CBS reporter: Obama’s campaign plane stinks

posted at 7:15 pm on October 8, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Literally.  And it’s not the only thing Dean Reynolds sees wrong with the Barack Obama campaign after covering it for the past year.  He recently spent time with the John McCain team for a change of pace, and it turned out to be a much different experience:

After most of the previous 12 months covering Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency, it was interesting, instructive and, well, relaxing to follow John McCain for the last few days. The differences between the two are striking. …

Obama’s campaign schedule is fuller, more hectic and seemingly improvisational. The Obama aides who deal with the national reporters on the campaign plane are often overwhelmed, overworked and un-informed about where, when, why or how the candidate is moving about. Baggage calls are preposterously early with the explanation that it’s all for security reasons.

If so, I would love to have someone from Obama’s campaign explain why the entire press corps, the Secret Service, and the local police idled for two hours in a Miami hotel parking lot recently because there was nothing to do and nowhere to go. It was not an isolated case. …

The McCain folks are more helpful and generally friendly. The schedules are printed on actual books you can hold in your hand, read, and then plan accordingly. The press aides are more knowledgeable and useful to us in the news media. The events are designed with a better eye, and for the simple needs of the press corps. When he is available, John McCain is friendly and loquacious. Obama holds news conferences, but seldom banters with the reporters who’ve been following him for thousands of miles around the country. Go figure.

The McCain campaign plane is better than Obama’s, which is cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time. Somehow the McCain folks manage to keep their charter clean, even where the press is seated.

Sounds like the campaign press may have fallen out of love with Obama.  Perhaps that’s the antidote for Chris Matthews’ leg tingles.  Or maybe not; after all, the hagiographic coverage hasn’t exactly abated in the last few months.  Of course, most of them haven’t seen the contrast between the two campaigns like Reynolds has, either.

Reynolds describes a campaign that seems almost as lost as its candidate in a foreign-policy debate.  No one knows the schedule for the day, or at least no one wants to tell the press.  And does anyone else wonder why Team Obama seems so keen on getting their hands on the baggage of reporters?  I find it curious that the press hasn’t objected to this yet.

Read the entire account, and ask yourself which candidate appears to be the best executive just on the basis of the campaign — which Barack Obama assures us serves as his qualification for office.

When grownups run a campaign, things are just better.

Sanjoboy on October 8, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Well that “close call” when Obama’s airplane had to make a emergancy landing and went down, what 5000 feet, due to a inflated slider, probably made all the reports crap their pants.

I would assume that is where the smell is coming from!

I have ZERO sympathy for the media in this case. They created this mess, they should be forced to live with his stink as punishment.

Yep, great metaphor for what an Obama Presidency would look like. Hey! Maybe Zucker could do an Airplane! remake with Team Barry as the inspiration for the comic disaster.

And don’t say that Michelle O didn’t warn you that Barack smells bad.

hippie_chucker on October 8, 2008 at 7:23 PM

And does anyone else wonder why Team Obama seems so keen on getting their hands on the baggage of reporters?

To stop the press from looking into Sen. Obama’s baggage?

malclave on October 8, 2008 at 7:24 PM

So, the few things Obama has adminstrative experience at, appear to be rather shoddy in how they’re run and/or lacking in meaningful results.

aikidoka on October 8, 2008 at 7:25 PM

Well it would be interesting what the smell was:

1. bad B.O. and I ain’t talking Obama (or maybe I am!)
2. garbage… and we know how liberals HATE to clean that up.
3. poop, look at my comment @ 7:22
4. The fact that not even vacuuming and everyone goes to the restrooms (eww) are probably smelling like urine at this moment.
5. I don’t know many good reports who shower regularly. Do you?

upinak on October 8, 2008 at 7:25 PM

Obama’s associations stink!
McCain and Palin need to begin to carry around these photos of Ayers standing on the American flag,, especially the photo fo Ayers dancing on the flag,, and begin showing them to the american people at events and especially in the next debate!
A picture is worth a thousand words!
That picture puts a face on Ayers and needs little explanation!
McCain should hold that photo up to the people and to obama at the next debate,, ask Obama to explain why he chose to launch his political future out of that man’s living room!
Show the photo!

Well, if we go on THE ONE’S own words, just words; we are supposed to judge him by how he has run his campaign. Is that not what we were told when he was comparing his resume to Governor Palin’s resume?

Is that mendacity I smell coming from the Obama plane? Yep, it sure is!

Whitey says Black man’s plane stinks. Reporter a Republican racist plant. Headlines tomorrow.

I thought managing a campaign was one of Barack’s biggest accomplishments?

originalpechanga on October 8, 2008 at 7:27 PM

Maybe the campaign didn’t want to take away any union jobs.

originalpechanga on October 8, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Hardly surprising given the way the press has been wetting themselves over BO. Plane must smell like a Tenderloin doorway.

ronsfi on October 8, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Maybe it is the Obama hypnotic love gas they pump through the ductwork that makes the plane smell so bad.

ctmom on October 8, 2008 at 7:29 PM

How could the plane smell bad? Michelle Obama and Andrea Mitchell look like they have such a wonderful um, scent.

marklmail on October 8, 2008 at 7:29 PM

Finally the attack that will win McCain the presidency.

e-pirate on October 8, 2008 at 7:29 PM

I would gather that the plane is the only place he gets to smoke. Anyplace that has smoking will eventually start smelling musty and nasty if they are trying to cover up the smell.

broker1 on October 8, 2008 at 7:29 PM

That picture of Ayers also puts a face on the kinds of associations Obama has that will be obvious to the American people!
McCain needs to show that picture! It says it all!

(confident I’m not the first to say that)

RushBaby on October 8, 2008 at 7:36 PM

How does one explain why Obama doesn’t banter with reporters and the plane smells?

The odor is probably coming from Barry smoking his KOOLs while he hides out in the baggage compartment.

fogw on October 8, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Must smell like Caprini-Green….

moseby on October 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

My, my. It’s a long way from that video during the primary in which Obama had his leg up on an armrest to show off the crotch of his jeans, and the women reporters were yelling at someone, “Agent, agent, get out of the way!” so they could get a better view..

Wethal on October 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

When O! came to visit my town in Missouri back in August, one of folks I work with at Missouri University of Science and Technology had some interesting comments about the organization of O!’s campaign. This fellow I work with was responsible for ensuring that the Obama’s campaign would have access to the Internet in the building they were holding the event in. The Obama aide my buddy was forced to talk to seemed utterly clueless about the tech issues and simply brushed off my buddy–who takes his responsibilities very seriously and professionally, even for a candidate he despises. This Obama aide apparently uses only his Blackberry as his mobile office, and doesn’t seem to understand the usefulness of other technology like laptops. It was quite an eye-opener to say the least. I could go on, but space is limited…

lordsquirrel on October 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

This simply shows what type of organizational skills we can expect if Obama becomes President. Marking yet another reason why he is unqualified. If you can’t even get your act together for your campaign, how can you run the freaking country?

mindhacker on October 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Well, what goes around comes around. The press has stunk up the coverage and now they can sit in their own waste for the next 4 years. It is quite strange that any complaint is heard. All year it has been so wonderful to be covering “The One”… I guess the drugs wore off for a little while today.

Articles like this one are one of the reasons NETWORK NEWS IS DYING – AND NOT A MOMENT TO SOON!!!
We the people are sick and tired of you lousy lopsided coverage. You”ve now lowered yourself even further by complaining about standing around in parking lots and the way a bus smells when this country, the world is facing an unbelievable worldwide economy crisis! I can only hope Dean Reynolds that you find yourself unemployed soon and facing some of the real economic challenges that most Americans & other people in this world are dealing with everyday – then perhaps you will look back and recognize that you blew the opportunity to contribute something useful through your role as a reporter as opposed to the useless *** above that you wasted your time on. And the producer/editor that allowed it to be printed is as big an idiot as you clearly are. The day the CBs News disappears can not come soon enough! – Posted by Igetit1 at 07:47 PM : Oct 08, 2008

The Obama aides who deal with the national reporters on the campaign plane are often overwhelmed, overworked and un-informed about where, when, why or how the candidate is moving about.

…the Third Clinton Administration…a frat-boy government…they’ll cast about and the one among them with the least acne will get to be the on-camera press guy….

THIS is the sort of thing that the media should be reporting…it’s good to do all that “40-acres-and-a-mule” campaign promising bullsh*t, but you might actually be expected by some quarters to deliver…that’ll take organizational abilities…which’ll mean that you have to have a good staff…and that you’ll have to inform them once in a while….

…unless, like Clinton, you reneg on your campaign promises hours after being elected, and spend your term or terms playing it by ear…White House staffies thinking that their fecal material isn’t odiforous…borrowing helicopters to make golf tee-times…thinking that national governance is “cool”….

The McCain campaign plane is better than Obama’s, which is cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time.

…are you surprised? It’s full of reporters….
