One mo’ time: The redacted SNL bailout sketch

Posted for two reasons: (1) My half-baked hope that Maverick’s lurch in the polls is due to his Fannie/Freddie attack on Monday, making any fingerpointing in this vein worth (re-)circulating, and (2) a nice catch by Andrew Malcolm at the LA Times in noticing that the controversial “People who should be shot” graphic isn’t the only thing that’s been scrubbed from this new version.

In an interview with Gold, the show’s executive producer, Lorne Michaels, said the Sandlers were distraught but had not demanded the changes. He noted the “People who should be shot” line was deleted as was a reference to their “corrupt activities.”

But a comparison of the two versions shows that actually a little more than that was cut. What also was excised was any mention of the involvement of Massachusetts’ Rep. Frank in the Sandler subprime mess…

In the original skit Sandler addresses Frank, saying, “And thank you Congressman Frank as well as many Republicans for helping block Congressional oversight of our corrupt activities.”

To which Frank replies enthusiastically, “Not at all!”

The disappeared snippet comes near the end, right after Marion Sandler tells Pelosi it’s delightful to see her. Malcolm seems to hint that they’re letting Frank off the hook, but the GOP’s also blamed in that exchange and, as Michaels says, they were obviously worried about accusing the Sandlers of “corrupt activities.” How were they supposed to get rid of that without cutting the lines about Frank?

Exit question: Are they really going to have Fred Armisen play Obama for the next four years? All he does in the Obama sketches is sit there, look sphinx-ish, and preface everything he says with The One’s clipped, “Well…”

What else HAS Obama done beside looking sphinx like

WHAT HAS OBAMA EVER DONE?

The World According to SNL?

Slow day out in bloggy land, huh?

Bishop on October 8, 2008 at 12:32 PM

The cover ups by all parts of the MSM are simply Soviet-esque in their totality.

DerKrieger on October 8, 2008 at 12:32 PM

It doesn’t matter who they have play Obama…they don’t want to criticize or mock him, so it could be anybody.

changer1701 on October 8, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Fred Armisen is more qualified to be POTUS than Obama.

Rumor has it Barney Frank pulled a back-door run on Lorne Michaels.

JammieWearingFool on October 8, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Meh. The skit did the damage it was supposed to. Maverick fired both barrels. Now he needs to reload and keep firing.

He looked great in that finely tailored suit last night. That’s an accomplishment, right? He’s also been running for President for almost two years, and he’s visited to foreign countries several times.

Awesome resume’ if you ask me.

Also: he authored two books, attended church faithfully for 20 years, was chairman of an Annenburg-funded foundation. Most importantly: he was a communit organizer. Remember…Jesus Christ was a community organizer.

Our country needs a decisive victory for McCain/Palin on 11/4.

Still a great skit and yesss!! Take every opportunity to post. Post post post.

“You’re not to speak. I don’t like you.” The Soros guy was great. How’d they get the “Owner, Democratic Party” past the SNL powers that be?

STILL wondering how GWB feels about his portrayal as the affable doormat here.

did i miss the election?

I like his Obama impression. He puts in all the proper “ums” and “uhs” and has the beat of his speaking down perfectly.

I even liked his Barney Frank impression, but he’s way to skinny to look the part even though he managed to get a double chin in there.

Esthier on October 8, 2008 at 12:46 PM

This skit seems to be accurate.

Is it just me, or is that painting in the background a painting of Gorbochov?

leetpriest on October 8, 2008 at 12:46 PM

I have a copy of the original on my desk top, ready to go if any one has an idea of how I might best use it.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 8, 2008 at 12:49 PM

They should have an empty suit on a hanger saying nothing.

Brat on October 8, 2008 at 12:52 PM

In a way I’m glad the line was scrubbed. If it said ‘and many democrats’ well that would be accurate and would really be subject to scrubbing. By deleting the inaccurate many republicans line, SNL has tamed the bias more than in the original sketch.

eaglewingz08 on October 8, 2008 at 12:55 PM

I’m thinking sphinx is a code word but I can’t find it on the e-mail list!

Every time they showed the split screen, OBambi was perched on the edge of his stool with that condescendingly sympathetic smirk on his face, as if he was being patient with that old, doddering McCain trying to match wits with him.

Scumbag marxist metrosexual castrati-soprano moron.

AubieJon on October 8, 2008 at 12:56 PM

We are very proud of you, NBC, for your ability to remove certain “facts” from this piece.

Sincerely,

The ghosts of Vladmir Lenin and Josef Stalin

“You’re not to speak. I don’t like you.” The Soros guy was great. How’d they get the “Owner, Democratic Party” past the SNL powers that be?

He was easily the best guy in the skit. The Frank actor gets second.

I’m glad they did not cut out the Sandlers entirely. Now people will Google them and learn that they are part of the Soros evil empire, and they are part of the failure of Wachovia, which is the most popular bank in America.

rockmom on October 8, 2008 at 1:13 PM

SNL revels in making a mockery of everything sacred except of course, Mohammad and the liberal junta-style freak show that is running congress. So much for being edgy and outside of the curtain of censorship….by the left. Big Brother, thy name is Soros. Lap that up you cowardly liberal comedy eunuchs. You’ve been pwned by your masters.

Redacted 2

Hey Allah, didja ever see Tim Robbins’ Bob Roberts? The uberlib “SNL” troupe leader in that one (played by uberlib John Cusak) has a hissy fit because they show’s eeeeevil capitalist overlords (nuke-maker GE) invite eeeeevil conservative Bob Roberts to perform on the show.

Twenty years later they’re still havin hissy fits over SNL’s transgressions.

“Standards” my ass.

saint kansas on October 8, 2008 at 1:16 PM

I think anytime Barney Frank appears in public, there needs to be signs, great big signs, that say: Barney Frank “Not at all” with a website to view both the original SNL skit and the “burning down the house” video.

dish on October 8, 2008 at 1:19 PM

What is most surprising about this kerfluffle is that SNL is actually semi-relevant again.

Hit em in their man purses where it counts!

Why not? That all there is.

Plus if they give Armisen any funny lines, they might risk hoardes of community activists charging through the studio…

Whoever does Obama needs to watch this video and get that annoying whistle Obama does whenever he says the letter S in a word. Drives me up the wall.

spmat on October 8, 2008 at 2:24 PM

How were they supposed to get rid of that without cutting the lines about Frank?

Edit out the word “corrupt” – “And thank you Congressman Frank as well as many Republicans for helping block Congressional oversight of our corrupt activities.”
