Video: McCain unloads on Obama
posted at 4:39 pm on October 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
I’m looking around for a better clip, as this omits all the important Fannie/Freddie material, but it’ll have to do for now. For a contrarian view that maybe McCain should be spending more time on Ayers and, especially, on Wright and less on the economy, read Jay Cost or just eyeball the favorables graph down near the bottom of his post. There’s gold in them thar character attacks!

Blowback

I think it’s great to see a video of McCain going off on Obama while in the corner it shows the Dow down 400+ points and under 10,000.
IT’S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!

MSNBC didn’t include information about FM/FM that could be damaging to Obama in the clip? Say what!
I like the Open Book line though.

Star20 on October 6, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Other than the base, I don’t think anyone is going to listen to McCain and Palin talking down Obama. In fact, I don’t think there’s anything that can be said, shown, written, or sung that’s going to stop this runaway train until the whole county is in ruins.
Rod on October 6, 2008 at 4:48 PM
“Rather than answer his critics, Sen. Obama will try to distract you from noticing that he never answers serious and legitimate questions he’s been asked…for a guy who’s already authored to memoirs, he’s not exactly an open book!”
This is great stuff!

That’s true it seems.
Spirit of 1776 on October 6, 2008 at 4:48 PM
That’s the winning argument. I guess McCain didn’t like being called a liar, I’ll bet Obama is gonna regret that because it seems from the above clip, that is what “awoke” him from his slumber during the assault on his character.
And who do we have to thank for that? Sarah Palin, getting out there and telling it like it is. She is FANTASTIC.
JustTruth101 on October 6, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Heh heh.

Luntz was just on Fox showing a new poll that said THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WERE AGAINST THE BAILOUT. AND THAT IT WOULD CAUSE MORE BAILOUTS!
Well NO SHIT!
Gee! That’s not what the MSM and the Dems were saying!
They got the Republicans to believe this crap and to go along with it.
FiveWays on October 6, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Which is exactly why we should avoid Obama’s economic policies at least two of which (higher taxes and trade protectionism) mirror bad policy from the 30s that deepened the Great Depression.

BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!
pugwriter on October 6, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Man more of this. Watch his poll numbers rise. More of this every day until election day. Hit them so fast and so hard that it will be impossible for Obama or the MSM to cover. Do it!

I predict the uglier this contest gets the better for Mccain.
The idiots need to know exactly the guy they are voting for so when Jesse Jackson and Al sharpton have cabinet postions and Michelle Obama tells us all how to heal our souls and I see one of these Beta males can wonder ‘Hey’ what happened to the post-racial guy. I can proceed to ass kicking straight away

Chicago is terrible at baseball and politics.
Agreed on the baseball, but they are good at politics - very dirty and corrupt politics!
gmoonster on October 6, 2008 at 4:51 PM
People do get influenced by these kind of attacks. The only question is whether McCain has started too late.
johnt on October 6, 2008 at 4:52 PM
Obama has never had to go through a tough campaign for national office. His Senate bid was a cakewalk. It will be interesting to see how he reacts when the gloves are off.
Mark1971 on October 6, 2008 at 4:52 PM
Does anyone have any idea why the McCain campaign keeps using the word “authored” instead of saying Obama “wrote” his books? Palin used “authored” in her RNC speech as well. Weird.
crr6 on October 6, 2008 at 4:52 PM
You are correct. 100% true.
carbon_footprint on October 6, 2008 at 4:52 PM
I heard this on FOX. There is nothing like red meat! Obama has no accomplishments of note. More of this please!

That’s what he was talking about, STUPID!!
Now I get a better idea of who would vote for Obama…STUPIDS!!
right2bright on October 6, 2008 at 4:54 PM
On the less mainstream sites I’ve seen some arguments that Obama may have “had help” with his books…and that perhaps Mr Ayers was the “helper.” Wishful thinking but it could have something to do with that.

He’s just trying to keep up with the Saracuda.
m064404 on October 6, 2008 at 4:57 PM
McCain should be out there repeating this every day, in every interview. In the debates. In TV ads, etc.
Palin can be out there with the personal attacks on Ayers and Wright.
For a month, nothing else. Hammer it home.
AP is only picking up the “liar” bit right now. After the debate, praying to God McCain continues this argument, they’ll have to pick up more of it.
Last time McCain went after Obama on Fannie Mae, it was 1 speech and ineffective. Continue like this; pile on with other quotes from Democrats. And let it all fly. Shit will hit the fan.
Run against Congress. Run against Washington.
And Mac wins.
That’s what we’ve been saying for 3 weeks now, isn’t it?
lorien1973 on October 6, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Do it again, at the DEBATE! If 60-80 million people see this, watch the poll numbers rise! (or fall, for Obambi!)
Steve Z on October 6, 2008 at 4:58 PM
You know Bill Clinton was sitting at home watching this and cheering.
Mark1971 on October 6, 2008 at 4:58 PM
McCain needs to come out and say Steve Forbes will be his Economic Advisor in whitehouse. someone like that
jp on October 6, 2008 at 4:58 PM
I like the way this is shaping up- Palin going after the specifics of Obama’s questionable associations that go to the heart of Obama’s character & judgement, and McCain is going after the FM/FM debacle (ie, going after the Democratic congress, with it’s 15% approval ratings) that has led to this current disaster!
gmoonster on October 6, 2008 at 4:58 PM
I watched it. McCain was superb! He threw out everything that the MSM has been hiding. Who IS Barack Obama?
Connie on October 6, 2008 at 4:59 PM
I think the following quotes helped Johnny get it in gear.

Spirit of 1776 on October 6, 2008 at 5:00 PM
The only question is whether McCain has started too late.
With our current 1 week-memory culture, no, they’re starting right on time.
gmoonster on October 6, 2008 at 5:00 PM
I don’t think McCain started too late on all this. I think the McCain camp knows what they are doing with the timing. The majority of the electorate has ADD and it’s best to keep it as close to election day as possible while still making a point. Plus, some might get a little tired of the negativity from everyone for more than a month.
Just my opinion…unscientific, and all!
ConMom on October 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Actually, I can see the first black president now.
(Bites lower lip; points thumb) “John McCain is mah homey.”
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM
The timing is right, you do this stuff too soon and it loses it’s effect.
The beauty is he can run against the Republicans also. If Obama says something about Bush, McCain just says he will hold everyone accountable, will you hold Dodd and Frank accountable?
You can bet that Obama is holding some late night sesions on how to combat this.
McCain has studied this now for a couple of days, the attacker has the advantage.
Keating 5? Well, he just took down John Glen one of his supporters.
right2bright on October 6, 2008 at 5:02 PM
Affirmative Action candidates should not reach the level of Presidency, and if they do the rules don’t apply. The reason things are different with the big O is that he wants the rules to change for him. Maverick better start treating him like just another empty suit and drop the unequal treatment and handicapping himself.

lorien1973 on October 6, 2008 at 5:02 PM
Tell it, Brother John!
Gotta worry that the “touchy” line will be seen by Osama Obama’s MSM co-conspirators as somehow “racist,” though.
If Obama is forced to answer even one of the questions that have piled up, the Dems may want to set up a new nominating convention…stat!

ConservativePartyNow on October 6, 2008 at 5:05 PM
Well, I still hope to hear the whole speech. But based on this excerpt, it is a step in the right direction only. Falls way short of what needs to be said and done.
I hope that it is just a presage to a major ‘lowering of the boom’ on Obama during the debate.
LegendHasIt on October 6, 2008 at 5:05 PM
Now Connie, who are you to question The Deciders?

His mother-in-law died so he is not campaigning at the moment.
Mark1971 on October 6, 2008 at 5:06 PM
Many people were predicting McCain would go nuclear after the bail-out vote was complete. That and four weeks left until the election. They were waiting for the right time. Some say it is too late, but in a campaign that started 20 months ago, one month – the last month seems about right to unleash the attack.
carbon_footprint on October 6, 2008 at 5:06 PM

Bishop on October 6, 2008 at 5:06 PM
TOO bad Mccain couldnt have done this before the meltdown and current financial crisis…For some reason this attack doesnt seem credible. I mean i’ve read about all this but if John does this in a debate then it will seem like he is reaching for something and downplayed.
John really needs to come out with a solid plan during the debate. Throw out all he has mentioned and say that the government might not spend any money that he will have to cut jobs in the federal gov…he should also ask congress to lay off some of their staffers to reduce some costs…
After the Republican Convention I felt that it was over. Now it may truly be over and its not going in the direction of who I want to win!

He is off until Wednesday for the funeral, etc.
carbon_footprint on October 6, 2008 at 5:07 PM
With all due respect, what helped him get it in gear was realizing he has nothing left to lose. So, he seems to have stopped playing simply not to lose.
It’s human nature. All sports fans can tell the difference between athletes and teams playing to win and those simply playing not to lose. He’s been playing not to lose. It’s the 4th quarter. He’s down 7 points and now he want to win.
TheBigOldDog on October 6, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Yeah that’s kinda what I figured. Plus saying he “wrote” the books makes him seem much more intelligent then if he “authored” them.

Keep it up John, if for nothing else, to inform the citizenry what a shapeless enigma they will be electing.

He needs to talk about the things he has done with Dems, like the judge deal and McCain-Feingold. I know those aren’t popular with conservatives, but it shows his accomplishments.
Mark1971 on October 6, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Who is that guy in the video?!
Did McCain go to teleprompter school over the weekend? He sounded and looked pretty darn good there, very comfortable at the podium. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come.
At the very least, I’d like to see the guy go down swinging.

funky chicken on October 6, 2008 at 5:09 PM
I think that while they would work in a “normal” election year, attacks on Obama’s circle of fiends won’t stick; people regard him as the devil-they-know, because he’s at least got a “Plan.” Granted, it calls for $800B in taxes/new spending… but with Big Government writing a $700B check for The Bailout, people are shocked by Obama’s number.
McCain & Co. need to see our economic melt-down — which is quickly going global — and use it as the basis for New Deal 2.0 presented as another “Contract with America.” It should include:
- A minimum 25% reduction in Government employee headcount by the end of his first term.
- Elimination of the Dept. of Education, pushing education planning to the state level
- Introduction of a simplified tax structure, that reduces the number of IRS employees by 50% before the end of his first term
- A commitment to begin exploration of all high-probability oil fields within 24 months, and construction of 20 nuclear power plans before the end of his first term
- The sale of non-strategic, non-scenic government land to private investors

McCain needs to go after Obama while sending strong signals that he will bring in smart, capable people to assist with the economy.
Obama has demonstrable associations with leftist organizations, unsavory people and radical causes. McCain needs to be more specific and detailed than just Ayers and Wright. Establish Obama’s pattern and practice.
Refocus the minds of voters on what a non surge, Iraqi defeat would look like. Counter factual arguments can be hard to make so get an expert (prefer military type) to make the case in a very public way and get them in front of cameras. The issue is not should we be there but how we go forward and at a tipping point moment, Obama wanted to abandon ship.
Remind voters about Obama’s foreign policy statement gaffes. Georgia’s need for restraint after being invaded but more importantly saying Iran is a small country and poses no threat before saying it is a grave and growing threat. Iran is a terrorist nation and should underscore the fact that Israel knows Iran is a threat. Tell that to the people who have lost children due to Iranian backed terrorists. Tell that to the parents of soldiers killed in Iraq due to Iranian supplied IEDs.
Lastly, it would be helpful if McCain could tap someone who could begin in to flesh out a thoughtful economic strategy. McCain is getting killed here and he is not the best spokesperson. Romney obviously understands business and economics and would be a thoughtful spokesperson to begin to lay out an agenda. It is unlikely Mitt would want the job but someone needs to step out front who could begin to get specific.
