Survey USA: Obama leads by double digits in New Hampshire and … Virginia

posted at 3:07 pm on October 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Even more gruesome than that Rasmussen national poll this morning putting The One at a cool 52 percent. The samples lean a bit towards the Dems in both states — eight-point and nine-point gaps, respectively — but given the size of the leads, it doesn’t much matter. From the Virginia poll:

There is movement among men, where immediately after the GOP convention, McCain led by 10, and where today Obama leads by 11.
There is movement among whites, where McCain’s once 22-point lead is today reduced to single digits.
There is movement among the well-to-do, where today for the first time Obama leads.
There is movement among pro-choice voters, where Obama’s lead has doubled since August.

New Hampshire went blue in ‘04 so McCain doesn’t absolutely have to have it, but it was one of the states he thought he had a shot at flipping. Same with Michigan, which he’s now abandoned. Virginia, though, went red four years ago, as it has in every election since 1964. Remember our back of the envelope math on electoral votes last week? If The One can hold on to Kerry’s states and his current leads in Nevada and Iowa, Virginia would put him over the top. And Survey USA’s not the only new poll showing him with a double-digit lead there. In fact, Karl Rove’s electoral map based on public polls as of Friday already puts Obama over the top with 273 EVs, and that’s with Virginia and Nevada bpth in the toss-up column. Not all the blues are lost causes — Colorado, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are all within six — but look how many yellows are teetering.

What’s the way out? An Ayers/Wright offensive simply isn’t going to hack it; even I can’t be bothered with it today between covering my face and peeking through my fingers at the sinking Dow. A sustained attack on the left over Fannie/Freddie will help, but I don’t know how you push that message through to low-information voters with the time left. It seems unlikely in the extreme that people who don’t follow this from day to day are to going react to a meltdown on Wall Street by electing the guy from the party commonly derided as a pawn of big business. On the contrary, the worse things get, the better The One’s vacuous rhetoric sounds. After all, what surer tonic could there be for a looming depression than Hopenchange? Pricetag: $5 trillion. Horrifying exit quotation from an unnamed McCain advisor suggesting they’re ready to give up: “If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we’re going to lose.” Note to Team Maverick — you have no choice.

Update: Almost forgot. If you think things can’t get worse, bear in mind that the preliminary report in the Troopergate probe is due out Friday.

No, she is not dumb. My God, what state are you the Governor of? What have you ever accomplished in your life that you can look at a woman like Sarah Palin who has accomplished a lot in the last 16 years and call her dumb?

You are just a petty little name caller. Bitter and pissy.

Ok Roger – you have your opinion – fair enough – I have mine.

McCain fell into this nomination as a result of the GOP committing self inflicted suicide in the primary.

Sometimes you have to bottom out your boat to learn your way through the channel.

McCain is today – what he was in 2000 – unstable and unelectable.

That said – I will vote for him. Sorry to say.

Ev’ry soul is a mystery
Faces change. What you knew grows strange

The real self often erases

Can I trust you? Should you trust me too?
We’re all alone in this hell
And we all have secrets to sell
And there comes a day when we sell our souls away!

Someone answer me. How does Ras/Zog/etc. gather this info? WHO are they calling/polling?

Mommypundit on October 6, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Excellent question, and herein lies the problem.

To produce a valid and reliable poll outcome the pollster must have a firm understanding of the population parameter he is sampling. He must then determine appropriate sample sizes, significance levels and the appropriate interrogatories. There are also many other variables that must be considered and dealt with before a poll is taken and conclusions are reached, The point is that if he doesn’t apply sound scientific methods, or if he improperly samples the population, or, if he simply doesn’t understand the population he is sampling, then the result will be nothing but mathematical garbage. Polls can be excellent predictive devices if properly constructed, conducted and evaluated. They can also be totally worthless if the previous criteria are not met. In this day of “entertainment polls” I believe that many if not all media polls fall into the latter category. If you are sincerely interested in the results of a poll then you should ask the pollster to provide all of his sampling statistics, raw data and demographics . . . if he balks, throw his poll in the trash.

Anyone for Toast?
Politics | Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 9:55:31 am PST

In Slate Magazine, William Saletan says the polls are so stacked against John McCain, there’s no possibility he can win. The race is over.

Oh, wait. That was eight years ago, and he was talking about George W. Bush.

Why Bush Is Toast.

Since Labor Day, the media have released about 20 polls on the presidential race. Three show a dead heat, one shows George W. Bush leading by a single percentage point, and the rest show Al Gore leading by one to 10 points. In the latest polls, Gore leads by an average of five points. It’s fashionable at this stage to caution that “anything can happen,” that Bush is “retooling,” and that the numbers can turn in Bush’s favor just as easily as they turned against him. But they can’t. The numbers are moving toward Gore because fundamental dynamics tilt the election in his favor. The only question has been how far those dynamics would carry him. Now that he has passed Bush, the race is over.

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31487_Anyone_for_Toast

The media is 100%, all chips in the pot, full in for Obama this election. It’s way more than they were in for Gore or Kerry. They will do everything in their power to push him into office.

YOU MUST be ready for their attempt to demoralize you, and you MUST resist. And don’t go around spreading depression if you fail to resist on your own.

carbon_footprint on October 6, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Absolutley don’t let the polls discourage you from voting, it’s the final count that matters, not what the current polls are showing.

In fact one of the tactics of the Obama campaign is to continue to tout the polls in their favor to discourage voters from voting, don’t let them get away with it, get out there and vote!

Besides, in the primaries the “polls” conducted had been wrong every time, they ended up the opposite of what the pre-caucus polls and exit polls had indicated, so don’t lose hope, instead get out the vote!

How many of you have been to a McCain rally, a McCain\Palin rally or a Palin rally? The reason I ask is that I went to the Palin rally and I spoke to a lot of people there who I never would have thought would be supporting a Republican…Sarah Palin has been a huge draw and a lot of the people love her but these types of people weren’t the only ones there. A lot of the people I met hate just hate Obama, his inexperience, his lack of qualification, his arrogance, his anti military feelings, his associations, a lot of jewish peope there did not trust him…

Sarah Palin is smart and savvy but she also has something Obama thought only he had and that is an adoring base…she is more articulate, more American, more astute. more charming, more real, more experienced, more accomplished and honest…McCain did good in picking her…

I will keep saying this…don’t get depressed or demoralized and quit or the MSM, Soros, Ayers, pollsters, and who ever else is behind this travesty that is the Obama campaign will win! I’m home today preparing to start making calls, posting flyers and emailing info to people…

That’s not true…we will see Olbermann regularly on a news channel for 4 – 8 years as well. You know, I am not sure, who is worse…Olbermann or Lucifer Huckabee.

Roger Waters on October 6, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Palin isn’t dumb. Not even most of her lefty haters think she is dumb. But it was pretty clear that she wasn’t prepared for the MSM to quiz her on the “Bush doctrine”(however you define it) or stupid gotcha questions.

Speedwagon82 on October 6, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Allah,

get your panties untwisted. doom is not a good color on you. we have 30 days to change. you want to change the race? start talking about personal responsibility not government bailouts. During the vP debate this was the highest rated point Gov Palin made. Personal responsibility. individual choices not federal gov. Obama will lose if it is a choice of limited gov or full socialism. People want the federal government to do less, take less taxes, have less rules and do the damn job that they should be doing instead of giving poor people loans.

In 2000 and 2004 at this exact time of the election cycle, Bush was down by double digits in many polls, and behind in every single poll, every one.

right2bright on October 6, 2008 at 3:38 PM

No, he wasn’t.

In mid-October 2004, Reuters/Zogby released a poll that showed Bush leading by 4. See for yourself.

Folks, this isn’t 2004; it’s 1964.

“OK, you don’t like Palin. Sort of an intimidation thing for you .. OK, I got it, and your buddy Botox Biden is a real genius, saying (for example) that France and the US kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon – three lies in one sentence, a new world’s record – the stupidest foreign policy statement I have heard since that cretin Andy Young packed up his belongings in a brown paper bag after he left the UN in 1979.

TexasJew on October 6, 2008 at 4:05 PM”

Dude, those werent even the dumbest things he said…nor the biggest lies. If you think I am voting for Biden, then, whatever. We have a choice between two tickets who think like democrats (except for the pro-life issue). I will vote for the least of the two evils (McCain/Palin). But, they have no chance and we deserve to lose.

Roger Waters on October 6, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Note to McCain: if you want to win a state like Virginia, it is best not to refer to the state’s breadwinning region as communist.

philnewkirk on October 6, 2008 at 3:57 PM

He should just refer to the whole state as a Communistwealth. I know I do.

I was actually reading from the FBI files on Frank Marshall Davis – Obama’s mentor. His communist activity in America predates WWII. All of it centered in Chicago. He was actually sent to Hawaii because it was a hotbed of communist activity and because it had military significance.

This is never going to end. But the more we can inform people of its reality and its ability to deliberately create a financial 9-11, the harder it will be for them to find willing suckers to buy their crap.

justincase on October 6, 2008 at 4:11 PM

Yeah, I was pissed that Cramer did that. He could give his advice without being so dramatic and spooking the market. And I like Cramer but he sometimes goes overboard.

He’s ahead 15% in the polls!
SaintOlaf on October 6, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Ding ding ding! They had that number going into the voting booth and something near it from polling those who just voted, yet we know the result.

A lot of bellyaching about the polls when there are internal numbers which are a lot more precise than what we get.

I live in VA and simply can’t believe these polls. Sure there are some “pockets” of Obama support … but I see McCain/Palin signs in even known blue terrority, something totally unexpected.

darwin on October 6, 2008 at 3:44 PM

I’ll piggyback on this. I live in Northern VA, in a HEAVILY liberal / Democrat area – specifically, I have the misfortune of living in the district that keeps re-electing that old anti-semitic fool Jim Moran.

And I’m seeing a lot of McCain signs. Obama signs are far more prevalent, of course, but I’m seeing more McCain signs, for example, then I saw Bush signs in 2004.

Anecdotal evidence, of course, and I’m not exactly predicting a McCain win in VA….I have my fears.

But I will commit to this: I do NOT believe that it’s that big of a lead for Obama here. Obama may win the state, but these numbers, IMO, are not an accurate representation of how things really are in the state. I think it’s far closer than that.

good question, the side that would win and has the ‘moral authority’ card to play.

I just think all this stuff with Obama, his fondness in himself(the cult of obama), Presidential Seal, Greek/Roman stuff and of course the fact he’s a marxist with near absolute control over the media is creepy and erie. All the “USA = Rome” comparison gain some traction. In the end our system of Govt., balance of powers, should be enough to stop that from occurring, but worried abotu what the Media is doing right now.

I don’t think it’s coincidence at all. Nor are the responses from Putin, Chavez, Ahmadinejad, and Al Qaeda – crowing about how this crisis shows that the free market doesn’t work, that America’s Constitution needs to be ditched.

I just saw in passing that Germany is thinking about how to shield itself from the dangers of the US market. This thing is calling into question the ability of the free market to be stable – even though it was the VIOLATION of the free market through forced subprime lending that got us here.

I think the vast majority of Americans love America. They don’t know we are being sytematcally targeted and attacked. If we let them know, they will be majorly ticked off.

A lady at church yesterday was undecided. I explained to her what Obama’s “community organizing” actually was and she visibly recoiled. It was like Obama had almost raped her by getting her to think he wasn’t a mobster.

It’s like Bezmenov said – the people who believe in an ideal will be the worst enemies when they realize they’ve been had. If we can let America know they’re being had, Obama won’t stand a chance.

If I can get ink in my printer, I intend to send the transcript of the Bezmenov interview to every college professor, newspaper, and TV station I can.

If somebody is artistic it would be great to come up with a little tract that could be put on people’s parked cars or something. We have to find a way to inform the people who only watch the MSM.

With the USA trending pansy, how we come out of this does not look good. Americans can’t even stand 4k in deaths over a 5 yr period in Iraq. The freaked out when Pat Robertson suggested Chavez should be whacked…which he was right. This country practically has a suicide wish

Don’t be too sure. With a Democratic congress and a veto proof senate, a Democratic president, and the appointment of only one supreme court justice, there is no balance of power . . . in concept, yes but in fact, no. If you think it’s spooky now, wait until the this comes to pass
