I’m looking around for a better clip, as this omits all the important Fannie/Freddie material, but it’ll have to do for now. For a contrarian view that maybe McCain should be spending more time on Ayers and, especially, on Wright and less on the economy, read Jay Cost or just eyeball the favorables graph down near the bottom of his post. There’s gold in them thar character attacks!

If Obama’s spokes-babe is ANY indication of the official Obama response, then-
THIS IS A MAJOR WIN FOR MCMAVERICK!
SHE WAS RATTLED!

Yep, and I look forward to seeing that graph again in a few more days - maybe after the debate.
Not weird at all. What IS weird is turning your DISH SAT powered TV off at night on one channel, and waking up in the morning to find it automatically tuned into the Obama channel. Scroll here for the creepy details.

McCain has grown a pair (or has borrowed a pair from Palin). Whatever the case, they are all in now; there’s no turning back. And the strategy, as it is with energy, should be “all of the above.”
I have to go find my most recent RNC solicitation. I’ll contribute more for this kind of effort.
Did someone in McCain Headuarters rent Animal House this weekend and watch the scene in which Brother Bluto (Belushi) gives the rousing speech that included the line, “Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”
And should we expect McCain to paint all the Straight Talk Express buses black and title them Eat Me?
Fire up.

“Authored” refers to published works. The connotation of the word authored is actually more respectful to Obama and one that a long time legislator might use (see below).
Usage Note: The verb author, which had been out of use for a long period, has been rejuvenated in recent years with the sense “to assume responsibility for the content of a published text.” As such it is not quite synonymous with the verb write; one can write, but not author, a love letter or an unpublished manuscript, and the writer who ghostwrites a book for a celebrity cannot be said to have “authored” the creation. The sentence He has authored a dozen books on the subject was unacceptable to 74 percent of the Usage Panel, probably because it implies that having a book published is worthy of special lexical distinction, a notion that sits poorly with conventional literary sensibilities and seems to smack of press agentry. The sentence The Senator authored a bill limiting uses of desert lands in California was similarly rejected by 64 percent of the Panel, though here the usage is common journalistic practice and is perhaps justified by the observation that we do not expect that legislators will actually write the bills to which they attach their names.·The use of author as a verb in computer-related contexts is well established and unexceptionable.

Didn’t mean to be a dick about it, but lets face it, individual optimism could roller-coaster day to day with the avalanche of information flowing in; today Mac is up, tomorrow he’s down, blah blah blah.
Don’t throw-in the towel now with still about a month left before the election, anything can happen and usually does. It’s October, shit is SUPPOSED to hit the fan and send everything we thought we knew flying into space.

He isn’t doing as well as I had hoped, but isn’t trailing by too far. Udall has a huge ad budget… tons of out of state money, DNC money and Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Taos money. Steve isn’t getting much help from the RNC, and pretty much only gets a few bucks from us po’ folks out in the sticks.
But Steve HAS forced Udall to flip-flop COMPLETELY on Energy policy and a few other things.
In an honest election, I’d say it is a tossup, but with ACORN activities, Steve is at a great disadvantage. I don’t know if you saw my post the other day, but an Obama campaign worker with a knocked at my door a couple of days ago looking for a newly registered Democrat voter at the address of the vacant lot next door.
On top of that, the (Democrat, of course) Secretary of State has printed up three times as many paper ballots as there are registered voters in the state… And when Udall’s son-in-law, who she appointed to the head of the state Elections Bureau, quit because of public pressure on his obvious conflict of interest, she replaced him with someone else who has a long personal, business and political history with Tom Udall.
The normally high NM Democrat vote fraud is going to be several orders of magnitude higher this time.
The future is dim, even if McCain kicks butt in the next 29 days.

McCain needs to reply to the Keating Five attacks with:
“I apologized for any invovlement, and was later exonerated by a Democrat Congress. WHEN…..Senator Obama….can we expect YOU and your Democrat cohorts to come clean with the American people about YOUR invovlement with the WORST FINANCIAL CRISIS IN AMERICAN HISTORY?”
FiveWays on October 6, 2008 at 5:41 PM
There are some internet roumors that Obama did not write his memoirs. There seems to be two distinct writing styles the books…. so, he is listed as author, but may very well have had someone else write at least part of them..
My guess is the McCain camp knows something about this from opposition research…
But heck, I’m still waiting on the Berg vs. Obama lawsuit meself… and for someone to get the record of which passport he used to go to Pakistan in 81 (was illegal to use a US passport then…).
Romeo13 on October 6, 2008 at 5:44 PM
Nyah - tears and voice-cracking are normal reactions for someone whose messiah has been spat upon.
Obama and the ‘nauts are going to have to reach very far to turn the narrative of the last month of the campaign into anything other than McCain-Palin on-the-attack. He’s set up trying to defend a lead at a time when Americans will want leaders who are aggressive truth-tellers unperturbed by counterfire.
CK MacLeod on October 6, 2008 at 5:46 PM
You know damn well I have never supported obama… Or even said anything nice about him.

FiveWays on October 6, 2008 at 5:51 PM
What will be interesting is whether Obama can weather this attack during the debate.
I don’t think he has been under this kind of fire, and it may be McCain’s idea to begin to “break” him, get him rattled, throw him off his standard lines.
Obama may not know how to act under this pressure, which is another reason to wait until these final weeks to fully attack.
If Obama buckles under the attack during the debate, shows nervousness, unease, it will play into he does not have the experience. If he attack back, I would think with his lack of experience he would either over attack, or fumble in the attack. You don’t learn these things overnight.
Tomorrow night will be interesting…not so much as how well McCain can do, but how poorly Obama will do.
right2bright on October 6, 2008 at 5:51 PM
He better come out like Tom Brady looking down field 50+ yards for Randy Moss and throwing deep every single chance he gets. If he comes out looking to just run the ball he’s dead.

FiveWays on October 6, 2008 at 5:55 PM
And the format is townhall, which is McCain’s forte. But not Obama’s.
Disturb the Universe on October 6, 2008 at 5:56 PM
I know most of us seem to want to McCain to go nuclear during the debate, but he has to time it just right in a Townhall-type setting, and the opportunity just may not come up. You’ve got to let the people run the show, and they mostly require pap, not raw meat. You really don’t want to get booed for being a meanie before an audience of 80 million.
On the other hand, it’s not impossible to imagine just the right approach solving the election problem as the assembled independents rise up out of the chairs and tear Obama limb from limb. Now THAT would be great TV. Can’t give the odds of that as being better than 1 out of 3!
The last debate may be the one where the combat shotgun is emptied, and the BFG is deployed.
CK MacLeod on October 6, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Finally… McCain adopts the Obama is “Too Dishonest to Lead” theme. Forcing Obama’s real life story out in the open will win it for McCain.
T J Green on October 6, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I agree that Obama can get rattled. Palin was definitely in his head, “We aren’t going to talk about her at all! But since you brought her up…” and he is terrible off the cuff. Member the defeated Obama coming out after the BOR interview. This can win if Mac keeps the pressure on.
Kos isn’t smart enuf to counter fact, and thus KO and MSM got nothin’.

OK, if we are going to go with a boxing analogy he better come out like Manny Pacquiao throwing nothing but power shots looking for each blow to deliver the knock out punch.

Catch the full clip on C-Span. It opens with 2minutes of the usual stumper, closes with what Mac will do for you but in between is 20 minutes of uninterrupted, gleeful Obama-bashing.
i b squidly on October 6, 2008 at 5:59 PM
That may very well be, but I think McCain and Palin using the term “authored” has more to do with a stylistic point (McCain is probably used to the term authored from his work in the Senate) than from an attempt to zing Obama.
Y-not on October 6, 2008 at 5:59 PM

Romeo13 on October 6, 2008 at 5:59 PM
McCain can fairly point out that Obama received more FM/FM money than anyone but Dodd, and he received the most on an annual basis, AND Obama did nothing to reign in FM/FM in 2006 when McCain called for reform.
Totally true, totally fair, and totally devastating.
gmoonster on October 6, 2008 at 5:59 PM
whether thru malice or ignorance he still does damage. and he shows no willingness to listen to either the electorate or his advisors. hell, he sometimes goes off message just hours after a meeting. he wil not continue this line of attack. before the week is out he will contradict himself and those who are pressing this attack.

Great, but it should have been done before McCain suspended his campaign or the weekend after.
Now the left will spin it as desperate sour grapes.
But McCain has a new chance in the debates.
—–
In the debate Obama needs to be punched with this attack several times and made to respond, such as:
McCain: “I did the following to stop FM & FM from turning into the disaster it did…… - What did you do Sen. Obama? Why didn’t you help me when I tried to rein them in?”
How can Obama answer something like that without looking weak?
albill on October 6, 2008 at 6:03 PM
“And my friends, where was Senator Obama in 2006 when I tried to reign in FM/FM? I’ll tell you: He was taking their money. In fact he took more money faster than any other member of Congress.”
TheBigOldDog on October 6, 2008 at 6:03 PM
May very well be… but there is a tactic I used to use in the military to get my point across…
Be VERY specific (accurate but not normal usage) in your wording, until someone (in this case the Press) asks you why you keep using that wording, then explain.
Like when talking about a low level Officer, using the term DEMANDS respect… or using COMMANDS instead of Leads… aeventualy, if you keep using the more correct term, someone asks… then you can attack without seeming to be initiating the attack…
Romeo13 on October 6, 2008 at 6:03 PM

That’s so important. Who indeed is Obama? What’s that thing inside him that drives him, his character, his values, his dreams, what is tender and precious within him. His election is so much of a trainwreck to me. I supported McCain in 2000 because he’s a fiscal hawk. McCain-Palin is a great “reform” ticket.
And when Palin says “[Obama] isn’t a man who sees America like we see America”, don’t equate that with “doesn’t look like the presidents on the dollar bill” and “did I mention he’s black”. Apples and oranges.

BO said that the US should cut and run from Iraq even if it means Iraqi genocide.
When BO chaired the board administering the Annenberg grant, $100 million was wasted on projects that were found to produce zero benefit to the schools that were supported
I don’t understand why these issues aren’t brought up.
obladioblada on October 6, 2008 at 7:00 PM
For many democrats, that’s what they wanted. Because this would help them politically. And to make sure that Bush’s legacy in Iraq would be defeat. No thinking person would want this to happen. And of course democrats have supported going in to Darfur, to prevent a genocide. And to put troops into harm’s way and get killed. Wanting Iraqis to die from our pullout to “leave the Iraqi people to their destiny” while wanting peacekeeping in other areas is completely hyprocritical.
As I said. The people who wanted us out of Iraq were counting on more pain and suffering to occur.

For what it’s worth, they should use everything. Fannie/Freidde, Ayers, Wright everything. Leave nothing out. If it’s too cimplcaited divide the work between the team and let them handle it separately. I think that’s what they are doing. Palin is handling Ayers while Mccain is handling Fannie. That’s a good one. Leave nothing.

Another point McCain should mention is that Obama is trying to ride this county’s economic crisis right into the white house. Obama has done NOTHING in his entire US senate career to prevent this crisis from happening. As a matter of fact, he has opposed all attempts to rein in FM & FM. But you know who has been trying to rein them in since 2003? That’s right, John McCain. Who is Barack Obama? Who does he associate with? What legislation has he supported?
