. If Senator McCain confronts Senator Obama face to face in the next debate, it needs to be a direct attack on this. He was a verifiable member of a socialist party when running for the state senate in Illinois. Game. Set. Match.

New details on Ayers & Dorhn and their wide circle of Barry supporting friends:

Founded in August 2006, MDS seems to be just the type of revolutionary unity the WUO was striving for way back then…

From Weather Underground to Movement for a Democratic Society, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn

I have revealed that three former WUO members, Bernardine Dohrn, Mark Rudd and Jeff Jones have served on the MDS board, as have two close friends of Dohrn’s husband Bill Ayers, former SDS Maoists Carl Davidson and Mike Klonsky-both very familiar names to Obama watchers.

Bill Ayers himself is a prominent MDS activist, while another board member Thomas Good describes himself as an “unrepentant Weather supporter.

Progressives for Obama is intimately tied to MDS. Four of the six original PFO founders are MDS board members-Carl Davidson (CCDS member), Tom Hayden (former SDS leader) and Bill Fletcher and Barbara Ehrenreich (both DSA leaders)…

Politics is the art of persuasion. A politician supported by the media has free reign to say what people want to hear and Obama is very good at saying what people want to hear.

The best predictor of what Obama will do however is what he has done in the past. If enough people look at his conduct, he won’t be the next POTUS

Gosh, I can’t imagine. This is from the MDS website:

Formed in Chicago in August 2006, MDS affirms the Founding Principles:

-the expansion of egalitarian and participatory democracy in politics, economics, and culture.

-the restoration and preservation of the earth’s robust ecological health.

-the extension of human rights to include universal healthcare, decent housing, lifelong education, fortifying nutrition, reproductive freedom, and meaningful work.

-the eradication of systems of dominant power and privilege based on identity, including but not limited to race gender, nationality, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability or religion.

-the growth and development of the commons, the resources that belong to society as a whole.

-the public control of corporate power to meet human needs and the expansion of workers’ authority and rights, including the equitable distribution of wealth.

-the rejection of militarism and war and the enhancement of power and authority of international institutions capable of resolving conflict between nations.

-In working for the achievement of these special changes, MDS believes in working in coalition with like-minded others to create an interracial, interethnic, intergenerational and international mass movement.

There are a lot of photos to choose from on the MDS website, but my favorite is this darling photo of a child who has been successfully indoctrinated into a party which reveres Emma Goldman as a heroine.

Capitalism:

Goldman believed that the economic system of capitalism was inimical to human liberty. “The only demand that property recognizes,” she wrote in Anarchism and Other Essays, “is its own gluttonous appetite for greater wealth, because wealth means power; the power to subdue, to crush, to exploit, the power to enslave, to outrage, to degrade.”[

Tactics:

Among the tactics that Goldman endorsed was targeted violence. Early in her career Goldman believed that the use of violence, while distasteful, could be effective in achieving a greater good. She advocated propaganda of the deed – attentat, or violence carried out to encourage the masses to revolt. She supported her partner Alexander Berkman’s attempt to kill industrialist Henry Clay Frick, and even begged him to allow her to participate
