Debate Live-Blog and Chat!

The second John McCain/Barack Obama presidential debate will start at 9 PM ET, and Hot Air will be at the forefront of instant commentary! I’m using the Cover It Live system again tonight, but I’m combining it with the Ustream chat room from my show. That way the community can interact with each other as well as with me while I live-blog the debate. Jazz Shaw from The Moderate Voice will be moderating the chat, and don’t forget to register at Ustream to participate!

I believe that this embed will have the debate live, and you won’t need to go anywhere else to watch:

What keys should we keep in mind tonight?

  • McCain – He gets his preferred town-hall format, but that really doesn’t mean much, since Tom Brokaw has already selected the questions.  The format won’t allow for follow-up questions, either, which probably helps Obama more than McCain, who does a pretty good job counterpunching.   Instead, McCain needs to hammer Obama on Fannie Mae, taxes, and spending, and paint him as a backbencher who has no accomplishments other than getting himself elected.
  • Obama – He has an easier task tonight.  Obama knows McCain will get aggressive, just as he does in every debate.  He’ll do better to speak to general themes of discontent, ignore McCain, and stay positive while focusing on his own plans for government.  Every time McCain forces him to defend himself, he plays more and more on McCain’s turf.
  • Tom Brokaw – I’m more optimistic about Brokaw than some others, although I think I’d prefer Brit Hume or even Jim Lehrer.  Brokaw has enjoyed his senior-statesman status at NBC, and I suspect he also enjoys being the anti-Olbermann there as well.  Watch for bias in topics and question construction, but I predict that Brokaw will give a balanced performance tonight.

After the debate, I’ll talk with Hugh Hewitt to give my perspective, at around 10:30 pm CT.  I’ll also work on a final summary of the debate, probably for posting tonight.  Don’t miss a moment of it here at Hot Air!

Israel’s more afraid of Obama than 60% of our country…and he’s been living under our roof.

BuckeyeSam on October 7, 2008 at 10:54 PM

If the powers that be in Israel watched this or are paying attention at all to this crock of an election cycle, they are probably rethinking waiting to attack Iran until after the election. Obama won’t be a real friend to them if he’s in office.

tru2tx on October 7, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Check me if I’m wrong, but that didn’t much resemble a town hall debate, it was 2 people answering, for the most part, a bunch of idiot questions.

I fell asleep it was so boring.

What woke me up was the new McCain program to buy up all the mortgages from people who…what, don’t feel like paying them any more? JEEZ!

It doesn’t matter who wins. I’m done. Thanks for choking, Mac, and welcome to the USSA, the United Socialist States of America. In 10 years we’ll be kowtowing to our Chinese overlords.

mikeyboss on October 7, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Picture this… you are a “normal” person and not a bit of a political junkie. You watch ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN. You are reasonable and rational. You are part of the 60%+ that considers themselves conservative or reasonably conservative. In other words, your typical voter.

You walk in the booth and see:

President:

Republican – John Sidney McCain
Democrat – Barrack Hussein Obama

Okay, pull your lever.

McCain every time… the picture I desribed is my father-in-law who voted Clinton-Clinton-Gore-Kerry. He doesn’t “know” Obama and is very uncomfortable with him. One of the “polls” had those that think Obama is qualified to be President at 48% and those that didn’t think he was qualified at 47%. You cannot get elected with negatives that high.

Proud to say that I didn’t watch a minute of it. Caught a couple of The Office re-runs.
I’m sick to death of the importance placed upon these shows/debates/farces. They are a media creation designed to increase the influence of… the media.
Any so-called “undecided” voter who would be swayed by one of these shows should not be allowed to vote OR to drive!
We have an articulate inexperienced Marxist running against an experienced Democrat/Republican who is a worse communicator than George W. Bush.
Wake me up in four years.

No wonder Obama would not agree to 10 townhall debates. I thought McCain did well, however it was quite boring. McCain did come across as more presidential and more trustworthy.

Can Rick Warren be the moderator for the next debate?

Well, let’s be honest: It’s stupid voters that are giving us buying into these lame candidates; the leftist MSM can just sway them in any fashion that they want.

If there were enough responsible, intelligent voters out there we’d never have Barry as a dogcatcher, let alone a US Senator and prez candidate.

Again, Limbaugh has it right: Ignorance is the most expensive commodity we have in the US today.

Someone ask if McCain has a pair anymore. This is so typical of the kind of whiney ass cry baby comments we hear anymore. McCain has never had a lack of balls. In any sense of the word. He has risked his life and suffered much. It is one thing to criticize his debating skills, but to question his courage is just plain stupid. Boring, bad, garbage-esque and awful. A lot of this was because of the weak moderator. Anyone still undecided should not be allowed to vote. Two positives I did see. McCain made eye contact and maybe it was a good thing that Obama did not accept the 10 town hall requests.

If McCain says ‘if elected, I’ll ban all guns’ or ‘my presidency will mandate every American bleach their hair white to look like me’ or ‘I like turtles’ then I’d vote for Obama.

kara26 on October 7, 2008 at 11:17 PM

McCain did well on pointing out the Democrats’ role in the Fannie/Freddie debacle, but he missed a few chances to really hammer Obama. He did get a good dig at Obama about the energy bill, and the fact that Obama proposed to cut taxes but has always raised them in the past.

The FoxNews post-debate team says that the questions selected and the moderation didn’t really allow either candidate to get beyond their talking points, and there wasn’t a whole lot of time for counter-rebuttal after the second candidate made his statement. The first debate actually allowed more give-and-take, and McCain did much better in that format.

McCain missed a few chances, but a lot of Obama’s lies went unrebutted not so much because McCain failed to do so, but because he wasn’t given a chance. Probably a draw, but not what was needed.

Hopefully, he’ll have a better chance next time.

And no one challenged him on the assessment that all the talking heads are making that “This is a Democratic year.”

And why is that, exactly? Who made that determination? Is that like a GAP in politics? Seems to me, with a 14% and under approval rating on a Democratic Congress, there might be a LOT of wiggle room on whether this is a Democratic year.

Krauthammer has been saying some awfully weird stuff lately. I suppose by giving your opinion day in and day out, you have to start believing your own oratory.

It was a boring stupid debate. To an undecided, I think Obama won. He connected with the questioners better, and McCain just looked old and couldn’t stop saying “my friends”. Personally I think McCain did better, but thats only because i have a grasp of the entire Fannie/Freddie situation. To a majority of “undecideds”, which I refer to as “idiots”, Obama explained the economic crisis better. Also, undecideds probably have no clue as to what Fannie and Freddie are, not to mention what caused this economic crisis.

muyoso on October 7, 2008 at 11:18 PM

I just unsubscribed from the stupid McCain donor list.

The thing I don’t understand is that McCain has two sons in the military, yet he’s not going after the election as if it’s a matter of life or death. If I were in his shoes, I would pull out all the stops. Heck, I’d find the time and place to stay that I am after the presidency because I terrified for the well being of my sons under an Obama administration.

Crap, McCain, this isn’t just some quadrennial election. You’re interviewing to be the boss of your sons in dangerous endeavors. I can’t believe that’s all you have.

Disappoing, at best; pathetic, at worst.

My hubby is really afraid of spiders but he’s ready to go back there if Obama wins. Don’t let the spiders deter you. We got bitten by fire ants, but not spiders.

Personally, I haven’t given up yet (although I have started checking job postings in Texas…).

I agree with Spirit:

I don’t think McCain has to knock out Obama, but I’m in the minority I suppose. I think Palin will make Obama a dangerous pick in the next 3-4 weeks, and Mac just has to be the stable, smart guy you feel safe with.

Keep your collective chins up. This was just a weak-a$$ed “town hall” with dumb questions and pandering answers. I don’t think debates are that important, barring any major gaffes or killer one-liners.

Spirit of 1776 on October 7, 2008 at 11:20 PM

The idea of buying up the mortgages is one that has been suggested to stop the complete collapse of the real estate market. If home prices do not stabilize the losses will be felt by people who have never missed a payment, who have done everything right. The mortgages have a home behind them, they are not completely worthless.

If people are dumb enough to vote any Democrat in federal office after this Fannie/Freddie debacle, they’ll quickly favor whatever race towards complete socialism that Obama dictates; when it all falls apart they’ll eagerly lap up Barry’s blaming of Bush, e.g. “I didn’t realize how bad things were until I got into office and discovered this mess.”

Obama will paint himself as savior of the nation, to be sure, and his adoring fans will heartily concur.

I loved McCain! My nineteen year old son thought he owned Obama. The attacks, the sarcasm, the constant attacks on Obama’s record, the way he cruised by Obama like a shark and the way he stood, light on his feet, like a boxer…

I don’t know who you people are. McCain punched Obama so many times that by the end of the night I thought Obama’s nose was going to start bleeding.

This is the McCain I wanted to see, and I loved it. He won, big.

bonnie_ on October 7, 2008 at 10:44 PM

going to have to agree with Bonnie here. Obama’s incoherency was intorlerable and absolutely evident of his inability to make and articulate any well stated arguments.
McCain may not have attacked on everything I wanted him to hit Barry on but he did well despite the stacked questions as the piss-ant moderator who wouldn’t do his job.
So tick another one to McCain on my tally. As long as the jabs and uppercuts continue from McCain and Palin while they’re on the stump we will see a Republican victory in November.

basically the answer is no, he doesnt care what it takes as long as the guy elected has an (R) after his name he figures its a win, so what if he want the feds to buy a ton of bad paper or force re-negotiation of private contracts (un-Constitutional btw) or introduce tons of new oversight that will stifle economic growth. remember, regulations have a cost associated w/ them. as long as he can high five his buddies about a win principles be damned. and the party will slide left and he will wonder where all his money and freedoms went.

chasdal on October 7, 2008 at 11:24 PM

That all depends on how much you support a $300 billion plan to nationalize home mortgages. Or how much you believe in socialism.

bayam on October 7, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Socialism?

Do you know what the definition of socialism is?

It’s not socialism.

The government can come in and spend a lot of $$ buying defaulting mortgages at pennies on the dollar and stop this crisis from becoming worse. Who else is going to do it? Private corps. can’t do it quick enough or on a large enough scale right NOW.

It’s actually a relatively simple thing to do and you can actually make a lot of money doing it.

SaintOlaf on October 7, 2008 at 11:24 PM

what happened last Friday was a bigger step towards socialism that Obama could accomplish in 8 years in office.

Nah! He can (and WILL) do exponentially worse. Mark my words, my friend.

Oslime-a was very flustered after McCain nailed him and he begged Brokaw for time to respond. McCain nailed him again when he told Brokaw he was all for throwing the rules out the window. Oslime-a quietly sat down.

the feds taking over the mortgage industry isnt socialism?? are you daft? demint and pence had some very good free market ideas to help this “crisis” but oh no! bush and mccain let the dems roll them and go w/ the big gov’t solution. more from the govt is always bad, you need to memorize that and dont be scared to live life w/o a safety net.

chasdal on October 7, 2008 at 11:28 PM

McCain did score some points about Obama saying he would attack Pakistan, by saying that you don’t telegraph that you’ll invade another country, if you can work with the government to go after the terrorists.

Steve Z on October 7, 2008 at 11:28 PM

Sorta. I wasn’t really interested in Obama. What I was asking about McCain himself. You defend everything he does (and it’s not all good). I think I understand why – I think you are very sensitive to criticism of McCain because you think it will suppress votes – but I was looking for an ideological answer if you have boundaries, not really one that depended on Obama.

Spirit of 1776 on October 7, 2008 at 11:20 PM

I said, I wouldn’t support McCain if he suggested something that made him worse than Obama. I don’t defend everything he does. You are stuck to three months ago when you participated with floating rock, madison conservative and MB4 in the great ‘we hate f*king McCain’ crap from those months ago.

What ideological answer are you looking for? McCain was warning that Freddie and Fannie were in trouble while the democrats were taking donations and pushing for them to make more risky loans, and then threaten to sue them if they don’t comply. The democrats tried to say that it’s the fault of republicans because they wanted de-regulation, and thats BS. So if McCain would say he wants the government to force more companies to give bad loans to people who shouldn’t afford it, just like the democrats, then I couldn’t support him. But that would have to be one in a series of things that McCain would have to reverse himself on to get as bad if not worse than Obama. McCain would have to promise to meed unconditionally with akmadinnejad, and promise to destroy all US nuclear weapons, and then match every other Obama position, and then go even more liberal. Which isn’t easy to do, as Obama was the most liberal senator in 2007.

I don’t think this is unconstitutional, but I do think it is irresponsible for government to stand by and do nothing while the economy crashes and burns when they helped create the situation.

That was the worst debate I have ever watched! The format was just horrible. The questions were just horrible. Compared to the VP debate, this was a 3-day old tuna fish salad.

Romney would be eating this empty suit up. No wonder the media was so in the tank for McCain, and so afraid of Romney. If it weren’t for the Palin pick, McCain would have no chance at winning this most important election. Once again, I feel I’m voting against Obama rather than for McCain.

Keemo on October 7, 2008 at 11:31 PM

Mccain can fix the economy.

Obama cannot.

Like I said GAME OVER!!

SaintOlaf on October 7, 2008 at 11:31 PM

Asian markets tanking again.

This is the solace. Obama is going to take on a pile of crap.

And he fully deserves it.

drjohn on October 7, 2008 at 11:32 PM

and mccain also claimed it wasnt “amnesty” look, the govt has no business trying to buy anything to make a profit. especially when it makes the rules for those industries, huge conflict of interest! and yes, it is unconstitutional for the govt to interfere in a private contract i.e., foreced re-negotiation in this case.

chasdal on October 7, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Obama also said that it was government R and D that developed the computer in order for agencies to tlak with one another. I think he meant the internet.

No big deal but if McCain had said it, MSM, “He’s senile, he’s senile!”

Plus, Krauthammer gave the foriegn policy to Obama and Obama just really just agreed with the more detailed discussion of McCain. McCain was still sharp on FP, I just think he let Obama talk down the accomplishments and reasoning for Iraq too much. It’s as though we really have conceded purpose and results in Iraq.

hawkdriver on October 7, 2008 at 11:32 PM

The mortgages have a home behind them, they are not completely worthless.

Terrye on October 7, 2008 at 11:20 PM

It’s just the morons who defaulted on them because they lied on their applications or who didn’t make payment one that are completely worthless.
Why bail those bastards out? Kick them out of the homes and rent them. 5 days late with the rent, boot ‘em and find another renter..
The whole idea is to maintain value and cash flow..

TexasJew on October 7, 2008 at 11:32 PM

Exactly!

Mccain’s plan is brilliant!

He is the only candidate who will fix the economy.

SaintOlaf on October 7, 2008 at 11:34 PM

tru2tx & Buckeyesam,

When Israel goes, we are right behind. They are our only true blue (pardon the pun) allies. I love the Brits and the Aussies, but they have their own left loons to pacify.

We are looking at another four years of Carter, except he will have the full cooperation of both houses of congress. The only good thing Jimmah ever did was peave off Dem machinery enough that they wouldn’t let him have his way all the time. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are in lock-step, so we are royally ewdscrayed.

Laura in Maryland on October 7, 2008 at 11:34 PM

Let’s just put it this way: The power isn’t there now (unless it’s in the new bill), it would require an expansion of power for the SecTres.

And your point has weight, we are clearly in a time when the government is expected to handle everything, even national disasters like Katrina.

All teh pundits are saying McCain won of the economy. That was this weeks issue. And as much as we would have liked him to hammer it for the entire evening, McCain did get in the point about FM/FM and the attempts to regulate.

Wait and see. I think people wanted a knockout punch tonight and I did too. Doesn’t mean it’s time to panick.

We are still in good shape.

Gov’t health care:
For the longest time, the killer arguement to anything having to do with one’s own body has been “HEY ! Who’s body is it anyway?”

With goverment healthcare, that question will be answered.

Though not in the way you’d expect.
