Obama’s up nine nationally, the Dow’s down 500 again, and you and I need a break. So let’s do what our grandparents did during the last depression: Escape into moronic entertainment. Who knows? The way things are going, by January this site might be a gossip blog.
T-minus 4:17 until the debate. Breathe.

Comfort foods and movies with talking animals. This will be our consolation prize to ease the pain from the death of conservatism and American Exceptionalism.

‘69 Camaro for me. Loud 80s music like Night Ranger. Gettin’ sideways in the high school parking lot with Still Rock in America turned up real loud, while knowing that President Reagan was on the job, stomping on commies.
The 80s ruled. Nothing else to say.

A-ha (or its individual members) remain cultural icons in Norway. I once visited some friends in Oslo. Their grandmother pointed at a house across the fjord (yes, a real fjord) and proudly told me that the former singer for A-ha lives there.
At least they didn’t get stuck with Bjork.

My (admittedly weak) contribution to the mindset of your local leftist. To the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic:
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
His name is Barack Obama, he will fight the Jewish Horde
O be swift my soul to vote for him, lots of times because I’m bored
His Dear Leaderness marches onnnnnn.
Glory, Glory Hallelujah! Obama is Messiah what’s it toooo yah! Glory, Glory Hallelujah! Communism marches onnnnnnn!
He has got the endorsement of all the Anti-USA.
He thinks the American Flag is nothing but hooey
He has eaten so much pork that he’ll likely burst some day
His Cultists are marching onnnnnnn.
Glory Glory Hallelujah! If you don’t love Obama we’ll sue yah! Squashing Dissent is patriotic and in prison we will throw yah! The MSM is slobbering onnnn (Obama).
In the beauty of Indonesia He was born across the sea…
With a glory in his package that makes reporters cream
As he lied to get his glory… let us lie to make him King!
And Obama marches on!
Glory, Glory Hallelujah! Koslings fight to worship him, ja. His buddies kill troops and Damn America boo-yah,
His Mandatory Service Corp marches onnnnnn!
We have seen all those posters in a thousand circling camps. They will elect statutes to His Grace in every town in France. If you dissent from worship of Him there’s a racist in your pants! And we’ll make Rethugs begone (forever)!
Glory Glory Praise Obama! He is more holy than the Dalai Llama! With Him we’ll burn Rethuglicans for drama!
Our God is Marching Onnnnnn!

Watching that made me want to pull-on my old parachute pants (the ones with zip open sides), a skin tight tank top with Japanese symbols on it and a pair of bright-white Pony™ hi tops.

I was more the guitar playing rocker type at the time, so A-Ha came across as sissy la-la to me. I remember being quite disappointed with myself that I actually liked the video when I first saw it. Still do.
And they’re still a sissy band.

Yes, I will admit to liking a few of the TT tunes and BIJ was an awesome tune, even if the dude was weird as hell.

But I bet this is how Caesar felt–he really was a God, right?
What’s the difference between how Kos treats Obama and how the ancients prayed to Caesar? Besides a few variations of “not quite as blatant here”?

ManlyRash on October 7, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Yes yes, truly a lost age. I was in the Navy in San Fran when Dirty Harry was chief in Monterey, you could see him occasionally cruising or walking the streets (though it was a rare thing).
I was in during the height of the Reagan military build-up; more ships than we knew what to do with and if we needed something, we got it.

Hey, our era produced the Clash, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, the Police, Mott the Hoople, the Pretenders, the Cars, the Talking Heads, XTC, Blondie, Squeeze, Thomas Dolby… And to think they talk about “diversity” today!
I miss being in college during a time when students were more concerned with each others’ musical tastes than with radical politics. My school had the Dead Heads on one end of the spectrum and the radio station jocks (blues, punk, ska, new wave) at the other. I fancy I could still slip-cue a record if I had to. Happy times.

I’m too young to have appreciated stuff like this in its original time – Dec 1982 baby here. But I always liked that song and video. Heck, most 80’s music is teh awesome, especially Devo.
I have so many songs stuck in my head right now, it’s not funny. I’m off to go watch some Police videos right now.

Why can’t my generation create great music? One time when I was listening to classic rock on the radio, my dad asked, “Why can’t you get your own music?” Oh well.

Jaysus…you’re a kid. I was out of college for a year when you were born. O man….I’m old. *sigh*
ManlyRash on October 7, 2008 at 6:45 PM
My late dad – born in 1932 – used to say the same thing, although I did develop a healthy appreciation for music from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s – even if he could never get into the DePeche Mode. Fortunately, I was the bridge between generations and therefore able to enjoy much of the music my own kids enjoy. My daughter loves 80’s tunes and my son is a huge fan of the Big Bands and Doo Wop groups.
It’s all good.

I’m in the same boat only a year older. When in December? Mine’s the 19th.
Honestly though I’m glad I was only a child back thing. Neon seemed cool as a kid, but I think it would have been embarrassing as a teen or an adult.
Plus I’m kinda glad I don’t remember Reagan as president. I get the feeling it would make me depressed to see how far we’ve come. Though I do agree with Manly. Coming of age with Clinton was no picnic. Still, it was nice to help get Bush in office as my first vote. He’s no Reagan, but Gore would’ve been horrible.
