Open thread: McCain and Palin on “Hannity & Colmes”

posted at 8:35 pm on October 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

9 p.m. ET on FNC, as always. Maverick himself reportedly goes after Obama on Ayers “with gusto,” so look out for that, as well as for the obligatory Fannie/Freddie fingerpointing. Asked for his reaction to the Ayers stuff tonight on ABC, The One invited McCain to say it to his face at the next debate. If he doesn’t, will Obama raise the subject himself to affect a little fightin’-nutroots-brand faux indignation, or is it simply too toxic a topic for him to broach in whatever context? The answer, as always: Depends on how the polls look next week.

While we wait, a sneak preview from the show in which McCain follows Cindy’s right hook this afternoon with a couple of jabs.

LOL @ Hannity tweaking McCain for not bringing this up.

This is a friendly interview. If McCain won’t name Frank, Dodd, etal. (Name names!) He never will. And that’s sad.

lorien1973 on October 8, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Oh please. That’s what Attorney General Giuliani will do.

Unless you really are excited to see what pillar of American legal scholarship Obama would put in that position…

funky chicken on October 8, 2008 at 9:24 PM

Would somebody please take that orange tie away from McCain and burn it.

So THAT’s what happened to Hillary’s DNC pantsuit.

Sarah didn’t seem that comfortable on Ayers. It’s good that McCain picked it up. I’m not a huge fan of the “honesty” argument, but I guess we can let others beat on the Ayers drum. ‘Seems like McCain thinks it’s unseemly for him to get riled up about it personally.

ACORN! Yippee

surrounded on October 8, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Sure, I prefer how both John McCain and Sarah Palin are talking tonight with Sean Hannity as opposed to their debate performances. But the important thing is that John McCain and Sarah Palin are clear headed and articulate about what is wrong about Obama and where they will take the country. The McCain-Palin campaign made a judgment about how to handle the debates that is not what I would have made and not what a lot of conservatives would have made, but seems to have been effective with independents and moderate Democrats. So focus on what you can do to help McCain-Palin win. You want McCain as Commander-in-Chief. McCain-Palin do stand for country first. You don’t want Obama as President. You really don’t. He is a socialist. He has questionable loyalties to the country.

I prefer the “judgment” argument Sarah articulated over the “honesty” one Mac is using, but over all I’d say the Ayers section was weak… Sean wanted to talk about it much more than they did.

I have to admit, I’m not as much of a fan of her as I was previously, but I sincerely doubt Jindal is kicking himself. She’s come leaps and bounds since her nomination but she’s far from where she could be. I think Jindal having some solid executive and emergency experience will make him real strong. Frank. Dodd. Etal who were taking money from FMFM all the while saying positive things to prop up the company. And then letting it finally collapse.

Pelosi promised “no witch hunts” – as a guy running on reform, McCain should have taken that quote and shook it violently.

lorien1973 on October 8, 2008 at 9:37 PM

Maybe I am out of touch, but I haven’t seen any buzz about this interview…is it something they patched in over night to try and undo some of the damage done to the ticket last night?

surrounded on October 8, 2008 at 9:30 PM

The lack of buzz is probably due in part to the normal media bias, but also to the fact that McCain did Hannity just over a week ago, and a Republican going on Fox (other than when it’s that time of the month for O’Reilly again) just isn’t big news, because it’s seen as being inside their comfort zone.

That doesn’t mean McCain or Palin have to go into the MSNBC lunatic asylum to get their message out, but apparances every 6-7 days with Hannity for the next four weeks just isn’t going to break through the natural disposition by the rest of the media to ignore Ayers, ACORN, the Fannie Mae debacle or anything else damaging to Obama. Unfortunately, if McCain wants to make the case, he’s going to have to make it in a forum outside of 9 p.m. Eastern time on Fox News.

jon1979 on October 8, 2008 at 9:37 PM

I like his answer as to why he wanted Gov. Palin on the ticket.

lorien1973 on October 8, 2008 at 9:37 PM

By McCain, you must mean “a candidate that actually wants to win.” This should be an easy, easy win. This financial disaster is solely the democrats fault, and McCain is uniquely positioned to be able to distance himself from Washington and lay all of it at the feet of the Democrats.

But he won’t.

Imus hated Sarah at first but flipped for her after the convention speech… and he’s a Maverick guy already. I haven’t watched his show for a while, but Imus used to do a darned good interview. He had a classic one with Bush I after W made the gaffe about not finishing the job in Iraq the first time around.

John:

That is not fair. Democrats might be responsible for 90% of this, but Republicans ran Congress from 1995 to 2007. That makes it more difficult for McCain to blame everything on them.

Besides, what makes people think the media will let him do that all that easily? The truth is if they were not so biased it would not be necessary for McCain to try and make them pay attention to the behavior of people like Frank, they would be doing it themselves.

And yet people seem to think that since McCain can’t just lay this at their door and be done with it that he is not trying to win. It obviously is not that simple.

lorien1973 on October 8, 2008 at 9:47 PM

You guys have no sense of history. One huge reason McCain lost the primary in 2000 to GW Bush was that Rove constructed a huge story about McCain’s temperament–he was supposedly just too angry and temperamental to be POTUS.

The Axelrod MSM has tried to flog the “why are you so angry” thing over and over this year. Not to mention the “McCain is a warmonger” thing.

And most Americans don’t want a strident ideologue for POTUS. Ronald Reagan was a very genial fellow. People loved him and trusted him.

And how many national campaigns have all of you won? Local campaigns? State campaigns?

funky chicken on October 8, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Terrye on October 8, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Generally speaking, you are flat out not going to find Republicans on this issue. And more importantly, you can’t tie Bush or McCain to it. People have short memories, if you try and say “Senator xyz -(R)” supported FM in 1994, you’re not going to get very far.

McCain is in a wonderful position on this, and he won’t do jack. We lose because he’s our candidate.
