Prayers for Dean Barnett

So often in this business, we become friends with people whom we’ve never met face to face. That’s certainly true of Dean Barnett of the Weekly Standard. I’ve long admired his writing, and Dean has always been kind enough to request me as a guest whenever he guest hosts for Hugh Hewitt. He calls me his “crazy uncle”, a humorous reference to Jeremiah Wright.
My friend Duane “Generalissimo” Patterson tells me that Dean has had to be admitted to the hospital and is currently in the ICU with a terrible attack of his cystic fibrosis. I’d like to ask Hot Air readers for their prayers for my friend and his family. I know they will appreciate the support.
I’ll update you as I hear more.

I heard Hugh talking about Dean on his show today. Our family is certainly praying for Dean and his family during this very difficult time.

I had just noticed that he hadn’t weighed in on the debate at the Weekly Standard blog when I clicked over here and saw this post. Dean projects such energy in his online writing it’s easy to forget his struggle with CF. I’ll certainly be praying for him and his family. Thanks for letting us know.

Almighty God, in this hour of need for Dean and his family, I pray that your healing touch will bring Dean through this medical emergency. Direct the Doctors and staff through your presence. Help them assist Dean with their knowledge and skills and their care for those who need their help. God, I relinquish my prayers to Your will and pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Our prayers are with Dean. We hope he pulls through all right. Not having him fill in for Hugh when Hugh’s away would be sacrilege.
Despite the fact he’s not fond of our Yankees, despite the fact he drops his “R’s”, we can forgive that, so all our best goes to Dean.

Prayer works. As a two time cancer survivor, I know without doubt that prayer works. It doesn’t always change our earthly fate, but it changes our heart and our soul.
Dean has written that he is not religious, although he is certainly moral, but I pray that God uses this challenge to change Dean’s heart.
Terrie on October 8, 2008 at 9:22 PM

God bless the Catholics… as a new Catholic, I’m enjoying the fact that we have a patron saint for EVERYTHING. (the patron saint against hoarseness, anyone?) The patron saint for those of us with lung problems (mine is just mild asthma) is Bernadino of Siena. But my favorite prayer of healing, and one that has sustained me often, is for the intercession of St. Peregrine, who suffered from cancer:
Oh great Saint Peregrine, you who have been called “The Mighty” and “The Wonder-Worker” because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of these sick persons whom we entrust to you, especially Dean Barnett.
Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen.

I’ve corresponded with him a little since first encountering his work at Hugh Hewitt’s blog, and was overjoyed for him when he got the gig at THE WEEKLY STANDARD. He’s truly one of the good guys – very smart, very funny, totally unpretentious, devastating but never petty when he’s on the attack – his honesty and good will always showing through no matter how seriously engaged on an issue.
We need people like him more than can be expressed.

You know what the best thing is about Dean Barnett? There’s an irrepressible streak of cheer in everything he says. Talk Radio is a fountain of cheerfulness, and Dean Barnett is one of the tallest, broadest, most refreshing, and most energizing voices on the menu.
Dean. You stand out over the crowd with your authenticity, your unpussified maleness, and your unforced natural conservatism.
Dean. You look ridiculous in that backless hospital gown. I love you man but I don’t need to have nightmares about. So I am sending you a Dollar Store washcloth and a couple of safety pins so you can repair your dignity, OK Pal?
And here’s my calloused hand, brother, in friendship and respect.

Hey Ed you could organize a prayer and fasting for the HA (believer) types as the election gets close. God’s not political but He is pro-life.

Deano! Get bettah soon, ya wicked pissah.
I got a nice personal reply from Dean once years ago on something he wrote that Hugh Hewitt linked on his blog. Of all things, it was about baseball. Imagine.
Quick, cue up his DVD of “Fever Pitch!”

Prayers for Dean and his family. I first heard his voice when he substituted for Hugh and I had to look him up (and learned of his cystic fibrosis) because of his accent wondering where he was from.
