Video: Palin hits Obama on wanting to meet with Ahmadinejad

Simply scandalous — coming from a Republican. If McCain was eight points up and Harry Reid was out on the stump talking about how Maverick’s insane temper might just lead us into a nuclear war, or the left was putting out 527 ads about how his POW experience makes him a tad too unstable to trust with the button, well, that’d be good ol’ hardball politics. Before the next predictable wave of fresh outrage descends, refresh your memory with the facts: Not until fairly recently did The One refine his blanket invitation to meet with the world’s scummiest leaders to exclude Ahmadinejad. His aides finally figured out that gladhanding a notorious Holocaust denier and Jew-hater probably wouldn’t be good for Obama’s image, so at some point we segued from “I’ll meet with anyone” to “I’ll meet with certain Iranian leaders.” Here’s the guy, presumably, whom he has in mind. Feel better?

All that said, I still agree with Ross Douthat. As a left jab, the attacks on Obama’s character via Ayers, Wright, etc., are fine. But we’re down big on points right now and need an economic right hook. Where is it?

That’s McCain’s job. He didn’t do it in the first debate. He needs to do it tonight. Sarah is doing the VP role wonderfully. McCain needs to step up.

Leave that to McCain, my Dark Master. He will deal with the Obi-ONE on this issue. Darth Palin will attack him on the others. Darkness will prevail.

(sound of ominous mechanical beathing as dramatic music fades in and reaches crescendo)

ManlyRash on October 7, 2008 at 6:51 PM

…and need an economic right hook. Where is it?

That one can’t come from Palin, it has to come from McCain, he has to tie the Dems to “how we got in here” and then define how we’ll get out.
President sets policy.

ChrisM on October 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Ok Sarah – now go convince McCain to support drilling in ANWAR, shipping illegals home, screw Wall Street, and attack that Socialist Obama where he lives.

Outside that.

See you in 2012 Gov. Palin.

And,,, thank you for being a great American.

It’s coming tonight and will continue to be heaped upon Obama until Nov 4th! McCain will take the gloves off and place the blame for the economic and financial meltdown where it belongs, on the dems, Obama via ACORN, and Obama’s own financial advisors to his campaign!

So it’s not important that Obama was apprentice to a ’60s radical — a guy who’s still holding out hope that his way might still work! — and Obama continues to lie about it. People don’t need to know that.

EMD on October 7, 2008 at 6:55 PM

Palin is throwing the right punches. McCain just needs to boil these combos down to two or three big hits in the debate tonight. Each of these need to be simple, forceful and “sticky” in that they establish a clear characterization of Obama in the minds of voters.

My knees are knocking in anticipation of McCain going completely new…cue…luhr.

eaglescout1998 on October 7, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Actually, this is a good tactic by Sarah Palin. Remember how, a few weeks ago, the MSM derided her going to the UN to meet with foreign leaders? Obviously, she didn’t meet Ahmadinejad (she’s too smart for that!), but she did hear him speak at the UN, and heard first-hand how crazy he is. So, she can keep this issue simmering on the back burner, while McCain talks about the economy in the debate. After all, HE was in the Senate trying to reform Fannie and Freddie, not Palin.

Besides, Jacksonville is a good place to bring this up–lots of military folks there!

Steve Z on October 7, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Hey AP – McCain talked about the economy and how the Dems blew it all day Monday in Abq, NM. Why don’t you link to that 10-minute speech? Just because the MSM has silenced any and all stump speech coverage that McCain gives that involves anything more than “smear” tactics doesn’t mean he’s not delivering.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4wgwKPQIhI

jwehman on October 7, 2008 at 7:01 PM

Today the media told us that if McCain kept up all this talk about Obama & terrorists, he would alienate voters.

And if he should be so bold as to be aggressive during the debate, he will lose big.

Hours before the debate starts Barry’s minions clarify that he actually did know about Ayers past. Wasn’t it just yesterday that Barry had no idea?

Make no mistake, Obama is on the defense. If he feels really threatened he’ll be making references to his race this evening.

Watch For It.

Dorvillian on October 7, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Why don’t you link to that 10-minute speech?

Because whining is easier.

thirteen28 on October 7, 2008 at 7:04 PM

The McCain campaign is welcome to use this bit –

“The Democrats in Congress created a new federal agency to give billions of dollars worth of loans to people with bad credit. They patterned it after Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They call it Barnie Frank.”

rw on October 7, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Sarah is doing exactly what the second in command is expected to do; destroy the opposition, take the heat and let the old man take care of business. McCain will handle the economic issues and Sarah will air Obama’s dirty laundry. Palin is a big draw, very popular, and extremely capable of informing and teaching the public. McCain can continue the challenge to Obama during the debate and articulate his domestic/economic road map at the same time. His advantage is that Sarah has already done most of the heavy lifting for him. The last time I looked Obama had no one to do his heavy lifting. We’ll just have to wait and see what the outcome is.

rplat on October 7, 2008 at 7:04 PM

Well I think the “right hook” would be the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac stuff. It seems to me that it would be a good strategy to have Palin attack mainly on the character issues and McCain to attack mainly on the economy.

I just hope he really brings it to Obama in this debate though I’m not holding my breath.

I don’t know if the national media are reporting this, but there were 3,000 people who couldn’t get into The Landing and waited a half-block away just to catch a glimpse of Palin coming out

Janos Hunyadi on October 7, 2008 at 7:06 PM

AP, the last thing McCain needs to do is what the New York Times says he should do. Yes, he should talk about the economy, but letting up on Ayers, et al would be a mistake.

lorien1973 on October 7, 2008 at 7:12 PM

The “sub-prime” mortgage mess is a prime example of why redistribution of wealth doesn’t work. That’s all McCain and/or Palin have to say because that’s exactly what it is.

Enoxo on October 7, 2008 at 7:20 PM

So you support amnesty?

Do you support strategy?

Jim Treacher on October 7, 2008 at 7:23 PM

I don’t think it is a bad deal for Sarah to go after Obama on character issues. She and McCain do not have to do the same thing.

And McCain did go after Obama and the Democrats yesterday on the Fannie Mae collapse. I would think that if the opportunity presents itself tonight he would do it again.

As for being 8 behind, I wonder. I have posted this on a couple of other threads, and maybe I am just being silly, but I saw this post at Strata-Sphere:

It seems McCain is not the only one who took a hit in the public eye on the financial bailout – Obama is also starting to lose ground. Two recent polls show the erosion. First is a Democracy Corps poll I noted in an earlier post, which has some interesting internals. On key issues Obama has lost his edge:

* Shares Your Values: 47-47 (a tie)
* Independent: 43-46 (+3 McCain)
* Strong Leader: 42-51 (+9 McCain)
* Economy: 49-43 (-6 McCain)
* Stands Up To Special Interests: 45-44 (-1 McCain)
* National Security: 34-60 (+26 McCain)
* Financial Crisis: 46-44 (-2 McCain)

What these illustrate is the fact McCain and Obama are becoming equals on economic issues, but McCain is getting kudos for being a strong and independent leader, and huge kudos on national security.

The second poll is the Diageo/Hotline Poll which also shows massive erosion for Obama:

After trailing by 5-7 pts. for the last 10 days, McCain is now just 2 pts. behind Obama.

Obama’s one-time lead on the question of who’d best handle the economy has evaporated. Today, Obama and McCain are tied at 42%. Independent voters favor McCain on the economy by an 8 pt. margin (42-34%).

That is a precipitous drop going from +7 to +2 (basically a tie) in only a few days. I am not surprised to see this “a pox on both your houses” attitude hitting the public. The ‘bailout’ did not give immediate gratification and stop the hemorrhaging on Wall Street. Dick Morris was right when he predicted the race would tighten, though I doubt even he thought it would be this quick. If Obama loses his edge on the economy he probably cannot pull out a win. Morris may be right on another angle here – Obama peaked too soon.

Could the whole operation chaos thing have messed up the demographics and thrown off the polls?

Terrye on October 7, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Maybe we can suggest that if folks think the use of the full name “Barack Hussein Obama” is racist, then they shouldn’t vote for it when it appears on the ballot. They do use full names, don’t they, or at least a middle initial?

SnarkVader on October 7, 2008 at 7:08 PM

I don’t think she wants to go there. It’s not much of an issue in Alaska, but she probably knows that a position either way could get McCain in trouble, either with the GOP base or with Hispanic voters. It’s not a major issue right now, might as well leave it alone.

If she is asked about it, she could duck the question by saying, “From Canada or Russia?”

Steve Z on October 7, 2008 at 7:37 PM

I agree with those that say it is time for McCain to man-up on the economy. Now that Palin has had the cuffs removed and is out there with the people, she is gaining votes for the ticket.

But it won’t be enough unless McCain can kick Obama in the throat over the economy. I don’t care how he does it and I don’t care if he is mean or not, he needs to beat the crap out of Obama on this issue. I’m not in panic mode just yet but this will be it for big audiences for debates. No one will be interested in a third debate.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s secret MySpace entry:

Hi there fellow Islamic bloggers. My name is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and I am the great and fearless President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and soon to be the defacto President of Iraq too!

I was was born one of seven children to a humble blacksmith and when I was a child growing up I worked on a farm to earn extra money for my poor father and I got to know a lot of the farm animals very well. I was a real nature boy back then. I was a real animal lover. My favorites were the goats of course. I still have such fond memories of my boyhood.

Later I excelled as a student, earning my master’s degree and a Ph.D in civil engineering. I have only three wives, but as the leader of such a great Islamic country and soon to be the dominate power in the Middle East I feel that it is time for me to take my fourth wife. If any nice Islamic ladies are reading this you should email me some time soon. You must be between the ages of 12 and 28 years old, although for Sarah Palin I would make an exception if she divorced her current husband and converted to Islam. If you are under 12 that would be alright too but you must have a note from a male relative of course.

In addition to my important duties as the Great President of the Islamic Republic of Iran I am now working on my post graduate science project, which when completed in a very few years, I will test on Evil Israel and the Great Satin America.

Who I would like to meet … …
In addition to my fourth wife, and remember if you are under 12 years old, you must have a note from a male
relative, I would like to meet other dedicated members of the Great Religion of Slaughter Peace, Islam of course. We can all get together after work and spend time reading inspiring passages from the Koran and comparing notes on our mutual love of farm animals. We can also go over a list of priority
test sites for my developing science project. It will be a blast!

lorien1973 on October 7, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Being a townhall format, I’m fairly sure that the audience composed of strictly independent, undecided voters will not ask McCain anything about the financial crisis where he can appropriately repeat what he has been saying today hanging it on Democrats and pointing out that Obama lied about McCain’s record on it and that Obama has done… “zip, zero, nada”. The questions will be more along the lines of asking him about every vote he had that agreed with Bush, one by one, so they can try to tie McCain to Bush. Maybe Mr. Undecided Independent Ponytail Guy will be there to cry and ask again what the country is going to do for him…

The part I’m really looking for is how many questions will contain the words “hope” and/or “change”… you know… truly undecideds…

Town Hall settings don’t work well for anger, unless there are some obvious plants, like Ponytail Guy from ‘92, who Brokaw calls on tonight who are in the tank for Obama and are openly hostile to McCain in their questioning. Then the home viewers will understand Maverick being snippy back.

But even if that doesn’t happen, McCain’s going to get some questions on the economy, and he can use his 2003-04 efforts to increase Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac oversight as a way of showing all those viewers who didn’t watch Saturday Night Live past 11:45 p.m. EDT last week why this mess falls in the Democrats’ lap. Then it’s up to him to frame at least a foundation for an economic plan in a forum he’s comfortable with, and at a time when people are still completely focused on the Dow drops and their own personal finances over other issues (yes, you can attack Obama on Ahmadinejad and/or Ayers tonight, but don’t obsess over it).

In theory anyway, as an Arizonan he should have a greater appreciation for the impact that illegal immigration has on communities than one might expect Palin to have, so even from the standpoint of “expertise” you’d expect that the ticket would reflect McCain’s position. Even if Palin were every conservative’s dream on immigration, it’s unlikely that McCain is going to come around in the next 4 weeks.

We have a better chance on ANWR. I’ll be happy if she can move McCain further along on drilling… he’s shifted a bit already, but I wish he’d move on ANWR before the election.

You could put good ole conservative Fred! Thompson on the ticket and that still wouldn’t change McCain in a fundamental way, certainly not in a few weeks. The VP candidate’s job is to support the top of the ticket and get him elected. Palin is doing that very well. I think she’s also starting to influence McCain, but it will take time.

Reference it as an aside, but make the main attack the economic meltdown.

lorien1973 on October 7, 2008 at 7:54 PM

I think she has been. Allah is selecting these clips for the red meat factor. And then of course he takes a huge crap in the punchbowl. :-)

Seriously, a lot of her rhetoric is designed to be easy sound bite material for play on prime time. Oslime-a does the same thing.

As a left jab, the attacks on Obama’s character via Ayers, Wright, etc., are fine. But we’re down big on points right now and need an economic right hook. Where is it?

They are only showing video’s of her lambasting Obama on Ayers and Ahmadinejad but the truth is she has gone on the offensive about the economy as well as Obama’s Tax policies. The media wants to show her and MacCain as being out of touch.

Dritanian on October 7, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Obama has a glass jaw.

Keep jabbing at his jutting ego.

Then ask him if he wants a smoke.

And, since he called McCain “John” all the time in the last debate (to try to diminish the Senator), McCain should call him “Barry” all the time (to remind people that Barack has a chameleon hidden behind his “cool” exterior).

profitsbeard on October 7, 2008 at 8:04 PM

All that said, I still agree with Ross Douthat. As a left jab, the attacks on Obama’s character via Ayers, Wright, etc., are fine. But we’re down big on points right now and need an economic right hook. Where is it?

Good point. Attacking on international diplomacy tactics isn’t likely to move the poll numbers sufficiently. The mortgage meltdown will probably be #1-with-a-bullet on voter’s hit lists. Pinning blame on the Democrats and their corruption and cronyism is essential, hope it’s sufficient.

I’d prefer “the Senator from Chicago”

The part I’m really looking for is how many questions will contain the words “hope” and/or “change”… you know… truly undecideds…

Oh, I’m expecting the audience to be filled with “concerned Christian conservatives” — or was that last week’s astroturf? I have such a hard time keeping up!

SnarkVader:

Don’t mention the amnesty problem. See, any issue that, well for lack of a better descriptor, McCain sucks a** on, you’re not supposed to talk about it. The logic is, Obama is bad, therefore McCAin is great. You’re not supposed to bring up anything, like, oh, 8 years of his past voting record on certain issues, that would remind people what a conniving, worthless lump he really is. Just trust, that when McCain is elected, light will shine down, and everything will be perfect.
And when he passes the amnesty and gives the democrats a new 20-30 million person voting block to pander to, you can say ‘Oh, that was the strategy.’ This isn’t actually HotAir anymore. Apparently, some are trying to make it pumpupourbumcandidatebynottalkingabouthissh*ttyrecord.com.

Issues don’t matter SnarkVader, as long as he has an ‘R’ next to his name. I’m hoping if we can cast the amnesty web wide enough, we can get Hugo Chavez citizenship. Just think what a great candidate he would be if he put an ‘R’ next to his name. Talk about reaching across the aisle.

I want to hear John McCain say he’s going to pardon the two federal immigration agents that are rotting in jail right now.

freedom_nut on October 7, 2008 at 8:11 PM

I heard on the radio today that an estimated 12 million sub prime mortgages were fraudulently obtained by illegal immigrants.

You know, I’m glad we all agreed that it wasn’t fair that poor people didn’t own homes. Life in America is soooooo much better now.

I live in Cape Coral (mortgage fraud central), Florida. In Aug 06, my neighbor sold his home to an “investor” for $635K. The purchaser (who never spent a day in the home) sold it a month and a half later to a buyer for $1 million. I became interested and, via the internet records available here on properties and court deed/mortgage information, began checking it out. Seems there was a group of people buying homes and then selling them in circles within their group, marking them up $200K to $500K each time (every few months). The activity I found with this group went back into late ‘04 and continued into mid ‘06. Of the transactions I checked, the group had done over $30 million in mortgages and, based on what they originally paid for the house before selling it in circles, they made well over $10 million “profit”. I called FBI and every Florida law enforcement agency there was… they DID NOTHING. I contacted the local newspaper. They got interested and ran two big spreads on it and put the squeeze on the county appraiser’s office. They contacted me saying they would take all I could give them. I went back to my research and in about a week, I had over $100 million worth of clearly fraudulent transactions. By this time, I also knew a lot more. The people involved were an attorney (closing), an appraiser, a mortgage broker and a realty company. All sub-prime loans… I gave the $100 million worth to the appraiser. To date, nothing has been done. I know for a fact fraud was committed because three of the mortgage companies involved called me back after I forwarded the information to them to talk to me about it. The readily admitted that on the information I gave them, not so much as one single mortgage payment had been made and most of the people involved had many, many mortgages (based on county records) that did not appear on their credit information prepared by the mortgage broker…. in their words, clearly fraud. Again… nothing done. Most of the properties involved were waterfront with gulf access and ranged in prices from $500K to $1.5 million.

If I had to place a bet and these mortgages were truly investigated, I would guess that outright fraud was the vast majority of transactions. There were countless properties I looked at where they were purchased using sub-prime and 100% financing that were clearly hundreds of thousands higher than the value should have been that became abandoned the day they were sold.

I thought there were people we paid to catch this sort of thing… I thought wrong.

I could write a book on the topic of mortgage fraud.

The Republican candidate for Vice President not giving an opinion on one of the most important and contentious issues in this country is strategy?

SnarkVader on October 7, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Do you hear Obama, Biden, McCain talking about it? It’s just another elephant in the room for all candidates. Quit taunting like you’ve discovered some big item missing from her talking points.
