Survey USA: Obama by 15 in Pennsylvania

Share on Facebook | regular view

Another horrifying SUSA state poll that oversamples Dems (50/39), another lead so wide that even a correctly weighted sample probably still equals a double-digit advantage for The One. Quinnipiac also had him by 15 last week and something called Morning Call Tracking has him up 10. The RCP spread: 11 points, four more than the current margin in Michigan, where Maverick’s already abandoned ship.

The most alarming number:

Obama today leads among PA men and women, young and old, rich and poor, more educated and less educated. McCain leads among Republicans, conservatives, pro-life voters, and gun owners. 21% of Republicans cross over to vote for Obama; 16% of Democrats cross over to vote for McCain. Independents break 2:1 for Obama.

The CBS poll last night had McCain marginally ahead among indies nationally so maybe this is an outlier, but I’m not sure what to make of the idea that Obama’s suddenly pulling more Republicans than McCain is Democrats. It’s been the opposite all year thanks to the PUMAs. But if that number’s an outlier too, why were there also more Obamicans than McCainocrats in the Virginia and New Hampshire polls from yestrerday? Given that Rasmussen has The One by eight and Gallup by nine, it’s probably CBS that’s the outlier, not SUSA.

Or is it?

Exit question: What would qualify as a gamechanger tonight? Gingrich and Rich Lowry agree that the only way out lies through a compelling economic message, but the economy’s always been a subplot to Maverick’s campaign. To remake his whole candidacy as an economic warrior a month out from election day would feel like a, er, stunt, but what choice does he have?

Let’s do what Limbaugh did in 2000. Stick with the poll that shows your guy ahead (in that case, Battleground). That poll will be the one to rely on for the duration of the campaign, and all other polls are to be considered biased and/or outliers.

YYZ on October 7, 2008 at 2:40 PM

No, this is just another example of shoddy editing…it was just a simple typo.

What they meant to say is MCCAIN/PALIN up 15% in Pa.

Oh well, too late to change it now.

SaintOlaf on October 7, 2008 at 2:41 PM

I am not believing these polls one bit.

21% Republican crossover. Yeah right.

Drill_Thrawl on October 7, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Game over, man. Gamer over.

Not to depress the doom and gloomers but Fox said their poll says 10% undecided, but a full 25% said they could change mind before the vote. That’s a ton of mobility.

Spirit of 1776 on October 7, 2008 at 2:41 PM

I don’t believe the polls. I really don’t. It’s all stacked FOR Obama. The media’s in the tank for him so why not the polls?

If they’re registering voters in Ohio with no proof of ANYTHING and then driving them to vote, then I can safely choose to NOT believe in the polls.

You think our country’s been divided since Bush won in 2000 and then again in 2004, just wait until after November 4th. We’ll be hopelessly and forevermore split. If McCain wins, then OMG, the DEM’s heads will explode. It will be a racist coup ya know. If Obama wins, I’m telling you right now, he will NOT be my president and I know I’m not alone in my thoughts. The DEMS will be infuriated that we feel that way about the Messiah. They’ll accuse us of dissing THE ONE. It will be a split we will never overcome (or at least in no time soon.)

Whoa, whoa guys stop w/the Pennsylvanians elect Murtha crap. He is elected by his district only. The rest of the state has nothing to say about it. That said, he keeps bringing the pork home, so they keep voting for him.

From Wiki “The 12th Pennsylvania congressional district is located in southwestern Pennsylvania. It is a heavily Gerrymandered district. It consists of all of Greene County, and parts of Allegheny, Armstrong, Cambria, Fayette, Indiana, Somerset, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties.

The district was drawn specifically for Murtha, including many heavily Democratic regions, while leaving more right-leaning Pittsburgh suburban regions to the 4th or 18th district, and rural conservative regions to the 3rd or 9th district.”

JAM on October 7, 2008 at 2:43 PM

I remember the 2000 elections. I was hanging on Rasmussen’s every word – after all he’d been all over Fox and he knew what he was doing. Bush had it won but it would be close. Yeah, right.

These polls are a pile of crap. The only one that matters is on election day, and the exit polling is crap that day as well, ie, the folks calling states for Kerry based on exit polls.

21% of GOPers go to Obama?

AP has become like some of the trolls. He thinks the only way to get attention is to throw out these poll numbers that are slanted towards Obama…controversy gets you attention, but it wears thin with no substance.
AP,you are still a good analyst, I know that Ed has stolen some of your thunder, but you are still worthy of reading. Don’t fall into that trap of thinking you have to be shocking for people to read you. Yes, Ed does a great job, but your ok also, you don’t need to go down this path.

right2bright on October 7, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Absolutely refuse to believe it.

Akzed on October 7, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Don’t believe it

According to major American polling organizations Obama is so far ahead of John McCain that some pundits are predicting a landslide – and I am too: but for McCain/Palin.

There’s an emotional bias to this: I simply don’t believe Americans are stupid enough to vote Obama into office – but then I couldn’t believe anyone would vote for Clinton over the first President Bush either.

Luckily, there’s a more rational basis too: specifically, I think there’s some evidence that there’s something fundamentally wrong with polling these days – and it’s possible to guess that the underlying cause is a difference in willingness to answer polls between the two sides.

The evidence is based on human behavior, specifically on a consequence of Leon Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance. That theory predicts that people will seek out information confirming already held views while actively avoiding contrary information.

Consider, with this in mind, the complete contradiction between the polling numbers reported with respect to attitudes toward Sarah Palin and the actual turnout and enthusiasm you see everywhere she turns up. The polls are uniformly negative but the reality is that Republican organizers can’t find stadiums big enough to hold the crowds she draws.

Similarly polls done for movie studios uniformly show the strongest market for anti-war movies since the end of the sixties – but the actual movies flub horribly at the box office.

The dissonance reducing behavior predicted by Festinger’s theory has been demonstrated many times – and not least by the success of sites like the dailykos and hotair.com. But, if the polls are right, movies like Zucker’s An American Carol should be box office failures – and things like Redacted blockbusters – while John McCain and Sarah Palin should draw only a handful of depressed supporters to major market events.

Since the theory suggests a disconnect between polling results and what we’re seeing people spend time and money on, we have two choices: either the theory is wrong, or the polls are wrong.

A lot of people have put a lot of effort into debunking Festinger’s theory – but, in general, its predictions seem to hold up.

When we look at the polls, however, the field is both much more varied and much more questionable – it’s easy, for example, for a very small group of committed people to mislead panel surveys by working on a few panel members, or for a slightly larger group to mislead pollsters relying on random samples by giving misleading answers on the questions used to compute sample weights.

And what that tells me, is that the polls are wrong.

Paul Murphy on October 7, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Obama leads 2:1 in the Philadelphia area, leads by 10 points in the Scranton area, and nominally in the Pittsburgh area. McCain leads by double digits in Harrisburg and ties Obama in Johnstown.

I doubt Obama will win the Scranton area by 10, if at all. McCain will do better than Bush in Pittsburgh and W-PA, and the tie in Johnstown (Murtha-Russell race) sounds about right. McCain winning Harrisburg? No way. I now live in the Harrisburg area and there’s no way MCain is winning it. The city is heavily D and predominantly black. The suburbs are full of big government stooges. It’s one of the only places in PA where Obama beat Hillary.

Anyway, to come up with a 15% Obama lead from all of this, they must have heavily over-polled the 610 and 215 area codes (Scranton and Philly).

Things will even up before the election.

This round of attacks will get a few points, I think.

We still haven’t heard about ACORN, though, and that is an organization that the majority of Americans would detest, and Obama will be forced to throw them under the bus if it was brought up. Let Palin trot it out, next week.

I didn’t buy the polls in the last election, I certainly don’t put any stock in these polls now. I think the best way to judge what people are thinking and feeling is to look and the crowds that Palin/McCain are pulling in. One look at Palin’s crowds suggests to me that the polls are BS. Her crowds are my polls, and I’m not going to get myself in a tizzy over poll numbers that are as full of cr@p as the MSM.
Besides, like my grandmother always tells me, do you know anyone that is ever polled? I don’t. They aren’t calling me, my family, friends, neighbors, or otherwise.

Something to keep in mind when it comes to PA is the age of people here. It’s an old state, which means people are more likely to rely on the MSM for information. Not a good thing this election. The polls could well be accurate, though I doubt he’s up by 15 here. He’s definitely up though.

We’re only going to be able to counter the MSM by word of mouth, and convincing others to do the same in PA. If you can volunteer for McCain or a down ticket person, do it. We’re also going to have to light a fire under the worthless PA GOP.

I saw mention of a raid on ACORN in Las Vegas above. Screw the race card; McCain needs to tell the country that Obama’s GOTV arm, ACORN, is stealing the election out from underneath their noses. It’s cropping up all over the country.

He needs to point out that FEC is looking into Obama for overseas contributions.

I think these themes will ring consistent with the ad that McGovern is running during the debate about the private- union-vote measure that Obama supports. The bill is unquestionably undemocratic and un-American.

BuckeyeSam on October 7, 2008 at 2:53 PM

The Obama-PA campaign is trying to paint him as a tax-cutting conservative. They’re even citing negative comments made about McCain by National Review.

The Obama-PA campaign literature is truly jaw-dropping in its mendacity — cherry-picking the Tax Policy Center reports and the tax benefit profiles, ignoring McCain’s health care plan tax benefits, etc.

I think Platts is going to coast to reelection in PA19, however.

I would hope you do not live here, in America. If there was ever a time that I would love to kick someone it would be you, and I would drop kick you to the ground!

Senator Obama is a Christian (unfortunately).

philnewkirk on October 7, 2008 at 2:53 PM

Um… no he ain’t. Christians don’t provide for chopping up live babies. It’s kinda mutually exclusive.

He needs to say something like:

“Now in the past I have said that the Economy wasn’t my strongest suit. But if you look at the mess the Dems in Congress have produced, you’ll see I still have them beat.” Then blast BO and the Dems for blocking his bill on Fannie and all the other waste.

Sure, those rural Pennsylvanians, those “bitter gun-and-religion” clingers, are going to vote for The One who insulted them in San Francisco.

Like chickens voting for the fox at their hen house! Sure. I don’t think rural Pennsylvanians should forget it.

newton on October 7, 2008 at 3:06 PM

You have GOT to be kidding me. Why in heck would you say that? Would you prefer a president who’s atheistic? I may not mind a president who has a different religion than me, but I for one would be rather hesitant to vote for an atheist unless the opposition was THAT bad (IE, Obama-like)… that’s just me though.

Grue in the Attic on October 7, 2008 at 3:01 PM

If he or she shared enough values that I have, of course. I’d prefer a leader who shared more concrete American values than simply worshiping God the same way I do. I go to church for my cues on faith; I don’t need a politician to give me mine. Hence why I liked McCain when he was honest about his secularism.

I know that most of what you post on here is tripe, so I know not to expect too much sense from you, but please don’t cheapen the term Christian by associating it with someone who openly denies the authority of the Bible like OBambi does. Have at least enough class to do that.

There we differ (among other things). To me, there is NO more concrete American value than religion. My political viewpoint is BASED on my religious values. I would LOVE to have a member of my church become president, because I would be nearly guaranteed to agree with all of their political policies – because they are rooted in the same system of morals and beliefs.

Someone extremely secular, on the other hand, is more likely to take positions I disagree with, or willing to compromise things I don’t think should be wavered on.

From the SF Chronicle….

Democratic registration has surged by 13 percent and Republican ranks have shrunk by 1 percent as a record 8.6 million people registered to vote in battleground Pennsylvania in the 2008 presidential election.

Last-minute registrations on Monday, the deadline, still have to be counted, but the total released by Pennsylvania’s State Department already far exceeds the previous record of 8.4 million set in 2004.

Democrats saw an increase of more than 500,000 new voters in the past year. Republicans saw their ranks shrink by about 28,000.

I think philnewkirk has his Obama blue shirt and Sam Browne belt all starched, polished, and ready to go when the New Order cometh. Seriously, I put philnewkirk and his ilk in the same category of that reporter that Ayaan Hirsi Ali chewed out–it’s easy to spit at freedom, if all you’ve enjoyed is freedom. Those who have experienced living in freedom, know just how precious a gift it is. Also, he, like so many living today in this country have never really known hard times–but he will under Obama–guaranteed.

I know from reflection that not an inconsequential number of people in PA changed their registration to D to affect the primary. Probably a half-dozen people in my neighborhood, for example. The Hillary signs were not replaced by Obama-Biden signs.

Sorry, I meant to say that those who have not enjoyed freedom, know just how precious a gift it is.

To add, freedom truly is worth fighting and dying for. Maybe I’m too old fashioned for the philnewkirks in this country, but I still get a little misty-eyed on hearing the national anthem and taps and I take the words in the Pledge of Allegiance in heart–I guess to philnewkirk I’m an anachronism. I’ll take that and be happy with it. Better an anachronism than someone who cannot or will not see a danger when its staring them in the face. There’s a word for that too–fool.

I suppose Obama declaring that Osama bin Laden had some good ideas would be a “gamechanger” but Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews would probably still declare McCain the loser.

I don’t believe any of them anymore. They (the opposition) is fudging the numbers to make Repubs wanna hide the razor blades.

The only one that counts is on November 5.

That’s my story and I am sticking with it.
